I came across these children who, following the lead of the little girl, all decided to sleep in the sun on the driveway. Oscar pointed out later that this looks like the effects of war, or casual gun use. Odd that I failed to notice that.

Field Diary 7

Field Diary 7

Field Diary is how I named a collection of photos taken in a certain field, mainly from 1981 to 1994 and then once in a while. I was shooting from 3 permanent viewpoints.

This collection depicts the changes the field was going through the seasons and the various crops grown in it.

Not all survived the time. The first few were slides made into prints that are not real good, and now were scanned again.

Never the less, the changes as they evolve matters, forgive me if not all are in good condition.

I take pride for my involvement in cultivating sowing and so on, in creating the changes in the field. Taking the photos came next : - )

Who and where?

Who and where?

I found this as a book-mark in a charity bookshop, and would certainly appreciate knowing where and when it hails from. Unlikely, but it remains a nostalgia-tinged image.

It would appear to have been a gelatin-coated post-card. On the back is simple English (from the UK or Canada or Australia or New Zealand) for 'Correspondence' and 'Address'.

What does it show? The staff from a school? I'm guessing it's the 1950s, judging by clothes and hairstyles. Any further clues?

Esquinta Caliente in Havana, Cuba

Esquinta Caliente in Havana, Cuba

To the uninitiated, the sight of 30 or more Cuban men remonstrating loudly in a Havana park probably appears more like a malevolent mob than a spontaneous gathering of sports enthusiasts. But ask any of the aggrieved fist-shakers who frequent the boisterous Esquina Caliente (literally 'hot corner') in Parque Central what they're arguing about and you'll get back a rather innocuous reply: baseball.

While the Canadians debate hockey and the Brits bore each other with cricket statistics, the Cubans seek solace in baseball, a sport that inspires more saber-rattling than a May Day rally.

Havana's key baseball rivalry revolves around Los Industriales (the silverware-hogging Manchester United) and Los Metropolitanos (the less successful Manchester City), though the biggest debates are reserved for when the boys from Santiago roll into town and Havana's two sets of opposing supporters form a formidable - if temporary - alliance.

The 'hot corner' is the place to go if you want to discuss form, home runs or the chances of Livan Hernandez making a Cuban comeback. It runs from dawn till dusk 365 days a year and, in contrast to cricket, rain never stops play (instead the group reconvenes under the porch of the adjacent Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes).

From the Lonely Planet Cuba guide book.

Day 285 - October 12, 2007

Day 285 - October 12, 2007

This is The Sarcasm Twins at Oktoberfest on Friday night at the Kitchener Auditorium, where the Kitchener Rangers play. It was definitely a cool experience and I was really glad I went, albeit something I probably won't kill myself to go to again. Imagine a club kinda setting (although frankly I really wouldn't know), if that's possible inside a huge gymnasium-like room, and everyone getting down like muthas. But instead of shitty music, there is a live band of old dudes dressed in German Mr. Oktoberfest garb, playing amazing German folk tunes, as well as some polksa. It was epic. Then around the perimeter was beer stands and schnitzel stands. The schnitzel was damn good. The funny thing was they only sold Molson and Coors Light and swill like that. I had heard all about how there were hundreds of beers from all over the world, but this was more of a, "Let's get wasted"-type affair, so there was none of that.

The highlight of my night was probably chilling with this awesome guy who came with us, this drunken Calgary Flames fan. We were talking about how much we hate each other's hockey team, although we came to respect each other in the end. He reminded me of Dolnik at one point. When we went outside afterwards and there were many buses all around for all the slaughtered people to ride home in, there was this guy saying, "Buses on the right." Without hesitation, in true Dolnik fashion, the Calgary Flames fan was like, "You're a bus!" It was great.
