Lego Hawker typhoon

Lego Hawker typhoon

Before the first Hurricanes rolled off from Hawker factories, Sydney Camm was already designing its replacement, built to the Air Ministry's specifications of a large fighter based on either the Sabre or the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine. The Vulture powered fighter, the Tornado, held little promise as its engine was far too unreliable in service. The Napier Sabre powered prototype developed into the Typhoon.
Early Typhoons had a severe problem with the tail section, which tended to break off in a dive due to a weak transport joint, among other things. The fatal fault was only discovered when one pilot managed to bail out and report it. In response to this, the other remaining Typhoons were fitted with fishplates around the weak point.
With that, the Typhoon went on to become a great low level fighter, and an outstanding fighter-bomber and tank-buster. It even spawned several other successful piston engined fighters such as the Tempest and the Fury.

Scaled Composites WhiteKnightTwo.

Scaled Composites WhiteKnightTwo.

The Scaled Composites Model 348 WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) is a jet-powered carrier aircraft which will be used to launch the SpaceShipTwo spacecraft. It is being developed by Scaled Composites as the first stage of Tier 1b, a two-stage to suborbital-space manned launch system. WK2 is based on the successful mothership to SpaceShipOne, White Knight, which itself is based on Proteus.

Virgin Galactic has ordered two WK2s. Together WK2 and SS2 form the basis for Virgin Galactic's fleet of suborbital spaceplanes.

The first WK2 is named VMS Eve after Richard Branson's mother; it was officially unveiled on July 28, 2008, and flew for the first time on December 21, 2008. The second is expected to be named VMS Spirit of Steve Fossett after Branson's close friend Steve Fossett.

WhiteKnightTwo is roughly three times larger than White Knight, in order to perform a captive carry with the larger SpaceShipTwo spacecraft. The WK2 is similar in wingspan to a B-29 Superfortress. Despite that comparison, White Knight Two is a thoroughly modern aircraft - even the flight control cables are constructed of carbon fiber, using a new patented design.

WK2 will provide preview flights offering several seconds of weightlessness, before the actual suborbital event. It is intended to have a service ceiling of about 60,000 ft (18 km), offering a dark blue sky to passengers. This will allow tourists to practice before the real flight.

WhiteKnightTwo consists of a twin boom with two jet engines per hull.[8] One hull is an exact replica of that of SpaceShipTwo (to allow tourist training), and the other will carry cut-rate day-trippers into the stratosphere.

The design is quite different from the White Knight, both in size, use of tail, engine configuration and placement of cockpit(s). The White Knight uses two T-tails, but the WhiteKnightTwo uses two cruciform tails. Engine configuration is also very different, with engines hung underneath the wings on the WhiteKnightTwo as opposed to engines on either side of the sole cockpit on the White Knight.

General characteristics

* Payload: 17,000 kg to 50000 ft.; 200 kg satellite to LEO(test)
* Length: 24 m (79 ft)
* Wingspan: 43 m (141 ft)
* Powerplant: 4? Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308 turbofan

Performance

* Service ceiling: 21.3 km (70000 ft)

Gold Medal tomato, sliced & salted

Gold Medal is one of my favorite heirlooms. A softball-size tomato, its outer skin is sunny gold streaked with crimson, tending toward solid crimson at the poles. Inside, the flesh is pure gold. Best of all is the taste: sweet, tangy, and complex, almost winy, with a meaty, satisfying flesh that puts it among the top beefsteaks. Slice off a hunk, sprinkle it with sea salt, and enjoy one of the best things you will ever get from a garden. (This slice comes to me from my friend Todd, whose garden is magnificent.)

So this afternoon was the Blackhawks parade. I haven't seen Chicago this alive since the White Sox' Ticker Tape parade 5 years ago. The streets were crowded for miles and it was louder than ever. According to the ABC 7 News marquee, 2 million people attended the parade. Isn't that basically all of Chicago's population? Amazing.

There were Blackhawks flags, Chicago flags, a sea of red, elaborate headdresses, feathers, smiling faces, hockey sticks, posters, signs, excitement, confetti, handmade Stanley Cup replicas, INSANITY! It was beautiful. And it was hot. But it was so damn worth it.

I told myself that if the White Sox ever won the World Series or if the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, I would get a tattoo of the teams logos or a symbol of the team. I guess I should start planning out these tats.

Oh, and did I mention I saw the Stanley Cup IN REAL LIFE? It was fabulous. Thank you Blackhawks.

I might be the only Detroiter who doesn't like this slogan, but hey I'm from Canada and both Toronto and Montreal ( who has won more than 2 1/2 times more ) have won more Stanley Cups. The Hockeytown Cafe, which is owned by MIke Illitch ( who also owns The Detroit Tigers and Little Caesars Pizza ), opened in doors on Woodward in Downtown Detroit in 1998. It was originally going to be the location for The Hard Rock Cafe when the building was purchased,

Dusky Sunbird (Cinnyris fusca)

Dusky Sunbird (Cinnyris fusca)

Near-endemic to southern Africa, occurring from central Angola to Namibia and the western half of South Africa, marginally extending into south-western Botswana. It generally prefers drainage line woodland in succulent and Nama Karoo, semi-arid coastal plains with sand dunes, scrub along rivers and streams and rocky inselbergs with adequate cover, sometimes moving into gardens. It mainly eats nectar supplemented with arthropods, hawking insects aerially and gleaning prey from foliage and spider webs. The nest is built solely by the female in about a week, consisting of an oval-shaped structure with a side top entrance made of dry grass, plant fibres, dry leaves and bark, bound together with spider web. It sometimes decorates it with wool and paper, lining the interior with soft seed fibres and animal hair. It typically attaches the back of the nest using spider web to branches of a shrub or tree, or between the thorns of a prickly-pear cactus (Opuntia).
* Opportunistic breeder, as it lays its eggs after rainfall, usually in the period from June-March.
* It lays 2-3 eggs, which are incubated solely by the female for about 12-13 days.
* The chicks are brooded solely by the female but fed by both adults, leaving the nest after about 13-15 days. As juveniles they continue to roost in the nest for about 2 weeks longer, becoming fully independent soon afterwards.
Not threatened.

One of the most popular winter team sports in Canada, Road Hockey!

For Flickr Group Roulette's "Team Sports Zone".

It took a lot of tries to capture the ball in the air as it was going towards the camera using a timer/remote but I got this one. Too bad I have a goofy face in it...

Hockey tips #1-3 by The Dad

Hockey tips #1-3 by The Dad

1. Eat the puck or kill the play, rather than making a blind pass.
2. Pass the puck around, not through, opponents in our zone. Do not take chances in our own zone.
3. Always face the play. Don't circle away from the play.
Simon 'Dad' Gifford and Aly on training session last Thursday.
