Mamo (Hawaiian Sergeant), I think, based on the fish identification card from the store. Seems a lot of the fish we saw weren't on that card, but one of the coolest is, a 4 foot long Nunu Trumpetfish. Sadly, my camera was out of shots... but isn't that always how fish stories go?

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu

Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu

Early tomorrow morning I'm off to Scotland on a mystery trip. A charity called Odyssey (www.odyssey.org.uk) organises holidays for people who've had or still have cancer of any form. I don't know what I'll be doing while I'm there or who I'll meet. The joining instructions advise me to meet the group at 10:45am on Sunday in the car park by the ferry terminal in Dunoon. And that's as much as I know, apart from the sort of clothing I should take.

They said try to travel light; this is me travelling light. I have the minimum of clothing, my beloved and very old hiking boots, and rather a lot of cameras and a computer. I'm afraid that although they say we should leave cell phones and iPods at home, they're coming with me, I have a long journey, and how could I possibly not have the netbook with me so that I can download any photos I take? (Note to self: this is not a photography holiday.) I may take billions of photos, I may take none, but I plan to have a wonderful time.

The classic countryside

After what seemed like years of 50 hour weeks without holidays, finally a long weekend had arrived, and it was time to visit the country.

Cruising along what seemed like an endless dirt track on a motorbike, I arrived at a field which I was able to tell straight away was worthy of a photo.

I immediately hit the kill switch to cut the engine, put the motorbike stand down, and stepped off, I was mesmerised by this vast countryside beauty.

I reached over my shoulder to remove my camera backpack to discover it was covered in a thick layer of red dust from the long ride. Luckily the contents were well protected, as this would have been one of the most regrettable moments in my life had I not have been able to take a photo here.

My intended long weekend escape from my mobile phone, television, and computer didn’t seem to be much of one when I reflected on this real-life image of a field of the greenest lucern and bluest sky that man had ever seen.

I no longer felt like I was in the remote country of Australia, in fact, I felt like I was sitting in front of my Windows Desktop on a Giant computer screen, anxiously looking for my start button.

red rock at The Wave

Another example of the red rock at The Wave in Northern Arizona. The Wave can be located after a three mile hike and was surprisingly difficult to find. The rock looks like the rings of Saturn in certain places. We hiked there expecting sun and warmth, but there was a wind storm with gusts up to 60 MPH that blew sand everywhere, especially into my photo bag. I had flashes set up on stands for some cool family photos, and the wind blew them over, smashing an SD-400. With one flash left, I put it on the camera and tried to get the family in their positions. Suddenly, snow started falling. I snapped off a few flash photos and checked them. White, out-of-focus snowflakes dominated the frame. Flash photography was out of the question. With the family squinting away from the blowing sand and snow, I fired off two unlit group shots and we started packing up double time. The trip quickly turned into an escape attempt to get out of there before the world's next natural disaster began. It wasn't the way I wanted my precious Wave trip to go down after trying to get there for three years, but, at least we made it.

Strangley enough, most Americans have never heard of The Wave, but because it was profiled in a German movie, there are many, many Germans who travel across the world to experience it. I have hiked, camped, skiid, ATV'd and explored for most of my life, and I have never seen anything like The Wave. I highly recommend this trip. If you want to go, ensure you research the permit process before traveling there.

the story may be more interesting than the image. for sure it is funnier.
i am taking multiple, vertical pics (this is a two shot stitch) with my D300. the family has already moved down the trail and out of sight. i get the shots. tripod in one hand, camera in the other, i start to move away when a gust of wind threatens to blow my Leadville cap into the lake. my immediate reaction is to hold it on. unfortunately, i do not consider the large object i am holding, the camera, and bash my head with the edge of it. ouch! but i do manage to save the hat. that really hurts. i start to move on when i notice moisture on my forehead. does not seem to be sweat. no, it can't be. hmmmm. i put the camera and tripod down to check it out when a stream of blood starts to run down my nose. yikes! the cap was holding back a flood and down it flows when i take it off. blood on the rocks. i put my handkerchief on the source to stem the flow but now assume i look like a creature from some horror movie. other people on the trail seem to be avoiding me as i walk toward the family. after i gross them out i wash off in the lake and continue on with a minor headache and a spiffy red tint to my hair and cap.

There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

I met this lady at Hemis Gompa which is a secluded Tibetan monastery in the Himalayan hills of Ladakh.
she came with her husband and their new born baby.
We visited several temples and rooms together and we met again later in an old temple where some lamas and priests, in the presence of the oracle, where performing a ceremony.
They asked blessings for their child, it was done with oil and water.
According the Buddhist point of view, this first function is a way to celebrate a great occasion, a human rebirth who has the great potential to do something for others.
They allowed me to take as many pictures I wanted and I even did several videos with my camera.
I didn’t speak much to them but we shared many things with our eyes and many smiles that I might keep in a corner of my mind forever...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Test

This is a portion of the Scottsdale Bible Church orchestra in a Wednesday night rehearsal. I thought I'd try my new camera out in a not-so-ideal situation. Normally I'd use one of my Canon digital SLRs for this, but I had to see how this camera would do. Overall, I think it did pretty well, though I would do things differently if shooting in a similar situation again.

The camera was set to ISO 800 and I used tungsten white balance. Aperture was f5.0 and the shutter speed was 1/10 second. Joe, the conductor, is a bit blurred from his movement.

I processed using Panasonic's Silkypix RAW developer. I found the noise quite objectionable, so I used Noise Reduction Priority in Silkypix, which helped immensely -- though you can still see quite a bit of noise in the ceiling and in the black tops that the two closest violin players (Joan and Lisa) are wearing. The tungsten white balance was 3050 degrees Kelvin. It was a bit cool, so I increased the temp to 3200K in Silkypix.

The only thing I did in Photoshop CS4 was to slightly defog the picture, and I added a Levels layer to make the blacks more black. I also cropped to a 16:9 format (it was shot in 3:2 format and I thought the foreground -- music stands -- was unnecessary). I do like the star effect in the spotlights at the top of the picture.

What would I have done differently? I would have shot it at ISO 400 and used an aperture of about f3.5, focusing on Joe (or perhaps Joan's music) and living with a little less depth of field. With this camera, I will be sticking with ISO 400 and lower unless I absolutely have to have the extra light sensitivity. This camera did pretty well with this shot. In comparison, my Kodak C663 point-and-shoot would have totally bombed on a shot like this.

Panasonic Lumix TZ15 + INON S-2000 strobe with "wireless" trigger. F3.3 @ 1/30, ISO200, normal shooting mode, spot metering, auto white balance. Here, I think the auto white balance did a good job. The slightly reddish cast probably came from the torch I was holding to help the camera focus since the INON does not have a focusing light.

This harmonising unit belongs to Type G45 gun camera (12 volts Ref. No. 14A/1389 or 24 volts, ref n? 14A/1340) made by Williamson Mfg. Co. Ltd. London & Reading.

A harmonisiing unit is a plug-in mirror unit used to align the G45 gun camera (which was mounted in the wing next to a machine gun) with the gun alignment of a Spitfire (and other fighters). The harmonising unit fitted into a circular access hatch on the top of the camera body, and projected outside the wing surface allowing the field of view to be checked. The camera mounting could then be adjusted to aim the camera lens, covering the point at which the bullet streams from the guns converged in front of the aircraft

The G45 gun camera was used throughout WWII by British fighter units and armament schools from 1939 onwards.

Note the Americanised spelling of 'harmoniZing' which was used by the RAAF during WWII. Note that the black wooden box has its own part number (14A/1439).

Marketed as the Canon "Dream Lens" this lens was developed as one of the standard lenses for the Canon 7 rangefinder camera. It had the largest aperture in the world for photographic lenses available in the market at the time.

It attracts a great deal of attention as a "dream lens", as it is four times faster than the human eye.

The lens mount is clip-on, 3-lug bayonet system like the Mirror Box II (cameras have S mount inside bayonet mount). The edge of the rearmost lens element is cut off to avoid friction with interlocking roller of range finder mechanism. It is Gauss type lens with 7 elements in 5 groups.

Compact Film Cameras

My small collection of Compact cameras. From the back row then, left to right:

1. Minolta AF-E. Bought from a Charity shop for a pound, it came boxed with all the original booklets, and was bought from Boots in Grimsby, Christmas eve 1986. Currently has a test roll of film in it.

2. Panasonic Zoom C-2100ZM. This is the first camera I ever bought way back in 1992 I think. I knew nothing about cameras and bought this one because a) it has a zoom, and b) because it's Panasonic, and they make good stuff. It's missing a plastic window which fits above the lens, and isn't very compact, but was a very good camera. Still works, just not used it in ages.

3. Nikon L35AF. The first of two cameras I bought on a whim off eBay. This one was about a fiver, and works very well.

4. Olympus XA2. Because I can't afford an XA! This is, however, a very nice, compact camera. The zone focusing gives very sharp pics.

5. Konica C35 AF2. The second whim! Looks a really nice camera, but the autofocus is a bit random on this one. It seems to focus as it takes the photo, as opposed to just before. Disappointing.

I started a new project today. For the past few months I have been juggling three Nikons around my neck and it takes it's toll on the neck and shoulders. Today I just wanted to walk unencumbered and free.

So I just took a small Canon Ixus compact camera. During my walk I came across this great scene and great light. Bugger, I thought, I wish I had my DSLRs with me. I played around with my compact camera and put it into manual mode. This photo was the result.

On my stroll back I thought that it would be an interesting project to try and get some serious pictures from a small compact camera. Is there any truth in the old saying that it's not what you have, but what you do with it?

SAMSUNG Introduces Six New Digital Camcorders At CES 2009

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today unveiled six new digital camcorders at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company further solidified its leadership in the high-definition category with the announcement of five new full-HD models and introduced its next generation YouTube™ compatible compact digital camcorder. Several of Samsung’s new camcorders introduced at CES 2009 are also among the first to feature internal, flash based Solid State Drives (SSD), providing higher capacity, and faster, more durable onboard memory.

H-Series: HMX-H100, HMX-H104, HMX-H105, HMX-H106
Samsung’s H-Series of full-HD digital camcorders set a new standard for style and performance. The HMX-H106, Samsung’s new flagship full-HD digital camcorder, is the world’s first to feature an internal 64GB SSD (as of January 5, 2009). Samsung’s renowned SSD technology offers a substantial advantage over the use of Hard Disk Drives (HDD) in a digital camcorder, providing consumers with higher performing and more durable internal memory. Samsung’s SSD technology is more lightweight and compact, operates silently with very low heat emission, and features no moving parts, which significantly reduces overall power consumption and enhances reliability. No moving parts also make SSD technology more durable and resistant to shock and vibrations. Additionally, Samsung’s SSD technology is faster than HDD, including quicker boot-up and read/write speeds which is required for the amount of data recorded in full-HD resolution. At full-HD resolution and when set to fine mode, users can record up to three hours directly to the 16GB HMX-H104, six hours to the 32GB HMX H105, and an unparalleled 12 hours to the 64GB HMX-H106.

Each of the new H-Series full-HD camcorders feature a 1/4.5”, 2.2 mega-pixel CMOS imaging sensor, a 10x optical zoom, high-quality Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens, and Optical Image Stabilization to help counteract shaky video and blur. Samsung’s new H-Series camcorders also offer a direct connection for an HDMI cable, further simplifying the way HD video is viewed on an HDTV and eliminating the need for proprietary docking stations. But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, predating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armageddon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishizing gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here.
As for the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines--the real stars of the show--while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (license plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company.) The puppet stunt work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail-bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood.

i have added two new usb ports.

the hub i am normally using for SD card reader has become unrelieable.

luckily there are 4 extra ports on the mainboard! both of the extra channels are USB 2.0.

the gadget with the LEDs is the SD card reader for the digital camera.

the device on the right is the wireless modem! upto 300 kbyte/sec but usually 30 to100 to kbyte.

This is currently the state of my desk. "Wireless" is an inaccurate description, but this is all the cables and chargers I have aqquired since I went "wireless" about a year ago. You may notice that most of them are not even connected.

This was a great camera, but unfortunately it developed problems with its electronics and had trouble advancing film after some shots. On the left hand side of the camera, there is a slide out remote control. This was, before it too failed, a great aid in taking shots which included the photographer. It was unobtrusive when held in the hand.

It’s once again chucking it down with a tone of rain each day with little let up so I thought I would take the camera out for a wonder and shoot a few things. I ended up playing around with reflections in puddles, windows and other things like that.

This is Part One of two that I took using window reflections. I don’t think this one turned out that badly.
