This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "wood reels for wire and cable" for the year 2011. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

The War Between the States was the first large and prolonged conflict recorded by photography. During the war, dozens of photographers, both as private individuals and as employees of the Confederate and Union Governments, photographed civilians and civilian activities; military personnel, equipment, and activities; and the locations and aftermaths of battles. Because wet-plate collodion negatives required from 5 to 20 seconds exposure, there are no action photographs of the war.

The name Mathew B. Brady is almost a synonym for Civil War photography. Although Brady himself actually may have taken only a few photographs of the war, he employed many of the other well-known photographers before and during the war. Alexander Gardner and James F. Gibson at different times managed Brady's Washington studio. Timothy O'Sullivan, James Gardner, and Egbert Guy Fox were also employed by Brady during the conflict.

Not sure if this is an old equipment shed but that's what I think it is. There's a narrow door and a larger one - like what you might use for hand tools v/s larger items (plow etc.). It was divided in half inside, and they're working on restoring it (hense the boards propping up the side.)

When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, loosely affiliated groups of writers, artists, and other politically aware individuals emerged in New York City to give voice to anti-fascist sentiment by supporting the Spanish Republic. Facing Fascism: New York and the Spanish Civil War examines the participation of New Yorkers in the political struggles and armed conflict that many historians consider a critical precursor to World War II. Nearly half of the 2,800 Americans who volunteered to fight in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade against Generalissimo Francisco Franco came from the New York area. Fundraising, propaganda, and deployment for anti-fascists everywhere in America were orchestrated through New York City. At the same time, powerful voices in New York expressed sympathy for the pro-fascist side.
The fighting in Spain brought to the surface the complex ideological and ethnic identities always present in New York politics. Facing Fascism examines the full range of this experience, including that of the New Yorkers who supported Franco. It addresses the role of doctors, nurses, and social workers who left New York hospitals to provide assistance to the defenders of the Spanish Republic, as well as those who remained active on the home front. The book also describes the involvement of students in the war, the key role of writers and the media, and the contributions made by members of New York's art and theater communities.
Facing Fascism also serves as the catalog to an exhibition of the same name appearing at the Museum of the City of New York in the spring of 2007. The book and exhibition both make use of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives' extensive holdings, which range from historical documents to video recordings of oral histories. Numerous other libraries, archives, museums, and private collectors have also been consulted to make this the most complete exhibition of its kind ever mounted. The exhibition will also appear in Spain.

Times are tough. I will have to move in the middle of next month so i need to drum up some cash and reduce some of the stuff i already have. These are one of my favorite possessions. Its a set of goalie gear i used when we won our roller hockey league a few years ago. Shortly after this we moved to ice hockey where i have a different set of pads. I always wanted to play with this gear again so im sad to see it go. Hopefully i will get some decent money for it on ebay and i can use it for rent money.

2008 Sambar Hunt - West Pass Campsite Video

As this video shows, about 150 yards off the shore of West Pass, nestled amongst the Slash Pine and Palmetto, there is still plenty of wind, even on a mild day. It's a two and a half day hunt, plus a Wednesday scouting day. If you check-in as soon as you arrive there on Wednesday, you can get a couple of orange flag markers, as seen above. You can then use these to mark and reserve your campsite and hunt stand, until you can get unloaded and set up. See other notes in other photos for details.

Fiddler on the Roof Pump

This pump is supposed to look a lot rougher so I used wood from a previous set which had been roughed up. I then roughed up where I had cut. A coat of paint with drybrushing (simmillar to the finish already on it) will be put on it and then we'll run chains and an orbital sander over the edges to give it a worn look.

Black Alice (where I used to work) threw a tea party today, and I wanted to go despite quitting lolita fashion a while back (to spend my money on camera and dive equipment instead of clothing), so I disguised myself as a Mori Girl!

Mori Girl is another Japanese street fashion that's more recent, and aims for a more loose, free aesthetic than lolita fashion - followers of the fashion should look like they've just stepped out of the forest (except... more impractical than say hiking boots and a bottle cork hat).

Lifetime Dream # 33 of my list of 155: I will learn to snorkel and scuba dive, in rivers, lakes, and in the ocean. I will own all of my own gear, including a black and silver chrome diving mask, thick but flexible diving fins, a professional snorkel, black wet suit, a diving watch, and a chrome silver diving knife in a sturdy sheath. I will have a nice bag with which to case all of my equipment.

I often have said that quitting smoking was a gateway dream. Case in point, I had to quit smoking in order to receive my certification as a Scuba Diver. You actually can be a smoke, but you can’t smoke for a period before and after you dive or else you could really mess yourself up… I used it as a reason to just say I couldn’t smoke at all.

People have asked me what it’s like breathing underwater and it’s really hard to describe. When you’re in the dive pool it’s one thing. The water is clear, and worst case scenario you are only 30 feet to the surface. You can make that if you freak out or lose air, etc. When you’re 60 meters below however with very low visibility, it’s a different story.

I have always been fascinated with the ocean and the sea life. I used to want to be an oceanographer because I loved Sharks and studied them religiously. I have a LOT of respect for that animal. It’s a thrill and a rush to dive… maybe someday I will go underwater cave diving or through a ship wreck. But for now I’ll stick with the deep lakes in Texas and the occasional costal dive.

The day of my first non-tank dive was the same day that I would have outlived my sister. Halloween 2009. I was nervous for a lot of reasons, mostly because I was afraid synchronicities would catch up to me and irony would take over. I felt like I shouldn’t be tempting so much fate at once. I highly suggest this form of recreation. It’s expensive, but well worth the adventures!

Note: I added the shark into the shot as a reminder of my love and total respect for the ocean and the animals contained within! I absolutely love, fear and respect these animals!

My camera...

Hello, and a Happy New Year to you!

First off, here's hoping 2008 brings all you flickr folk reading this, a new year laden with decisive moments galore. Provided of course your camera doesn't spring the film it's loaded with, lose its battery juice, or get left at home. So, with traditions, and cameras in mind, I've noticed it's something of a flickresque rites of passage to post a photo or four, of the camera and kit one uses. Seeing as I'm sometimes asked about what camera I use*, and how I go about utilising it, I thought it was about time I stepped up to the plate and performed my community duty.

As you can see from the pic, I'm something of a traditionalist. I like to keep things simple, and use this one of a kind, fully manual camera. I use the kit equipment, which includes the one lens there, and a flashgun. It dates back to some time or other, when old cameras such as this looked like they were made out of leftover tinfoil and sellotape. The original horsehair neck-strap has long since disintegrated, and I'm now using a bit of old string to keep it around my neck. Like I said, I like to keep things simple. Having said that, most of the time like all fellow photofreaks, I walk around with my camera firmly in fists ready to strike that decisive moment off guard. Knock it dead. Stone cold.

I tend to take most of my photos underground, on the tube, and contrary to what you might be thinking, using a large camera such as this is not a particular problem for candid photography. Far from it in fact! Rather than putting fellow passengers on guard, anxious or even suspicious of what I'm up to, they tend not to notice. They probably think that such a cumbersome relic is unusable, with its working days numbered. An antique from a bygone age that I'm most likely meeting my broker about, with a view to auctioning off at Sotheby's. Once I’m disregarded as some quaint eccentric, people tend to roll their eyes, settle back into their familiar traveling routines leaving me free to move in, and harvest those unguarded moments. For the techies amongst you, I disable the flashgun, and work with the natural light… provided that is I remember to unscrew the lens cap.

Oh, and for all you Winogrand-wannabes, I know what you’re about to ask. The answer is “YES!” this is without a doubt the perfect camera for a bit of no holds barred, hardcore street photography. When you’ve got this baby pressed up against your face, it’s like you’ve slipped into an invisible cloak. In the 1940's and later this "capanna" used to be a barn for agricultural equipment, and the top floor was a "fienile" (place to keep the hay). The "contadini" (farmers) who used to live in my house and surrounding areas would gather there to dance to the sound of a "fisarmonica" (an accordeon), so the place has good vibes!
The fienile is now my painting studio. The ground floor has been turned into a small apartment and showroom for my work.
