Harvest Marker Found 1

Harvest Marker Found 1

On one of my husband's trips with business in Oregon, we trekked out to Seaside in order to see one the many beautiful ocean beaches there. Since we moved away from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, we never realized how much we really enjoyed always having the option of going to the beach whenever we liked. We really get to missing it now that we don't have that option. Thus, whenever we can make it out there during a summer or late spring month, we make a point to pay the old friend a visit.

When we arrived at our destination, we decided to go for a nice long barefoot walk up the beach. We walked and walked for about a mile or two while playing chase with the waves and writing little love notes to each other and the Lord along the way with our trusty little weather worn beach sticks, accompanied by tiny lover squabbles, when suddenly we started seeing many broken sand dollars. We were amazed at the abundance of them but remembered that a severe and devastating storm had hit the Oregon coast in that area just prior to our making a trip there. It was so bad, in fact, that it actually uprooted many of the huge trees, exposing the roots since the trees had been ripped up and toppled on their sides, along the coastline that we witnessed on our way there and back that day. That part of the country is not used to heavy winds, so it doesn't fare well when it happens. We'd never seen anything like this upheaval of trees and sand dollars in our lives on any Oregon coastal line or beach.

We started taking lots of pictures of the broken sand dollars when I stumbled across one like this one in the picture above. I figured it was just another broken sand dollar but with the broken side down, so I took the advantage of photographing it at many different angles since it looked like a whole sand dollar. Then when I finished, I picked it up and low and behold it was a whole sand dollar--the very first I had ever found in my entire life. It seemed the only whole one among the broken many.

It was not alone, however, since we then ran into a whole slew of whole sand dollars, not a few more yards away. There had to have been more than 50 whole sand dollars in that small area alone, not to mention all of the others up the beach. From our viewpoint, we could see in the distance that there were hundreds more up the beach. We just stood there for some time gawking at this mother load.

After this initial buzz wore off, we realized we could only carry I think about 25 of them, however, since we did not come prepared to carry off such a haul. Furthermore, we were getting tired and hungry and grumpy, so we also knew we wouldn't be able to come back for any of the others. As a result, I carried about 12, and my husband carried about 13; then, we tootled off back toward our car after photographing them galore.

When we came back in view of the people at the main beach, they stood agape at us, making hilarious comments as we walked by. One such comment was something like, "Hey, did you leave some for anyone else?" or "Wow, what a great find; you could make money from that!" Gauging from the reaction of the onlookers, I'm surprised there wasn't a stampede in the general direction we came from for the rest of the sand dollars because of our find.

Upon reflection, I am reminded it is the storms of life--hardship, illness, sickness, disease, accidents, injury, persecution, lack, famine, war, and natural disaster (like Hurricane Ike and the tornadoes that hit the Midwest recently)--that bring in for the Lord the mother load of souls, stranded on the beaches of life. Though He is not the one who necessarily sends the storms, He does respond to those cries of anguish and humility directed at Him for mercy. He gathers up the first who seems to be sticking out of the wet sand like a diamond and then continues to look farther up the beaches for more, knowing good and well that they are there because of the first marker but still having to press forward to find them all. At the peculiar sight of His bringing in His haul, He is sometimes mocked or laughed at in envy or jealousy or admired and gawked at in amazement and wonder, depending on the bystander's vantage point and disposition in life.

It is in these moments that we are reminded to pray to Christ Jesus, the Lord of the Harvest, to send workers into the harvest field as He tells us in Luke 10:2-3:

"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go!" (NIV)

When the harvest marker is found, letting on that more are to come, this passage comes to life:

The kingdom of heaven is like hidden treasure in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of grea

Q&A: Sisters in a "Sweet Rush" to make music and help Somalis

GENEVA, November 2 (UNHCR) – Born in Mogadishu, Siham and Iman Hashi are the first female Somali artists to sign a record deal with a major American label. After the civil war broke out in Somalia in the 1990s, the girls and their family moved to Canada as refugees. They are currently in Los Angeles recording their first album as "Sweet Rush" with Universal Motown, while finding time to raise awareness about the continuing suffering in their homeland. The sisters discussed their lives and work recently with UNHCR Web Editor Leo Dobbs in Geneva, where they performed at the Nansen Refugee Award ceremony. Excerpts from the interview:

Tell us about your departure from Somalia

Siham: We were born in Somalia but we don't have many memories of it. Our mother was a Somali diplomat and we moved to Saudi Arabia. We stayed there for a year or two and then moved to Germany. When the civil war broke out [in 1991] we were resettled in Canada. When we came to Toronto [with their parents, two sisters and a brother], we had to learn English. We noticed that [in Toronto] we weren't really getting the things that we asked for anymore. Our parents tried their best. They sheltered us a lot and they never made us feel like we had nothing, even though we had to start all over again.

Toronto's a pretty cosmopolitan city. Did you ever face problems there?

Iman: We realised we were different when we were in middle school. I think before middle school, we just thought, "Okay, we're kids." Many people said things that went over our heads. But at middle school I realised, kids were going to ask, "Like, where are you from?" "I'm from Somalia." "You're from Somalia? That's where all the starving people are and the kids with the big stomachs and the orphans." I was like, "What! No. Somalia is beautiful, it's just going through stuff."

It was so hard. Kids are mean in middle school. That's when I realised that people thought, "Oh, so you're a refugee." And I was like, "How do you know that I'm not a refugee?" And then I heard my Mum say that we are. That's when I realised that we were different.

Where did the music come from?

Imam: We grew up in a very traditional and religious [Muslim] home. My Dad was very strict and he was worried about education and never encouraged music. But my Mum was more lenient and would let us play Whitney Houston and other popular music when we were younger, and we would sing. And she would say, "You girls can sing." The interesting thing is that my parents can sing too, but nobody really encouraged it in the house. So it was just us singing together all the time and at school and with our friends. We never took singing lessons. Training was all school based, like vocal class and the school play.

How did you make the next step?

Imam: We moved to Atlanta. It was a very difficult thing getting to Atlanta because our parents would say, "No, we want you to go to college and become doctors. That's why we brought you to this country. This is your opportunity to do great things." We were like, "We love school, school's always going to be there, but can we just pursue our passion." It was like a battle, back and forth.

But finally my Dad said okay and we moved to Atlanta because my Dad's sister lived there and he said, "I trust her, so you guys live with her." That's the only reason we were allowed to go there. We were just meeting people and recording in studios. It was really difficult. But then when we landed the record deal, it was like: "Oh, my gosh." Back home, my parents got a lot of [strife]. People aren't very happy about their decision to let us go because in the Somali culture and religion it's taboo.

So everybody was mad at my parents. The Somali community is very tightknit. Our parents didn't care and said, "We trust our daughters and this is what they want to do and we have to respect that." So we got the record deal and . . . people back home thought, "They're actually doing this." Now we're starting to work with these amazing producers and a lot of great things are happening.

Do you sing about refugees?

Imam: Yes, we have the song that we performed at the Nansen Awards, "Shelter." It does not talk specifically about shelter and refugees. But it was meant to be vague, so that anybody listening to it can feel like it's talking to them. Listen to the song – it can be talking about refugees.

And then, "Take me Home," of course. We wanted to write a song about Somalia, but we didn't want to leave anybody out. So anybody from any co

PARLIAMENT BUILDING
The building was constructed in 1892 by Richard Waite. It was designed in pinkish red sandstone with fine archways in the facade.

A fire in 1909 destroyed the west wing, that was reconstructed with Italian marble, while the east wing still shows the original wooden details.

Within the building is the parliament chamber, where political parties debate a wide range of issues including healthcare & education. From the visitor galleries above, you can view a session of the provincial parlimament.

There are numerous Legislative & Community exhibits found throughout the first floor hallways, mainly focusing on the history, culture heritage and parliament of Ontario. One historic gem here is Upper Canada's first mace, which was taken by American Troops during the 1812 war, and returned in 1934.

38 year old Toro 2-stage snowblower (with Power Turns)

Model 31760
produced in 1972
For an older machine it runs great. Starts on the 1st or 2nd pull.
I just bought it last week. I was able to give it a trial run before I bought it with the big snows we had (21 ") and I liked it's performance.

I am going to put new snow tires on it. I was able to purchase an Owner's Manual & this machine came new with Turf Tires. If you have slipping & spinning problems (which it does) you were to install tire chains. I am choosing Snowtires.

Guess I can't keep using Illinois driving habits now that I'm back in good old BFE, Wisconsin. I've been stopped twice this month- but both the Omar (Sheriff/Sharif- get it?) and the Trooper let me off with a warning. And no, I don't bat my eyelashes or give a sob story. I just honestly admit how fast I was actually going when they ask if I know why I was pulled over and apologize politely for not following the regulations.

I actually used to be a fairly lawful and obedient driver until I spent about a year and a half living in the Chicago area. After I moved back to Wisconsin, I started getting terrible feelings of road rage dealing with slow drivers and getting upset that people here actually slow down for yellow lights and follow speed limits. The worst culprits are minvans of any make and Buicks- guaranteed to piss me off. The list of fake rules and driving habits below actually seemed to be followed pretty closely by drivers in Chicago city proper and suburbs from what I witnessed.

Driving in Illinois: Basic Rules (Kids- don't try these at home... save them for your visit to Chi-town!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A real Illinois driver never uses them.
2. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in an even more dangerous situation.
3. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered going with the flow.
4. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit.
5. Never, ever come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will inevitably result in you being rear ended. If you want your insurance company to pay for a new rear bumper, come to a complete stop at all stop signs.
6. A right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barrels.
7. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork. Illinois is a no-fault insurance state and the other guy doesn't have anything to lose.
8. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to stretch your legs.
9. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a good way to scare people entering the highway.
10. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are apparently not enforceable in Illinois during rush hour.
11. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move over doesn't mean that a Illinois driver flashing his high beams behind you doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.
12. Please remember that there is no such thing as a shortcut during rush-hour traffic in Illinois.
13. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tire.
14. Learn to swerve abruptly. Illinois is the home of high-speed slalom driving thanks to the State Highway Department, which puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.
15. It is traditional in Illinois to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes.
16. Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and left before proceeding.
17. Remember that the goal of every Illinois driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

(No wonder we call 'em FIBs here...) ;)

What???? I'm not white!!!

What???? I'm not white!!!

I got a ticket on the way from Chris's this evening...one head light...I tried to explain that I had to work late, because I got to work late this morning, because I was trying to vote with the new machines that remind me of the nintendo, and that it made me want to write myself in...twice...and that I didn't want to go to the S&S tire because they quoted me 7 dollars to change a light in the past, but once my car was apart I owed them 50...I still don't understand...furthermore, I didn't realize that you were suppose to keep your registration in the car, in case it gets stolen, because it indicates ownership...he said that I was wrong...the title indicated ownership and the registration shows that you have paid the taxes...at which point I asked if that was what the sticker was for...he seemed a little agitated at this point...since I was less than 50 feet away from my apartment and the papers were there, I asked if I could go get them, at which he asked that I sit in my car and find my insurance...he eventually sent another cop to get my insurance after I waived it out the window to indicate that I had found it...becausue it took me forever to find it...I did find my Allstate Dental Insurance card rather quickly...and then I had to prove that it was dental...very complicated...

The cop did mark that I was white...even with my weirdo name... That was the point of the long weird story above

1901 Packard replica child's car

This spectacular 1/2 scale 1901 Packard Child's car spent's entire life with on family in So. California since 1962. It was most likely built from plans supplied by Mechanix Illustrated. The family believed it to be a factory built unit as the quality and professionalism in the build is so great. But if you look at the plans it is a dead ringer for the M.I. car. It is only about 4' long and freatures an approx. 4 hp. Briggs and Straton 1 cyl engine circa early 1960's. It has a rope pull starter and runs every time with a little choke. Hand throttle, floor brake peddle and tiller steering and a centrifigal clutch. The paint and upholstry is in excellent condition, as it was used by only two little girls when built. We installed a brand new set of hard rubber tires on the cast aluminum artillary wheels.
