Convection Oven With Microwave

convection oven with microwave

    convection oven
  • A cooking device that heats food by the circulation of hot air

  • This oven has a fan built into it that circulates the air and cooks the food more evenly than conventional ovens. It does not require preheating and uses conventional cookware.

  • Convection ovens or fan ovens or turbo ovens augment a traditional oven by circulating heated air using a fan. The fan motor is in a separate enclosure, to protect it from overheating and melting any plastic components including wire insulation.

  • An oven with fans that move the hot air around to give more even heat.

    microwave
  • cook or heat in a microwave oven; "You can microwave the leftovers"

  • kitchen appliance that cooks food by passing an electromagnetic wave through it; heat results from the absorption of energy by the water molecules in the food

  • An electromagnetic wave with a wavelength in the range 0.001–0.3 m, shorter than that of a normal radio wave but longer than those of infrared radiation. Microwaves are used in radar, in communications, and for heating in microwave ovens and in various industrial processes

  • a short electromagnetic wave (longer than infrared but shorter than radio waves); used for radar and microwave ovens and for transmitting telephone, facsimile, video and data

Breville BOV650XL Compact 4-Slice Smart Oven with Element IQ

Breville BOV650XL Compact 4-Slice Smart Oven with Element IQ

Similar to the Breville Smart Oven, but in a smaller, more compact design, this 1800-watt oven offers exceptional cooking convenience while taking up less space on the counter. The unit's 3/5-cubic-foot nonstick interior can accommodate a 12-inch pizza or four slices of bread at a time, while its push-button and turn-knob control panel makes it easy to program. Turn the control dial to select the function--options include Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, and Reheat. The oven's Element IQ "smart" sensor technology puts the power where it's needed most to ensure energy-efficient operation. For each of the eight pre-set functions, Element IQ automatically adjusts the power and calculates the cooking time. The time and temperature for the pre-set programs can also be manually adjusted to accommodate individual preferences--the oven will even remember the new settings for next time. Use the second control dial for setting the time (from one minute up to two hours) and for adjusting the temperature (from 120 to 450 degrees F), as well as for selecting the number of slices and for setting the toast shade, from light to dark. The control panel also offers a large start/cancel button, a defrost button for frozen foods, and a temperature-conversion button for recipes with cooking temperatures in Celsius. The oven's easy-to-read backlit LCD screen shows the current function, temperature, and adjustments made--plus it illuminates orange to indicate preheating and cooking, then blue to indicate the end of the cooking cycle. Other highlights include a tempered-glass door, three rack positions, and a front-access removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Accessories include a 10-by-10-inch enamel baking pan and a 10-by-10-inch enamel broil rack. Attractively housed in coated steel with a strikingly modern design, the countertop oven measures 16-1/2 by 14-1/4 by 10 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Gaming Mode takes the gaming experience to a new level by reducing game control delay, thus giving the player improved reaction time and a more realistic playing experience. This is great when used with popular gaming consoles, or with PC games using the TVs PC Input.
Built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital tuning allows for tuning of standard cable channels as well as off-air digital broadcasts, in addition to digital "cable-in-the-clear" broadcasts.
Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5 percent that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets.
Cinema Mode 24 fps (3:2 Pulldown): This HDTV performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
Color Temperature Control enables you to adjust white balance to achieve the best television picture possible in any viewing environment, or simply adjust the picture to suit your personal tastes. The "Warm" setting delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room, while "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.
Three TheaterWide modes are ideal for displaying HDTV signals as well as enhanced for widescreen television DVDs.
TheaterWide 1: Letterboxed image is digitally expanded 33 percent horizontally and vertically. Useful for reproducing Academy Standard (1.85:1) formatted software.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Overwhelming requests for radiation survey meters

Overwhelming requests for radiation survey meters

Thank you for taking an interest in SE International's radiation detection instrumentation.

Since 1979 RADIATION ALERT® instruments have proven ideal for a wide range of applications.

As the manufacturer of our products, we have engineered them to be reliable, simple to use and understand, and affordably priced.

We're dedicated to our customers and promise to help you find the appropriate instrument for your needs.

Emergency Response and Preparedness

Since the event of September 11, we have had an increased amount of calls from individuals wanting to be informed if a radiation event takes place. Radiation is a scary topic for most individuals, but some basic knowledge will help in determining what action to take when exposed to radiation in an emergency response situation.

The types of radiation encountered during such an event are alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha and beta are particles and gamma is a ray/photon.

A piece of paper can stop alpha and a few millimeters of aluminum foil can stop most betas.

We say most beta energies because there are high energy betas that are more penatrable.

Most people consider alpha and beta not to be of a concern; however, these particles can be ingested or inhaled and cause damage to the body.

There are high and low levels of gamma, but the primary concern with gamma radiation is the amount of time you are exposed to it.

There are two types of monitoring devices that are applicable in an emergency response to radiation.

One is a rate meter/general purpose Geiger counter.

This type of instrument shows the rate that the radiation is being received.

The other is a dosimeter. A dosimeter shows the amount/dose being received.

When measuring radiation in an emergency response situation, it is good to have something to compare your readings to.

Taking a background radiations level in your area before a radiation event, will help you determine if you have a radiation elevation and whether or not to stay in that location.

Background radiation is naturally occurring radiation that is always present.

It includes; high energy gamma rays from the sun and outer space and alpha, beta, gamma radiation emitted from elements in the earth. Using a rate meter, you can determine what your normal background is.

It is up to the individual to decide what a safe radiation level is because it differs depending on the individual and their knowledge of radiation and its affects.

As an example; say your background level is 25 CPM (counts per minute) where you live.

When you fly in an air plane at 30,000 feet your rate meter is getting 200 CPM for anywhere between 2 to 5 hours.

That is 8 times what your normal background is on the ground, but it is for a limited amount of time.

There are non-occupational dose limits set by the government which is 100 mR per year above background per year.

What we suggest for a good emergency response kit for radiation is a general purpose Geiger counter like the Monitor 4, a carbon fiber dosimeter such as the PEN200 and a Charger to reset the dosimeter. T

here are electronic dosimeters, however, if you are in the blast zone of a nuclear bomb the pulse of the bombs render most electronic inoperable but the carbon style dosimeters will still operate.

A Brief Overview of Radiation Detection

None of the instruments listed in this website detect neutron, microwave, RF (radio frequency), laser, infrared, or ultraviolet radiation.

All of the instruments are most accurate for Cesium 137 and isotopes of similar energies.

Some isotopes detected relatively well are Cobalt 60, Technicium 99M, Phosphorous 32, Strontium 90, and many forms of Radium, Plutonium, Uranium, and Thorium.

Some forms of radiation are very difficult or impossible for a Geiger tube to detect.

Tritium is a byproduct of a nuclear reactor and is used in research.

The beta emissions from Tritium are so weak that there are very few instruments that are capable of detecting it.

More sophisticated equipment is needed for the measurement of environmental samples, such as radioactivity in milk, produce, soil, etc., unless you are looking for gross contamination.

The radiation from some isotopes can cause a Geiger tube to overexcite and indicate a higher level of radiation than is actually present.

Americium 241 is an example of this phenomenon.

Americium 241 is used in some smoke detectors and many different types of industrial density and flow meters.

Unless you know exactly what you are measuring and understand the limitations of detection instruments, it is possible to draw misleading conclusions from your readings.

We design our instruments to detect the broadest range of ionizing radiation possible and still be affordable.

The full spectrum of ionizing radiation cannot be measured by one single instrument.

Everyone agrees that radioactive materials can be dangerous. We encourage you to seek out other sources of information.

Swiss Weather Anomaly - animation

On the morning of the 24th of April 2009 employees at MeteoSwiss (Switzerland's Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology) got the surprise of their lives. Huge circular fields hovering over Switzerland were picked up by their radars. The question was asked as to whether a massive UFO was in the upper-atmosphere above the scenic mountainous nation or perhaps these circles were signs of an imminent hurricane or maybe some sort of electromagnetic radio frequency/microwave technology is in use to cause such an anomaly.

Felix Schacher, a senior Meteorologist at MeteoSwiss claimed the circles were not UFOs or the signs of a hurricane about to wreak havoc on his country. Mr Schacher told the Swiss news site '20 Minutes' that they were merely caused by the reflection of water droplets that just happened to form a circular shape.

A few minutes after being queried on the issue the radar images were hurriedly removed from the departments website. Many Swiss UFO researchers have left comments on various internet forums expressing their doubt on the 'reflection water droplets' story, asking why was the image so quickly removed and who ordered its removal.

Many people also left some comments on forums asking if the interference patterns shown on the meteorological map, could be caused by trials in relation to the startup of the LHC - Large Hadron Collider near Geneve also, in Switzerland.

Please, feel free to comment!!

Little house by the sea, except the paved the sea.

Seriously, one of the postcards we found showed the bay - where we moored alongside the quay was originally deep water. The rocks are the remains of the shore (further round they've been gouged out to provide access).

I didn't get a shot of the house nearer the village, but I wanted to. It was very similar, except the front door was open, so I could see deep into the house (which explains not wanting to point a camera through the door). The central corridor terminates in the far room, at the centre of which is a big traditional fire place, shaped like a blast furnace or cooling tower, with a hole cut in the side to all heat out and fuel in. The whole thing is very traditional, decked out in white and blue. And in the middle of which is a white plastic microwave. Makes a certain sort of sense I suppose; both cook food.

I threw this large platter on my kick wheel. After trimming a foot into the bottom, it was dried and bisque fired.
After the first firing, I glazed my scale design to the top and sides of the platter. The foot around the bottom was glazed in a bright red, for a pop of color. It was then refired.

This platter can be hung on the wall :) The hanger is built into the foot of the platter for easy storage!

Long Distance Building of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company

Long Distance Building of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company

Tribeca, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States of America

The Long Distance Building of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company was designed by noted architect Ralph Walker, a specialist in the design of communications buildings and partner in the office of Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker; it is one of the largest and best known of his buildings for that industry and is the last of his downtown Manhattan skyscrapers.

Offering upon its completion in 1932 "a range of communications activities not to be seen elsewhere in the world," the building was actually the result of three major building campaigns. Commissioned by telephone executive Union N. Bethell, the original core — called the Walker Lispenard Building - was designed by Cyrus L.W. Eidlitz and McKenzie, Voorhees & Gmelin, Walker's predecessor firm.

It was erected in 1911-14 and enlarged by seven stories later in that decade. A massive alteration, commissioned by James S. McCulloh and designed by Walker, was executed in 1930-32. The building's polychromatic, rough-textured brick exterior, terminating in light-colored brick parapets, champions the Art Deco style through its setbacks, overall sculpted quality, and linear ornament; appropriately, this progressive, technologically-inspired aesthetic successfully broadcasts the building's role in housing the technologically sophisticated equipment of a critical American industry.

Upon the completion of the alterations in 1932, the Long Distance Building was the world's largest long-distance center; its huge concentration of equipment made it a communication crossroads for long-distance telephone calls in the Northeastern United States and all transoceanic calls, for the nationwide network of radio broadcasting companies, and for teletypewriting and telephotography. The building retains both its exterior architectural integrity and its significance to the communications industry.

Early History of the Site

The developmental history of Block 192, on which the Long Distance Building now stands, is similar to that of the surrounding Tribeca neighborhood. During the late eighteenth century, the block was wholly within the farm of the Lispenard family.

The streets adjacent to this block were laid out in the first years of the nineteenth century and paved in 1810; development quickly followed in the form of frame and masonry dwellings. During the commercial transformation of the neighborhood later in the century, some of New York's most prominent merchants - including Peter Lorillard, the Roosevelt family, and Jeremiah Dimick -- bought property on the block.

Some merchants converted the dwellings to business use; others replaced them with store and loft buildings, largely of five stories. However, clusters of older structures survived into the twentieth century at the northwest and southeast corners of the block. In 1909 the New York Telephone Company purchased nine contiguous lots, forming an irregularly-shaped parcel with fronts on both Walker and Lispenard Streets, on which it planned to build its headquarters.

The New York Telephone Company, AT&T, and the Long Lines Department

The telephone business developed rapidly following the early successes of Alexander Graham Bell's inventions in the 1870s. Many small, regional companies were created such as the New York Telephone Company, but these came to be controlled by the American Bell Telephone Company. In 1885, a subsidiary of American Bell, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T, and commonly called the Long Distance Company), was incorporated in New York with the purpose of building and operating long-distance telephone lines and connecting the regional companies.

By the turn of the century AT&T had become the central institution of the Bell System. It assumed the holding-company functions previously exercised by American Bell and continued to operate long-distance telephone service — eventually extending to radio-telephone circuits for overseas calls - through its Long Lines Department.

During the early twentieth century, the department's revenues increased dramatically (from $12 million in 1913 to nearly $100 million in 1930) and the necessary infrastructure was built to handle this growth, including many large office and operations structures. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Bell Telephone Company consistently chose for its corporate skyscrapers a modernistic architectural aesthetic and, in so doing, established itself as a prominent and progressive modern business.

Among the people who played a vital role in the organization of the industry was Union N. Bethell (1859-1919).3 A native of Indiana and alumnus of Hanover College, Bethell was employed by the Bell System, starting out with the New York and New Jersey Telephone Company in Brooklyn in 1889.

The general manager of the independent New York Telephone Company by 1893, his business skills proved essential to the industry, whi

Kim Yuna’s performance has explosive viewer ratings

Just earlier this evening, figure skater Kim Yuna set a world record in the Olympics ladies figure skating short program to the excitement and pride of many fans and Koreans. Even though this wasn’t a medal event, the viewer ratings in Korea were off the chart!

The average ratings for the whole event was 33.7%. 61.5% of the people watching TV across the nation tuned in. When it was closer to Kim Yuna’s performance, the ratings went up quite a bit to 36.2%. 65.9% of the couch potatoes across the nation tuned in.

Foundations for Teaching Excellence: Connecting Early Childhood Quality Rating, Professional Development, and Competency Systems in States (National Center for Research on Early Childhood Education)

Improving teacher quality in early education is a major part of ensuring young children s school readiness and closing the achievement gap. This is the book decision-makers and administrators need to begin developing coordinated, effective teacher-quality systems ones that not only get teachers ready for the classroom, but also promote continuous learning of new skills and strategies.
This book is the first effort to integrate at a state level three critical components of teacher quality: Early Childhood Education Competencies, Professional Development, and Quality Rating Systems. After an in-depth exploration of all three components and their role in high-quality education, readers will get detailed analyses of how six states are making progress toward integrating them. Through case studies on each state, readers will examine the diverse approaches these systems are taking to determining early childhood education competencies and systematically linking them with professional development and quality rating systems (QRS); developing and managing the structure, content, and delivery of effective professional development; creating clear partnerships between state organizations to promote integration of systems; and more.
A call-to-action volume on three of the hottest topics in ECE, this book is an essential reference for taking the first steps toward statewide, integrated teacher quality systems and ensuring that every young child gets the best possible education.

For the Flickr Group Roulette challenge for July 13th, 2008 - Words on Skin

It's a very personal affirmation for me at the moment! This month will mark my 2nd year away from home to teach in Korea. I wish to share a (now defunct) blog entry I wrote on my 2 month anniversary of living in Korea. Most is still apt today (I do have a cell phone and an oven now, wahooo!)

18 September 2006, Surfacing

My adventure in South Korea is now well into the 2nd month. My settling in period reminds me of learning to scuba dive. We were taught that if you become disorientated underwater and visibility does not allow you to determine ’which way is up’ you should follow the direction your airway bubbles float.

I am delighted that my constant state of disorientation is lessening. Yup, not only has this gal surfaced her head above the choppy waters, she is now developing a jaunty synchronised swimming routine!

Being a believer of living in the present moment, I do however do chuckle quietly at the differences thus far in my daily routine:

• I do not have a mobile phone. To think I had 2 at home...
• I catch a bus or walk everywhere. No car!!

• I cannot read most labels/packets/cooking instructions
• I do not have a microwave
• Or an oven
• All restaurants do home delivery for free
• Unfortunately, I cannot ring them and communicate what I would like or direct them to where I live!

• My landline monthly rental charge is $5 (beat that Telstra)
• My income tax rate is 2% (beat that Johnny)
• I refuse to pay $40+ for beef
• I happily pay $5 a kilo for rice
• $7 for an avocado
• and only $3 for a bottle of soju (fermented sweet potato wine)

• I eat pasta with chopsticks
• I eat black forest cake with chopsticks

• I do not have instant running hot water
• Toilet paper is 1ply
• The smallest pack size sold is 25 rolls
• Loo paper rolls are now creatively stacked in cupboards throughout my studio

• My lounge chair was found on the side of the road
• Unfortunately, the brown vinyl cushion is missing
• Fortunately, I carted it through he backstreets without anyone spotting me!

• Hello Kitty is cheap

Nuff said! This IS the adventure I was looking for!

Recycling rack

Recycling rack

My makeshift recycling center made of 2x4, MDF board, and three laundry baskets. This cost about $18 to build, not including the new circular saw I bought to replace my old one (which was branded Montgomery Ward, to give you an idea of how old it is). Anyway, with this setup it's really easy to throw the bins in the back of the truck and unload them at our community recycling center.

Now that I've cleaned up a substantial amount of clutter in our small utility room, I might have room for a little workbench. I want to get my painting supplies off the little rickety microwave cart they currently occupy.

  • Convection is the movement of molecules within fluids (i.e. liquids, gases) and rheids. It cannot take place in solids, since neither bulk current flows nor significant diffusion can take place in solids.

  • the transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular motion

Swype Keyboard
Swype Keyboard
An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.
In the image to the right, the word "quick" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.
AT&T 4G Network

This phone runs on AT&T's dual-band 850/1900 MHz 4G network (UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+), and with HSPA+ you'll experience mobile data speeds up to 4x faster than ordinary mobile broadband--up to approximately 6 Mbps (download). AT&T has deployed HSPA+ to virtually 100 percent of its mobile broadband network, which enables 4G speeds when combined with enhanced backhaul (via Ethernet or fiber).
Backhaul is one of the major pieces of a telecommunications network. Think of it as the limbs connecting AT&T's cell towers with AT&T's backbone network that provides access to the Internet.
Coming later in 2011, AT&T will deliver a second layer of 4G network called LTE (Long Term Evolution) that is even faster than HSPA+ speeds.
In areas where either AT&T's 3G or 4G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.
Note: AT&T's 4G mobile broadband coverage is not available in all areas. 4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul; availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment.

Swiss Weather Anomaly #2 - 24.Apr.2009

Swiss Weather Anomaly #2 - 24.Apr.2009

Radio frequencies occupy the range from a few tens of hertz to three hundred gigahertz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum. Other types of electromagnetic radiation, with frequencies above the RF range, are microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Since the energy of an individual photon of radio frequency is too low to remove an electron from an atom, radio waves are classified as non-ionizing radiation.

A boy is a young male human (usually child or adolescent), as contrasted to its female counterpart, girl, or an adult male, a man.
The term "boy" is primarily used to indicate biological sex distinctions, cultural gender role distinctions or both. The latter most commonly applies to adult men, either considered in some way immature or inferior, in a position associated with aspects of boyhood, or even without such boyish connotation as age-indiscriminate synonym. The term can be joined with a variety of other words to form these gender-related labels as compound words.
Ongoing debates about the influences of nature versus nurture in shaping the behavior of girls and boys raises questions about whether the roles played by boys are mainly the result of inborn differences or of socialization. Images of boys in art, literature and popular culture often demonstrate assumptions about gender roles.

Foundations and Industrial Applications of Microwave and Radio Frequency Fields: Physical and Chemical Processes

Foundations and Industrial Applications of Microwaves and Radio Frequency Fields Physical and Chemical Processes G. Roussy Universite de Nancy 1, France J. A. Pearce University of Texas at Austin, USA This book presents microwave and radio frequency techniques from the point of view of industrial applications, with special attention to electromagnetic energy and material interaction at the microscopic level. Starting with a review of the complete set of macroscopic governing equations--including conduction processes--it then addresses microscopic interaction effects, describing many results from spectroscopic studies. Finally, industrial applications, including the emerging new field of microwave catalysis, are addressed. The technology presented is applied in the mineral, textile, paper, ceramic, chemical and last, but not least, the food industry.

Kitchen dry fit

Kitchen dry fit

Kitchen dry fit. The cooktop is so shallow that it may not even be worth putting a drawer blank in front of it - better to just have full-height doors. The same may even be true of the sink but I'll have to test it out.

The top and bottom bars of the blind in the center here need to be trimmed on the miter saw and filed and replaced. The individual slats have been cut to size. It's not hanging quite straight here because the too-long bottom bar is in the wrong place on the magnets.

Above the middle window here lies a problem: specifically that the original cooker vent was there, but the cooker is now about 12" to the left. So I probably have to cut a new vent hole there. I intend to use the original cooker vent but I will probably repaint it first, as it's the same yucky yucky green as the formica and bathtub used.

The cooktop is small but the big burner I think puts out more heat than any of the four burners on the original stove. Good for a kettle, or using a frying pan. The stove is a little closer to the front edge than the sink, but I think it'll all look fine in the end. The original stove was also incredibly heavy because it had a gas oven - necessary for the 60s housewife, maybe? But it seems a little silly now. I plan on putting a convection/microwave oven on the other side to this - obviously, that's not usable without an outside 110V power source as it would kill a battery/inverter setup in minutes.

The countertop here has a bit of a power outlet problem - the duplex outlet in the middle is behind the cooktop and not really usable (and OH MY GOD you would not believe the pain that was involved in installing it, and now it's worse than useless and might even have to be blanked out! grrrrrrrr)

And the other wall space available is mostly behind the sink. I guess I could put a couple of outlets on the right of the big blank space behind the sink here - bearing in mind everything in here is on an GFCI breaker anyway, so it's not particularly dangerous to have an outlet near the sink - but probably I'll just put in, like, eight or um maybe sixteen outlets on the far right of the countertop. Mostly things like battery charges and laptops get plugged in - nothing that would strain a 20A circuit. And there's already a feed to there.

<pros and cons> abundance 14/52

sigh

I've tried so hard for three months now. Tried to curb our pocket money. Tried to stick to the budget when grocery shopping. Tried to get our revolving debt under control.

Then I get this phone call:
C: "You remember those appliances I said I wanted?"
Me: "Mmm... not really but okay."
C: "The elements series? The stainless steel look?"
Me: "All right?"
C: "Well, they've gone non-stock and the clearance in the system and Jason says we can have the display units. The fridge, stove, and OTR microwave."
Me: "We do need an OTR microwave."
C: "Well?"
Me: "Uhhh... how much?"
C: "Sixteen hundred."

Good reader, my jaw dropped. I didn't know how I could turn down such a good deal. These three pieces retailed at over FOUR GRAND. The refridgerator alone retailed at almost two.

And we had been casting about for an OTR microwave (ours was countertop, old, still working but took up so much space) and a new fridge (again, OLD, not so energy efficient, and on the small side). Hoping for display units that were cheap. But never could luck into something.

So, we ran up the revolving debt again (C managed to work the price down to $1200, even better!) and Sunday night I became the proud owner of three brand-spanking-new-to-me appliances. We've been yanking out old ones, cleaning the spaces, and sliding in new ones. The new oven is true convection; the new fridge has a working ice-maker and better veggie storage; the new microwave will free up space for my Cuisinart and blender.

I just hope the energy savings makes up for the new payment.

KONG Classic Kong Dog Toy, Small, Red

KONG Classic has been the gold standard of dog toys for over thirty years. Our super-bouncy, US made, natural rubber compound is perfect for typical chewers. Veterinarians and trainers recommend stuffing KONG toys with KONG treats and KONG Ziggies to keep dogs busy and deter misbehaviors. The original, stuffable treat dispensing toy!

This funny-shaped rubber chew packs a huge play value into a small-dog-sized package. Legendary among dog lovers for their strength and durability, Kong toys are the answer to a busy pet owner's prayers. Dogs were made to hunt, chase, and gnaw, and denied a way to satisfy these natural urges, they can turn into barkers, diggers, problem chewers, or worse. Recommended by vets and trainers for dogs with separation anxiety, the Kong has a hollow interior that's ideal for stuffing with treats. Use peanut butter or soft cheese like glue to keep biscuits inside, and extracting the contents becomes a "hunt" to keep any pooch happy and busy all workday long. Dogs love the toys' goofy, unpredictable bounce and can chase, fetch, and play for hours. Chewing Kongs even helps promote strong jaws, clean teeth, and general oral health.
Often imitated but never equalled, Kongs are made in the USA from a thick, flexible rubber that's non-toxic, non-splintering, and puncture-resistant enough to stand up to even the strongest jaws. This red Tuffy is appropriate for the smallest dogs, including miniature dachsunds, toy poodles, and Yorkshire terriers; size up (and/or switch to a super-durable black Kong) for aggressive chewers. Regularly inspect your Kong for cracks or missing chunks, and replace worn or damaged toys to avoid a choking hazard. Satisfaction is guaranteed; if either you or your dog aren't happy with your purchase, return within 30 days for a full refund. --Mary Park

Carrot tip. I was in the kicthen at work well one of the kitchens at work because there was some crisis heating up the Covent Garden Winter Vegetable Soup one weekend Saturday when I was working late on some job for some client and had to fly up to Edinburgh. But that's another story and no less boring than this one. Anyway long story short the microwave in the first kitchen wasn't working and so I went to the second kicthen after working out that my soup just wasn't going to get hot any time soon and then there it was. Yes a party balloon or rather half a party balloon left over I guess from some sad office Christmas party ok I know that's my interpretation and maybe the party was very funny but somehow...anyway half a balloon that wasn't doing much and I wasn't doing much either after successfully negotiating with the Samsung Microwave so there it was and there was the tap and it just seemed to be asking for some kind of statement to be made. You know. So I did this and then I liked it and then that was it, really but as they say in flickrland - here it is.

Day 91: Midnight Snack

Day 91: Midnight Snack

I actually don't do any midnight snacking. I was desperate for a shot. Clock was ticking towards midnight again, and with 2 minutes left in the day, i shoved my camera into the fridge and snapped this. lol. I actually did an inside the fridge shot for my last 365 project (the fisheye 365 one), but I ended up not finishing that project so I've decided that all of the shots from that project are fair game. I may end up reincorporating those shots/ideas into this 365 set.

On a side note, when we moved to our new house last year we got all new stainless steel appliances...except the fridge. I had my heart set on the Samsung stainless steel 28 cu. ft. French door fridge, but Jane shot down my idea since our fridge of 10 years still works perfectly. Of course she's right...but gawd I want that fridge! So now we have a kitchen with stainless steel range, microwave, dishwasher, and even sink...but with a white fridge. :)

Peep this: a homemade Ti:Sub pump

Peep this: a homemade Ti:Sub pump

A titanium-sublimation pump helps rid a vacuum system of gas once it is already brought to very low pressures (perhaps < 0.1 microTorr) by other pumping mechanisms.

One dissipates up to 300W of electrical power into a titanium filament (50A at 6V, maybe), causing the filament to slowly sputter itself onto the surrounding stainless steel vacuum walls. Fresh layers of titanium getter (remove from the volume) ambient gas atoms by chemical reaction or burial.

Yes, one can shell out money for these, but I figure I can build a bad light bulb just as well as anyone else, so instead I opted for some 2mm pure Ti rod, standard UHV mounting hardware and electrical feedthroughs.

More on the power supply later (short story: a microwave oven was sacrificed).

Bonus trivia! Why is the steel half bronze-colored and half silver-colored?

Parade of Progress Futurliner #10 at The Somernites Cruise

Parade of Progress Futurliner #10 at The Somernites Cruise

Twelve Futurliners, along with 32 support vehicles, toured the country from coast to coast in the 1940s and '50s. Each Futurliner in this Parade of Progress displayed modern advances in science and technology such as jet engines, stereophonic sound, microwave ovens, television and many other modern marvels of the time. These Futurliners were custom-built by General Motors around 1940, however WWII haulted the Parade of Progress. In 1952, General Motors refurbished the Futurliners and the Parade resumed - only to be forever discontinued after 1956, a victim to one of its featured displays: television.

This is Futurliner No.10
Only 8 other Futurliners are known to exist, 5 of which are in total disrepair.

The last time the Futurliner was in Kentucky was a stop in Louisville, KY in 1954 with the Parade of Progress. It's also interesting to note that the very first stop for the Futurliner was at the University of KY campus on April 15, 1953.

Abandoned Aleutian White Alice Site

Abandoned Aleutian White Alice Site

The White Alice Communications System operated in the Aleutians from around 1960 to the late 1970s, when it was replaced by satellite technology. We sheltered in a mouldering concrete control building next to these two 5-story microwave dishes during a storm in late June 2008. This facility, at Cape Sarichef on Unimak Island, had been battered by decades of Aleutian storms. The doors were blown off their hinges. Pools of water stood in rooms housing giant vacuum tube computers. The ventilation system clanged, shrieked and shuddered through the night. But we did find a small patch of dry concrete high in a stairwell, and slept fairly well that night. In the morning, when I took this picture, the whole facility was cloaked in blowing mist.
