Addition: A Novel
Everything counts . . .
Grace Lisa Vandenburg orders her world with numbers: how many bananas she buys, how many steps she takes to the cafE, where she chooses to sit, how many poppy seeds are in her daily piece of orange cake. Every morning she uses 100 strokes to brush her hair, 160 strokes to brush her teeth. She remembers the day she started to count, how she used numbers to organize her adolescence, her career, even the men she dated. But something went wrong. Grace used to be a teacher, but now she's surviving on disability checks. According to the parents of one of her former students, "she's mad."
Most people don't understand that numbers rule, not just the world in a macro way but their world, their own world. Their lives. They don't really understand that everything and everybody are connected by a mathematical formula. Counting is what defines us . . . the only thing that gives our lives meaning is the knowledge that eventually we all will die. That's what makes each minute important. Without the ability to count our days, our hours, our loved ones . . . there's no meaning. Our lives would have no meaning. Without counting, our lives are unexamined. Not valued. Not precious. This consciousness, this ability to rejoice when we gain something and grieve when we lose something—this is what separates us from other animals. Counting, adding, measuring, timing. It's what makes us human.
Grace's father is dead and her mother is a mystery to her. Her sister wants to sympathize but she really doesn't understand. Only Hilary, her favorite niece, connects with her. And Grace can only connect with Nikola Tesla, the turn-of-the-twentieth-century inventor whose portrait sits on her bedside table and who rescues her in her dreams. Then one day all the tables at her regular cafE are full, and as she hesitates in the doorway a stranger—Seamus Joseph O'Reilly (19 letters in his name, just like Grace's)—invites her to sit with him. Grace is not the least bit sentimental. But she understands that no matter how organized you are, how many systems you put in place, you can't plan for people. They are unpredictable and full of possibilities—like life itself, a series of maybes and what-ifs.
And suddenly, Grace may be about to lose count of the number of ways she can fall in love.

Chrysler Building
East 42nd Street, Midtown Manhattan
The Chrysler Building, a stunning statement in the Art Deco style by architect William Van Alen, embodies the romantic essence of the New York City skyscraper. Built in 1928-30 for Walter P. Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation, it was "dedicated to world commerce and industry."- The tallest building in the world when completed in 1930, it stood proudly on the New York skyline as a personal symbol of Walter Chrysler and the strength of his corporation.
History of Construction
The Chrysler Building had its beginnings in an office building project for William H. Reynolds, a real-estate developer and promoter and former New York State senator. Reynolds had acquired a long-term lease in 1921 on a parcel of property at Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street owned by the Cooper Union tor the Advancement of Science and Art. In 1927 architect William Van Alen was hired to design an office tower to be called the Reynolds Building for the site. Publicized as embodying new principles in skyscraper design,*' the projected building was to be 67 stories high rising 808 feet, and it was "to be surmounted by a glass dome, which when lighted from within, will give the effect of a great jewelled sphere."-' In October, 1928, however, the office building project and the lease on the site were taken over by Walter P. Chrysler, head of the Chrysler Corporation, who was seeking to expand his interests into the real estate field.
Walter Percy Chrysler (1875-1940), one of America's foremost automobile manufacturers, was a self-made man who worked his way up through the mechanical an; manufacturing aspects of the railroad business before joining the Buick Motor Company as works manager in 1912. Because of his success in introducing new processes and efficiencies into the automobile plant, he rose quickly through the administrative ranks of General Motors (which had absorbed Buick) before personality conflicts with William C. Durant, head of General Motors, forced Chrysler to leave. In 1921 he reorganized Willys-Overland Company, and then took over as chairman of the reorganization and management committee of the Maxwell Motor Company, eventually assuming the presidency. This enabled Chrysler to introduce in 1924 the car bearing his name which presented such innovations as four-wheel hydraulic brakes and high compression motor.
Over 50 million dollars worth of cars were sold the first year, and in 1925, the Maxwell Motor Company became the Chrysler Corporation, Dodge Brothers was acquired in 1928 giving the Chrysler Corporation additional manufacturing facilities, a famous line of cars, and putting it in a position to challenge the leadership of Ford and General Motor By 1935, when Chrysler retired from the presidency of the Chrysler Corporation to become chairman of the board, the company was second in the automobile industry ir. volume of production.
It was while Chrysler was aggressively expanding his corporation in 1928 that he took over the office building project from Reynolds. In his autobiography, Chrysler said that he had the building constructed so that his sons would have something to be responsible for. He could not have been unaware, however, that the building would become a personal symbol and further the image of the Chrysler Corporation — even though no corporate funds were used in its financing or construction. To that end Chrysler worked with architect William Van Alen to make the building a powerful and striking design.
William Van Alen (1882-1954) studied at Pratt Institute before beginning his architectural career in the office or Clarence True, a speculative builder. Severs! years later while continuing his studies at the Beaux-Arts Institute 01 Design in the atelier of Donn Barber, Van Alen entered the office of Clinton * Russell as a designer. In 1908 he won the Paris Prize of the Beaux-Arts Institute and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Atelier lLaloux. According to architect Francis S. Swales, "
His work at the Ecole indicated that the training was providing him with the mental freedom necessary to think independently, instead of merely the usual school -cargo of elements of architecture and a technique or competition by rules."0 Returning to New York in 1912 he introduced the concept of "garden11 apartments and also designed the Albemarle Building, a skyscraper without cornices. In the 1920s he became known for his innovative shop-front designs and for a series of restaurants for the Child's chain. With the Chrysler Building, Van Alen was able to apply modern principles of design to the skyscraper but at the same time created such a striking image that critic Kenneth Murchison dubbed him "the Ziegfield of his profession.
'In the 1930s he pioneered in prefabricated housing designs although they were never widely produced. Van Alen served for four years in the 1940s as director of sculpture for the Beaux-Arts Institute of

Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: Revised Edition
Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see black youth seated together in the cafeteria. Of course, it's not just the black kids sitting together-the white, Latino, Asian Pacific, and, in some regions, American Indian youth are clustered in their own groups, too. The same phenomenon can be observed in college dining halls, faculty lounges, and corporate cafeterias. What is going on here? Is this self-segregation a problem we should try to fix, or a coping strategy we should support? How can we get past our reluctance to talk about racial issues to even discuss it? And what about all the other questions we and our children have about race? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, asserts that we do not know how to talk about our racial differences: Whites are afraid of using the wrong words and being perceived as "racist" while parents of color are afraid of exposing their children to painful racial realities too soon. Using real-life examples and the latest research, Tatum presents strong evidence that straight talk about our racial identities-whatever they may be-is essential if we are serious about facilitating communication across racial and ethnic divides. We have waited far too long to begin our conversations about race. This remarkable book, infused with great wisdom and humanity, has already helped hundreds of thousands of readers figure out where to start.
Anyone who's been to a high school or college has noted how students of the same race seem to stick together. Beverly Daniel Tatum has noticed it too, and she doesn't think it's so bad. As she explains in this provocative, though not-altogether-convincing book, these students are in the process of establishing and affirming their racial identity. As Tatum sees it, blacks must secure a racial identity free of negative stereotypes. The challenge to whites, on which she expounds, is to give up the privilege that their skin color affords and to work actively to combat injustice in society.

Fire In A Bottle (247/365)
Day 247 of my 365 project.
I've had this idea for a while now, since I finished a bottle of Tabasco Sauce and decided to use it as a prop for a photo.
Initially I wanted to light a fire inside the bottle but the lack of oxygen inside made this difficult.
Instead I decided to set fire around the bottle.
I used food colouring to create a replacement for the Tabasco and then placed the bottle on some spare floor tiles.
I then used lighter fluid to set the flame.
SB600 with DIY snoot directly over the bottle, fired at 1/32 power via Yongnuo triggers.
Salvation!
Thanks to JB we figured out a system that, unlike the screwdriver idea, actually works. If you ever need to remove tile that's affixed to the ground with what can only be described as The Strongest Glue on Earth (TM) try taking an iron and a wet rag to the thing and prying the tile up with a wide paint scraper. It works surprisingly well.

Speedbumps: Flooring it Through Hollywood
At once laugh-out-loud funny and remarkably down-to-earth, the popular Oscar- nominated actress muses about movies, men, motherhood, and MS in a book that is both Hollywood hilarious and personally moving
From Speedbumps:
I was originally up for the principal female role in Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks was directing. He had just finished Blazing Saddles, and was at the top of the comedy world.
Mel had picked me out of five hundred girls, but admitted that he was still trying to convince Madeline Kahn to take the lead role. After I auditioned three times, Madeline finally did decide to take the part of the fiancee.
I was crushed. I’d never come so close to getting a major part in a major movie. But then Mel told me that if I came back the next day with a German accent I could read for the part of Inga, Gene Wilder’s buxom lab assistant.
A German accent in twenty-four hours? Luckily, I was still on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, and, as fate would have it, Cher’s wig stylist was German. So, I sat in on Cher’s hairstyling session (that gave me hours of study!) and emerged with a perfect German accent when saying, “Mein Gott, zis vig veighs forty pounds.” That would translate to the script!
There was one last thing I needed for Inga. Or two, actually. I realized Inga’s part was really all about the boobs, so the next day I went in to the audition wearing a bra stuffed with socks. People pay over five thousand dollars for a boob job today. Mine cost under five dollars at Woolworth’s, and got me the part, my biggest to date.
I was thrilled. I’d been chosen by one of the best. My career was finally in motion.
I got to thinking that I should have stuffed my bra with socks for every audition.

SOUND CONSTRUCTION
Wood works. When warm and humid, floorboards will swell. When dry and cold, floorboards will shrink. Glue down, nails, screws,.. whatever you do, in the winter there will be cracks and gaps. In the summer, the floor may warp or curl. Floating installations prevent all this provided a good quality (minimum 135 micro/m?) moisture barrier is installed and 1mm/m expansion gaps are in place. Such floors stay flat and perfect throughout various conditions.
The backdraw is the noise!
Floating floors tend to sound hollow and cheap. On ordinary colors and patterns, such cheap sound is okay but, when superior woodspecies, exquisit gradings and luxuruous floorboard measurements are involved non consistent sound is no longer acceptable. Through a 2 mm cork backing and especially through a 12 mm heavy HDF core, the sound becomes like a true classic wooden floor.
Offset
Today's challenge. The stair-and-floor guys decided to solve a problem with stair tread heights by adding the thick boards on the right. They even glued them down, which is great for preventing creaking noises, but not so good if you want to make changes.
The problem is that fairly thick oak goes over those 3/4" boards, and much thinner cork flooring goes on the concrete to the left. There is going to be quite a drop at that threshold.

RADIANT FLOOR HEATING GUIDE. HEATING GUIDE
RADIANT FLOOR HEATING GUIDE. EASY TILE FLOORING.
Radiant Floor Heating Guide
- Radiant heating is a technology for heating indoor and outdoor areas. Radiant heating consists of "radiant energy" being emitted from a heat source. Radiant heating heats a building through radiant heat, rather than other conventional methods including convection heating.
- A type of radiant heating system where the building floor contains channels or tubes through which hot fluids such as air or water are circulated. The whole floor is evenly heated. Thus, the room heats from the bottom up.
- The imparting or generation of heat
- Equipment or devices used to provide heat, esp. to a building
- heating system: utility to warm a building; "the heating system wasn't working"; "they have radiant heating"
- the process of becoming warmer; a rising temperature
- (heat) a form of energy that is transferred by a difference in temperature
- steer: direct the course; determine the direction of travelling
- A person who advises or shows the way to others
- A thing that helps someone to form an opinion or make a decision or calculation
- A professional mountain climber in charge of a group
- lead: take somebody somewhere; "We lead him to our chief"; "can you take me to the main entrance?"; "He conducted us to the palace"
- usher: someone employed to conduct others

Holy Cross Abbey Sligo (St Dominic?)
This stone carving is a 13th century friar and the halo is actually more likely to be his capuce. There are no identifying features but the liklihood is that it represents Saint Dominic.
Centuries of exposre have weathered away the features - I would imagine that the stonework was richly painted at one stage. Clearly there is no remnant of the paint after almost 800 years - it's highly unlikely that the Normans (who wore highly decorative clothes) had such plain art as some people believe.
______________________
In a valley of Old Castile, watered by the Douro, and about equidistant from Aranda and Osma, stands a simple village, called in the language of the country Calarnega, and Caleroga in the softer language of many historians. There was St. Dominic born, in the 1170 of the Christian era. After God, he owed his existence to Felix de Gusman and Jeanne d’Aza. At Calarnega this pious and noble pair possessed a residence, in which the Saint first saw the light, and part of which building is still in existence.
In 1266 Alphonso the Wise, king of Castile, in concert with his wife, sons, and leading grandees of Spain, founded a convent of Dominican nuns on the same spot. In this edifice are to be seen the apartments of more ancient date, differing in style from the rest of more ancient date, and differing in style from the rest of the building: a medi?val tower, bearing the arms of the Gusmans, a fountain named after them, and many other vestiges, designated in the traditional language of the neighborhood the Palace of the Gusmans. The chief seat of the Castilian branch of this noble house was a few miles distant; their place of sepulture, also near Calarnega, was in the Cistercian church at Gumiel d’Izan. Thither were borne, after death, Felix de Gosman and Jeanne d’Aza, and they were interred in adjoining crypts. But the veneration in which they were held became ere long the cause of their separation. About the year 1318, John Emanuel, Infanta of Spain, caused the body of Jeanne d’Aza to be removed to the Dominican Convent erected by him at Pennafied. Felix remained alone in his ancestral tomb, a faithful witness to the illustrious blood inherited by St. Dominic, and Jeanne rejoined the spiritual family of her son, that she might share in the glory he had acquired by preferring a heavenly to an earthly posterity.
A wonderful sign heralded the birth of St. Dominic. His mother dreamt that she saw her child appear under the form of a dog, holding in its jaws a lighted torch, with which he kindled the whole world. Alarmed by the obscure presage, she frequently went to pray at the tomb of St. Dominic of Silos, formerly abbot of a monastery of the same name, not far from Calarnega, and, in gratitude for the consolation vouchsafed her there, she bestowed the name of Dominic on the infant who had been the subject of so many prayers. He was the third child of this holy woman. The eldest, Antonio, dedicated his life to the service of the poor, and by his great charity adorned the priestly office to which he had been raised; the second, Mannes, died in the habit of the Order of Friar Preachers.
When Dominic was presented at the baptismal font, a new sign manifested his future greatness. His godmother, mentioned by historians merely as a lady of noble birth, beheld in a dream a radiant star on the brow of the newly baptized, the brilliancy of which seemed to remain on Dominic’s countenance; and it was remarked, as a singular fact, that a constant radiancy illumined his brow, attracting the hearts of all beholders. The white marble font in which he had been baptized, was transported to the monastery of Friar Preachers at Valladolid in 1605, by command of Philip III., who desired that his son should be baptized therein. At the present day it is at St. Dominic’s in Madrid, and many Spanish infants have there been initiated into the life that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
No stranger’s milk nourished St. Dominic; his mother would allow no blood but her own to circulate in his veins; at her breast he drank in his chaste nourishment, and from her lips he received the words of truth. In this maternal intercourse there was naught to fear, save the softness of his apparel, and those tender attentions which even the most Christian mother sometimes lavishes too freely on her child. But indwelling grace made him speedily revolt from any such yoke. As soon as he could move without assistance, he secretly left his cradle and took his rest upon the floor, as if he were already conscious of the misery of mankind, the difference of their lot her below, and was so moved with love for them that he could not endure that his couch should be better than theirs, or that, initiated in the secrets of Bethlehem, he desired a cradle like that of his Lord. We know nothing more of the first six years of his life.
Early in his seventh year he quitted the paternal roof, and was sent to his uncle, Gumiel d’Izan, arch-p

The Solution for Ants
My senior year of high school, the gazebo that my friends and I sat in became infested with ants. After talking to the vice principal and the principal whom both said there was nothing they could do about it, we decided we needed to take matters into our own hands. If we had smuggled bug spray into school before to kill our hornet problem, we could kill the ants.
As a more friendly solution to bug spray, a friend suggested we sprinkle corn meal around the gazebo (meaning, instead, corn starch). Needless to say, the ants didn't leave but it became quite the joke in our circle.

Chesterton, IN Bathroom 3
Proposal ideas for restroom to be built at Thomas Park in Chesterton, Indiana. I am showing what it would look like to have small, medium murals and / artful columns. The images do not represent the art work to be created only the idea that art can be incorporated in to the building plan. The art work can be created using glass or ceramics with or without community participation. These images are intended to help see a vision for the future in the hopes that the regional towns and cities will adopt a effort to create calls for artist to work with the locals architects to make a more artful place for all of us to live. Art doesn't have to cost the public anymore than the cost of the capital gains budgets have all ready set a side. When you think about it, bathrooms need floors, walls, sinks, and sidewalks just to name a few aspects, all of these can have art incorporated in them with out raising the cost of the building project. Creating a public art plan is easy, all you have to is start the conversation and create a plan. If you are interested in learning more about public art or the art work please contact, Deborah Landry she would love to talk to you about the possibilities.

Do you know how many people die every day from stupid things like this? I'd never actually do this- Because I know there is a greater power, someone that loves me. I have eternity in heaven, it's amazing I was talking to a friend, or at least I thought he was a friend, he was addicted to drugs, etc.. All the stupid things in life, I've tried for three-whole-years to get him to know Jesus as his addiction, I suppose Jesus himself will have to deal with him. Makes me really upset, he wants to go back to this because apparently he has been off for awhile.. I think he's a liar, but it's.. I don't know. I need to pray harder I suppose.

TUDOR FLOOR PLANS - TUDOR FLOOR
Tudor floor plans - How to lay engineered wood flooring
Tudor Floor Plans
- (floor plan) scale drawing of a horizontal section through a building at a given level; contrasts with elevation
- In architecture and building engineering, a floor plan, or floorplan, is a diagram, usually to scale, showing the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features at one level of a structure.
- (Floor planning) Floorplanning is the act of designing of a floorplan, which is a kind of bird's-eye view of a structure.
- A scale diagram of the arrangement of rooms in one story of a building

- of or relating to a style of architecture in England in the 15th century; "half-timbered Tudor houses"; "Tudor furniture"
- Of, denoting, or relating to the prevalent architectural style of the Tudor period, characterized esp. by half-timbering
- an English dynasty descended from Henry Tudor; Tudor monarchs ruled from Henry VII to Elizabeth I (from 1485 to 1603)

- A member of this dynasty
The Tudors: The Complete Story of England's Most Notorious Dynasty
BONUS: This edition contains a The Tudors discussion guide.
Acclaimed historian G. J. Meyer provides a fresh look at the fabled Tudor dynasty—and some of the most enigmatic figures ever to rule a country. In 1485, Henry Tudor, whose claim to the English throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, nevertheless sailed from France with a ragtag army to take the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four centuries. Fifty years later, his son, Henry VIII, aimed to seize even greater powers—ultimately leaving behind a brutal legacy that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. Edward VI, a fervent believer in reforming the English church, died before realizing his dream. Mary I, the disgraced daughter of Catherine of Aragon, tried and failed to reestablish the Catholic Church and produce an heir, while Elizabeth I sacrificed all chance of personal happiness in order to survive.
The Tudors presents the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, of this enthralling era.
Amazon Exclusive: G.J. Meyer on The Tudors
Why?
That question is likely to be--and probably should be--sparked by the appearance of almost any new book about the Tudors. Does the world really need more words about the dynasty that produced King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I? Those two are already the most written-about monarchs in English history, after all. They’re the subjects of so many movies, novels and TV dramas that sometimes they seem to be not figures out of the past but living showbiz celebrities. Why should anyone want to read about them yet again?
I offer two answers.
First, though the number of books about the most famous Tudors is practically infinite, single volumes dealing with the entire dynasty and aimed at a general readership have always been rare. This is unfortunate, because it deprives a great story of its proper context. The legendary career of Henry VIII would have been impossible if not for the exploits--in some ways far more astonishing--of his father Henry VII, a penniless fugitive who came almost out of nowhere to seize the crown. And Elizabeth was only the third of Henry VIII’s children to inherit his throne and struggle to deal with his blood-soaked legacy. She had a brother and sister, both of whom ruled before her and tried without success (in radically different ways) to undo what Henry had done. Her story comes fully to life only when illuminated by theirs. The Tudors ruled England for three generations--118 years in all--and not nearly enough has been done to deal with their five reigns as a continuum, a chain of causes and effects that cumulatively changed the course of English, European, and even world history, often in tragic ways.
Second, more than four centuries after the death of the last Tudor, there continues to be an immense gap between who the various members of the family actually were and what most people--including most people with some knowledge of English history--think they know about them. The real Henry VIII was both a greater and lesser man than the lusty Bluff King Hal of legend, the man who famously had six wives. Elizabeth was vastly more complicated, more pathetic and less noble than the glorious facade behind which she concealed herself. The now-obscure Henry VII, Edward VI, and Mary I were both more important as rulers and far more fascinating as human beings than is commonly understood.
The true shape of the Tudor story has been long obscured, even for leading historians, by religious controversy and differences of political ideology. It is only in the past couple of generations, as ancient passions have cooled, that the story has come into clear focus, and too often it has done so only for the historians themselves. For the public at large, the truth has continued to be overwhelmed by old legends with too little basis in fact. My hope for The Tudors, as it goes to press, is that it will help to bring popular understanding of one of history’s most deservedly famous dynasties into closer alignment with reality. --G.J. Meyer

Tudor Period Buckles, Fasteners & Coins
Tudor Period 1485 -1603 Henry VII - Elizabeth I
Buckles are not generally fixed in specific periods, in the main they evolve over centuries.
This is particularly true of the 'figure of eight' buckles pictured above. These originated in Medieval times and slowly became straighter and more squared and decorated as they progressed into the late 17th century. Some had pins, some did not, and strictly speaking the ones without pins were not buckles, but sliding length adjusters. As a good many had pins made of iron which have long since rusted away it is difficult to tell them apart. Sometimes there is a tell tale blob of rust to give them away, as on the one in the centre row.
I have added a few silver coins from Henry VIII and Elizabeth I to complete the picture.
The Tudor Village - Fitzroy Gardens Vic AU
This Tudor Village was presented to the City of Melbourne by the citizens of Lambeth, England in appreciation of gifts of food dispatched from Victoria to England during food shortages following World War 2 - 1939-45
The model buildings represent a typical Kentish village built during the "Tudor" period of English history. It is modelled in cement by Mr. Edgar Wilson, a 77 year old pensioner who lived in Hamilton Road, Norwood, London, England, who carried out the task as a hobby.

One woman holds the key to England's most glorious empire in this intimate retelling of the launch of the Tudor dynasty
A magnificent portrait of Elizabeth of York, set against the dramatic background of fifteenth century England. Elizabeth, the only living descendant of Edward IV, has the most valuable possession in all of England—a legitimate claim to the crown. Two princes battle to win Britain's most rightful heiress for a bride and her kingdom for his own. On one side is her uncle Richard, the last Plantagenet King, whom she fears is the murderer of her two brothers, the would-be kings. On the other side is Henry Tudor, the exiled knight. Can he save her from a horrifying marriage to a cut-throat soldier?
Thrust into the intrigue and drama of the War of the Roses, Elizabeth has a country within her grasp—if she can find the strength to unite a kingdom torn apart by a thirst for power. A richly drawn tale of the woman who launched one of the most dramatic dynasties England has ever seen, The Tudor Rose is a vibrant, imaginative look at the power of a queen.

Wood Flooring Diy
- Wood flooring is any product manufactured from timber that is designed for use as flooring, either structural or aesthetic. Bamboo flooring is often considered a wood floor, although it is made from a grass (bamboo) rather than a timber.

Finished Floor! (+ Kris)
Still need to paint baseboards and attach the quarter round trim, but after a few hours of work, this is what the floor looked like! It was really fun!

Floor
Erick put down the floor in our new study. The difference between the new, sanded boards and the older, varnished floor in the hallway is striking.
