Known first as Frederick Town, Winchester was the first English town west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beautiful in all seasons, it is breathtaking in spring with its apple blossoms and lacy dogwoods. Winchester is not only beautiful but also historically significant. This ancient place has been prized by everyone from the nearby Paleo and Woodland Indians to the Europeans and Americans who fought over it. At the north end of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester has stood sentinel over the rest of the valley as an important strategic center during both the French and Indian War and the Civil War. This is the town where George Washington got his military and political start and built Fort Loudoun during the French and Indian War. During the turbulent times of the Civil War, Winchester changed hands more than 70 times. Many of this city's sons and daughters, such as explorer Adm. Richard E. Byrd and country singer Patsy Cline, have achieved the world's respect. This book is filled with the story of Winchester from an early frontier town to the thriving place it is today.

Beleaguered Winchester: A Virginia Community at War, 1861-1865

During the Civil War, the strategically located town of Winchester, Virginia, suffered from the constant turmoil of military campaigning perhaps more than any other town. Occupied dozens of times by alternating Union and Confederate forces, Winchester suffered through three major battles, including some seventy smaller skirmishes. In his voluminous community study of the town over the course of four tumultuous years, Richard R. Duncan shows that in many ways Winchester's history provides a paradigm of the changing nature of the war. Indeed, Duncan reveals how the town offers a microcosm of the war: slavery collapsed, women assumed control in the absence of men, and civilians vied for authority alongside an assortment of revolving military commanders.

Caroline's Cake Shop Bristol

Caroline's Cake Shop Bristol

1962 view of Caroline's Cake Shop No.143 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol - Now Richer Sounds PLC.

Article Published in the Illustrated Bristol News 1962.

OF ALL THE BRISTOL FIRMS whose histories we have presented from time to time in this magazine, probably none has had so romantic a past, or achieved comparably as much, as Caroline’s Cake Shop Ltd.

This thriving Bristol business rose from a tiny single-fronted shop in Clifton thirty years ago, built on a legacy of ?100 and a small bank balance by Joyce Ley, to the present three modem bakeries and eight retail shops supplying Bristolians with many thousands of cakes every week of the year.

The Caroline story really started in the late 1920s when Joyce Ley, a hard-up soprano making a difficult living in London, took a last-ditch job at a small restaurant near the British Museum. She was 21 - Despite her inexperience she got a job baking cakes, and reluctantly decided to make a career in a trade more immediately rewarding than singing, even for as accomplished a soprano as she then was.

After a few months learning the trade, she got a residential job with a Sidmouth Devon concern, and when Carwardines built a new bakery in Bristol became head cake-maker there.

In the summer of 1931 came the ?100 legacy — and with this money, plus ?40 of her own savings, Joyce Ley decided to go into business for herself,

Her mother, the late Mrs. W. M. Ley - never doubted for a moment that Joyce would succeed. Together, they toured Clifton until they found, at 17 Princess Victoria Street, exactly what they wanted a single-fronted shop with rear kitchen. which they took on a three-year lease at 12s. 6d. a week.

By the time opening day arrived, Joyce Ley was down to her last few pounds. Buying equipment, ingredients and containers had shrunk her small bank balance.

Cycling up to Caroline’s Cake Shop — a name invented by her mother—at 5 a.m. on Thursday, August 31st, 1931, she felt, in her own words, like ‘someone about to plunge over a cliff to her doom’. But she set about baking her ‘morning goods’ (scones, queen cakes, rock cakes and buns) and at 9 am. she and her mother opened the front door and nervously waited for the first customer.

By noon, not one single cake was left... So Joyce started baking again. . .

And they came back, and more and more came again and again. Joyce Ley could — and did — frequently work from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and to midnight on Fridays, yet still she could not satisfy the demand for Caroline’s cakes.

And it went on like this. Her father and mother and brothers Geoffrey and John all gave up their spare time, and further help was engaged. There was only one thing for it — to open up a second shop.

They found it in a new rank at 102 Henleaze Road. It included a bakery, with larger ovens, and a cafe. Then came a further move, from 17 to 5 Princess Victoria Street, and a manageress to look after it.

Clifton and Henleaze prospered, so in 1934 Joyce Ley took a real gamble, and opened a third larger shop at 143 Whiteladies Road.

The business was by now becoming too big for Joyce to handle alone, so she persuaded her 22-year-old brother John to leave his job and go into partnership with her. It was a happy partnership, lasting until 1947, when the formation of a limited company led to Joyce’s appointment as chairman and John’s as managing director.

Male bakers were engaged — two of them, Ernest Cook and Bert Walters, are now bakery managers with the firm — and another noted addition to the staff came from Marlborough in the person of Miss Brenda Chatterton.

March, 1937, saw another shop at 1 Stoke Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, and early in 1939 the fifth shop and cafe was opened at 20/22 Gloucester Road.

With Joyce Ley herself married, and a new chief bakery manager, Mr. Charles Booy, successfully seeing out the war years, Caroline’s rested on its well earned laurels until 1960, when they vacated 66 Whiteladies Road, and crossed over to their current new shop, bakery and office block on the other side of the street.

Earlier, an ideal modern bakery was built at the rear of 5 Princess Victoria Street, and soon afterwards a new shop and bakery opened at The Triangle, Clifton. There were also more shops acquired at 35 Queen’s Road, and Alliance House, Baldwin Street.

Last year, further shops were added at 159 East Street, Bedminster, and at 717 Fishponds Road. So from the little kitchen in Clifton sprang an empire, employing 150 people and earning the respect and affection of customers all over the city of Bristol.

All in all, the Ley family have made their mark in Bristol, with eight of them at one time or another associated with Caroline’s, and John Ley and his wife ‘discovering’ and opening up The Glen for picnics and dancing, and then founding, in 1950, the Ashton Court Country Club.

A family indeed at home in a city famous for the pioneering spirit and business enterprise of its early merchant venturers.

The angle of descent

The angle of descent

This is a photo for this weeks photo assignment, themed K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid).

For one reason or another my photography has been a lttle slack recently, but I have certainly not lost any of the desire.

This is something I've seen in a magazine and wanted to try myself. I attempted it this evening under tungsten light without a flash and to be honest the colours weren't very nice. So I have adjusted it in Lightroom a little bit to give it an overexposed washed out kind of look.

This is something I'll try again in the future when I have the equipment (and/or knowhow) to avoid all of the reflections in the glasses and I'll also reduce the aperture size a little to get more crisp detail across all of the glasses. :)

The glasses were taped to a box which was then raised on the right hand side by another box. I filled all of the glasses up so that the water was at an even level then twisted the camera on the tripod so that the top of the glasses lined up with the top of the viewfinder. This created the slanted effect. I then added a few drops of food dye and quickly took a few shots.

Sunpentown Giddyup Core Exerciser, Dual Motor

Sunpentown International introduces the revolutionary exercise equipment - the Giddyup!? Core Exerciser. This equipment simulates the actions of horseback riding with its dual motions: a horizontal 8 motion and an up-and-down motion. As the equipment goes through its multiple combination of motions, the rider is constantly thrown off-balance. This requires the rider?s muscles to involuntarily contract and relax in an attempt to re-balance and stay upright. This reflex action, known as counter-balance exercise, reaches the deep postural muscles of the pelvis and muscles of the thighs, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutei. The most appealing aspect of this Counter-Balance motion is that the user is exercising without really doing anything, as there is no exertion from the user.

Small Red Barn

Small Red Barn

Shot July 10, 2006. Originally posted to Wunderground; now relocated to Flickr.
Said to be a quite old barn, but it is hard to know for certain; it does bear many old style features. Two horses are currently living in this barn. Many days recently I have seen their faces peeking out from the right side (around the corner) where there are two half doors. The right end, plus possibly the rear shed, are apparently later additions to the original structure.
This building gives a small-scale example of the two-story aspect common in this region--animals and equipment below, hay storage above. Presently, square bales of hay may be seen above. Note the interesting open-work style wall above allowing air to circulate around the hay or tobacco leaves--whatever vegetation might be stored there in season. This feature is often seen on barns in this area, and, for some reason, frequently installed at an acute angle. Probably the angle sheds water better than straight, makes for stronger construction, and it certainly is decorative.
Check my "Barns" SET.

filmset:The One - in character

filmset:The One - in character

Walking around the old Japanese district of Dalian with a photojournalist student friend who is carrying out a social documentary project on the area, we noticed something unusual. Old signs appeared to be hanging in the doorways and banners lines some of the streets. Some kind of festival perhaps ? Then we came across a huge lighting rig, of the kind that a Hollywood studio might use when shooting on location. What on earth...? We noticed an area roped off and asked some people what it was all about. "Film something something Olympics something" they replied in a heavy Dalian accent. Not only that but apparently no foreigners were allowed beyond the rope. At least not on that street. Five minutes around the corner we approached from another angle and were met enthusiastically by a young Chinese actress, eager to practice her English on two rugged bearded foreigners.

Seems a film called "The One" was getting shot. It tells the life story of China's first Olympian, a Dalian born sprinter called Liu Changchun. In a time of massive internal strife, he rejected the occupying Japanese's orders to run for the puppet state Manchukuo and instead boarded a boat from Shanghai to become the then Republic of China's sole representitive in the 1932 LA Olympics. They were filming it in this district presumably because it is one of the only relics of old Dalian yet to be re-developed. The old shop signs and crowds of extras in period robes completed the effect.

A group of people had now formed around us, questions were getting thrown around, hands were shaken, business cards given, but the rope was still there, and we were still on the wrong side for taking photos. Nothing seemed to be happening anyway, just lots of waiting around. We retreated back to the nearest restaurant and got stuck into beer and kebabs. My accomplice thought it might be an idea to phone the visiting professor on his photography course, a well respected Dutch photographer and film-maker. So he too arrived on the scene, fabled Leica in hand, just in time for the second round of lamb kebabs. After all the restaurant staff had been lined up under the bare 100 watt bulbs for head and shoulder portraits and the last of the kebabs had been eaten, off went the Prof to check out the film set for himself.

Seemingly ropes mean little when you are able to strike up a conversation with the director themselves about the merits of various kinds of lighting equipment and so after being introduced to the director as the Prof's "young proteges", we found ourselves in the unusual position of being on a full-blown film location during filming with permission to take photos as we wished.

This particular scene being shot mainly consisted of a large imposing man in Japanese military uniform getting out of an enormous black car and beating someone to the ground, as ruthless oppressors are want to do. Lots of shouting, lots of elegant Japanese looking (but actually Chinese) ladies in kimonos and parasols, and lots of smoke. The biggest laugh of the evening probably came when the car door wouldn't open and our Japanese military aggressor started cursing in Chinese.

The next day lots of research was done on-line to fill in the various information gaps. It seems the film is going to be fairly high profile, no mere local TV production. The director is Hou Yong, once time cinematographer for Zhang Yimou, who moved into directing himself more recently with family drama Jasmine Women, starring none other than Zhang Ziyi. A feelgood patriotic tale such as this will obviously pass government censors without any issues at all, and will likely be released in time for the Beijing Olympics next year. Not only that, it will be shown to all the foreign athletes. The film brings to light various questions and issues though.

Firstly, what tone will the film employ in depicting the Japanese occupation ? Will it present a heartwarming tale that embodies the "Olympic Spirit", overcoming oppression in a way that those oppressed the world over will be able to relate to, or will it be unable to resist throwing in some heavy-handed pro-China nationalistic propaganda that even the most ardent anti-fascist foreigner would cringe at watching ? Hopefully the artistic sensibilities of a respected director will prevent it from being the latter.

Secondly, how do the impoverished residents of this district feel about their homes being used in a film set ? Permission from the locals was neither asked nor given prior to the film crew setting up. How do they feel about a film about someone overcoming poverty and oppression being filmed around them while they themselves remain in the city's poor and oppressed underclass ?

Thirdly, there is the issue of how many governments, in this case the Chinese, seem to treat history. This is a government dominated by engineers and economists, where a description of a place as being "heaven on earth" often

The joys of farming in New England

The joys of farming in New England

When the crop is off the field, it's time to pull out the rocks. This is a field leased by the town for agriculture. It was originally pasture land, since the animals can eat around the rocks. However, animal agriculture has declined in the more populated areas and the fields are being converted to row crops. Since this requires plowing and cultivation, the rocks get in the way and damage equipment.

According to one of the old timers in town, there used to be people who made money "sett'lin rocks". The small rocks could be pulled out by the farmer. The medium sized rocks could be pulled out with a team of horses or oxen. For the large rocks, a hole was dug next to the rock and it was rolled in so that it was further below the surface and wouldn't give problems with the plow.

These rocks are being pulled out with a backhoe, which is currently out of service for hydraulic repairs.

Again.

I took a drive out west of Grand Forks a few weekends ago, and I was traveling a road from a different direction than I normally take. As I was going along, I saw a few buildings that are about to fall in -- and I couldn't resist.

There were some No Trespassing signs, but, I saw activity on the place just north of it, and as I pulled into the driveway, I saw this Johnny Popper sitting off to the side.

I spoke with the family -- they didn't own the land to the south, but were the lease holders and I got permission to go in and take pictures of the buildings. Good thing I stopped when I did -- they were burned two nights later.

I also asked if I could get pictures of the Deere sitting off to the side of the yard, and I got to go around it.

Just heard from the owner's son, and he's offered to take me out and show me more places and equipment. How freakin' cool is that???

Oilfield Trash: Life and Labor in the Oil Patch (Kenneth E. Montague Series in Oil and Business History)

When the first gusher blew in at Spindletop, near Beaumont, Texas, in 1901, petroleum began to supplant cotton and cattle as the economic engine of the state and region. Very soon, much of the workforce migrated from the cotton field to the oilfield, following the lure of the wealth being created by black gold.

The early decades of the twentieth century witnessed the development of an oilfield culture, as these workers defined and solidified their position within the region’s social fabric. Over time, the work force grew more professionalized, and technological change attracted a different type of laborer.

Bobby D. Weaver grew up and worked in the oil patch. Now, drawing on oral histories supplemented and confirmed by other research, he tells the colorful stories of the workers who actually brought oil wealth to Texas. Drillers, shooters, toolies, pipeliners, teamsters, roustabouts, tank builders, roughnecks . . . each of them played a role in the frenzied, hard-driving lifestyle of the boomtowns that sprouted overnight in association with each major oil discovery.

Weaver tracks the differences between company workers and contract workers. He details the work itself and the ethos that surrounds it. He highlights the similarities and differences from one field to another and traces changing aspects of the work over time. Above all, Oilfield Trash captures the unique voices of the laboring people who worked long, hard hours, often risking life and limb to keep the drilling rigs “turning to the right.”

Raleigh Brochure 1970 cover

Raleigh Brochure 1970 cover

Photo shows Raleighs highest level US import models for 1970. Tags which here suggest the racing and the touring model are misplaced in this picture: International (left) and Professional (right). Notice the very odd looking handlebar tilt. All of the bike models in this US market brochure had the handlebars tilted upward to very awkward positions. The"ramp" from the top of the bar to the brake levers was sloped more gently this way, and the bottom sections of the drop bars would have offered an angle which would have been gentle on the wrists, so this may actually be a more comfortable riding position ... BUT... they still simply look very peculiar.

I had seen this sort of bar position on pictures of some British "Club Racer" bikes of the 1950s. However, since then, the angle of the bottom of the bar on ANY bicycles had typically tilted only 10 to 15 degrees from parallel to the ground. Later Raleigh catalogue images show more familiar handlebar positions. The photos for this brochuure were taken in the US and perhaps an inexperienced local mechanic (or simply the photographer) had set up the bikes. But did no one notice this?

I had to cut the rails down to size, acid treat the metal, paint it, and cover the metal shelves with 1/4 inch oak. Then I made it all fit. The equipment, from top to bottom, is as follows: Yamaha RXV1500 Receiver (7.1 surround), a turntable I found for $5 at a garage sale, Oppo 971H DVD player, Pioneer DVR-420H (80 gig hard drive with a DVD writer too), Furman Rackrider Power Conditioner, and a Denon Powered Subwoofer my wife has not let me use for years ever since it shook her china right off the shelves. The three holes at the top are for 3 cooling fans from a computer server cabinet (throw away stuff again) that I modified to work in this cabinet.

Used for home HiFi production audio monitoring etc. Well worth a listen if you are considering a pair of cans. I have had mine since 1978 and have yet to find anything that is a great deal better at the price. The foam earpads disintegrate every few years but are available as a spare part . Safety Assessment of Wearing the AN/PVS-14 Monocular Night Vision Device (MNVD) and AN/AVS-6 Aviators' Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) During 5-Ton and HMMWV Night Driving

This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD HUMAN RESEARCH AND ENGINEERINGDIRECTORATE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A428104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Human Research and Engineering Directorate of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory conducted an assessment to provide the data and analysis of the AN/PVS-14 monocular night vision device (MNVD) and the AN/AVS-6 aviator's night vision imaging system (ANVIS) for the safety certification process. The Communications-Electronics Command Directorate for Safety Risk Management, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, will use the results of the assessment to determine the suitability of both devices for driving. The four characteristics assessed included: (a) the number and nature of training requirements for each system for night driving; (b) the time to complete and the number of errors made while drivers negotiated a hardtop driving course; (c) the time to complete and the number of errors made while drivers negotiated a cross-country driving course; (d) the number and nature of problems related to soldier performance, as well as the number and severity of safety hazards noted. The 15 soldiers who participated in the assessment drove with the AN/PVS-14, the AN/AVS-6, and the baseline system (AN/PVS-7D) in a predetermined sequence to equalize the environmental and learning effects between systems. Two different terrain driving courses were used: hardtop and cross country. The 15 soldiers were divided into two subgroups: 5-ton truck drivers and high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle drivers.

Spyderco Superleaf Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife

Spyderco Superleaf Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife

Original CLIPIT knives from the early 1980s, set side-by-side against new models, reveal a definite trend in Spyderco’s design history, the leaf-shape blade. It has emerged as a CLIPIT signature due to the blade shape which has proven it functions efficiently in nearly all cutting applications, while offering enough breadth-of-blade to accommodate the Spyderco Round Hole. Requests for a super-sized Spyderco leaf-shaped blade keep coming and in response, the new SuperLeaf fills the order with its broad VG-10 PlainEdge flat-ground blade and black G-10 handle. Located at the blade’s spine and choil is jimping (texturing) which works in conjunction with an expanded pommel on the handle, coordinating grip on the handle and dexterous control over the sharpened edge while cutting. Tucked inside the scales is a Compression Lock® locking mechanism, skeletonized full liners, a piped lanyard hole, and a secure-attachment left/right-hand, tip-up wire clip. Pretty may be an option. Sharpness and performance are not, making it a positive attribute that the SuperLeaf has both.

"Kilroy Was Here" on the WW2 Memorial

Kilroy was here is an American popular culture expression, often seen in graffiti. Its origins are open to speculation, but recognition of it and the distinctive doodle of "Kilroy" peeking over a wall is almost ubiquitous among U.S. residents who lived during World War II through the Korean War.

The same doodle also appears in other cultures, but the character peeping over the wall is not named Kilroy but Foo, i.e. Foo was here. In the United Kingdom, such graffiti are known as "chads". In Chile, the graphic is known as a "sapo" [toad]; this may refer to the character's peeping, an activity associated with frogs because of their protruding eyes.

Origins
The phrase appears to have originated through United States servicemen, who would draw the doodle and the text "Kilroy Was Here" on the walls or elsewhere they were stationed, encamped, or visited. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable notes that it was particularly associated with the Air Transport Command, at least when observed in the United Kingdom.

One theory identifies James J. Kilroy, an American shipyard inspector, as the man behind the signature. During World War II he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he claimed to have used the phrase to mark rivets he had checked. The builders, whose rivets J. J. Kilroy was counting, were paid depending on the number of rivets they put in. A riveter would make a chalk mark at the end of his or her shift to show where they had left off and the next riveter had started. Unscrupulous riveters discovered that, if they started work before the inspector arrived, they could receive extra pay by erasing the previous worker's chalk mark and chalking a mark farther back on the same seam, giving themselves credit for some of the previous riveter's work. J.J. Kilroy stopped this practice by writing "Kilroy was here" at the site of each chalk mark. At the time, ships were being sent out before they had been painted, so when sealed areas were opened for maintenance, soldiers found an unexplained name scrawled. Thousands of servicemen may have potentially seen his slogan on the outgoing ships and Kilroy's omnipresence and inscrutability sparked the legend. Afterwards, servicemen could have begun placing the slogan on different places and especially in new captured areas or landings. At some later point, the graffiti and slogan (Kilroy was here) must have merged.

The New York Times reported this as the origin in 1946, with the addition that Kilroy had marked the ships themselves as they were being built—so, at a later date, the phrase would be found chalked in places that no graffiti-artist could have reached (inside sealed hull spaces, for example), which then fed the mythical significance of the phrase—after all, if Kilroy could leave his mark there, who knew what else he could do?

Author Charles Panati says, “The mischievous face and the phrase became a national joke.” He continued to say, "The outrageousness of the graffiti was not so much what it said, but where it turned up."

Kilroy is still known and used today by US Servicemen. He has been seen scribbled on barriers on Main Supply Routes (MSRs) in Iraq and on warehouses in Taji, Iraq.

Legends
There are many legends attached to the Kilroy graffiti. One states that Adolf Hitler believed that Kilroy was some kind of American super spy because the graffiti kept turning up in secure Nazi installations, presumably having been actually brought on captured Allied military equipment. Another states that Stalin was the first to enter an outhouse especially built for the leaders at the Potsdam conference. Upon exiting, Stalin asked an aide, "Who is this Kilroy?" Another legend states that a German officer, having seen frequent "Kilroys" posted in different cities, told all of his men that if they happened to come across a "Kilroy" he wanted to question him personally. Another one states the entire gag was started by a soldier in the Army who was sick of the Air Force bragging that they were always the first on the scene; the little man and phrase then began appearing in ludicrous places to indicate that someone had, in fact, arrived prior to the Air Force.

The graffiti is supposedly located on various significant and/or difficult-to-reach places such as on the torch of the Statue of Liberty, on the Marco Polo Bridge in China, in huts in Polynesia, on a high girder on the George Washington Bridge in New York, at the peak of Mt. Everest, on the underside of the Arc de Triomphe, scribbled in the dust on the moon, in WWII pillboxes scattered around Germany, around the sewers of Paris, and, in tribute to its origin, engraved in the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C.

The Transit Company of America held a competition in 1946 offering a real trolley car to the man who could verify he was the "real Kilroy". J. J. Kilroy brought his co-workers wi

Maria the Meanie Pie

Maria the Meanie Pie

[My mother is volunteering to help people learn to read and she asked me to help by writing a story with the common sight words. This is the rough draft of my story. (And in case you're wondering, no, I don't live with my mom.)]

OK, it's the worst story ever...

Maria the Meanie Pie

Once upon a time there was a little school nestled on top of a breezy hill.

One of the students there was the meanest little girl in the world.

One was the funniest boy in the world.

The girl’s name was Maria the Meanie Pie.

The boy’s name was Hector the Laugh Inspector.

One day at recess while playing ball, Hector accidentally leapt onto the lunch table and stepped on Maria’s jelly sandwich.

Maria was so very mad.

Hector said, “I’m so sorry that I flattened your sandwich.”

“Look, don’t be mad,” he said. He poked two holes into the sandwich with his finger and jammed the sandwich into his hat in front of his face.

Hector looked through the holes and made a funny voice like a flattened sandwich. “Oh, it’s O.K. Do you know where there is a sandwich repair shop around here?”

With that, the entire school fell on their sides and laughed so hard that tears made the ground wet.

Maria stamped one foot and then the other. She knew she being ridiculed and everyone knew she was the meanest girl in the world, which made it funnier because Hector was probably in danger of some type.

Mr. Garcia, the burly school’s boilermaker, just then came out of manhole cover from underground in the middle of the school yard with a huge wrench. “That should fix that pesky water system that the school board has been complaining about.”

Just then Mr. Garcia noticed Hector with a smashed jelly sandwich face and people lying on the ground, choking for air.

“Oh, dear Lord, an alien invasion!!!” Mr. Garcia lost his grip and fell back down into the tunnel with the sound of tools banging down everywhere.

Everyone stopped laughing and gasped. Oh, no, they cried. “Mr. Garcia, Mr. Garcia, Mr. Garcia!”

Suddenly Mr. Garcia hand with red oozing over it emerged from the tunnel and began to pull Mr. Garcia out of the tunnel. Everyone’s jaw dropped. Two girls fainted.

Mr. Garcia’s face had a big flattened jelly sandwich stuck to it with two eye-holes. He looked down at his hand and licked it. “Hmmmm, tastes like strawberry jelly.”

Hector had done it again. This time the entire school could not move they were laughing so hard. Many tried crawling, but none could stand up.

Suddenly Maria’s mother, Gloria, came out from behind a bush and started laughing. She said, “Oh, Maria, be a good sport. You have not laughed in 6 months. Look I marked every day that you do not laugh on this calendar.”

“Well, I’m still mad because you lost my box full of Cupie dolls when we moved and our dog went to live with Grandma and Grandpa.” She said with arms crossed.

“I knew all this was going to happen,” Maria said. “You don’t think I have spies?” With that, Fuensanta, the smartest girl in the world, came out of the school with a video camera and a very expensive lawyer.

Fuensanta stood proudly and announced that they had all the evidence they needed and that Maria was going to sue her mother.

“You are going to make me a new sandwich with even more jelly and everyone will un-laugh this practical joke,” Maria said, standing defiantly. “And to make you cooperate with un-laughing, even though it is physically impossible, I’ve invited someone.”

Suddenly, Chale, the strongest boy in the world, stormed out of a big bush and knocked the leaves off of his clothes.

“You will now learn to un-laugh,” said Maria, making the meanest face ever in recorded history.

Hector then said, “That’s funny because I have the super-strongest boy in the world here. And everyone knows super-strong is stronger than regular strong. Here I have a list of all the super people in the world that I got from my father.”

“Nice try,” said Maria. “It doesn’t look like he showed up.”

“Galeno. Gaspar.” Hector motioned to them.

Galeno and Gaspar nodded and began pulling a giant statue on wheels out from behind a large wall. Everyone gasped when they saw it was over twenty feet tail – but then everyone started laughing when they realized the statue was very flimsy and parts started falling off of it.

“Hilarious,” Maria said sarcastically. “Is that supposed to scare me: a statue made of old, half-eaten breadsticks from school cafeteria? Please…”

“Chale,” she said, “take care of that statue!”

Everyone guarded themselves as Chale picked up an basketball and threw it as hard as he could at the statue. Breadsticks exploded everywhere as someone yelped, “Ouch!” The statue collapsed into a giant pile. Somebody had been hiding inside the statue.

“That really is the strongest boy in the world.”

Maria recognized that voice and face. “Grandpa!!!” she cried.

Her grandfather stood there holding the family dog with Cupie dolls stuffed in every possible pocket.
