Borders on brink of liquidation A collapsed deal with the Najafi investment firm means Borders now face liquidation. A deal with Borders’ designated opening bidder Najafi has fallen through because of objections by publishers and landlords. Critics of the deal, who are owed money by Borders, complained that the Najafi bid would allow the investment firm to liquidate the bookstore chain. The Najafi group originally offered USD 215 million for Borders and an assumption of USD 220 million in liabilities, but a creditors committee said an offer of USD 252 million from a liquidators’ group amounted to a better deal. It now looks more likely that Borders will be forced to close its 399 stores and lay off the 11,000 remaining staff members it employs as it goes out of business. 500 miles bike to Idaho. Sept - Oct 2007 P93270327. Photo: Biking the Bridge to Sandpoint, Idaho. A Bike tour From Portland (Troutdale) to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Eleven days of riding 530 miles (plus 40 miles of hitching). The return was made on the Empire Builder Amtrak train at Sandpoint, ID. For the tour Matt and Carye bought new custom built Bike Friday (www.bikefriday.com) folding bikes that are made in Eugene, Oregon. Neither Carye or Matt own cars, so investing in a reliable, flexible bike for travel was important. However the bikes arrived two days before leaving, so getting used to new bikes while on the road, was literally a pain in the butt! By the end of the trip, gears, seat and handle bar placement, and proper riding shoes were figured out. Everyday of the ride had awesome weather (not too hot, not rainy), and Carye and Matt met many friendly people, ate as much pizza and icecream as desired, and enjoyed some beautiful scenery (though Washington wheat fields get dull to the eyes after 20 miles). The fourth day brought bad luck - 4 flats (at once!) caused by Goathead thorns, and wind in the face most the day. Also a family of earwigs hitched a ride in C & M's camping gear, and it took about a week to finally see the last one. Idaho is a cyclist paradise (what a secret). From The State Border near Coere D'Alene to just before Bonner's Ferry, there were many bike paths, nice scenery, and most flat routes. Day 1:Troutdale to Hood River (55.6 miles) Highlights: Gorgeous Columbia River (Get the bike map from ODOT). Ride to Council Crest, Ride by Falls, bike-ped paths on the old historic highway. The campground listed on the bike map for Hood River was not there. We decided to treat ourselves and stayed at the Hood River downtown hotel. Hood River is a super nice town - though sad the Carousel Art Museum is closed and moving elsewhere. Also on this route, between Cascade Locks and Wyeth, do not take the Wyeth Bench Rd (aka Herman Creek Rd), it is a horrible grade hill, and you are better off taking the I-84. Note about I-84, it's not the most pleasant experience, but it's not bad, In order to bike to Hood River, you will need to get on I-84 at several points - The shoulder is pretty wide at most places, and it's a good idea to wear some bright orange! Day 2: Hood River to Maryhill, WA (52.5 miles) Highlights: The old historic highway section is really neat: it goes through the Mosier Tunnels (now just for ped/bike), The section through Mosier town, and to Rowena's Crest was on low traffic streets. No need to get on I-84 at all all the way to the Dalles. The crossing over to Washington on the bridge in the Dalles was difficult. It was so windy and the sidewalk so narrow we had to walk. Biking to hwy 14 across the wind was also difficult. But once on hwy 14 heading East, the wind was at our bikes, and we cruised past the Maryhill Museum (Too late in the day to stop!) and stayed at the Maryhill State Park (back down by the river). Day 3: Maryhill to Crow Butte (58.2 miles) Highlights: Cruising sometimes 20 miles an hour easily with the wind at our back on Hwy 14. Lovely more deserty scenery, waving to trains. A Stop at Stonehenge. From the campground, we hitched a ride in a pickup back up the top of the hill to hwy 14. The road was a major truck route, and the shoulder was pretty much missing for the first section of the hill, we decided htiching was the safest option. We enjoyed stopping at America's Stonehenge. I had been there before, but never thought I'd bike all the way! Crow Butte park was father than we thought. We could see it, but then had to ride about 4 miles all the way around and out to it. The RV park was expensive, and did not offer "primitive camper" sites. Day 4: Crow Butte, WA to Hat Rock Park, OR Highlights: Early morning hike past deer to the top of Crow Butte. Discovering the way over the I-82 - there is a bike route, but you need to go on the may freeway before the bike route appears, then you exit, cross under and go over on the otherside. Umatilla was nice little town to check out. At first we were excited about the Lewis & Clark Bike/Ped Bath, but it turned into a bad situation. The wind in the gorge changed from E to W today, so we had to push hard for 20 miles, going about 5-8 miles an hour. Very hard reality after the day before. The road moved away from the Gorge and was now less interesting. Onion (Walla Walla) trucks passed us all day, leaving onion skin trails. We crossed back to Oregon, and instead of the main road decided to follow the Lewis & Clark trail to Hat Rock State Park. Unfortunately it turned into a bad idea. The path was badly marked and kept changing from paved to shared road, to bark-dirt to gravel. After a gravel section we discovered that we had rode through thorns and had 4 flats at once. We pulled out 15-30 thorns and only had two new tubes, One tube needed to be patched 7 times. We were able to ride out to the main road and hitched a ride with a pries 500 miles bike to Idaho. MyWeek 07 23 2008 After years of cobbling together design work with an underpowered computer and outdated, often unlicensed software, my employer finally invested in some professional equipment for me this week. This Mac Pro computer will be running Adobe's CS3 software. The last few years I've had to be very resourceful to get the results I wanted from the tools I was using. I feel like I picked up a lot of useful skills that way but ultimately the projects took longer than they needed to and the end results were alwaya a little (or a lot) less polished than I thought they could or should be. I had very little formal training in this line of work and I still have so much to learn. But I feel like I know enough to be dangerous now and I'm anxious to see the work I can produce with some precision instruments in my hands. Blizzard doin' Butte Blizzard the Komondor on his way to NYC via Butte, Montana. Some notes on Butte from wikipedia: Today, Butte's population is about a third of its peak in 1917, when it was the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. Since about 1960, the city's population has been about 30,000, despite periodic rises and drops. Over a dozen of the headframes still stand over the mine shafts, and the city still contains thousands of historic commercial and residential buildings from the boom times, which, especially in the Uptown section, give it a very old-fashioned appearance like a ghost town, with the many buildings and comparatively few people. As with many industrial cities, tourism and services, especially health care, are rising as primary employers. Many areas of the city, especially the areas near the old mines, show signs of wear from time but a recent influx of investors and an aggressive campaign to remedy blight has led to a renewed interest in restoring property in Uptown Butte's historic district, which was expanded in 2006 to include parts of Anaconda and is now the largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States with nearly 6,000 contributing properties. A century after the era of intensive mining and smelting, the area around the city remains an environmental issue. Heavy metals such as lead and arsenic are found in high concentrations in some spots affected by old mining, and for a period of time in the 1990s the tap water was unsafe to drink due to poor filtration and decades-old wooden supply pipes. Efforts to improve the water supply have taken place in the past few years, with millions of dollars being invested to upgrade water lines and repair infrastructure. Environmental research and clean-up efforts have contributed to the diversification of the local economy, and signs of vitality remain, including a multi-million dollar polysilicon manufacturing plant locating nearby in the 1990s and the city's recognition and designation in the late 1990s as an All-American City and also as one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2002. In 2004, Butte received another economic boost as well as international recognition as the location for the Hollywood film Don't Come Knocking, directed by renowned director Wim Wenders and released throughout the world in 2006. inebrated Tanduay has over a hundred and fifty years of history. It all began in 1854 when Don Joaquin Elizalde, together with his uncle, Juan Bautista Yrissary, and the Manila-based Spanish businessman and financier Joaquin Ynchausti established a trading partnership, which acquired the Manila Steamship Company. This alliance was named the Ynchausti Y Cia. Their main line of business was ship chandlery and later on ventured into abaca making. The steamships they owned plied the Laguna Lake to Manila route. Later, Valentin Teus, a cousin of the Elizaldes, joined the partnership. Teus acquired a distillery in Hagonoy, Bulacan from Elias Menchatorre and merged it with Ynchausti Y Cia. Six years later, a rectifying plant of this distillery was constructed in San Miguel District, Manila. This small distillery was transformed by four successive generations of the Elizaldes into the modern Tanduay Distillery, considered one of the largest in the Philippines. The Elizalde Family invested and developed agricultural properties in Western Visayas, particularly in Panay and Negros Occidental, wherein they grew sugar cane. These plantations became a vital necessity in the production of sugar, the most important raw material in making rhum. Ynchausti Y Cia used the steamboats to transfer the raw materials to the Tanduay compound where they produced rhum. In 1893, Don Joaquin Elizalde became the majority stockholder in Ynchausti Y Cia, and the company was renamed Elizalde & Co. Inc. This paved the way for further diversification of its business interests. Slowly but surely, Tanduay was transformed into a successful industry, producing quality rhum and other distilled spirits for both the domestic and international markets. In May 10, 1988, Twin Ace Holdings Corporation, owned and managed by the Lucio Tan Group of Companies (L.T.G.C.), acquired Tanduay Distillery from the Elizalde Family. The new management launched a plant modernization and expansion program that increased the distillery's production capacity by almost 50 times. Pressure Compensation Device DA 084 has becomemore andmore important to provide a protected enclosure environment for valuable and crucial electrical and electronic components. In a tightly closed enclosure, pressure differentials can occur during extreme temperature variations, such as day/night operation. When this occurs, the risk of dust and humidity being absorbed into the control panel increases dramatically. The specially designed pressure compensation device DA 084 permits a controlled change in pressure. It can be installed easily in any enclosure. The pressure compensation device is suitable for the use in enclosures and switch cabinets in accordance with DIN EN 62208. Energy Security Act conference staff, 1980 This was the big energy legislation of Carter's last year -- the one that was supposed to create a synthetic fuels industry. The conference staff met in the House Legislative Counsel's office for months, often going well past midnight. I don't remember everyone, but that's Richard Grundy (Senate Energy Committee) leaning over, Majority Leader Wright's guy, then Norm Cornish of House Banking and Chuck Trabandt (aka "the Prince of Darkness") and Dave Swanson, GOP staff for the Senate Energy Committee. I was the Senate Banking Committee's staffer on the conference -- and the only one who brought a camera to any of the meetings. As I recall, it was well after midnight and we were discussing when we'd resume the next day. Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, 1980 A long way from its native Bristol and way passed its prime, former Bristol Omnibus Company, ECW/Bristol FLF, JAE630D, passes the old Scunthorpe United FC's football ground in Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe in 1980. JAE630D, only had a very short career with Bristol Omnibus, passing to the West Riding Automobile Company Ltd in November 1969. In 1978, and under National Bus Company ownership, the bus was transferred the Lincolnshire Road Car in the April of that year. Numbered 2715 in the LRCC fleet, the bus was finally withdrawn from passenger service in 1981/2. After passing to a dealer, JAE630D was exported to Halifax Double Decker Tours, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1983. In 1996, the bus was again sold on, but this time it was converted into a mobile fish and chip shop. By the end of 1997, it had fallen out of use, and was last reported in 2000, as being in a derelict condition in Nova Scotia, Canada. The ‘Old Showground’ Football Stadium Scunthorpe United, formerly known as Scunthorpe and Lindsey United, among other names, has existed since 1899, but did not join the Football League until 1950 when the league structure was expanded. Their first game was against fellow new entrants Shrewsbury Town. When it became apparent that the Old Showground needed significant investment to maintain its fabric and to make it comply with new regulations introduced in the wake of the Bradford Fire Disaster, the ground was sold. Funded by the sale of the old football ground, Scunthorpe United FC moved to a purpose built stadium at Glanford Park, Scunthorpe in 1988, the first English football club to move to a purpose built stadium in nearly 30-years. Following the move, the site of the former Old Showground stadium was re-developed into a supermarket, which is now owned by J. Sainsbury’s. Some facts about the Old Showground Stadium: It was the first football ground in England to have a cantilever grandstand, which was constructed in 1958, four years before Sheffield Wednesday's at Hillsborough. The Ground Capacity was 25,000. The record crowd was 23,935 when Scunthorpe played Portsmouth in the FA Cup Fourth Round on 30th January 1954. The last match played at the ground was against Torquay United on Wednesday 18th May 1988.
