Sarasota Sunset

Sarasota Sunset

This is a vacation beach sunset photo. Since we were flying from Buffalo to Florida, I had to travel light. I wanted an off camera key light, but didn't want to pack a light stand. What I did was bring a Kacey Pole Adapter and an umbrella swivel in my luggage. When in Florida, I stopped at a hardware store and bought a threaded broom handle which I could stick in the sand. Essentially a disposable $5 light stand. There was a $3 broom handle, but it was shorter than I liked, so I splurged and bought the $5 one.

Painting with Fire in the Dark

Painting with Fire in the Dark

For this shot I have used:
----- Canon 50D DSLR (in bulb mode)
----- Canon 18-200 lens;
----- wireless remote trigger;
----- tripod;
----- cigarette lighter;

I took this photo a while ago and thought it could become a source of creative inspiration for some of you guys. Painting with light in complete darkness could be a fun way to spend the Earth Hour today, Saturday March 26 (from 8:30-9:30 PM), when presumably all of us will be turning off the lights in our houses.
I'm sure you can do better than I did with a bit more perseverance and nobody around, including your partner ... ha ha (he/she might get the wrong impression if he/she catches you running in circles with your light or waving it in complete darkness :-). You want to avoid that, OK?

I'm just about to reveal the top secret recipe for painting with light in the dark. Nobody knows this technique besides me and half of the people on the planet LOL (make sure you don't tell the secret to your friend, who belongs to the other half :-) ... you want to impress him or her with your cool creation.

Here you go: set up your camera on a tripod or on a steady surface. Switch the camera to manual mode "M", set it on long exposure (point and shoot cameras generally allow a maximum of 15 seconds exposure, while DSLRs double that). Set the timer on your camera to 5 or 10 seconds. Turn off the lights in your house (it is already 8:30 PM and the Earth Hour has just started). OK ... you may leave a tiny ambient flash light or candle on (much further away) to avoid banging your head against something in the dark and blaming me afterwards. Assuming that you already have a composition, use a flash light to illuminate it and half-press the shutter button to focus on it (smart). Turn your flashlight off and fire the shutter button. Right after the timer stops beeping, you are allowed to go nuts :-))) ... use a tiny flashlight, a small led light or maybe a cigarette lighter (like I did) to paint over your composition in a more or less controlled manner. Remember: you only have between 15 and 30 seconds to express your talent, while the camera's shutter remains open. You can chose to paint a basket full of fruits with your light for instance. You could draw a heart for your lover and sign your name underneath or write "Earth Hour" and submit it to flickr ASAP.
It takes a bit of practice to write imaginary text in space (you can write the normal way and reverse it in Photoshop after).
Now here's the bad news: 15 or 30 seconds won't do a lot of justice to your creative composition. For best results you should set your DSLR in bulb mode and get yourself a wireless remote trigger which allows you to stop the shot once your creation is done.

Have fun and give me a shout if you come up with a cool creation.

© Billy Wilson 2010

A selfportrait of my upper body, influenced by the stress I am having in school.

About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ?/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ?/8.0 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup, a remote switch, and a 2 sec. selftimer.

I cross lit this image, to the right of the camera and infront of me I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at 1/4 power at 105mm being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella with the umbrella choked up right to the flash, the flash was also pointed to the edge of the umbrella, I also slightly feathured by not pointing this directly at me. To the left of the camera and slightly behind me I had a Vivitar flash at full power around 5.5 feet away pointed directly at me. The Speedlite was triggered with a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter.

I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved it as a TIFF. I dodged and burned on luminousity layers to add contrast. I also increased the mid-tone contrast. At the end of the editing I saved the TIFF, converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

Please press "L" on your keyboard to see the image on black.

I bought a Microsoft Wireless Media Desktop 1000 mouse/keyboard combo, which share a single receiver. It plugs into the rear USB port, so I don't have to use one of the front ports.

So far, I've gotten all the Windows Updates, installed AVG, Firefox and TweakUI, and it runs pretty smooth. It's main job is for browsing the web, which it does just fine.

The one issue I've found is that the tiny case gets extremely hot over time, but it's no worse than a lot of laptops.

  • A wireless local area network protocol which allows high speed access to network resources.  It operates at 11, 5.5, 2 and 1 megabits per second depending on distance.  It uses the 2.4 ghz spectrum using direct sequence spectrum (DSS)..

  • A misnomer in actuality since "Ethernet" is a wired system by definition, but appropriate nevertheless to describe CSMA/CA wireless LAN s&emdash;since their operation has a great deal in common and they are typically integrated easily.

Speakers - Dali Concept Series
Fantastic speakers. Sharp and clear high notes with powerful midrange tones and bass. Concept 6 (two 6.5 inch drivers and 1 inch tweeter) make outstanding fronts, with Concept 1 (5 inch driver and 1 inch tweeter) for rears and accompanying Concept Center (two 5 inch drivers and 1 inch tweeter). Frequency's ranging from a low 40hz right up to 25,000Hz.

Jamo Sub200 Subwoofer
Concept Sub (10 inch, 150w) is a bit overpowering for my size of room. The Jamo sub200 is a small, responsive downward ported and downward firing 8 inch driver with a long-throw voice-coil and a 150w amplifier. Boosts low end frequencies down to 40Hz.

Sony Bravia KDL40EX500
Outstanding 40" LCD with 1920x1080p resolution, 150000:1 contrast ratio, 8ms response time, and 100Hz motion technology. Plays DivX and AVCHD through USB. Really nicely designed as well, even if it is a little on the thick side. With the old Samsung I had connected to my MacBook Pro via DVI to HDMI, the display would be either too big or too small for the TV. This problem doesn't occur with the Sony - the screen is 100% filled.

Onkyo TXSR-607 AV Reciever
Six HDMI inputs (one on front) and 1080i upscaling for composite and component inputs with a de-interlacing engine. 90w per channel outputs for Front, Front Height, Center, Surround, and Surround Rear, with two subwoofer pre-outs. DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

Apple Airport Express and iPod Dock
Airport Express allows you to wirelessly stream audio from any computer with iTunes. This also brings a wired ethernet connection in to be routed at 300MB/s (802.11n). Connected to the amplifier via a digital optical audio connection, passing through the digital signal to the 192kHz/24bit DAC of the amplifier rather than decoding itself.

The iPod dock is connected to the amplifier via component, being upscaled to 1080i, allowing the iPod to charge, play music, and the iPod Touch to stream video from youtube.

Panasonic BD60 BluRay Player
SD Card slot for AVCHD playback. All the usual outputs.

Sony Debuts LocationFree Devices

Sony Debuts LocationFree Devices

Continuing the trend to provide consumers with their TV and video outside of the living room, Sony Electronics unveiled three devices that it said can deliver content wherever a broadband Internet connection is available.

Starting in October, two new Sony LocationFree base stations and LocationFree TV box will allow consumers to wirelessly stream TV programs, movies and personal video content to devices including a Sony PlayStation Portable game device, PC or television set outside the home.

Priced at $200 and $250, the two base stations can forward TV and stored video content from a home-entertainment center over a broadband Internet connection of at least 300 kilobits per second to any TV in a remote location. The $250 LF-B20 base station can also wirelessly connect to any remote home network.

The portable $230 LocationFree TV Box, meanwhile, plugs into any remote TV and communicates with the base stations in the customer home, allowing customers to tap into their home digital-media files and display video on a TV wherever they are.

The products provide access to video similar to that of Sling Media’s Slingbox. That system uses an Internet-connected box on a home TV to deliver live TV or stored video to a remote computer.

This is where all the action happens. I mainly write, and of course listening to beautiful music comes along with that, but I also do photo and video editing, web page designing (I only dabble in it for fun), movie watching, gaming (only a trickle), article reading, communicating-- just about everything that goes on in the Jordan Spencer Digital Universe happens at this desk.

Product Description

The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition is the only book on the market written by the creators of the GMAT exam. Inside you’ll find more than 800 actual GMAT questions from previous tests with answers and detailed explanations. There’s also a grammar review, math review, actual essay topics, sample responses, and scoring information insights into the GMAT exam that debunk test-taking myths. Plus, use the diagnostic section to pinpoint your skill level and focus on the areas where you need the most help.
Top Myths About the GMAT®

Myth – If I don’t score in the 90th percentile, I won’t get into any school I choose.
Fact – Very few people get very high scores.
Fewer than 50 of the more than 200,000 people taking the GMAT test each year get a perfect score of 800. Thus, while you may be exceptionally capable, the odds are against your achieving a perfect score. Also, the GMAT test is just one piece of your application packet. Admissions officers use GMAT scores in conjunction with undergraduate records, application essays, interviews, letters of recommendation, and other information when deciding whom to accept into their programs.
Myth – Getting an easier question means I answered the last one wrong.
Fact – Getting an easier question does not necessarily mean you got the previous question wrong.
To ensure that everyone receives the same content, the test selects a specific number of questions of each type. The test may call for your next question to be a relatively hard problem-solving item involving arithmetic operations. But, if there are no more relatively difficult problem-solving items involving arithmetic, you might be given an easier item.
Most people are not skilled at estimating item difficulty, so don’t worry when taking the test or waste valuable time trying to determine the difficulty of the questions you are answering.
Myth – You need very advanced math skills to get a high GMAT score.
Fact – The math skills questions on the GMAT test are quite basic.
The GMAT test only requires basic quantitative analytic skills. You should review the math skills (algebra, geometry, basic arithmetic) presented in both The Official Guide for GMAT® Quantitative Review, 2nd Edition, and in The Official Guide for GMAT® Review, 12th Edition, but the required skill level is low. The difficulty of GMAT Quantitative questions stems from the logic and analysis used to solve the problems and not the underlying math skills.
Myth – It is more important to respond correctly to the test questions than it is to finish the test.
Fact – There is a severe penalty for not completing the GMAT test.
If you are stumped by a question, give it your best guess and move on. If you guess incorrectly, the computer program will likely give you an easier question, which you are likely to answer correctly, and the computer will rapidly return to giving you questions matched to your ability. If you don’t finish the test, your score will be reduced greatly. Failing to answer five verbal questions, for example, could reduce your score from the 91st percentile to the 77th percentile. Pacing is important.
Myth –The first 10 questions are critical and you should invest the most time on those.
Fact – All questions count.
It is true that the computer-adaptive testing algorithm uses the first 10 questions to obtain an initial estimate of your ability; however, that is only an initial estimate. As you continue to answer questions, the algorithm self-corrects by computing an updated estimate on the basis of all the questions you have answered, and then administers items that are closely matched to this new estimate of your ability. Your final score is based on all your responses and considers the difficulty of all the questions you answered. Taking additional time on the first 10 questions will not game the system and can hurt your ability to finish the test.
Myth – I need to speak US English in order to do well on the GMAT.
Fact- Essay grading is not affected by dialect of English. Questions on the GMAT are evaluated to ensure they are fair for all examinees, whether in the US or around the world.

Router and UPS

Router and UPS

Thanks to the constant power outages here, I decided that my router needed a UPS power backup. This is not so much so I can be online during power outages as so the router doesn't get damaged (hasn't happened yet) or lose its entire configuration (many times).

For reasons I won't go into, the router lives in a plastic box on our chimney. I just crammed the UPS into the box which was already there. Will it freeze in the winter? Maybe, but the power will always be on, so I hope that will provide enough warmth. Will it burn up in the summer? Maybe, but the router has lasted several years up there, so maybe the UPS will too.

In other news, I'm trying to get a call back from our (only) local cellular provider about a cellular broadband solution to replace this. So far, none of the local options seem willing to take my money.

Router Table 2

Router Table 2

The main table section of the router table is completed. It's dead flat and structurally sound. I hope all the extra weight from using 3/4" plywood will take away some of the router's vibration and noise. The table is 36" long and 47.5" wide. It was the biggest table I could make using a single piece of 4x8 plywood. Hopefully the size will help when I have to "joint" larger pieces for a table top I've got planned.

From a distance it looks like a router table from IKEA, if they made that sort of thing.
