Beautiful stage and film actress Margaret Lockwood (1916-1990) was the female lead of the early Hitchcock classic The Lady Vanishes. In the 1940’s she became Britain's leading box-office star specializing in beautiful but diabolical adventuresses.

Margaret Mary Lockwood Day was born in 1916 in Karachi, British India (now Karachi, Pakistan), to a English administrator of a railway company and his Scottish wife. Lockwood's family returned to the United Kingdom while she was a child, aged 3. She began studying for the stage at an early age under Italia Conti, and made her debut in 1928, at the age of 12, at the Holborn Empire, where she played a fairy in A Midsummer Night's Dream. In December of the following year, she appeared at the Scala Theatre in the pantomime The Babes in the Wood. In 1932, she appeared at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in Cavalcade. In 1933, she enrolled at the RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), where she was seen in Leontine Sagan's production of Hannele by a leading London agent, Herbert de Leon, who at once signed her as a client and arranged a screen test. Director Basil Dean was impressed and gave her the second lead in his film Lorna Doone (1934) when Dorothy Hyson fell ill. She was billed with her stage name Margie Day.Seven ingenue screen roles followed in ‘quota quickies’ like Someday (1935, Michael Powell) and Midshipman Easy (1935, Carol Reed). Then she played opposite Maurice Chevalier in the remake of the musical The Beloved Vagabond (1936, Curtis Bernhardt). A year later, she married Rupert Leon, a man of whom her domineering mother disapproved strongly, so much so that for six months Margaret did not live with her husband and was afraid to tell her mother that the marriage had taken place.

In 1938, Margaret Lockwood's role as a young London nurse in Bank Holiday (1938, Carol Reed), established her as a star, and her next film would give her even international status. The Lady Vanishes (1938, Alfred Hitchcock) offered her a role with teeth. She starred as a rich young playgirl about a mysteriously disappearing old woman. In this glorious comic thriller she co-starred with Michael Redgrave and there was considerable chemistry between the two stars. Hitchcock guides them with never a misstep through a complex script that progresses from very lighthearted to extremely sinister and then back again, and the result leaves audiences with both the satisfaction of a well-made thriller and the glow of a romantic comedy. The Gainsborough studio production would be Lockwood’s most successful film of that decade. A visit to Hollywood to appear with Shirley Temple in Susannah of the Mounties (1939, Walter Lang, William A. Seiter) and with Douglas Fairbanks Jr in Rulers of the Sea (1939, Frank Lloyd) was not at all to her liking. She returned with relief to Britain to star in two of Carol Reed's best films, The Stars Look Down (1940), as the self-centred, frivolous wife of Michael Redgrave's character, and the Oscar nominated spy thriller Night Train to Munich (1940), opposite Rex Harrison. In 1941, she gave birth to a daughter by Leon, Julia Lockwood, affectionately known to her mother as ‘Toots’, who was also to become a successful actress. The Leons separated soon after her birth and were divorced in 1950. Lockwood gained custody of her daughter, but not before Mrs Lockwood had sided with her son-in-law to allege that Margaret was ‘an unfit mother’.

In the early 1940’s, Margaret Lockwood changed her on-screen image. The turning point in her career came in 1943, when she was cast opposite James Mason in the Gainsborough melodrama The Man in Grey (1943, Leslie Arliss). She played an amoral schemer who steals the husband of her best friend, played by Phyllis Calvert, and then ruthlessly murders her. Spectral in black, with her dark, dramatic looks, cold but beautiful eyes, and vividly overpainted thin lips, Lockwood was queen among villainesses. The film inaugurated a series of hothouse melodramas that came to be known as Gainsborough Gothic and had film fans queueing outside cinemas all over Britain. . Her greatest success was in the title role of The Wicked Lady (1945, Leslie Arliss), again opposite Mason. In thuis outrageous adventure film she played the ultimate in murderous husband-stealers, Lady Skelton, who amuses herself at night with highway robbery. The amount of cleavage exposed by Lockwood's Restoration gowns caused consternation to the film censors, and apprehension was in the air before the premiere, attended by Queen Mary, who astounded everyone by thoroughly enjoying it. In 1946 Lockwood gained the Daily Mail First Prize for most popular British film actress.

After poisoning several husbands in Bedelia (1946, Lance Comfort), Margaret Lockwood became less wicked in Hungry Hill (1947, Brian Desmond Hurst), Jassy (1947, Bernard Knowles), and The White Unicorn (1947, Bernard Knowles),

Harry Peckman

HARRY PECKMAN, THE BLUE MOUNTAINS POET (1846-1934)

Harry Peckman was a true ‘Blue Mountaineer’. Born at Kurrajong in 1846, he lived the whole of his life in the Blue Mountains region and died in Katoomba in 1934. As a young man, in the days before the western railway line was built, he drove wagons and coaches on the road between Penrith and Hartley. Then, when the Mountains developed its reputation as a tourist destination, he began taking visitors to the local scenic attractions.

In the early 1880s he and his brother, John, established livery stables in Parke Street, Katoomba, at the back of the Carrington Hotel. Their business flourished. Both men were expert horsemen and knew the Blue Mountains intimately and their patrons soon included a growing number of holidaying dignitaries and their families. In 1887 Lord and Lady Carrington were taken over the newly opened Six-Foot Track to Jenolan Caves1 while, in 1893 the Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos was entertained with a billy tea and damper picnic at Govetts Leap2.

But knowledge of horses and the bush were not the only skills Harry possessed. To the many visitors who engaged him he became known as ‘the poetical whip’ who would take them to places off the beaten track and entertain them en route with selections from his repertoire of mostly self-penned songs and recitations. As more than one observer commented, his verses, performed in the midst of a grand, open landscape, provided visitors with a glimpse into the heart of the Mountains that no other driver could offer.

While no one could claim that Peckman was a great poet, it is clear that his skills as a performer made up for any deficiencies in craft. “No free verse for this poet”, observed cartoonist and journalist Hal Eyre in 1922, “but rhymes tuned to the beat of his horses’ hoofs.”3 His subjects ranged over the Blue Mountains itself and included dramatic and patriotic war ballads and heart-felt ‘farewells’ to friends who had died. There were also tributes to popular heroes like the sculler Edward Trickett, the first Australian to win a world sporting title, and the popular aviatrix Amy Johnson who visited Katoomba in 1930.

Like many self-educated men, Peckman was clearly a wide reader and his verses are dotted with various literary and Biblical allusions. He was also acquainted with a number of Sydney literary figures who sought him out when they visited Katoomba, among them the poets Roderick Quinn and Henry Lawson.

Though he performed for the gentry his audience was in the main a popular one and his work, when published, appeared almost exclusively on privately printed broadsides and later, when a newspaper became established in Katoomba, in the local press.

It seems that he was performing his songs and poems and peddling his broadsides from the time he worked as a young labourer and coach driver in the Hartley area in the 1860s and 1870s. In some of his reminiscences, recorded by local journalists, he mentioned the lively sessions of song and recitation he participated in at this time, particularly at ‘Kelly’s in the Glen’ halfway to Jenolan Caves.

Some of his work attained for him what is possibly the highest accolade a popular audience can bestow, a passage into the anonymous oral or ‘folk’ tradition that carried it to places far removed from the Blue Mountains.

Towards the end of his life Harry Peckman experienced hard times and, though visitors still often sought him out even in the late 1920s, he watched as the age of the motor car gradually rendered his coach and pair obsolete. At the time of his death he had become something of an icon, a symbol of a past era. On a slow news day the local journalists would seek him out and trawl his still alert mind for reminiscences of the ‘old days’.

For his 88th birthday, in August 1934, his friends organised a party. He performed his poems for the last time and, some seven weeks later, died. His grave in Katoomba Cemetery looks out over the tributaries of the Grose River that flow into what he once described as “the Hawkesb’ry silver Rhine”.

His name is publicly remembered in Peckmans Plateau and Peckmans Road, both in Katoomba.

Note: In 1993, nearly 60 years after his death, a small biography and collection of Peckman’s surviving poems and songs, The Prince of Whips: The Life and Works of the Blue Mountains Pioneer Harry Peckman, Jim Smith and John Low, was published. Evolving Visual Capture - digital devices

Late Digital Technology. This is the evolution of digital visual capturing, where the camera has become a part of a simplified device, either a camera or cell phone or music player. Some level of acceptance which has led to it becoming so ubiquitous and commonplace that it is less about the action of taking a photograph and more about the action of sharing the photograph. The last of the products is the computer interface, in this case: Flickr.

These images lack several important considerations of the original inspiration. One is the background. People I have shown it to would like to see the background of the place the camera is most likely to be used. Another is the display. How will the photograph be shared? THe inspirational photo includes a projects, so it is from slide to share. For these ones a method of display should be used, such as a photo frame, a newspaper, a cd or hard drive, and finally the internet. There should also be something about polaroids int there, but I lack a proper camera and examples of polaroids for the project.

Pops (digital scrapbook layout)

My father always called my grandfather Pop, which became the inspiration for the title of this page: Pops. I took these photos of them separately but when I printed them and looked at them side by side, I realized just how much my dad and grandad look alike!

I made these faux bone beads and focal from polymer clay. I combined them with chunky chalk turquoise gemstones, and linked them with non tarnish artistic copper wire. A Bali style clasp closes the necklace.

The lenght is approx 19.5inch (51cm).

Thinking about Film & Digital, and Which Should Come First, and Does It Matter

Okay, so here's a question (as I'm not working until tonight, and so have some time to sit here in front of the computer, commanding the internet to entertain me):

Is it better for new photographers to use digital or film? Does it make a difference?

Been giving digital & film a lot of thought lately, obviously, and the other day I was talking it over with a friend who's not a photographer, explaining to him the differences, the different challenges and limitations of both.

I'm of the opinion, and this is of course colored by my own experience, that film is better for new folk, that it's the specific limitations of film that help a budding photographer prioritize, and through that, begin to carve out a style.

Having to decide what shots you just HAVE to take, because there's only 36 frames, which shots do you really want, which shots are the most important.

But i'm open to other points of view, as long as they agree with me 100%.

A quick photo for my bday invitations. I'm throwing an "Ears and/or fake Moustache" party next week.. haha 2 actually(!) In different towns. My birthday's not for another week... hm.. can't say I'm a big fan of birthdays.. hence why I try to do something fun each year to ease myself into a new age plus it's a great chance to get everyone together for fun and frolics.

I've noticed, the older you get the harder it is to meet up. We all have separate lives now, some of us still studying and others in jobs, traveling, etc.. still there's always facebook so keeping in touch is not too bad :)

My first flash photo

I'd never taken flash photographs before (and never took another until I owned a digital) but when a pal asked if I wanted to borrow his flashgun while he popped over to the buffet for a Lyons individual fruit pie and a cup of BR chicory substitute, I thought I might as well have a go at it. We were at Bristol Temple Meads. I didn't record the train but the "Peaks" were the regular motive power on trains from the Midlands and further north. The locomotive belonged to Toton Depot and the V of the train describer code tells us that the train originated outside the Western Region. Photograph taken Friday 10th October 1975.

I am Back to Basic Uploader

Till this morning I was using the Flickr Uploader 2.5 , I could upload a batch of 50 or upto 98 pictures.
My file size is 4 MB..
I don't use any resizing software.Not even Photoshop.
However since this evening my Flickr Uploader 2.5 gives me a message
Unable to connect to Flickr internet connection may not be present.
This happened continously.So I switched to the Basic Uploader.
There is some genuine problem only God and Gods Chosen ones Flickr Customer Care know it..

I hope things turn normal as uploading is what keeps a photo bloggers soul alive..

IMG 6203 - a rose each day for the Ladies and something for the Gentlemen too

i will be away from Friday up to Sunday and cannot upload a flower for all of you on those days. Thus, I will upload three roses which I am sure the Ladies will love and a shot of a special weed for the Gentlemen. I am sorry guys, i don't know what you will like but the weed is a nice example of shallow depth of field.

There is a story to the red. peach and orange roses. I made those shots Monday of last week after the great floods. I checked on my Double A batteries and they all seemed flat. I ignored my camera because I knew I charged 4 of the batteries and the other 4 had a few more dozen shots available. I hurried to my favorite haunting grounds. The first shot I made was of another Lotus. I saw another flower and made a shot, nothing happened. The batteries were dead. I replaced the four and changed what I remembered were fresh batteries and voila, they were also flat. Then, I told myself, your are a dum dum... the charged batteries have been idle since before the storms and you should have recharged them when the camera displayed no pilot light.

I asked around where I can buy batteries and they all said, nowhere for your camera but there are eateries in a jeep and bus
terminal where they sell double cheap AA batteries. I found the very small stall and I was asked for what the batteries will be used
for. When I said for my camera,' the vendor said, do you like the set of 4 good for four shots or this set good for 10 shots. Wow, I told myself, my goose is dead. But I had to make some shots. I bought the more expensive P 20 for the four..gosh that is dirt cheap. I loaded the batteries, and ignored my inclination to bang my head
onto a wall for being dum dum. As soon as I made the shots of the three roses, one after the other, I saw this very small red dragonfly and I set my camera. It flew away and I followed. We must have gone over that routine 4 times before I was able to get a shot. That shot is my most beautiful dragon fly shot because this one is
a baby and had the longest whiskers, hairs, horns protrustions on its head and back. it was a stunner.

When I got home and I told my wife what happened to me. Sushi, my master, she who is now a star and who appeared on Explore beating my flowers at No. 268 and earning 138 comments and I with only 12 mention of my name as the photographer looked at me as if tellineg me. Gosh, you are a dum dum and I was right, you did not take good photos of me. I have to learn photography for I am now sure I will not make the same mistake you did. That dog knows a lot about cameras and photography from the many long hours of listenting to me and the Nikon family. There are lessons to be learned from my mistakes.

Lesson no. 1 - dont ignore whart your camera told you simply because you remembered you charged batteries. 2 - When you carry spare batteries, make sure those are charged. 3. Let your dog go with you on a photoshoot so they can observe the difficulties of making a photo so they will not think you purposely did not take a good photos of them. 4. When things seem to go against you, look more intensely, there are more beauties around you, just keep your eyes open.

Voy a estar fuera desde el viernes hasta el domingo y no puede subir una flor para todos ustedes en esos dias.

4 cargos de las baterias y los otros 4 tenian una docena de disparos mas disponibles. Me apresure a mis favoritos
motivos inquietante. El primer disparo que hice fue de otro de Lotus. Vi tambien a otro de flores e hizo un disparo, nada
sucedido. Las baterias estaban muertos. I reemplazaron a los cuatro y cambiar lo que yo recordaba las pilas estaban frescos
y voila, tambien eran planas. Entonces, me dije, tu son un dum dum ... las baterias cargadas han estado inactivos
desde antes de las tormentas y usted debe tener recargadas cuando la camara muestra ningun piloto.

Le pregunte a alrededor de donde puedo comprar las pilas y todos dijeron, en ninguna parte de su camara, pero hay lugares para comer en un jeep y autobus
terminal donde se venden pilas AA doble barato. Me encontre el puesto muy pequeno y me pregunto por lo que las baterias se utilizaran
para. Cuando le dije que para mi camara ", dijo el vendedor, ?te gusta el juego de 4 bueno para cuatro tiros o este buen conjunto de
10 disparos. Vaya, me dije, mi ganso muerto. Pero tuve que hacer algunas tomas. He comprado el mas caro
P 20 para los cuatro .. caramba que es muy barata. Cargue las pilas, e ignoro mi inclinacion a golpe

just popped in to say Hi! :) Thanks to all the sweet people inside and outside flickr who have been enquiring where i vanished. and some even reminded me that monday has passed and i havent put my maternity monday photo.. Damn! :)) i didnt know i had gotten myself into such a big commitment.. :)
well, the truth is, i am not able to sit infront of the computer for a long time, and i dont really like posting and running. makes me guilty. and who needs an extra dose of guilt?
