  • The pocket trumpet is a compact size B trumpet, with the same playing range as the regular trumpet. It is a non-standard instrument, not to be found in orchestral brass sections and is generally regarded as a novelty.

    phaeton
  • touring car: large open car seating four with folding top

  • In Greek mythology, Phaeton or Phaethon ( or ; ?????? "shining") was the son of Helios (Phoebus). Perhaps the most famous version of the myth is given us through Ovid in his Metamorphoses (Book II).

  • A vintage touring car

  • A light, open, four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage

  • Phaeton is the early 19th-century term for a sporty open carriage drawn by a single horse or a pair, typically with four extravagantly large wheels, very lightly sprung, with a minimal body, fast and dangerous. It usually had no sidepieces in front of the seats.

speaking trumpets

speaking trumpets

Fire Station Museum, Laurel Street, Columbia South Carolina

NOTE: In Columbia SC, and presumably elsewhere (I don't know for sure), independent "fire stations" were in operation. The text on the placard in this display case (see below) refers to the "Independent Fire Company" in operation. There was at least one other (presumably, competing) fire company in town at this time.

"SPEAKING TRUMPETS"
"These handsomely decorated speaking trumpets were used by fire officials to direct fire ground operations into the early 1900's. During the burning of Columbia on February 17 of 1865, Federal troops intentionally destroyed the majority of fire equipmewnt and plundered much of its valuables. The speaking trumpet on the left was plundered and later pawned by a federal soldier in Washington, D.C. shortly after the occupation of Sherman's troops. Due to the owner of W. Smith and Company, William Smith, the trumpet was honorably returned on February 7, 1867. Records of the Independent Fire Company record Mr. Smith's "honest heart and great kindness" for their miraculous return. The Independent Fire Company on this date unanimously elected Mr. William Smith Esquire an honorary member of the Independent Fire Company because of this noble gesture."

Here he is! Fellow Wallflower diner

A note on this dude: So, on a recent trip to Vancouver my sister and I went to a restaurant and the waitress was preparing for the arrival of a large group (8-10 people) that had apparently phoned ahead. When people from the group started to appear, a guy walked in and I though, "Oh, *that* guy." Then I thought, "Hey, wait--WHAT guy?" I was thinking maybe I had seen him around, on the bus or something (I'm on the bus A LOT) but then I was like, "Dude, this is not my city. So how would I know him?" After a minute, I realized he was the dude in this photo. And I actually had this photo still on my camera and freaked out my sister by telling her to take a good look at the dude a couple tables away, then showing her this very photo on my camera. Awesome. Also, another member of that party was carrying this CBC bag that I have stared at on the CBC website and talked myself out of ordering about ten times because I have a MILLION bags and shouldn't spend $35 plus $14 shipping AND taxes on another one, no matter how much I love love love love LOVE it.

Anyway, no offense to homeboy here, but I'm really bummed that this is far and away my best photo from this show.

Nitto/Rivendell Mark's Rack to fender

OK, I'm no engineer, but I knew this would work. Wanted to get rack mounted to fender and also fix fender-rub/-alignment issues in one fell swoop. Ta-dah! The quasi-cantilevered rack is essentially rigid, beyond the steel's flex, and the fender itself replaces the removed strut, allowing for a nice in-line fender, a lower-riding rando rack, and a cleaner scene overall. This bike just keeps getting dreamier and dreamier. And, yes, those are new Paul Racers. Went for anodized to complement the unpolished Zeppelin VO fenders, plus I can do without the harsh reflections come high summer. Shiny enough as is...

  • The fact of being frequent or happening often

guitar notes frequency - Frequency

Frequency

Frequency

Frequency is really two different--though inextricably linked--movies. First, the emotional drama of a father and son reunited after 30 years of separation. Then there's a science fiction thriller, in which a couple of chance solar storms, occurring exactly 30 years apart, can provide the agency through which the father and son can communicate using the very same ham radio in parallel time frames of 1969 and 1999. The son is John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel), a cop, and his father is Frank (Dennis Quaid), a firefighter who died on the job when John was 6, which just happens to be tomorrow for Frank when he and his now-adult son begin talking across time. This is great for John, because now he can warn his dad about the upcoming fire and avert the catastrophe that left him fatherless for most of his life. Accomplishing this gives John new memories of his life with Dad, but unfortunately alters the course of a serial killer, with tragic effect on John's family history. Since John's a cop, and the case he's working on turns out to be the same unsolved case from 30 years before, he and his father work together over the ham radio to solve the case and hopefully avert the tragedy that befell their family.
Time-travel stories have always been problematic, demanding either an extra degree of credulity on the part of the audience or an extra level of explanation on the part of storytellers, which is invariably cumbersome. Frequency handles the troublesome time paradoxes by having John explain how, having altered his past, he now experiences both timelines, as if he's had two pasts that converge in his present. And as changes continue to be wrought in John's past, we see him becoming more and more confused. No doubt the audience can sympathize, at least those of us who try to follow the ramifications of the rapidly accruing time fractures. Luckily, the bond between father and son is so strongly realized in the deeply felt performances of both Caviezel and Quaid that you don't even need to consider the science fiction elements in order to enjoy the film. But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to allow for the possibility of time shifts, you'll have a far richer experience. --Jim Gay

The Moon's stage was big enough that wireless units could be used to get around so as not to be tripping over cables. Ron and I put 'em to use. I never had any issues with mine until one evening at the Moon. We started our first set and suddenly this barrage of poorly played bass notes that aren't mine comes out of my bass cabs. I'm thinking "WTF?" and the rest of the band are looking at me giving me that "What the hell are you doing?" look. Throughout the whole first set sporadic flurries of horribly played bass notes kept assaulting us and the audience. Needless to say I'm livid and have no idea where this is coming from, the band is pissed and have no idea why I'm playing free form jazz. As soon as the set is finished I stormed off stage and up to the 3rd floor of the Moon where there are band rehearsal spaces. I find a hack band sequestered in one room attempting to play Rush songs but sounding more like the Sex Pistols and the bass player, who is standing right in front of his amp, is using a wireless on my frequency. I burst through the door wearing Army combat boots, beat up Jeans, no shirt, covered in sweat with hair down to the middle of my back. and shut the guys amp off in mid note. The band is looking at me like I'm about to kill them all and the bass player says "Dude, why the fuck did you turn off my amp?". I told them that his bass signal was coming through my gear downstairs in the middle of our show. He says that I should use a cable and I ask why he was rehearsing in a 10 by 10 room with a wireless. He says 'For the vibe man, I don't have a cable". I recall saying something about bringing my road crew up and helping them move there gear out via the window. The rest of the night was free form jazz free :)

Yamaha YTR-8310ZS Bobby Shew Professional Bb Trumpet, Silver-Plated

The Z was born of Yamaha's long and close partnership with the legendary trumpeter Bobby Shew. Bobby is an incredibly versatile player, and to meet all his playing requirements he wanted to create one super efficient instrument which could scream out a powerful lead, or play soft, mellow ballades. He finally found that instrument in the Z. When Yamaha decided to improve the Z, trumpet designer Shunichi Niwata and R&D specialist Bob Malone worked together with Bobby, passing into it all the special techniques they learned since designing the first Z. New Features The handmade 5" bell is one of the biggest Yamaha makes, and boasts a thinner tapering thickness for a very open and comfortable response. The special "French Bead" rim is flatter and wider than usual and helps create the warm tonal colors of the legendary vintage horns of the past. Yamaha's attention to detail is apparent in the carefully calculated gap between bell stem and valve casing - the kind of detail you can't see but it makes a big difference to artists like Bobby Shew. The main body features the same basic specs which have made the Z so popular: the precise leadpipe taper and super efficient step-bore design. Yamaha has even used some techniques they learned in developing the heavyweight Xeno trumpets to give the custom Z an unprecedented amount of tonal richness and depth. The method of crafting the leadpipe, the valve caps and buttons, and many of the braces, water keys and other parts are from the Xeno. All these contribute to the comfortable response of the Z. Monel pistonsMonel pistons are resistant to corrosion and are an ideal choice for professional trumpet pistons which must retain precise fit and smooth action over many years. Unique Bell Bead DesignThis design allows for a more resonant and projecting sound. Hammered one-piece bellThe newly designed yellow brass bell features a side seam and a variable wall thickness. This new manufacturing process results in a quicker ...

Apple Chips - III

Apple Chips - III

My sister and I were talking about how to make our own dried apples or "apple chips" this past Thanksgiving break.

She sent me a recipe, which I slightly modified for ease. I achieved thin, crispy sweet apple chips that were very tasty, fat-free and effortless.

I took a honey crisp apple and cut it into thin slices with a chef's knife (a mandoline slicer was too thin I thought). Then I soaked them for a few minutes in a solution of 1 qt water, 1/2 cup brown sugar and the juice of 1 lemon. Then I lay the slices in domino fashion on a baking sheet covered in parchment. The domino layout minimized the apple surfaces contacting the parchment or each other. I placed these in a 170-deg-F oven from 10 pm to 6 am. The next morning, Voila! Yummy, tasty apple chips. Some stuck to each other but, on cooling, they broke apart nicely.

I used a Honeycrisp apple for this run. Tonight, I'll use a mixture: Gala, Honeycrisp and whatever else I have.

Curry Cinnamon Apple Chip.

I made a bunch of these when it was cold outside and the heat in our building hadn't been turned on. It was a wonderfully scented way to keep the kitchen warm.

Ingredients:
2 or 3 tart apples (Muji or Granny Smith)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
1 Tbsp curry powder
1 tsp cinnamon

1. Using a mandoline slicer, slice the apples into 1/8" slices.

2. In a saucepan over low heat, make a simple syup from your water and brown sugar. Add spices.

3. Dip apple slices in syrup and lay slices close together on parchment lined baking sheet.

4. Bake at 225F degrees for 1 hour. Remove from baking sheet and let crisp on wire rack.
