So many problems and things going on right now. I don't have time to explain my whole macbook situation so I'll just paste what I posted on facebook lol.

so my macbook is out of commission. my entire life is upside down now.. just a really bad time with all my photo stuff going on.
Yesterday at 3:44pm via Facebook for iPhone Friends and Networks · Comment · Like

the nearest actual Apple store is about 2 hours from here so I called Apple and the long story short is I took it to a certified repair shop about 70 minutes away. There is a known problem with the particular graphics card in mine so if it fits a certain specification I can get it repaired free...but they have to scan it and they won't get around to JUST scanning it until tomorrow or the day after. If I don't qualify then i am looking at just a new macbook because the repair will be so high.

I have an external drive specifically for my macbook internal hardrive that I back up to most nights but I didn't last night so I lost one day of work. My actual hard drive in my macbook could still be okay but I wasn't able to get the files off before and they didn't have "time" to do it at the place I took it to. So I'm basically without my primary gateway to my life for who knows when...which is actually really sad lol. This just interrupts my normal workflow and I have a lot of projects and stuff going on.

NOW: They still haven't touched my computer...so MAD I need some kind of timeline

I have a deadline for 8 images this Friday (which won't happen lol) and 2 artist statements due on Thursday and Friday as well as titles and price list for one of my shows. St. Louis class trip and group show next week. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Macbook Cracked Top Cover 1

Macbook Cracked Top Cover 1

I've had my Macbook for a year and a half now and it's been a wonderful companion, sure the white finish gets dirty easily and it's prone to scratching but overall it's been superb.

About a month ago I noticed that there was a small hairline crack developing on the leading edge of the right hand side of the top cover bezel. Over the last few weeks this crack has grown and I've been planning to stage a careful repair until finally today, with a little help from Sophia, the crack became a full-blown broken piece of plastic. If I didn't act quickly my Macbook would have a foul looking hole in it.

With the aid of a little super glue... here's what I was able to achieve.

UPDATE: Apple are replacing my top cover free of charge.

UPDATE UPDATE: Got the Macbook back, nice new top cover. Still doesn't fit perfectly but I think that's a Macbook trademark... All in all ?111 worth of work done free of charge! Nice one Apple!

9/8/02 – I saw an ad in Yahoo for a 1968 , 13’ Boston Whaler Sport for sale. I called and said I was interested and sent the seller a deposit to hold the boat. That weekend, my Dad and I made a 350 mile round trip to Red Lion, PA on a Sunday afternoon to look at the boat. I knew if the hull was sound, nothing else mattered to me and could be restored based on what I read on the continuous wave website. I had bought a new trailer because I knew the existing trailer was not going to make it back. For $500, this is the boat we picked up that day. A 1968 13’ Boston Whaler with serial number intact. A gentleman and his two brothers helped lift the boat on to the new trailer and we towed it home behind my 1992 Honda Accord with 204,000 miles on it. The seller told me that after I called him for the boat, 5 other people called for it too. It was a great buy as the hull for this age was in very good condition. Minor fiberglass repairs were needed but overall it was great. Lots of work ahead.

Mosque vandalized | Blair urges tolerance, calm after dozens of windows smashed
Jun. 5, 2006, JIM WILKES, Toronto Star

Omar Farouk wandered slowly around the huge Rexdale mosque yesterday, pausing briefly at each of the three dozen broken windows and glass doors.

"It is a sad day for us," the president of the International Muslims Organization of Toronto said as he surveyed the overnight vandalism that caused more than $15,000 damage at one of the city's biggest mosques.

"This is the house of God," he said.

"Whoever did this has no respect for God and is not a decent citizen of this country."

The windshields of five vehicles parked behind the mosque were also smashed in the early morning spree.

Farouk said the attack, which appeared to be the work of a single vandal using an axe or hammer, was the first vandalism at the mosque since a single window was smashed the night following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.

Farouk said he feared the latest vandalism may have been a backlash after the arrests of 12 men and five youths accused of planning terrorist attacks in the Greater Toronto area.

Imam Hamid Slimi, spiritual leader of the 15,000-member mosque on Rexdale Blvd. in Etobicoke, agreed.

"Backlash was expected, but even after 9/11 we didn't have this," he said. "We denounce any terrorist attack.

"Here we are known for many good social works, not just for Muslims. We are known for our Canadian patriotism."

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair condemned the mosque attack yesterday.

"This will not be tolerated," Blair said at a press conference held in a basketball court adjacent to the Islamic Foundation of Toronto's mosque in Scarborough. "We are here to ensure the safety of everyone."

Police patrols have been increased in certain parts of the GTA and officers have been assigned to some places of worship, Blair said.

"Our officers are trained well in diverse cultures and we are committed to public safety, and we're working closely with you," Blair said. "You have my assurance we will respectfully serve."

Blair appealed for tolerance and calm as he was joined by more than a dozen community leaders on stage, including Imam Slimi.

"This is not about religion or faith. Some people may have legitimate concerns, and in some cases justifiable anger about political and social situations around the world," said Mohammad Alam, president of the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. "However, that should not be an excuse for any hateful or extreme or violent behaviour by any person, or group."

Slimi said that while insurance will pay to repair the physical damage at the Rexdale mosque, the attack cut much deeper for him and other Muslims.

"It is hurtful," he said. "It is a very sad thing."

Slimi said he was surprised that members of Greater Toronto's Muslim community have been accused of planning terrorist attacks.

"Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but if the proofs are there, let them pay for their crimes," he said. "Luckily, and thanks to God, it didn't happen.

"If they are criminal, they should be taken to court and I will have no sympathy for them, it doesn't matter what their faith.

"Islam says to avoid harming others with your hands and tongue," Slimi explained. "Killing one human being is like killing all mankind, just as saving one life is as saving all mankind.

"So if you contradict your faith, I have nothing to do with you.

"Today we live in a world of craziness, actions, reactions, provocations."

Farouk was also surprised to learn local Muslims were suspects in planned attacks.

"We never thought in our wildest dreams ... it is beyond our imagination that something like that could happen," he said.

"Islam is a very peaceful, compassionate, God-fearing religion. We are supposed to live in peace and harmony with each other.

(continued in comment)

City Hall

City Hall

In 1908, the Italian Renaissance Revival style building, which had been designed by local architect Charles Thompson, opened on April 15 with an Open House. In 1912, the new Central Fire Station, designed in the Beaux Arts style, was constructed adjacent to City Hall. During the 1930s, as the City grew, more space was needed. A garage, designed in the “austere, utilitarian” style was built in 1936 and a City Jail Annex, built by the WPA in the modified Art Deco style was built in 1938.

By 1955, the Dome which sat on top of City Hall needed severe repairs. The wooden supports and the copper cladding were both in dire shape. Mayor Pratt Remmel set aside money for the dome to be repaired. After defeating Remmel in his bid for a third term, Mayor Woodrow Mann scrapped plans for the repair and, indeed, scrapped the dome.

Oh, Canon SD850 IS, why? Why?

The manual (PDF downloaded from canon.com) indicates that if this persists i have to get it serviced.

Googling it indicates that it is common. I've actually had this happen two or three times already, and it fixed itself as soon as i powered it off and on again.

This time, though, it's not cooperating. The extended lens is stuck. and i mean STUCK. And when i power it on, it displays this message and then automatically powers itself down.

Now, there are a lot of people online who have had success by gently helping the camera by twisting the lens in/out while it's powering up/down, to help it complete its full extension. Others have left it alone for a couple of days, came back, and it worked. Another guy even claimed that removing the battery for two minutes solved his problem.

I have tried all of these things to no avail. I am leaving it in the air conditioned room overnight (just in case humidity has something to do with it) and will try it again in the morning.

I'm glad i brought my rebel XT with me. Perhaps it's good that this happened, so i'll actually start using it again.

Stay tuned!

[edit] it's dead. D-E-D dead. jen has sweetfully offered her wide angle lens for me to have fun with until it's time for me to return to 14 degree celsius and rainy vancouver :(

[edit] $200+ to repair. at least it's cheaper than buying a new camera. booooo!

The box says for 1988 and up Civic (I think manual with single cam are the qualifiers). The black things on top of 3 of the bearings are oil seals for where the axles enter the transmission, where the shift linkage enters and one other spot. This kit was $140. I'm not too excited about what looks like surface rust on the outside of two of the bearings. Fingers are crossed that that's all it is. A friend of mine is going to help me press all of these into place this weekend since I don't have a shop press or the right pullers.

I also scored a complete clutch kit (new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and alignment tool) off ebay for only $30 shipped! Apparently the guy bought the kit and sold his car before installing it, which ironically might happen with me too.

This is first gear. It's riveted together. It cannot be easily disassembled for repair. Booooo.

There's a needle rollerbearing right inside the shaft, that grips the clutch bell.

The bicycle-chain-link-lookin-things are tensioned with springs inside the wheel. When the engine revs high enough, the centrifugal force of the spinning is stronger than the springs, and enough to spin the shoes outward, engaging with the clutch bell and turning the drive gear, turning the back wheel.

Eddystone Lighthouse

Eddystone Lighthouse

Reproduced from a stamp designed by Dick Davis, illustrated by John Boon and issued by Royal Mail on 24 March 1998

Established 1703 (present tower 1882).
Height of tower 51 metres.
Height of light above Mean High Water 41 metres.
Range 24 miles.
Intensity 570,000 candle power.
Light Characteristics-- White Group Flashing twice every 10 seconds.
Subsidiary Fixed Red Light-- covers a 17 degree arc marking a dangerous reef called the Hands Deep.
Fog Signal-- Super Tyfon sounding three times every 60 seconds.
Automatic Light--Serviced via Helicopter Platform.

One of the world's most famous, if not the most famous lighthouses is the Eddystone Lighthouse, which stands on a treacherous group of rocks some fourteen miles out at sea, bearing 211° from Plymouth Breakwater, in the South West of the United Kingdom.
The Eddystone Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built on a small group of rocks in the open sea and resulted in a few disasters until the present lighthouse which stands there today. Given the harsh surrounding these early lighthouses where a marvel of ingenuity.

WINSTANLEY’S TOWER 1698 - 1703
The first tower attempt to render the Eddystone Reef of rocks safe to shipping was by Henry Winstanley a merchant and we are told an eccentric. Winstanley invested money in shipping and it was one of these ships that was wrecked on the Eddystone Reef. It was then that Winstanley promised to rid the English Channel of such a menace to shipping. This first lighthouse was a marvel of early engineering.
In 1696 Winstanley commenced work on a wooden structure The work progressed steadily until 1697 when a incident occurred in which a French privateer captured Winstanley and took him to France. England was at war with France at this time. However, when Louis XIV heard of the incident he immediately ordered that Winstanley be released saying that "France was at war with England not which humanity". This proved the international importance of the Eddystone Lighthouse.
The light on the Eddystone was first lit on the 14th of November 1698, and although the lighthouse survived that first winter it was found to be badly in need of repair. The whole top of the structure was removed and a 2nd tower was then erected.

During the following spring Winstanley greatly altered and strengthened his 2nd tower whilst imparting numerous new features. The lighthouse was finally finished in 1699.

During the following spring Winstanley greatly altered and strengthened his 2nd tower whilst imparting numerous new features. The lighthouse was finally finished in 1699.
Having great confidence in his structure Winstanley expressed a wish to be on the lighthouse during a storm. In November 1703, the greatest storm ever recorded in this country occurred and Winstanley had arrived at the lighthouse the evening before to carry out urgent repairs. The following day there was hardly any of the lighthouse structure to be seen and its occupants had disappeared. The lighthouse had survived only five years.

RUDYERD’S TOWER 1709 - 1755.

The 3rd lighthouse was built by a man who managed to get a patent charter for the Eddystone Lighthouse. His name was Captain Lovett. He managed to get a lease on the Eddystone Rocks for a period of 99 years by an Act of Parliament. As a result he was allowed to charge all ships passing a toll of 1 penny per ton, both inwards and outward. I am unsure how this was collected but it must have been interesting.
The designer of this lighthouse was John Rudyerd, who was a silk merchant. Rudyerd designed a cone shaped tower instead of Winstanley's octagonal shape. His final wooden tower was lit in 1709 and proved much more serviceable than Winstanley's Lighthouse. This lighthouse had been built by a great amateur and stood for 47 years until the night of 2nd December 1755, when the top of the lantern caught fire.
It was reported that 94 year old Henry Hall was the keeper of the watch that night. He did his best to put out the fire by throwing water upwards from a bucket. While doing so the leaden roof melted and the molten lead ran down over him, burning him badly; his mouth was open whilst looking up and some of the molten lead ran down his throat. He and the other keeper battled continuously against the fire but they could do nothing as the fire was above them all the time, as it burnt downwards it gradually drove them out onto the rock. The fire was observed from the shore by a Mr. Edwards, 'a man of some fortune and more humanity'. The old account says he sent off a boat which arrived at the lighthouse at 10 a.m. after the fire had been burning for 8 hours. The sea was too rough for the boat to approach the rock so they threw ropes and dragged the keepers through the waves to the boat. The lighthouse continued to burn for 5 days and was completely destroyed.
Henry Hall died some 12 days later. Doctor Spry of Plymouth who attended him made a post mortem and found a flat oval piece of lead in his stomach

An unusual kitchen!, Skerryvore Lighthouse (12 miles SW of Tiree), The Atlantic Ocean

In interior view of the second of the great rock towers to be designed for the Northern Lighthouse Board by the Stevenson family of engineers.

Skerryvore lighthouse stands on a treacherous reef in the Atlantic around 12 miles south-west of the island of Tiree. Alan Stevenson’s masterpiece took six years to build and was finally lit in 1844. On an earlier visit to the rock in 1814 with Alan’s father Robert Stevenson (builder of the Bell Rock Lighthouse), the writer Sir Walter Scott commented that ‘It will be a most desolate position for a lighthouse – the Bell Rock and Eddystone a joke to it’. The first season’s work was completely wasted when the wooden barrack built on the rock to house the workers was washed away in a winter storm after the men had left the rock for the season.

Skerryvore is regarded as being the most graceful example of rock lighthouse design in the world, the 48m high tower (Scotland’s tallest) is made of granite from the Isle of Mull. Unlike many other rock lighthouses the granite blocks at the base of the tower are not dovetailed and interlocking – Alan Stevenson calculated that the weight of the tower would provide the strength needed to resist the power of the seas – after 167 years service he has of course been proven right!

The most dramatic event in the lighthouse’s history was on an evening in March 1954 when a fire broke out in the tower, the fire quickly spread upwards until it reached the room where the explosives used for the fog signalling device were kept . The subsequent explosion spread the flames to both the upper and lower compartments of the lighthouse. The three keepers were fortunate in that it was not stormy weather outside and they were able to escape from the tower and stand on the rock below, they were also fortunate in that the relief boat for the change of keepers was due the next day. The fire itself completely gutted the interior of the lighthouse and caused some of the granite blocks themselves to crack. The damage was not fully repaired and the lighthouse manned again until 1959.

The interior of the lighthouse was redone again when Skerryvore was automated in 1994.

Technicians from the Northern Lighthouse Board still occasionally stay in the lighthouse to carry out maintenance work.

U.S. Army Soldier Show to perform in Washington’s Warner Theatre

By Tim Hipps
Installation Management Command

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Soldier Show will perform in Washington’s historic Warner Theatre on Oct. 1, in what could be its final performance at 13th Street NW.

The Army Entertainment Division’s BRAC-mandated move to San Antonio places the feasibility of future Warner Theatre shows in question. Whether or not the show returns to the Nation’s Capital will depend on resources and whether the theater has dates available that coincide with the show’s performances on Fort Belvoir, Va.

The song-and-dance production annually tours military installations, providing “Entertainment for the Soldier, by the Soldier.” The Warner Theatre performance traditionally has served as a command performance for senior Army leaders in the National Capital Region.

Free tickets are available at the Warner Theatre Box Office, Fort Belvoir Community Club, Army Recreation Services Headquarters (Room 1D645) at the Pentagon, and the Hoffman Building (Room 2S60) in Alexandria, Va. Six tickets are allowed per person each visit.

Sgt. Irving Berlin wrote the first U.S. Army Soldier Show while on active duty at Camp Upton in Long Island, N.Y. “Yip Yip Yaphank” debuted on Broadway in 1918.

During World War II, Berlin created another Soldier Show for Broadway: “This Is the Army,” which inspired a 1943 movie starring Ronald Reagan.

That film offered Kate Smith singing "God Bless America" and Berlin himself singing "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning." The show included "This is the Army, Mr. Jones," perhaps the only other song that older folks in contemporary audiences might recognize.

Today’s audiences can easily identify with songs that showcase the talents of active-duty Soldiers who were selected by audition from throughout the Army.

They are amateur artists who have a passion for music, dance and performing. They come from information technology, human resources, food services, signal systems support, petroleum supply, combat medicine, aircraft structural repair, and other tactical units.

The carnival concept of this year’s show will take audiences on a globe-spanning journey to more fun-filled venues in 90 minutes than some folks experience in a lifetime.

“It’s an opportunity to actually take the audience on a journey with us,” Soldier Show director Victor Hurtado said. “And not just to the continental United States – we have a great international scene.”

Africa, Samoa, Latin America and Nepal, with influences from India, Thailand and China, are represented in the show that plays to the strengths of cast members from several countries. Each international scene features authentic music from that locale.

This year’s cast features strong instrumentalists on the violin, drums, guitar, keyboards and bass who will keep the performers on the move as they dance from scene to scene.

“There are a lot of dancers, a lot of movement in the show,” Hurtado said. “But there some great voices as well. And some great stage presence. We have some great rapper and spoken-word guys, so we have quite a bit of that driving the show.”

MWR is in the business of taking Soldiers and Families away from the trials and tribulations of Army life during wartime, Hurtado said.

“I think this will definitely inspire the patriotism, but really help you escape,” Hurtado said. “You wouldn’t go to the circus, a boardwalk, a country fair, a fun house – in four different areas of the world – and a Fourth of July celebration, all in one day. You could never physically do that, but you’re going to be able to do that at this show.”

The show will tour for eight months before concluding Dec. 10 with a VIP performance in Army Entertainment Division’s newly renovated theater on Fort Sam Houston.

The Soldier Show is not funded with taxpayer dollars, but with non-appropriated funds generated from Morale, Welfare and Recreation business programs and with generous corporate sponsorship.

The 2011 U.S. Army Soldier Show is sponsored by Army G-1’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program and Navy Federal Credit Union.
