Labor Day

Labor Day

Here in the US, this is the Labor Day weekend, a holiday created in recognition of the organized labor movement.

"Whatever their faults, unions have been the only powerful and effective voice working people have ever had in the history of this country."
—Bruce Springsteen

"Although it is true that only about 20 percent of American workers are in unions, that 20 percent sets the standards across the board in salaries, benefits and working conditions. If you are making a decent salary in a non-union company, you owe that to the unions. One thing that corporations do not do is give out money out of the goodness of their hearts."
—Molly Ivins

"If hard work were such a wonderful thing, surely the rich would have kept it all to themselves."
—Lane Kirkland

"Every advance in this half-century—Social Security, civil rights, Medicare, aid to education, one after another—came with the support and leadership of American Labor."
—Jimmy Carter

"The labor movement is the last noble protest of the American people against the power of incorporated wealth."
—Wendell Phillips

Yes, I was in a car accident!

Yes, I was in a car accident!

Well...day four of my vacation and I get into a car accident! I was a passenger in the car and the driver (my friend) and I were rushed to the hospital. She was in a lot of pain and so was I. At first I didn't care about me, but the pain started getting worse and worse and soon enough I was having trouble breathing.

Thankfully (thank you God!) we were both sent home with pain killers and anti-inflamatories and told to rest rest rest.

It was so scary though! I totally saw that car coming in towards my side of the car (they drive on opposite sides) and I thought we were done for. I got even more scared when smoke started coming out! Unbelievable!

1180 Peachtree, Symphony Tower

1180 Peachtree, Symphony Tower

1180 Peachtree, commonly known as the Symphony Tower, is a 41-story skyscraper located at 1180 Peachtree Street in the Midtown district of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Rising to a height of approximately 657 feet (200 m), the building includes office and retail space in its 351,616 square meter of floor area as well as a 1,200 space parking deck. Construction was completed in 2006.

Designed by architectural firm Pickard Chilton of Connecticut, 1180 Peachtree incorporates various environmental innovations that won the prestigious U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) award. This building is marked on the skyline by two sweeping glass fins extending upwards from the north and south walls. These fins are lit from inside at night for a dramatic skyline presence, giving what is considered to be a gothic feel.

Over 60% of the tower's leasable space is occupied by Atlanta-based law firm King & Spalding as its international headquarters. The firm was previously located in downtown's 191 Peachtree Tower.

The building is intended to be the "campanile" of the Woodruff Arts Center's proposed Atlanta Symphony Center, which is designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and was planned to occupy land adjacent to the structure along 14th Street. The $300 million Symphony Center will not begin construction until fundraising goals are met although the projection is estimated to be between 2007 and 2010.

PJR Reports July-August 2011

PJR Reports July-August 2011

Editor’s Note:

Internet protocol

THE MEDIA whether old (print and broadcast) or new (blogs, online news, and social networking sites) were once again in the center of attention in July and August, as they had been a year ago during the Aug. 23, 2010 hostage-taking incident.

The attention was not necessarily public, being mostly limited to media students, critics, and some practitioners, and was not in the same category of disturbing behavior as that displayed by certain media organizations and practitioners during the hostage-taking crisis. But the reason for the attention was unsettling enough.

While covering the flooding of Metro Manila streets early in August, a GMA-7 news crew focused on taking footage of the predicament of University of the Philippines law student Christopher Lao, who drove his car into floodwaters so deep his vehicle stalled—and whose spontaneous reaction when interviewed was to ask why he had not been informed that the flood was that deep.

Once shown, the GMA-7 footage elicited a storm of comments in the blogs and social networking sites ridiculing Lao. GMA-7 apologized for the gaffe, while disingenuously insisting that it had not really focused on the Lao incident but had been mostly covering the floods, in tacit recognition that the Lao episode was a peripheral issue, the journalistic value of relevance being the dominant criterion of news coverage. Lao ended up apologizing for his reaction, apparently because he had become aware that he was being ridiculed and criticized for his question’s (Why was I not informed?) implicit claim to entitlement. But those who ridiculed him online would not be moved, most of the bloggers and Twitter and Facebook denizens insisting that they were well within their rights, implying that those rights were absolute.

The other episode was far more distressing for its possibly long-term impact on free expression. The ABS-CBN 2 “investigative” program XXX did a report on a Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) exhibit focused on those portions of its crew apparently thought were scandalous enough to help boost its ratings, namely images by one of the artist-contributors, Mideo Cruz, that among others showed Jesus Christ with Mickey Mouse ears and with one of those Baguio ashtrays decorated with a phallus glued on his face.

This egregious example of plain sensationalism, complete with low level lighting to suggest that what was being covered was either illicit or criminal or both, was enough to ignite not only protests but also threats of physical harm not only against Cruz but also against CCP officials. The CCP took the exhibit down not because it accepted the argument from Church-connected groups that “free expression is not absolute” and which implied that being offended by an art work or anything else defines its limits, but out of fear of vandalism and their and the artist’s safety. Meanwhile, the usual suspects in the blogs, in Twitter and in Facebook, let loose the usual avalanche of insults, name-calling, and ridicule that passes for argument among the cyber terrorists who, while joining the free-expression-is-not-absolute chorus, proclaim that their right to abuse anyone is.

What disturbs is not only the precedent the CCP has established by buckling under the pressure from fundamentalist religious groups. The recklessness with which broadcast media provoked both the attacks against Lao and Cruz is similarly a matter of concern. But the misuse, abuse and debasement of the Internet as a vehicle of free expression by precisely some of those elements who claim that right, but who would deny it to others, is especially disheartening. It demonstrates the need for those who see the Internet as an authentic vehicle of informed and rational empowerment to put together an acceptable self-regulatory protocol, which, while not legally binding, would at least have the moral force to stop and prevent the further deterioration of Internet discourse.

No Ifs Ands Or Dogs

No Ifs Ands Or Dogs

Founded in 1981, a touring/performing band since 1984, Cheer-Accident are a band that has always done its utmost to surprise their audience with constant reinvention, yet always doing so with a sharp focus. Celebrating their 30th anniversary, "No Ifs, Ands Or Dogs" is the group's 18th album. It is an album that crosses many stylistic boundaries, from straightforward pop songs to sound collage to art-rock. The album uses a huge variety of studio techniques and 'outside the box' imagination to put all of these disparate elements together in a compellingly cohesive way. The group has always toured heavily, and the band will continue to play regularly in its Chicago hometown (most recently they appeared opening for Tortoise), as well as twice yearly jaunts to the rest of the USA, and their second large-scale European tour will be happening in this spring.

    immigration law
  • Nationality law is the branch of law concerned with the questions of nationality and citizenship, and how these statuses are acquired, transmitted, or lost. By custom, a state has the right to determine who its nationals and citizens are.

  • Immigration law refers to national government policies which control the phenomenon of immigration to their country.

  • This is the area of law governing the right of non-EU citizens to residence in the UK.

Police in parts of the London borough of Westminster are carrying out the UK's first surveillance operation of the sex workers and the card boys they employ.Undercover officers pose as punters and call the women to make an appointment at the flats where they operate. Once they have the women's addresses they check them with the land registry and obtain the flat owners' details. Next they visit the flat, reveal their identity and tell the women they must take their cards down. Police may be accompanied by immigration officials and women who are working here illegally are deported.

Last year BT removed 150,000 cards a week from central London phone boxes - an estimated 13 million cards are distributed across Britain each year.
While prostitution is not illegal in Britain, soliciting on the street is. Since the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 came into operation placing a prostitute's card in a phone box has become a criminal offence.
The council is working with telecoms firms on call barring. To date BT have call barred 500 lines.

To participate this ethical cleaning campaign, the project consisted of a series of advertisement. Through the number on card customers make contact to every gallery, museum around London.
By this enabling the law emforcement to crack down the biggest sex industry in Western civilization.

Koreatown, Los Angeles

Koreatown, Los Angeles

Seen at Museum of Korean Emigration History, Wolmido, Incheon.

The Korean community in the US remained small for decades, thanks largely to US immigration laws that restricted Asian immigration. But after the end of World War II, and especially during the Korean War, adopted war orphans and war brides entered the US in significant numbers. Korean academics also went often to the US for their studies, and settled afterwards.

In 1965, the civil rights movement changed immigration laws to allow easier Asian immigration. Korean immigration started to take off at that point. South Korea also encouraged many people to emigrate to the US, partly because of the economic poverty and partly because of overpopulation. (Also, the long-term goal was for the Korean emigrants to naturalize in America, and vote in US elections in ways favorable to South Korea's interests.) As Korean immigrants from 1965 on tended to be well-educated and had some money, Koreans went from a very persecuted minority to a model minority pretty quickly.

The Korean immigrant community changed in other ways as well. Before 1965, San Francisco and California's Central Valley had the primary Korean population in the US, but afterwards, Los Angeles took over, and Los Angeles's huge Koreatown became official in 1982, as seen in this photo. Also, the democratic revolution in June 1987 in South Korea led many right-wingers to flee for America into President Reagan's open arms, and combined with Koreatown's suffering in the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the politicization of Christianity in both America and South Korea, Korean-Americans have become a far-right special interest group similar to Cuban and Vietnamese immigrants. (This is another reason why the Korean-Americans are called the "model minority," being lavished tons of praise from the right-wing masters.)

Today, Korean migration to the US has changed again; most South Koreans settling in the US are likely to be skilled professionals looking for better opportunities and living standards, rather than fleeing political turbulence and working odd long hours as had been the traditional case. Many had already entered the US on nonimmigrant work visas before converting their status. And the numbers of new Korean migrants to America, while still significant, are quite down from the McCarthyist exodus days of the late 1980s.

Day 215 - project SELF

Project SELF (Summer Employment in Law Firms) is a program designed to give minority high school juniors from low-income households an incredible hands-on summer internship at local law firms.
I was lucky enough to be invited by a friend of my father to tag along for the day and shadow her as she shot the recognition dinner for these truly amazing high school students.
I had a blast getting a peek into the life of an actual photographer and learned a lot as well. Overall it was a great day.
