KIRITIMATI, Kiribati (Jan. 12, 2011) – Navy Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric Yobs, officer in charge of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 11 Christmas Island Detail (center), explains to Air Force Brig. Gen. Stanley J. Osserman, Jr., Mobilization Assistant to Director of Strategy and Policy, U.S. Pacific Command (left), and other service members, a solar powered water pumping system that his Seabees built for a school on Kiritimati (Christmas) Island. The water is trickling into the elasticized poly-felt top I made for the worm bin bucket. It looks nice, but I have since taken it off because I found a folded newspaper on top works just as well to shade the worms and it is easier to lift up to feed the worms. The green stuff floating the water is duckweed and there is a tomato and a basil plant immersed in the red basin. The water pump is immersed on the left.
Experimental vermiponics flow-through system. A solar-powered pump pulls water up to the top planter from the red basin below. Hydroponic tubing trickles the water into the buckets below, until reaching the grey bucket near the bottom, which contains about 1.5 pounds of red wiggler composting worms. Small holes in that bucket let the water fall back down into the red basin, which contains a few guppies to eat mosquito larvae. I don't feed them, but I do put kitchen scraps and rabbit poo into the top of the grey bucket holding the worms.
