buoy, what a lot of pots ! Small tender full of lobster pots. This is a 117mm equvialent zoom in 35mm and the detail in the pot netting is quite a good resolution. I like the way the highlights in the water have been picked up by the camera but I didn't notice the slight shade covering the boat until after the image was taken. (Image set -0.7 ev under exposed to richen the colours. ) boating on Minnetonka Lake Minnetonka is one of the best lakes on which to cruise around, show off, all of that. It's not a lake on which to escape the crowds, that's for sure. Nice, pretty boat, anyway. 365.51 Busted We've given Zelda a nickname - "Zelda the Destoyer." She's knocked down blinds, and this is the second lamp she's broken. Luckily, these are just cheap Ikea lamps, so it's not a huge loss (plus we can save the shade). We're going to try to find a replacement lamp this weekend. Mr. Martini suggested a cinder block with a lightbulb on top. I'm thinking that might be a good idea. IKEA Gravad Lax Yes, it is true. The only reason I go to IKEA is for the food. This magnificent feast cost less than $9. I usually go for the meatballs, but saw this and remembered seeing it on an episode of New Scandinavian Cooking. I had to try it and I wasn't disappointed. ....let's smoke a pipe! Old man from a Denka tribe smoking a traditional handmade pipe-they called "Aging". Denka are biggest Nilotic tribe in Sudan.They are living on boss of banks of White Nile state across to Bahr Al Ghazal province. Denka are divided to 3 main branches: Padang,Bor and Bahr Al Ghazal. As tribal mark they have 6 lines on their forhead,they made it by hot knife..... Photo I took on the ship during my journey to Malakal,Southern Sudan. Pipe I took a photo of the roof of the bus shelter while waiting for the bus. I liked the plain functionality of the pipe work against the grain of the wood. Usual tweaking and overlay then turned photo. Not sure about end result but there you go. Softball and tacos (16/365) Day 16: After falling into a pattern of taking photos of things in and around the house, I was determined to make today's shot something outdoors. Since Sunday is the day my coed recreational softball team plays, I took my camera to the field looking for something to capture. After the softball game, we stayed at the park to test out a friend's new portable commercial grill. We had tacos with three types of meat (carne asada, al pastor, and chicken) and several varieties of salsa. Luckily for me, as we were enjoying our tacos just before sunset, the skies over our field turned a pretty reddish-orange shade. Unfortunately, I took dozens of shots but was not quite able to capture the real-life beauty of the sky. After initially failing to get the shot right in post-processing, I uploaded an SOOC shot. After doing so, I couldn't shake my unsatisfied feeling, so I spent a couple of hours with Lightroom 3 tutorials and getting to know the software better. This updated photo represents my best attempt to salvage my shot. P.S. I've only been using Lightroom 3 for a month. I'm a total newbie to serious photo-editing software. In that sense, this project is allowing me the opportunity to develop my almost nonexistent post-processing and photo-editing skills. This house, with a HERS Index of 25, demonstrates "solid performance." Yet the builder is clearly committed to ongoing education or improving the performance of future homes. The company also did an "admirable job" of maintaining and taking advantage of the site's natural features, especially in keeping existing trees for shading. Maybe I'll crochet some colourful thingy for them one day :) I have sensory issues aka I worn down my adrenals by having my body in a permanent alarmed state for 30+ years. Fight or Flight will deplete the body. This stems from being sensory defensive which means my body picks up on everything a 'normal' person processes as not-threatening. My body perceives minute sounds and smells and deems everything to be a threat (sound, smell, clothing tags). It acts accordingly. After getting ill I changed gears. Did lot of study. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale, Main Reception Hall This fresco panel from Boscoreale depicts a man and woman seated side by side. To the right is the heroic figure of a semi-nude man lounging on an elaborate, gilded chair. A dark-colored himation is loosely draped across his loins. Unfortunately, damage to the fresco has obliterated the upper part of the man's head, which was turned in profile toward the woman seated to his right. He rests his hands on a short gilded staff firmly set on the ground in front of him. Most likely this is a scepter, an ancient symbol of regal power that was also an attribute of Zeus, ruler of the Olympian gods. For Hellenistic dynasts, the scepter retained a strong meaning of justice. The late third-century B.C. philosopher Theophrastus advised that 'the true king should rule by the scepter and not the spear" (Peri basileias II). To the left is a seated woman wearing a chiton and a himation that is drawn up over the back of her head. She rests her feet on a gilded footstool, and leans her chin on her hand in a gesture of reflection. Based on stylistic comparisons with other works of art, it has been suggested that the seated figures represent Achilles and his mother Thetis. For the spectator in antiquity, the woman's melancholy countenance and the gesture with her right hand may have been read as expressions of Thetis' concern or grief at the fate of her only son. More recently, however, it has been suggested that the woman represents the wife of the seated Hellenistic ruler to her left. As Roman aristocrats greatly admired Alexander the Great and the first generation of his successors, this seated ruler may be a dynast of the early Hellenistic period. The inclusion of this panel and the others that once adorned Room H of the villa at Boscoreale would have created a majestic interior that had particular relevance to political life in Rome during the time the villa was decorated, sometime between 60 and 30 B.C. This period in Roman history witnessed a series of great military rulers—Pompey the Great, Julius Caesar, and Marc Antony—all of whom were viewed as latter-day Alexanders who eventually would conquer the East for Rome. 5316Landscaping on the High Line Before it was turned into a park, the line was in disrepair, although the riveted steel elevated structure was basically sound. Wild grasses, plants, shrubs, and rugged trees such as sumac grew along most of the route. It was slated for demolition under the administration of New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. In 1999, neighborhood residents Robert Hammond and Joshua David created the community group Friends of the High Line[1] to push the idea of turning the High Line into an elevated park or greenway, similar to the Promenade Plantee in Paris. In 2004, the New York City government committed $50 million to establish the proposed park. On June 13, 2005, the U.S. Federal Surface Transportation Board issued a certificate of interim trail use, allowing the City to remove most of the line from the national railway system. On April 10, 2006, Mayor Michael Bloomberg presided over a ceremony that marked the beginning of construction. The park is designed by the New York-based landscape firm of James Corner Field Operations, and architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with planting design from Piet Oudolf of the Netherlands and engineering design by Buro Happold.[4] Major backers have included Diane von Furstenberg her husband Barry Diller and her children Alexander von Furstenberg and Tatiana von Furstenberg, and Philip Falcone. Hotel developer Andre Balazs, owner of the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, built the 337-room Standard Hotel straddling the High Line at West 13th Street.[5] The southern section of the High Line park, running from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, opened to the public on June 8, 2009. This southern section includes five stairways and elevators at 14th Street and 16th Street. The park welcomes visitors with naturalized plantings that are inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the disused tracks[6] and with new, often unexpected views of the city and the Hudson River. Pebble-dash concrete walkways unify the trail, which swells and constricts, swinging from side to side, and divides into concrete tines that meld the hardscape with the planting embedded in railroad gravel mulch. Stretches of track and ties recall the High Line's former use. Most of the planting, which includes 210 species, is of rugged meadow plants, including clump-forming grasses, liatris and coneflowers, with scattered stands of sumac and smokebush, but not limited to American natives. At the Gansevoort end, a grove of mixed species of birch already provides some dappled shade by late afternoon. Ipe timber for the built-in benches has come from a managed forest certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, to ensure sustainable use, conservation of biological diversity, water resources, and fragile ecosystems.[7] The park will eventually extend from Gansevoort Street north to 30th Street where the elevated tracks turn west around the Hudson Yards development project[8] to the Javits Convention Center on 34th Street. The northernmost section, from 30th to 34th Streets, is still owned by the CSX railroad company, but the New York City Planning Commission has announced a move toward City ownership of this section. Source material: Echium vulgare is known in England as Viper’s Bugloss, a much-welcomed coloniser of bare and infertile soils. Old world herbalists praised it as a cure-all, and adherents of the Doctrine of Signatures saw, in its serpentine curlings and the apparently scaly appearance of its stems, a sure sign that it was an antidote for serpent venom. The plant was inadvertently introduced to the Americas, its seed mixed with cereals - where it is known by its Somerset names of Blueweed, Snake Flower and Viper’s Grass - and instantly became an invasive weed. In Australia, the introduction was more deliberate: Mrs Patterson sowed it in her garden, and then watched with growing horror as it spread like wildfire. Even before this calamitous event, I can remember negotiating whole fields of this plant in my childhood walks near the Canberra suburb of Weston. Bees love the plant, and I can testify to the delicious – if somewhat acquired – taste of the honey, which is also reportedly toxic in large quantities. In Australia, the plant is sometimes known as Salvation Jane, on account of the fact that it provides much-needed fodder for farm animals after a fire, but its other, more common appellation documents the tragic results which so often ensue: it is Patterson’s Curse. I have deliberately referenced Claudius in Hamlet and a patriotic poem by Robert Browning. The imagined reference to the brown snake was inspired by a similar incident, beautifully described by W.H. Down, down, down Wet hair, showing the shades of blonde. As it will only stay blonde a couple of days before going turquoise I'm not entirely worried about the uniformity of the bleached part. Though I had intended on going over the tips again when I bleached out a few other random tips - though my dad says to stay with what I have. I rarely wear my hair totally down now...it curls all funky and I feel like Florence Henderson. Don't want to be a Brady. But also my hair is super duper long compared to how I normally have it cut...haven't yet found a new stylist to cut my hair the way I want. So I've been sticking to the pigtails and ponytails style. The Bureau of Inquiries (second draft) The Bureau of Inquiries was an exhibition I curated in August of 1990. August? There are many more reasons to avoid staging an exhibition in August and only one to support it. The advisability of producing an exhibition during a Philadelphia August is questionable. It is the month when the temperature and the humidity replicate a jungle ambience, albeit light on the flora but heavy on the fauna. The weather in Philadelphia during August is stereotypical of that of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It does little to inspire one to leave their air-conditioned homes. The weather during August inspires the citizenry to go on vacation in droves to escape it. Very few exhibitions open in August. The summer months are used for galleries and museums to trot out group shows, air out work condemned to storage areas and for the exhibition of loss leaders.Typically the exhibition season begins in September and increases dramatically in October. There is only one reason to stage an exhibition in August and that reason is free rent. Although I have no clear memory to support this, I think that the owners of the building, Mark and Elena Salz, gave us access to the space rent free. If it wasn't for negative publicity and scandal the exhibition might not have an audience at all. The basic premise of the exhibition was the presentation of the work of Philadelphia artists that were influenced by the Surrealist movement. Surrealism influenced a large contingent of the artist community here and I thought it an appropriate subject to investigate and to present in a group exhibition. The empty storefront below the Salz' apartment was transformed into gallery. Instead of the Minimalist look of most contemporary galleries, the Bureau of Inquiries was fitted with an antique desk, a very old and heavy rotary phone and other objects from the period that Surrealism flourished. There was a bookcase that contained literature written by Surrealist writers and monographs on artists connected to and influenced by the movement. A professionally manufactured blue metal sign with Bureau of Inquiries in white lettering was hung in the window. It had the name of the exhibition on it but nothing pertaining to the fact that it was an exhibition. There were a number of paintings on the wall but the inclusion of the desk, phone and bookcase gave the place a domestic atmosphere that an uniformed observer might find confusing regarding the purpose of the business in the space. All of the works were small and there were a few sculptures on pedestals arranged throughout the gallery. A mutiny began before the opening of the exhibition. There were 80 paintings available for hanging in the store area in the back room of the space and a limited space to hang them. To solve this problem I had the works wired so that any four paintings could be hung in a designated spot at a 60" center. There were 20 such spots. My plan was for Kevin and another art handler to don white lab coats and switch paintings throughout the entire opening, him moving clockwise and the other moving counterclockwise. It took 45 minutes for two people at a leisurely pace to change every painting in the gallery, thus creating an entirely different exhibition on view every 45 minutes. This seemed to me as a great solution to the problem of exhibiting a maximum amount of work in a minimum amount of space. This strategy was later used by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for an exhibition about the influence of John Cage but no one from that organization ever acknowledged that the Bureau of Inquiries had invented the scheme. This was typical of their position regarding Philadelphia artists at the time. They ignored them. I expected a certain amount of opposition to this idea from the exhibiting artists so I waited until a couple of days before the opening to alert everyone. Kevin was vehemently opposed to the idea. Switching paintings in theory was fine with him as long as he wasn't the person switching the paintings. He did not want to be that visible to the audience and he had no interest in being involved in what he saw as performance art. He refused to wear a lab coat. That was not negotiable as far as he was concerned. He saw no reason for us to wear lab coats since we could switch the paintings without them. I wanted the people that switched the paintings to wear lab coats to separate them visually from the audience and give them a professional look that might inspire people to get out of their damn way as they moved artwork through a crowded opening. Frankly if it helped it didn't help much, people either were oblivious to the people moving the paintings or they considered them a nuisance. I had hoped not to be involved in handling the art work, in part because I did that all day five days a week at Philadelphia Museum of Art. We also needed someone to open and close the door to the storage area for us since our hands would be occupied with paintings. Wooden Awning On the symmetrical house; two of these, one on either side of the front door. I love the way they are made, with the double layer of pickets, separated by rods. I imagine the air would have circulated nicely while keeping the sun off and letting some of the rain trickle through. I think it's a great design, worthy of repeating now.
