Blood - Extreem Macro
I’ve been getting a lot of Flickr mail from people about my blood smear macro photo’s and that’s why I decided to post a few more of these shot with some background info.
This is the first one but I’ll post a few more along the way showing: Malaria, kissing disease and/or Leukemia.
Red blood cells are the most common type of blood cell and they delivering oxygen to the body tissues via the blood. The cells are filled with hemoglobin that can bind to oxygen. The blood's red color is due to the color of hemoglobin. In humans, red blood cells develop in the bone marrow, and live for about 120 days.
Platelets, or thrombocytes, are small bodies derived from cells. They circulate in the blood of mammals and are involved in the formation of blood clots. If the number of platelets is too low, excessive bleeding can occur; however, if the number of platelets is too high, blood clots can form (thrombosis), which block blood vessels, and may cause a stroke and/or a heart attack.
White blood cells, or leukocytes are cells of the immune system defending the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials. Leukocytes are found throughout the body, including the blood and lymphatic system. The number of leukocytes in the blood is often an indicator of disease. In conditions such as leukemia, the number of leukocytes is higher than normal, and in leukopenia, this number is much lower.

My back is extremely sore today. :( I think sitting and concentrating so hard and long while painting yesterday reminded me that my back has yet to feel better from my accident. This is me trying to put some heat on it tonight. Whatever I do for it doesn't seem to help. My doc recommended ibuprofen, which does *nothing*. I'm actually a little bit amazed of how little it actually does. Instead of taking it 3x's a day "until it goes away" I figured I'd try to just grin and bare it so my liver doesn't give out on me. Usually I avoid doctors at all costs, but this time I've tried to keep on top of it because I'm not so good with pain, especially prologed kind. It is not very encouraging to know that the one time I actually try to help myself out a little bit by seeking medical help I'm left high and dry. So, I've resorted to heat and bitching. The heat helps for a little bit, but other than that I've been SOL.
Natural light setup at clients home
Someone wanted to know what I do in "studio" situations. I don't do it often, but when a backdrop is needed this is usually my setup, simple, easy and effective! I don't use any lights or reflectors or anything, only the available light (usually from windows). I was lucky, this clients house was PERFECT for what she wanted. Hardwood floors, big window and a lot of room to move!

Villa Borghese Gardens - Quercus suber, commonly called the Cork Oak, is a medium-sized, evergreen oak tree in the section Quercus sect. Cerris. It is the primary source of cork for wine bottle stoppers and other uses, such as cork flooring. It is native to southwest Europe and northwest Africa.
It grows to up to 20 m, although it is typically more stunted in its native environment. The leaves are 4 to 7 cm long, weakly lobed or coarsely toothed, dark green above, paler beneath, with the leaf margins often downcurved. The acorns are 2 to 3 cm long, in a deep cup fringed with elongated scales.
Natural stands of Cork Oak can support diverse ecosystems. For example, in parts of northwestern North Africa, some Cork Oak forests are habitat to the endangered Barbary Macaque, Macaca sylvanus, a species whose habitat is fragmented and whose range was prehistorically much wider. In Western Europe, namely in Portugal and Spain, the Cork Oak forests are home to endangered species such as the Iberian Lynx, the most critically threatened feline in the world. The tree has a thick, insulating bark that may have been the Cork Oak's evolutionary answer to forest fires. After a fire, while many of the other tree species merely regenerate from seeds (as, for example, the Maritime Pine) or resprout from the base of the tree (as, for example, the Holm Oak) the Cork Oak branches, protected by cork, quickly resprout and recompose the tree canopy. The quick regeneration of the tree seems to be an advantage compared to other species that, after a fire, return to an initial stage of development.
The tree forms a thick, rugged bark containing high levels of suberin. Over time the cork cambium layer of bark can develop considerable thickness and can be harvested every 9 to 12 years to produce cork. The harvesting of cork does not harm the tree, in fact, no trees are cut down during the harvesting process. Only the bark is extracted, and a new layer of cork regrows, making it a renewable resource. The tree is cultivated in Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Morocco, France, Italy and Tunisia. Cork Oaks are considered to be soil builders and their fruits have been shown to have useful insecticidal properties. Cork Oak forests cover approximately 25,000 square kilometres in those countries (equivalent to 2,277,700 hectares). Portugal accounts for around 50% of the world cork harvest. Cork Oaks cannot legally be cut down in Portugal, except for forest management felling of old, unproductive trees, and, even in those cases, farmers need special permission from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Cork Oaks live about 150 to 250 years. Virgin cork (or 'male' cork) is the first cork cut from generally 25-year-old trees. Another 9 to 12 years is required for the second harvest, and a tree can be harvested about twelve times in its lifetime. Cork harvesting is done entirely without machinery, being dependent solely on human labor. Usually five people are required to harvest the tree's bark, using a small axe. The process requires training due to the skill required to harvest bark without harming the tree. The European cork industry produces 300,000 tonnes of cork a year, with a value of €1.5 billion and employing 30,000 people. Wine corks represent 15% of cork usage by weight but 66% of revenues.
Cork Oaks are sometimes planted as individual trees, providing a minor income to their owners. The tree is also sometimes cultivated for ornament. Hybrids with Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris) are regular, both in the wild in southwest Europe and in cultivation; the hybrid is known as Lucombe Oak Quercus ? hispanica. Some cork is also produced in eastern Asia from the related Chinese Cork Oak (Quercus variabilis)

Practical Guide to Laying Floors
Many people dream of replacing the carpets in their home with modern, stylish flooring such as wood or ceramic tiles, but they are put off by the perceived expense and complexity. It is certainly very important to get good advice before replacing tiles, as flooring can change the look of a room dramatically and it is important to ensure that the flooring material chosen suits the room's purpose as well as your budget. This guide gives you all the information you need to select the right material for your new floor: how to match it with your existing decor and, most importantly, how to lay it to ensure a perfect finish.

I spent the better part of my Saturday hand scrubbing the floor with some Degreaser from Home Depot. It doesn't look as good as I had hoped, but I suspect the degreaser did it's job anyway. It's just one step on the way to the Epoxy Floor.
Right Shoulder and wrist are going to be really sore tomorrow :)
I spent the better part of my saturday degreasing the floor by hand with some degreaser from Home Depot. It didn't come out visually as good as I would have hoped, but the real purpose of this step is not to make it look pretty anyway so, ah well :) In any event, it does look a lot better.
I also used a Medal scraper to remove any debris from the floor as I went, so it really took quite a while.
My right wrist and shoulder are going to be really sore tomorrow (ugh)

Project 1.5 Living Room- Floor Plan
Mark- 39/40
In general the tutor thought these were good, but wanted to mention some minor points....
- Please try to achieve the same level of thickness around the room
- The door leaf should be attached to the corner of the architrave, not the nib that stops the door inside teh door frame.
- There are some unexplained elements in the room on the plan, such as radiators and other items.
- If there are pairs of armchairs, side tables etc. you can use the same letter for the key.
-When you analyse the traffic flow also pay attention to the flow within the room, between the various pieces of furniture to make sure the layout works in terms of ergonomics and proxemics.

The first Ray Sharp detective thriller, set in Asia and based on true stories.
Introducing Ray Sharp, American expatriate journalist, detective, confused human being just trying to do at least a little something right in the world. Helping out the brother of a colleague, Ray gets tangled up in the sleazy and deadly world of the Russian white slave trade. Based on a true story, the action moves from Hong Kong to Macau to an island brothel run ty the Chinese Navy in the South China Sea and finally to its conclusion in Vladivostok in Russia's wild far east.
"The Living Room of the Dead is a well-written suspenseful, enthralling, and very uncomfortable book to read... Not a cheerful book, but a compelling book. Gritty and violent, difficult to put down even in the ugly parts. A fine first novel inspired by a true story." - PJ Coldren, Crimespree magazine.
"The author gives the readers descriptions of HOng Kong, Macau and Vladivostok on a par with Paul Theroux's travel pieces...a successful debut." - Bernard Trink, Bangkok Post
“It's enjoyable, all the more so for plotting that is a bit close to the edge sometimes. It's all very "noir", filled with introspection, editorial asides, snide commentary and swearing (impressively in at least three languages.) [Stone] can actually write: the pages turn very quickly.” - Peter Gordon, Asian Review of Books.
“I was taken for a ride through a slime pit of horrors that had me turning the pages. A very interesting debut. Not for the faint of heart.” - Sally Owen, Bookaholic.
"The Living Room of the Dead is a stylish, fresh take on classic noir themes. You won't soon forget Eric Stone's vivid depictions of Macau and Vladivostok -- or the sad, doomed characters who think they're simply passing through." - Laura Lippman
"Auspicious debut thriller by a former journalist who knows the exotic locales whereof he writes: the story is original and compelling, a page-turner with the spare, relentless style of Dennis Lehane or Michael Connelly." - John Farris

Palm Springs Modern: Houses in the California Desert
Palm Springs is famous as a mecca for the international jet set. But the city has also attracted its share of eccentrics and mavericks who have left an architectural legacy that remains unsurpassed for its originality and international influence. Palm Springs Modern examines the impact that architects and designers have had on the desert oasis, primarily from the 1940s to the 1960s, when they created one of the most important concentrations of modernist architecture in the world.
Palm Springs came into its own architecturally after the war when it became a haven for such modernists as Richard Neutra, who was already practicing the International Style in Los Angeles. Many other distinguished architects have left distinctive marks in the desert: Albert Frey, John Lautner, E. Stewart Williams, William Cody, John Porter Clark, and Craig Ellwood. Palm Springs Modern features examples of mid-century modernism at its most glamorous, some of them the residences of prominent figures who commissioned weekend getaways in the desert including Frank Sinatra, Walter Annenberg, and Raymond Loewy. Adele Cygelman's insightful text, a foreword by architectural historian Joseph Rosa, contemporary color photography by David Glomb, and the celebrated archival black-and-white work of Julius Shulman all capture the distinctly modern allure of America's famed desert playground.
When designers such as Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Albert Frey came together with members of the Hollywood elite like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Lucille Ball, they produced luxury homes nestled in bouldered hills and vacation estates located along green fairways. Palm Springs Modern documents this 40-year architectural explosion in the California desert.
One of the more dramatic collaborations was between Los Angeles architect Quincy Jones and billionaire Walter Annenberg, erstwhile publisher and ambassador to Britain under Richard Nixon. Annenberg and his wife, Lee, commissioned the Rancho Mirage Estate house with the express purpose of entertaining such heavyweights as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Ronald Reagan. Jones envisioned water and green grass on the outside--"I don't want to see one grain of sand except in the golf traps"--and an interior sympathetic to the Annenbergs' collection of impressionist art and oriental antiques. Near the end of the two-year project, Lee asked that the Japanese- and Mayan-inspired pyramidal roof be pink. So it was that pink became the signature hue of the Annenbergs' fabulous Rancho Mirage home.
Using many of the same general principles Jones employed--an open floor plan and the integration of the interior and exterior spaces--Donald Wexler and Ric Harrison's Steel Development Houses represent a very different perspective. Built almost entirely of steel, concrete, and glass, these 1,400-square-foot houses cost between $13,000 and $17,000 in 1962 and could be built in three days. They are minimal in design, aside from the butterfly ceilings, and are incredibly energy efficient. By using steel instead of wood, the buildings are expected to last for many, many years with little or no maintenance. Who would have guessed that the Bauhaus principles, which originated in Germany with Walter Gropius, would find their way to the California desert?
Author Adele Cygelman offers a succinct history beginning with the rise of desert modernity in the 1930s through to its fall from grace in the early 1970s. The photographs by David Glomb are spectacular. All together, Palm Springs Modern is a tantalizing feast of some of the very best mid-century domestic design. --Loren E. Baldwin

Upper two floors of old Mineral Springs Hotel on south side of public square in Paoli, Indiana. Although ground floor is used as a restaurant, the upper floors have not been used for at least 40 years. I have always admired the symmerty and style of the building.

LAYING ADHESIVE FLOOR TILES : LAYING ADHESIVE

- (Floor tile) A ceramic, glazed or unglazed paver, quarry or mosaic tile resistant to abrasion and impact.
- Glazed or unglazed or natural stone tiles of sufficient strength, impact and abrasion resistance to withstand the weight and wear of foot traffic.
- adhesive material: a substance that unites or bonds surfaces together
- (adhesiveness) the property of sticking together (as of glue and wood) or the joining of surfaces of different composition; "the mutual adhesiveness of cells"; "a heated hydraulic press was required for adhesion"
- Able to stick fast to a surface or object; sticky
- tending to adhere
- Prevent (something) from rising off the ground
- the production of eggs (especially in birds)
- Put down, esp. gently or carefully
- (lay) ballad: a narrative song with a recurrent refrain
- Put down and set in position for use
- (laid) set down according to a plan:"a carefully laid table with places set for four people"; "stones laid in a pattern"
Laying the first few rows of tile
The adhesive took a little getting use to when putting it down on the concrete board. It was a little bit heavier and thicker than I anticipated so it took some effort to apply it just right....well, as right as someone without experience can judge.
We bought these nifty spacers that you either place along the sides of the tiles or at the corners to keep the tiles properly spaced and square. I think that $3 spent really paid off.
I also forgot how much this flooring work kills my knees and back so after laying the first 2 rows I grabbed rolling garden stool which helped a bit.
day8 floor
Apparently flooring adhesive goes off so quickly that you don't get time to cut tiles, so the standard way of laying them is to do the easy middle bit first where there are no cuts, and then come back later and do the edges.
