Day 121 - Lazy bitch.

Hey! You're a lazy bitch, but you...

Yeah. Not even going to finish that.

Half of the reason I haven't replied to anything is because I've been either busy with life or in agonizing pain. Half of it is because I'm kind of lazy. I don't like replying to a few comments at a time, I have to sit down and do them all at once or else I lose track of what I've replied, etc.

Don't even get me started on Flickrmail. I really don't know why I don't reply to them. I read all of them. And then I skip off to something more exciting and think "K, I'll reply to that in a minute..." and then I get sidetracked. I would not be offended if any of you stopped commenting/sending me messages. But I would be sad. :(

I promise I'll do better. My dad leaves for TDY on Monday and as horrible as it sounds, I cannot wait. It'll be nice to relax and not have to feel on edge all day.

AHAHAHA! I almost got my little brother to eat a dead spider just now. He was totally going to do it. I was screaming "DO ITTTT!" but my mom said no. :( [/random]

Anyway...dad leaving town....oh! I'm having issues with my doctor, I might make a friends only post on it later, basically...uh, he's a moron.

I went in Wednesday for my sinus problems and he FINALLY reffered me to an ENT specialist so that's GOOD. I told him I thought my navel piercing was infected and he said he'll have a look at it...I lifted my shirt, he GLANCED at it and said "It's fine."

"Are you sure? I don't need antibiotics?"

"Nah. Just keep cleaning it."

"Really? Because IT'S LEAKING NEON YELLOW PUS AND BLOOD!"

GAHHHHH.

I'm so glad my mom was there with me because she never believes me when I tell her that HE DOES NOT LISTEN TO ME! Plus I'm having issues with my pain medication again and I just can't deal with his idiocy anymore. It's fucking ridiculous. My mom finally agreed to help me look for a new doctor. Yay!

And now I'm going to go eat some yummy yellow pills so my back will stop feeling like it's being stabbed repeatedly with a pitchfork. :D

Dinner: June 18

OK, so I did it. Raced home from the gym, bought stuff at Bi-Rite, and whipped up my special recipe of Turkey Chile.

I really don't know how other people cook meals every night for themselves. I stand in awe of y'all. Maybe I just have too much on my plate otherwise, so to speak, and the thought of cooking and cleaning is too overwhelming. Hence the eating out.

I'm game, however, for changing this mindset. By hook or by crook, I will change my habits....

Turkey Chile

First, I cooked up onions, garlic, and red peppers. Seasoned with salt and pepper. I put that in a big pot, and added two cans of stewed tomatoes, and a can each of black beans and kidney beans. The special secret here is adding a few squares of dark chocolate.

Then I cooked up the Turkey, added some honey and cayenne pepper (though admittedly, not enough), drained the fat, and added it to the stew pot. Heating everything up took a few minutes. I finished it off with some shredded cheddar and a dollop of sour cream.

Enjoyed while reading a back issue of my roommates "Dwell" magazine. Lost in reveries about my very own treehouse...

Rock Hudson has never been better than as the hard-headed newsman with a romantic soft spot for a team of gypsy fliers--especially the sexy parachute-jumping Dorothy Malone--in Douglas Sirk's adaptation of William Faulkner's Pylon. It's the Depression, and the volatile little family--disillusioned World War I ace Robert Stack; his doting wife Malone; his sad, lovesick mechanic Jack Carson; and Stack's hero-worshipping son--has landed in New Orleans for a Mardi Gras air show. Stack's mania for flying ("I need to fly, just like an alcoholic needs his drink!") keeps him at arm's length from his loving family, and he even sacrifices his wife's virtue for a shot at piloting his archrival's spare plane, but his brittle emotional armor cracks in a stunning moment of redemption. Douglas Sirk trades his vivid Technicolor palette for shadowy black-and-white CinemaScope (the gorgeous widescreen compositions are tragically lost on pan-and-scan video) to create a dark, desperate vision of the Depression, where deadened souls wait for the next spectacular crash as fliers recklessly race around pylons. Sirk heightens the alienation with the most stylized shooting of his career: cameras peer through transom windows, shadows slash through scenes, and grotesque Mardi Gras costumes wander through almost every scene. This production is considered by many, including Faulkner himself, to be the best adaptation of the author's work, and it remains Sirk's most bleakly beautiful film. --Sean Axmaker

The Oracle by Westclox

Model S6-E, 1947-1950. Amber glass and brass post-war restyling of the blue and chrome Andover model from 1938-1940. Clock was non-working when it arrived, but all it took to get it going again was a little wipe down of the motor to remove the old, dried oil and then a drop or two of fresh oil. The metal parts were suffering from some tarnish and mild corrosion. I stripped off the old lacquer coating, polished and re-lacquered the pieces, and also cleaned both the clear glass front and yellow glass back.

We bought more solid wood doors from the Restore. They're about 100
years old. One had the original hardware which is probably worth twice
what we paid for the door. It's really tarnished, but I'm cleaning it
with steel wool, vinegar, brass polish and Goof Off. The combination
of all those things is working. I think I need to seal it with
polyurethane to keep it bright. Need to investigate that. Any advice
is appreciated.

I've converted from PC :P...my first Mac!!

(oops, I shud have cleaned the screen a bit before)

My other laptop (PC) that was relatively new, got stolen when I was at the library....I was quite upset when it happened.

Then I decided to try out the Mac because I always hear mixed reviews about them and I was never able to judge since I've never used one before.

Wow, let me say that this has been one of the best investment I've made in years. I really wish I had been using a Mac from the beginning.

Anyway, this is my new MacBook. :) and i Love it!

A long part of the way goes slowly on a bevel upwards. We were told from a historian that this way was rebuild in the same way like it has been in original.

The Frauenkirche was built as a Lutheran (Protestant) cathedral, even though Saxony's elector, Frederick August I (1670-1733), was Catholic.
The original baroque church was built between 1726 and 1743 and was designed by Dresden's city architect George Bahr (1666-1738), one of the greatest masters of German Baroque style, who did not live to see the completion of his greatest work. Bahr's distinctive design for the church captured the new spirit of the Protestant liturgy by placing the altar, chancel, and baptismal font directly centered in view of the entire congregation.
In 1736, famed organ maker Gottfried Silbermann (1683-1753) built a three-manual, 43-stop instrument for the church. The organ was dedicated on 25 November and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) gave a recital on the instrument on 1 December.
The church's most distinctive feature was its unconventional 314-foot-high dome, called die Steinerne Glocke or "Stone Bell". An engineering triumph comparable to Michelangelo's dome for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the Frauenkirche's 12,000-ton sandstone dome soared skyward with no internal supports. Despite initial doubts, the dome proved to be extremely stable. Witnesses in 1760 said that the dome had been hit by more than 100 cannonballs fired by the Prussian army led by Friedrich II during the Seven Years' War. The shells simply bounced off and the church survived.
The completed church gave the city of Dresden a distinctive silhouette, captured in famous paintings (see above) by Bernado Bellotto, a nephew to the artist Canaletto and also known by the same name.
In 1849 the church was at the heart of the revolutionary disturbances known as the May Uprising. The Frauenkirche was surrounded by barricades, and fierce fighting raged for days before those rebels who had not already fled were rounded up in the church and arrested.
For more than 200 years, the magnificent bell-shaped dome stood monumentally and gracefully over the skyline of old Dresden, dominating the city.
On 13 February 1945, Anglo-American allied forces began the bombing of Dresden. The church impressively survived two days and nights of the attacks and the eight interior sandstone pillars supporting the colossal dome held up long enough for the evacuation of 300 people who had sought shelter in the church crypt, before succumbing to the heat generated by some 650,000 incendiary bombs that were dropped on the city. The temperature surrounding and inside the church eventually reached 1,000 degrees Celsius. The dome finally collapsed at 10 a.m. on 15 February. The pillars glowed bright red and exploded; the outer walls shattered and nearly 6,000 tons of stone plunged to earth, penetrating the massive floor as it fell.
The altar, a relief depiction of Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives by Johann Christian Feige, was only partially damaged during the bombing raid and fire that destroyed the church. The altar and the structure behind it, the chancel, were among the remnants left standing. Features of most of the figures were lopped off by falling debris and the fragments lay under the rubble.
The building vanished from Dresden's skyline, and the blackened stones would lie in wait in a pile in the center of the city for the next 45 years as Communist rule enveloped what was now East Germany. Shortly after the end of World War II, residents of Dresden had already begun salvaging unique stone fragments from the Frauenkirche and numbering them for future use in reconstruction. Popular sentiment discouraged the authorities from clearing the ruins away to make a parking lot.
In 1982, the ruins began to be the site of a peace movement combined with popular peaceful protests against the East German regime. On the anniversary of the bombing, 400 Dresdeners came to the ruins in silence with flowers and candles, part of a growing East German civil rights movement. By 1989, the number of protesters in Dresden, Leipzig and other parts of East Germany had increased to tens of thousands, and the wall dividing East and West Germany toppled. This opened the way to the reunification of Germany.
There had already been intentions to rebuild the church during the last months of World War II. However, due to political circumstances in the GDR, the reconstruction later came to a halt. The heap of ruins was conserved as a war memorial within the inner city of Dresden, as a direct counterpart to the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed by German

Owls have spectacular binocular vision allowing them to pinpoint prey and see in low light. The eyes of Great Horned Owls are nearly as large as those of humans and are immobile within their circular bone sockets. Instead of turning their eyes, they turn their heads. Therefore, their neck must be able to turn a full 270 degrees in order to see in other directions without moving its entire body.

An owl's hearing is as good – if not better – than its vision; they have better depth perception and better perception of sound elevation (up-down direction) than humans. This is due to owl ears not being placed in the same position on either side of their head: the right ear is typically set higher in the skull and at a slightly different angle. By tilting or turning its head until the sound is the same in each ear, an owl can pinpoint both the horizontal and vertical direction of a sound.

These birds hunt at night by waiting on a high perch and swooping down on prey. They also have 500 pounds per square inch of crushing power in their talons. An average adult human male has about 60 pounds per square inch in his hands. In northern regions, where larger prey that cannot be eaten quickly are most prevalent, they may let uneaten food freeze and then thaw it out later using their own body heat.

This poor skirt had been sitting on the dryer for nearly a year now after I spilled something on it. I kept meaning to take it to the cleaners...I pass right by one on the way to work even. But finally I took a good look at the fabric content and decided to wash it like normal. I was everything in cold water and use a drying rack anyhow. All went well, though it still had a slight stain that I didn't notice until I got to work. One more washing later and it's good as new.

Instead of a box-shaped machine, Jan Semerak’s vision resembles a robotic eyestalk. “Maglevus” is a washing machine that uses ultrasound to clean clothes and a levitating drum that washes clothes based on weight rather than using standard cycles. This not only improves the performance, (6 kg of laundry is done in ten minutes), but far less energy is consumed than regular washing machines.

Araldite 2014 is being used (I called the manufacturer, and that's what they recommended), and seems to work. Inwater tests will come later and prove or disprove the design. Hopefully it works out as the glue costs some 100Euro.

I let the glue dry for a period of 24h before removing the clamp. Since I only have one that's long enough, its taking a while to make 5 canisters.

I sometimes wonder what kind of person would intentionally discriminate against a fellow human being based on whatever mindset the offender may or may not possess. Let me share with you a story…

I got a lucky break this past weekend and found myself in a region of the country not to far from some Marshallese friends who have relocated here in America. I asked for and was approved through my employer to leave for the weekend. I rented a car and drove four hours north to see some of my Marshallese friends - most of whom, are pictured here throughout my stream.

It was a nice break! I spent my time playing basketball, eating out and enjoying the company of my friends. Saturday I heard some of these friends talking about the youth center. The parents or guardians of these teens couldn’t afford to pay for a membership so the kids always either walked by or looked on from afar wishing they could go inside and play basketball. That same Saturday afternoon I brought five Marshallese youth with me into the this youth center with the intent of buying them all year long memberships.

I walked in first and a few seconds later the group of Marshallese youth followed - one carrying a basketball. By this time I was near the front counter when all of a sudden the white man behind the desk suddenly screams, “NOOO” while pointing to my friends. I look at the guy and ask him what the problem is and he asks me if I know the kids. I tell him yes I do and they are with me. I’m then told by this guy that the kids don’t have memberships and that they will have to leave. I’m a bit confused at this point due to the fact that the kids hadn’t walked more than a few steps into the youth center without this man behind the counter screaming at them.

I tell the man that the kids are with me and that I am here to buy them memberships for the remainder of this year and the next. The man looks at me confused for a few seconds and then states, “well, they will not be able to use this place for the rest of the year because it is fully booked with teams on basketball and volleyball leagues.” Trying my best to hide my anger by this point I ask the man, “so you are telling me that if I buy these kids memberships to this youth center they will not be able to come inside because for every day for every hour this place will be open for the remainder of the year it will be used for something else?” “Yes, that is correct.” the man replies.

By this time the kids are upset, scared and feeling very uncomfortable. We are speaking Marshallese and the kids are telling me they want to leave and not to worry about getting them memberships. Lucky for this man behind the counter I was with the kids! I DO NOT drink around the kids, fight around them or engage in any kind of argument with another adult in their presence. I looked the man in the eyes and told him to have a nice day as I walked out with the kids. Secretly, though, I was wishing I could walk back in there and give this man the beating of his racist life!

In the car I am talking to the kids and they tell me it is not important that they have a membership. I apologize to them and tell them that if it is the last thing I do in life, I will get them a membership to this youth center. I was really upset and really wanting to go in there and hurt the man behind the counter - but I knew this violent action would solve nothing. I’ll tell you, though, I have no idea how Martin Luther King or Gandhi or others of the like remained so peaceful throughout their struggles. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the likes of these men! The world needs more like them - sadly, I’m not one to fit into their ranks, for I’d rather pick up a weapon…

But anyway, we ended up going to their high school to play basketball. We all had a good time - even though my age and out of shape-ness showed at much laughter of those poking fun! LOL! I loved every second of it, though! I managed to hold my own even if I was gasping for breath every break. Hell, I’m still sore as hell just typing this story out! LOL….

By the end of the day it seemed like the boys had forgotten about the incident at the youth center. Later that night I overheard a few talking about it and they all were angry and sad about the whole thing. One even stated he didn’t like “Ri-belle” or, white Americans. I prayed that night to myself….

Yesterday I was back in my hotel and decided to call this youth center and pretend I was a new arrival to the city with five kids of my own. A woman answered the phone and I asked the same exact questions I asked the white man behind the counter in person on Saturday. Every response I got from this woman was the total opposite of the man’s to include the price per child which was half of what the man quoted me in person as I looked him in the eyes.

This is a reproduction of and old photograph I had originally shot on Kodak Ektar 25.Arguably the best color negative film Kodak ever made.It was slow ,color reproduction was dead on and had virtually no grain. It was a darkroom enthusiasts dream , you could push it 2 1/2 stops and pull it 2 stops in processing alone , plus the 7 stops of film latitude, you could do wonders with this film.

A little history .

Originally this was shot using a travel studio lighting setup using a Speedotron D402 kit 400 watts of very clean light.. That much hasn't changed. The main light was a Chimera medium softbox AS the background.The foreground light came from 2 large fill cards. I shot the scene with a Bronica ETRS with a 150 mm lens . Worked out pretty well back then . It was a straight on shot with no liquid then. I sold hundreds of the photograph.

Digital changed all of that , with the original setup , I was constantly getting way to much flair , maybe a real testament to Ektar 25. So out of necessity I had to change things up a bit.

Here is what I did and what I used :

Nikon D90
Nikkor 18-105 zoom kit lens. Yeah I know but I like the versatility of the lens.
Lighting: Speedotron brownline D402 with 2 M90 heads set at half power asymmetrically.
Background (main light) Bare bulb with reflector. 100 watt seconds
Fill: 2 foam core flags with 2 sheets of printer paper to control the specular highlights. 50 watt seconds.
( I was lighting close in my very small living room) I didn't need high watts per second.
2 sheets of white foam core , 1 sheet of plexiglass , 4 sheets of printer paper to blend the background/foreground ,and the Peppers.
Triggered by an old Quantum Radio Slave 4
Trengove Studios aqua gel.
POST was done minimally in Adobe Lightroom 2.5.Mostly for the graduation in the bottom .The border comes from Paint Shop Pro X2.

Cornwall 365 - Day 63

I’m still late uploading these, this one is for Tuesday and the tin mine miniature ornament was taken on Tuesday, then I added it to the Cornish landscape background which is an old image. The day was pretty much the same as other days spent at home trying to catch up on things. I had created two masters for my Christmas cards, or rather 4 masters as each card is printed 2 sides. I printed out an initial specimen of each card and although the text came out okay, none of it was in black as the black printer head is faulty of course, but the photos did not come out as well - from a distance they didn’t look too bad but on closer examination they had lines across them. I tried deep cleaning but that didn’t do any good, I even tried re-aligning the head but the pattern sheet I had to print out to choose the best (most solid) setting from didn’t have a best setting! So now I have 3 options - go ahead and print the cards even if they are not perfect, although they could get worse. Buy a new printer now - I was waiting to see if the prices went down after Christmas. Buy some Christmas cards!
