Silver Dollar Coin Worth
CASH IN THE ATTIC
I found this old jar full of pre decimal coins in the attic last week, along with a few jars of pennies.
Maybe I was saving up for another jar of hair cream......Whoops, too late.
A wee bit of history on these coins.
The larger coin was Known as the "Half Crown" and was two shillings and sixpence or 1/8 of a pound. First introduced as a gold coin in 1526 by Henry the Eighth and changed to silver around 1551 by Edward the Sixth it remained in various guises right up until decimalisation in 1970 when it was no longer produced but still accepted as 12.5 new pence. The Half Crown had the nickname "half a Dollar" which stems from the 1800s when it was roughly convertible to 50c U.S.
The threepenny bit has a similar history, but it was not popular when it was first introduced as people preferred the "Groat" which was worth four pence.
Its popularity waned amongst the English around the turn of the last century but remained strong with the Scots which is why many coins produced in this period bore the Scottish thistle emblem. Oh Fixo was Brylcreems main competition
Here endeth the history lesson, I hope you found it interesting.
1897 Mexico 8 Reales silver coin
1897 Mexico 8 Reales .903 silver coin.
"The Spanish dollar (also known as the piece of eight, the real de a ocho or the eight-real coin) is a silver coin, of approximately 38 mm diameter, worth eight reales, that was minted in the Spanish Empire after a Spanish currency reform in 1497. Its purpose was to correspond to the German thaler. It was the coin upon which the US dollar was based, and it remained legal tender in the United States until the Coinage Act of 1857 discontinued the practice. Because it was widely used in Europe, the Americas, and the Far East, it became the first world currency by the late 18th century. Many existing currencies, such as the Canadian dollar, United States dollar, and the Chinese yuan, as well as currencies in Latin America and the Philippine peso, were initially based on the Spanish dollar and other 8-reales coins."
