Bridal Set

My daughter had a very tight photography budget when she was married last year. I went down to visit yesterday and shot a few images that were not included by her photographer. She had a black & white wedding so she wanted all the shots in b&w. I shot in color and converted. I didn't have my Canon when she was married, but I did shoot background shoots for her and let the professional do the families & wedding. She paid $900.00 for 2 hrs and 100 proofs. I'm sorry that I can't shoot her dress as it has beautiful details, but she has already had it cleaned and vacuum sealed.

Umbrella Pine
Latin: Sciadopitys verticillata

Japanese umbrella pine is a living relic predating the age of the dinosaurs.

That the world is ever changing is not news, but most mere mortals find it difficult to wrap our minds around the notion of change on a geological scale.

During the Triassic period - the age before even dinosaurs had appeared - the land masses of earth looked nothing like they do today. Just as the physical geography has changed, so have the plants that cover the land. A few, such as the Japanese umbrella pine (Sciadopitys verticillata), have survived from those long lost epochs and provide a living link with the really old days.

Japanese umbrella pine is not a pine at all but a coniferous evergreen now classified in its own family (the Sciadopitaceae) with no close relatives amongst now extant plants. It branched off from the trunk of the tree of life sometime around 250 million years ago, and it and its then-numerous relatives succeeded in covering wide swaths of land that was to become in our time Eurasia, northern Europe and the northern reaches of North America.

But as the earth changed, its range and species diversification shrank until today this once successful family is now restricted to just one species growing in cool cloud forests of central Japan between 1,500 and 3,000 feet.

In nature, it grows as a 120-foot tall tree with a tall, unbranched cinnamon red trunk and a topknot of foliage. But, because it’s so slow growing - often making only 6 inches of growth a year - few landscape trees in this country are more than 35 feet tall. These youngsters retain their foliage to the ground in a more or less pyramidal fashion like most conifers.

Umbrella pine - a name probably coined by Francis Parkman during the Civil War - has a whorl of stiff, plastic-like evergreen needles at the ends of each shoot that radiate out and resemble the spokes of a Japanese umbrella. The needles have a top and bottom groove and are 2 to 5 inches long.

Francis Parkman (1823-1893) was an historian living in Boston who’s still remembered today for his lively, firsthand report of his trip on the Oregon Trail in 1846. Gardening was Parkman’s other passion, and it was he who first grew the Japanese umbrella pine outside of Japan. George Hall, a physician turned Oriental trader, sent Parkman a shipment of plants in 1861, including the first Japanese maples grown in this country.

The umbrella pine is one of the “five trees of Kiso,” a selection of five species of coniferous forest giants made during the feudal period and used as plantings around shrines and important sites. One of these umbrella pines has been worshiped locally at the Jinguji Temple in Kyoto Prefecture since 1310.

Japanese umbrella pines are hardy from zones 5 to 7, so are best suited for use in the cooler parts of Arkansas. Light shade from pine trees or afternoon shade is preferable, but they will grow in full sun so long as they remain well watered during summer droughts. They grow best in rich, fertile sites with an acidic soil pH.

Because Japanese umbrella pines are so slow growing, use them as specimens in a rock garden or even as part of the foundation planting. It’s a pricy and unique species, so use it as a prominent specimen.

Desert Pink

This is the same type of the flower I found on the edge of Mount Wilson; San Gabriel; Angela Crest Area..

But this shot is taken @ North Las Vegas residential area. desert garden ground. When the morning you see the desert is just sand everywhere & this flower blooming is just so catchy in the eyes. It just brighten up the garden.

I can never agreed on the environment specialists' that convert the garden into desert without ground cover plants. Being trvaling & study the desert states; I see that in the nature there are many ground cover plants that still can survive in the desert ground.

During the 60's-70's in Asia I have already a activist of "Green" the environment in Asia.

In the 80's I have visited China & witness; how Chinese people converted the desert land; sandy beaches & rocky mountain into the vegetation land.

For example; my dad's home town, there is not any vegetable can grow there because of the Sand storm & the sandy ground. The only vegetable is actually from the sea weeds that the island people consume.

However; with the "Culture Revolutions" that Mao sending the thousand of people to the rural area to plant trees & vegetation plant. Then in the 80's when I return to his home town, I am surprise to find the lust green Big; Medium & small everywhere.

& the people now have the vegetable planted locally for the island consumption.
The people from Taiwan & Japan also involved in helping the island to cultivate the vegetables for export to Japan & South East Asia. Thus the people lives are improved.

During the last few years; when I returned to China, I feel sad that the Blue Sky were not what I can see frequeenlty as in the 80's & early 90's. It is because all those trees & plants that planted earlier along the tracks & roads all gone without re-planting back.

Also the rapid development of the country have not incorporate the "Green" Campaign that Mao initiated. It is very difficult for me to say something on my stand as I am not Mao nor the power influence in this world.

I can just do so much for what I can & need to watch that people would not be offended & eliminate my existance.

Fathers' Day Tribute Bouquet 2011

An annual tradition at NBCC is the "Tribute To The Father Figures In Our Lives." We hand out colored cards at the door and ask everyone to write a brief description of the best lesson taught to them by their Father figure (dad, grandfather, uncle, friend or mentor).

As part of our service, we read aloud each lesson. The array of lessons are always humorous, inspiring and oh so heartwarming. Each card then becomes a part of a colorful bouquet.

June feelings

- Flower = how much of a little hippie I’ve become lately haha. I think to some people that’s not a big deal, but it’s really changed my life.
- Cherry blossoms = I’m DYING to get a massive tattoo of cherry blossoms around my left arm one of these days. One of its many meanings is how quickly time passes/the fleeting of time, since cherry blossoms are only in bloom for a short time. I’d really been feeling that lately, with the semester ending and me graduating. Seems like I was only in highschool a couple of years ago, but I graduated in 2005. So weird.
- Hearts = the one with the question mark is because I was interested in two guys right now and I didn’t know who to choose. Guy 1 likes me, but I like him way more, and he says he’s “not emotionally ready” for a girlfriend, but “we’ll see what happens”. Guy 2 is head over heels for me, but he makes me somewhat uneasy with his drinking, and he wants me to go to church with him every Sunday, and that’s not a promise I can keep. Wait or gamble? I don’t know. And the rainbow heart is because I’m bisexual. The little pink dots were just for shits and giggles haha.
- Brownish things near the middle = Haha, the thing in the middle is a vagina. The heart is the clit and the black spot is the hole. I made the heart because I’m wrote a poem that starts “I think with my cunt”. I often have trouble distinguishing between love and lust. The two round brown things are breasts, with hearts for nipples for the same reason as the clit. And I put all of that in this because I seem to be obsessed with sexuality lately, and I don’t know why.
- Lightning bolts pointing to different things = Lighting bolts are symbols for opportunity. I made them red because I want a red lightning bolt tattooed on my left hand. The left lightning bolt is pointing to a leaf, a flower, acupuncture needles, vitamins, and a bottle of essential oil. The right lightning bolt is pointing to paper and pencil. They’re pointing to those because now that I’m graduating, I have to choose what to do in school next, and my two options are alternative medicine and English. I have months to decide but I’ve been thinking about it quite a lot after taking my alternative medicine class.
- Girl = me! Since I dyed my hair dark, I feel different in some way. Not sure what. I know it’s a good different though. And I made my eyes lopsided because I tend to see things much different from most other people =]
- Black circles = those are supposed to be my gauges. I had plugs that are those fancy-ish kind, black metal with diamond-y-looking jewels around them. I put those shine lines around them because I feel like my gauges are the only thing the separates me from the normal people I’m always around. I’m dying to get more tattoos and piercings, but I still live at home and my parents won’t allow it, so I only have two holes in each ear, one pair of which is gauged to 7/16". I know if I got all the tats and piercings that I wanted, I’d really feel different and like I stand out in a crowd. I know a lot of people have tats and piercings too, but mine are different and unique, and I’ve designed some that are truly original. But unfortunately, I’m poor and living with Mormon parents haha.
- The yellow background is just because it’s a cheerful color, and I’m pretty cheerful lately =]

My Tarte ŕ la Provençale - with a special tomato sauce!

I made up this recipe for a quickly prepared dinner last night.

Correction – it’s quicker if you prepare the tomato sauce for the base in advance. The sauce is made extra special and authentic by adding a touch of lavender#. See the recipe below.

You’ll need half a 397 g pack of puff pastry and a 28 cm loose-bottomed tart pan or porcelain baking dish.

Garlic Tomato Sauce with Herbes de Provence
Gently saute a small finely chopped onion in 30 ml extra virgin olive oil for a few minutes, stirring frequently, over med-high heat. Add 4 large, finely sliced garlic cloves and about 15 ml dried herbs [a mixture of summer savory*, thyme, fennel, rosemary, marjoram, and a touch of lavender#]. Saute until transparent and just starting to colour. Add a 796 ml tin of chopped tomatoes, slightly drained, half a cube chicken stock [I like Aurora or Knorr], and lots of freshly ground pepper. Bring to a boil and simmer until thick [if the sauce is too wet, the pastry won’t cook properly!]. Add a little sea salt to taste.

* the herb summer savory is related to thyme and rosemary.

#lavender gets its name from the Latin word "lavare", and means to wash. Lavender is used extensively in cooking, and was used in Roman times to flavour jellies and sweets. Its sweet, floral flavour, with lemon and citrus notes, adds a wonderful touch to both sweet and savoury dishes. Flowers and leaves can be used fresh, and both buds and stems can be used dried [however, do not use lavender purchased in nurseries as it has probably been sprayed with pesticides].

This is the completed 'floor' for my Petite Properties' Mulberry House in 1:48th scale. It's a three-storey house in the georgian style and the kit comes with MDF pieces for the carcass of the house, and instructions to make all the internal fittings like the staircase and doors etc. I wasn't keen on the black and white tiled floor paper which came as part of the kit so I photoshopped my own Victorian tiled floor, cranked up the colour saturation and printed onto matt photo paper.
The next step is the other floors which are meant to be plain dark floorboards... can I do better? We shall have to see.

Made from 100% light gray wool, this purse was hand knit, then agitated with soap and hot water to make the wool fibers tighten up and give the material more structure. After shaping and drying the fabric, a large red flower was needle felted by hand on the front of the purse.
