My new Schwinn Voyageur.

My new Schwinn Voyageur.

After a couple months of part-time Craiglist searching, I found exactly what I was looking for: a mid-level 80s touring frame. This one even has canti-brake posts, which I considered desirable but not essential.

This Schwinn is from Japan (likely Panasonic built), built of Tange Champion (not the best or the worst. Not the best and not the worst translates into: DURABLE but not HEAVY) and appears to be fully chromed under the paint for added rust protection. Not sure what year it's from -- I guessed later 80s, but a quick perusal of Schwinn lightweight catalogs 85-89 turned up nothing. Maybe very early 90s? Tange dropouts on the fork, Suntour on the rear. It even has bottle mounts under the downtube. This frame is nicer than I thought it would be based on the blurry CL photos.

The buildout is going to be my usual mix of old, but cheap and good, Japanese components -- in this case, all of the nice Deore LX stuff off the 92 Bstone MB-3 this frame is replacing. Putting the trusty ol' (but recently tragically unused) 7 rail CETMA rack on. Going to try out the riser bar this time rather than the Nitto Promenade I've been using on and off for the past few years. Hopefully the riser will make it easier to go on medium length rides -- I'm envisioning a rainy winter bike-hike to the De Leo Wall with my stove and some miso soup -- those kinds of rides.

Now the hunt is on for a decent, cheap 700c wheelset. An excuse as good as any to ride out to Bikeworks in Columbia City tomorrow...

Post Script: I missed this frame on my first review of the catalogs. It is almost certainly the 1984 Voyageur in the "Warm Grey" color.

Drivetrain Upgrade: Old and New

Drivetrain Upgrade: Old and New

Time for a new project: Replace the bike's drivetrain. The bottom bracket for the old cranks was dead and the crankset/chainrings were never all that great. I got a new FSA set at a good price. A bit "blingy" for my taste, but nothing that a coating of dust won't cure.

For an idea of what the old components looked like on the bike, see pictures from brake overhaul project, as I didn't think to take any before yesterday's upgrade started.

THE EXCELSIOR MOTORCYCLE. 250cc TWO STROKE TWIN. UK

THE EXCELSIOR MOTORCYCLE. 250cc TWO STROKE TWIN. UK

Probably a late 1950s or early 60s model Talisman.

Excelsior, based in Coventry, was a British bicycle, motorcycle and car maker. They were Britain’s first motorcycle manufacturer, starting production of their own ‘motor-bicycle’ in 1896. Initially they had premises at Lower Ford Street, Coventry, and 287-295 Stoney Stanton Road, Hillfields, Coventry, Warwickshire before moving to Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham in 1921.

Originally a bicycle company making penny-farthings in 1874 under their original name: Bayliss, Thomas and Co, they later sold bicycles under the names of Excelsior and Eureka and changed the company name to Excelsior Motor Co. in 1910. In the early years of motor-bicycle manufacture they used Minerva, De Dion, MMC and possibly a Condor 850 cc single but went on to produce a wide range of machines with engines from most major manufacturers. In 1914, they offered a JAP-powered twin. A deal to supply the Russian Imperial government with motorcycles ended with the Revolution and Excelsior wound up with an excess inventory as a result.

The Walker family (father Reginald and son Eric) took over after World War I. R Walker & Sons of Tyseley, Birmingham had started as makers of ships lamps but in 1919 had made a range of motorcycles under the Monarch name to be sold by the London Department store Gamages. The company was re-registered as the Excelsior Motor Company Ltd, production moved to Birmingham and the Lower Ford Street factory in Coventry sold to Francis-Barnett.[1] They made a range of motorcycles from 98 to 1,000 cc, mostly powered by JAP, Blackburne and Villiers engines, plus an 850 cc Condor engine. The new company put more effort in competition and racing. To avoid confusion with the American maker of the same name, they called themselves the "British Excelsior".

Post-war

But the company wasn't doing well and in the lean years following World War II racing and luxury machines were sidelined in favour of cheap two-stroke engines. After the war, they used Villiers engines to make the 250 cc Viking and in 1949 the Talisman, a smooth two-stroke with 180-degree crank. A later 328 cc twin-carb sports version did not sell well, although the engine itself achieved some success in Berkeley microcars in both 328 cc twin and 492 cc triple versions

Closure

Excelsior last manufactured a motorcycle in 1964 and folded in 1965. Britax, a car accessory company bought the name and produced limited numbers of Britax-Excelsior machines in the late 1970s.

The head office address was: The Excelsior Motor Co, Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham 11.

Hung Out to Dry

Hung Out to Dry

I knew pretty early on I wanted a red bike! It is a British build, so I decided on Rover 'Flame Red'. Also because you can buy it cheap in Boyes. So, out some the old rattlecan. I strung the bike up on my clothesline in my crappy old yard (at least, yard good for something now).

It is probaby better to use cork to stick into seat tube and top tube and string up bike on cork somehow rather than hang it up by its braze-ons, but I was a bit worried it might fall off teh washing line.

One small can of primer is enough for one coat of paint. The more coats, the better, but there should be at last 24h between each coat, and coats should be applied as thin as possible from 25cm distance. it makes sense to wait for a day when there is no wind, or at least pay attention to the wind direction.

After letting to dry completely, paint is roughened with a bit of 600 sandpaper or steel wool to roughen up the paint and make the next coat stick better. This is the fun bit - all that fun spraypainting.

What I did with my old bike lights

What I did with my old bike lights

I bought this set of Sunlite brand lights back in the summer after getting hit by a car and becoming more serious about bike safety. They were cheap, like $25 for the set, but decent enough lights. The problem was the plastic mounting brackets that broke pretty quickly. I had them jerry-rigged on my bike for a while, but since I got my Planetbike Superflash and my fenix L2D, I now have them jerry-rigged to my helmet.

Some of the coolest bikes show up at the Victoria Garden City Rally's BBQ. Oh. And Mark's Kawasaki was also there (he loaned it to me, but he owes me anyway!). Props to the folks on the ride for understanding about my bringing a "motorcycle" to their rally. They were cool. At least it's a 2-stroke! Sure, OK, it has a couple extra cylinders, though!

LAVERDA 750. ITALIAN FOUR STROKE TWIN.1970s

LAVERDA 750. ITALIAN FOUR STROKE TWIN.1970s

The true birth of Laverda as a serious big bike brand occurred with the introduction of 750 cc; its appearance halted sales of the recently introduced 650. Many of the first bikes were produced for the American market under the brand "American Eagle", which were imported to the US from 1968 until 1969 by Jack McCormack. The 750 was identical to the 650 except for the lower compression and carburettor rejetting. In 1969 the "750 S" and the "750 GT" were born, both equipped with an engine which would truly start the Laverda fame. Both engine and frame were reworked: power was increased to 60 bhp (45 kW) for the S. 3 bikes were entered by the factory at the 1969 Dutch 24 hour endurance race in Oss, the 750S was clearly the fastest bike until piston failure left just one machine to finish fourth. Just like the agricultural machinery made by the other family business, Laverdas were built to be indestructible. The parallel twin cylinder engine featured no less than five main bearings (four crankcase bearings and a needle-roller outrigger bearing in the primary chaincase cover), a duplex cam chain, and a starter motor easily twice as powerful as needed. Of course, this made the engine and subsequently the entire bike heavy, heavier than, say, a Ducati 750 of the same vintage, but they were reliable and stable.
Laverda 750 SFC

The SF evolved to include disc brakes and cast alloy wheels. Developed from the 750S road bike was the 750 SFC (super freni competizione), a half-faired racer that was developed to win endurance events like the Oss 24 hours, Barcelona 24 hours and the Bol D'Or at Le Mans. This it did, often placed first, second and third in the same race, and dominating the international endurance race circuit in 1971. Distinguished by its characteristic orange paint which would become the company's race department colour, its smooth aerodynamic fairing and upswept exhaust, the SFC was Laverda's flagship product and best advertisement, flaunting pedigree and the message of durability, quality, and exclusivity. The SFC "Series 15,000" was featured in the Guggenheim Museum in New York's 1999 exhibit The Art of the Motorcycle as one of the most iconic bikes of the 1970s

Laverda is an Italian manufacturer of Combine harvesters and a past manufacturer of high performance motorcycles. The agricultural equipment brand is famous for quality, simplicity, and efficiency; while the motorcycles in their day gained a reputation for being robust and innovative.

The Laverda brand was absorbed by Piaggio, when in 2004, Piaggio absorbed Aprilia. Since, Piaggio has elected to quietly close all activities related to the Laverda brand, and has publicly stated that they would be willing to sell the rights to the brand if an investor should appear. Currently Laverda.com redirects to Aprilia's website.

Michele Bartoli found his motivation in Paulo Coelho's "The Manual of the Warrior of light" .
The "warrior of light" lives in each and every one of us. It is called forth every time life challenges us, and it offers us the right reasons to look ahead and focus on ambitious goals that may seem unattainable.
Today Michele Bartoli has found the same motivation in Prestigio and has put his experience and skill at the disposal of the company.
Two ambitious protagonists with a single goal: to create a "custom built" frame. The road experience of a true champion, on the one hand, together with the design engineering and the applied technology of Prestigio on the other, have allowed the Bartoli Altair model to be created.
This "custom built" frame has been designed by taking full advantage of the experience of a thirty-year career, it has been tested according to the most complex dynamics, it is built with the craftsmanship of times past and all of its parts are airbrush painted in Italy: 100% Italian! The Bartoli Altair is a wrapped frame with T 1000 tubes finished with technical details with the aim of obtaining maximum rigidity, great stability and absolute reactivity in all riding situations.

21- 52 Biking !!!!!

21- 52 Biking !!!!!

We started biking with Xziva and that went well...... until right after this shot.
i went home and they took a spin around the block. Xziva was scared by a car door slamming and took off. The Springer will release itself if something like that happens. She crossed the road !!!!! and was just missed by a car!
We found her in the middle of a field pfffff and she walked happily home along side the bike. No biking with her for me for a while !!!!!!! We were sooooo lucky !

For all those who are concerned about over exercising her !!!!
We just go around the block, that's about 5 min at the most :) and we let her walk not run !
This is just to get her used to walking beside the bike and to learn to ignore everything around her !!!! In summer we NEVER do this !

Our vet was okay with this and we did this with our last Dane too since she was 12 months and she was fine with it until she was 8 ! Have to say that Xanttha was only 73 cm and weighed only 50 kilo's where Xziva is 84 cm and 57 kilo's.
But you can all rest asured we're not overdoing it :)

Man's Struggle

Man's Struggle

Portland stone relief sculpture (1954-9) in Coventry City Centre by Walter Ritchie, representing 'Man's Struggle to control the World outside himself'

The subjects include man's taming of nature, represented by the wild horse, with scenes from industry as man employs the elements about him. Also alluded to is the need to cope with disabilites, suggested by the woman (complete with contemporary haircut) reading braile in the lower right hand corner.

These panels (there is a companion relief) were originally featured dramatically as a central focus in Coventry's precinct in the late 1950s, situated at either end of a of a long fountain basin with a walkway above them (that left them for the most part in shadow).

This was how I first encountered them as a child in the 1970s, and the dramatic images combined with the roar of rushing water from the fountain captured my imagination and left a lasting impression on me.

In the early 1990s the precinct was modified and the fountain basin and reliefs were swept away (the fountains had been dry for some years before) and the two panels were repositioned adjacent to each other on the end wall of the Herbert Art gallery & Museum a few blocks away where they remain today. They look very striking there with much more daylight falling on them than before, but somehow they look rather tacked on here. I miss their old location, and I can still hear the rushing water of those fountains when I look at them

The subjects include the struggle for enlightenment and the conflict between good and evil, using images from mythological and religious sources (including a graphic representation of evolution, with the primitive humans ascending to the point of becoming angel-like beings!)

"Document some evidence of human ingenuity that would otherwise go unnoticed. Do it without including any humans in the picture" - Michael Wolf.

Two examples of modest ingenuity by cyclists. Keeping the seat dry with a plastic bag and chaining a bike up high due to the lack of floor space. These were down a side street and if anyone noticed either they probably didn't notice both. Like the fact that they're on Helmet Row too.

The Bike Path Killer

the bike path killer

    bike path
  • A path or road for bicycles and not motor vehicles

  • Completed in 1995, formerly an old railroad route between Elyria and Kipton, Ohio, that is popular with Oberlin’s cyclists, joggers, and dog walkers. Stretches 3.2 miles and was incorporated into the Lorain County Metro Park System as part of the North Coast Inland Trail bike path.

  • A path segregated from motorized traffic for the use of bikes, sometimes shared with pedestrians.

  • Segregated cycle facilities are roads, tracks, paths or marked lanes designated for use by cyclists from which motorised traffic is generally excluded.

purbeck Panorama1

purbeck Panorama1

Have been meaning to Cycle more of the Isle of Purbeck. Planned this ride here a couple of weeks back, not knowing it was going to be one of the hottest days of the year. Walk there often but mainly along the beach. Left Misses Thisview and her friend to walk to Swanage and we'd meet up at the end of the day. Had a route in my head from ordanance survey maps but soon discovered that there were so many landmarks to help. Obviously the Sea, then Satellite masts, Isle of Purbeck Golf course, Oil wells and the main one being Ballard Down. A big spine that leads away from the coast to Nine Barrow Down and then Corfe and further. Parked just the other side of Sandbanks and crossed on the chain link ferry to Studland. Headed along the road for a mile or so then turned right onto open sometimes sandy heathland. This dragged up to the Studland to Corfe road. Fantastic views but behind me, will ride this again the other way next time. Along the road for half a mile then left up steep climbs to Nine Barrow Down with 360 degree breathtaking views. Along the ridge then pretty soon Corfe Castle in sight and downhill all the way to Corfe. Up to Corfe, drop down the footpath by the Castle then on the road to Church Knowle, Bradle and Kimmeridge. Pretty lumpy but no killer long climbs. Dropping down to Kimmeridge I can now see the South West Coast path that will start my return. Bike carry up many steep steps and take in the views of the coast. At a high point now and can see the terrain of the big headlands, narrow path and shear drop to certain death on my right. Hammered downhill quicker than Danny Hart, no not really too scary. Quite a few walkers to so took it easy. A couple of bike carry's, the big one being Hounds Tout and down the 176 steps on the other side. Had planned to drink and eat at the top of Hounds Tout only to realise I'd lost my drinks bottle shouldering my bike. Had been sweating for about 3 hours now. Wouldn't find any drinks further along the coast for miles so headed in land to Kingston, there's is a great Pub there. The Scott Arms. Two pints of Lemonade and Orange, then a Lucozade Energy and a bottle of water. On the road back to Swanage then Ulwell and another drink stop, to find a path up Ballard Down and a last push up to the top. At a high point again. Downhill to Old Harrys Rocks. Bit more path then onto the road back to the Ferry. My Garmin locked up during the ride, but guess about 28 miles. Plenty more to discover there on mtb or road bike. I'll be back on a nice chilly day though.

Tlingit Totem Pole

Tlingit Totem Pole

This totem pole is erected further down the bike path. It's a bit of a walk to get here. The sun was starting to go down by the time we got to it.

Alaska Indian Arts, Inc. in Haines, Alaska fashioned the 32 foot toem pole in 1975.

The carvings are the authentic work of Tlingit Indians (Tlingit is pronounced Tuh-lin-git with a hard "g".) [Although I've always heard it K'-lin-git.]

John Hagen, Ed Kasko and Cliff Thomas were the principal carvers of the works of art on red cedar, which are painted in traditional colors once produced with mineral paints.

Originally situated at Pier 48, the totem pole was relocated here in June, 2009.

From top to bottom the totem pole is broken down and explained:

Eagle represents a main clan of the Tlingit tribe.

Brown Bear denotes the great size of Alaska, holding a "Tinnah" or money piece as a symbol of the great wealth of the great land.

Killer Whale portrays tenacity and great strength.

Hawk depicts sharp eyesight and perception of our future.

Grizzly Bear typifies bravery, but holds a Mosquito to warn people all is not easy.

Strong Boy was ridiculed by all as being a dolt and for being lazy. Strong Boy exercised in secret and when his uncle was swallows by a Sea Lion, all the other nephews ran. Strong Boy seized the Sea Lion by the tail and tore it in half, letting his uncle out alive.

17-01-07 1713.jpg

17-01-07 1713.jpg

When I bought my Monster I felt sort of like a bloke waiting for his Stag night, excited at the prospect of what might happen but equally as nervous about what may lay ahead. So 12 months or so past my "Stag night" and the nerves have past and I just get more excited each time I pass a point with my Monster.
In getting back onto bikes after more than a decade of pining for something to have some fun with. I didn't want to over extend myself and having to go back through the licensing program again here in Oz meant I had to be a restricted bike for a short time. My natural choice was a 620 which here does come with the necessary restrictor that can be removed once rider has met the required time on a half Monster.

What did I begin with then, she was a very plain but clean example of a 620. Coming to me in very naked form that being no cowl or bikini and stock as a rock when it comes to modes or bling. I was pointed to the board only after I had taken hold of my "super stock" I didn't really have plans for modes or anything of that nature I just wanted a Monster.....
Well that didn't last very long, after signing up and then meeting fellow riders in Sydney the bug hit and I got to planning what my 620 might become.
Other than a few little items like my first ever purchase being a billet rego label holder I began to search for what is always an important and difficult decision that being what pipes should I buy? I didn't want the regular Termi items that look identical to stock pipes only with more voice, after many a late night and key word searches I decided on Conti style slip-ons that were offered on Oz Monsters trading post. They were very cheap and had a great look, however after much trial and error they just didn't fit, I was guttered and had to start again.
Eventually I found these fantastic MIVV GP rounds in Carbon finish, they are really short compared to stock and without baffles have an amazing voice so much so you'd be hard pressed to know she was only a 620.

That is where it began, by opening up that sweet twin cylinder sound I was hooked and the modes really began. I have to thank a couple of people and suppliers, Bruce at MotoWheels for some gorgeous billet from CycleCat and SpeedyMoto and Paige and PJ for almost the rest of what is bolted to her.
The next biggest mode was the decision to commit and do the chop, I kept coming back to a few bike when it came too the look and they were all chopped. You just can't go past it for really finishing the rear end off (IMHO), I kept putting it off thinking that I'll put on a carbon tail piece but couldn't justify $200+ when lopping off the rear cost less than half that and looks ace. So one morning after having the kit for a few weeks I was up at sparrows fart and thought it was the perfect time to get it done. The mind was not quite awake as yet so it was easy to do it in morning light while I was a bit foggy.
From there I went nuts for a couple of months snapping up items each week and morphing the little 620 into what it has become today. There are little things that change of late, after 12 months of pretty crazy modes and searching for 620 parts which are a bit like hens teeth sometimes she has a pretty deep growl and has yet to bit owner nor others. It has been a trouble free run to get this far.

As for the future, I am planning a bit of paint scheme going old school with stripes and decals.
There are a pair of new forks currently on the way to give her some adjustment on the front end, along with springs and oil to match the weight of the rider.
Maybe some new wheels or at least treatment of the current items.
I have never had fueling issues but there might be a tuning module in the pipeline, just looking for more bottom end.
Then there's always a little more bling, Speedy Moto Triple to name just one.

Bike items:

MIVV GP Carbon slip-ons (round)
Cycle Cat rearsets with low mount hangers
Billet from Ducati-1 (coffin reservoirs, frame plugs, rear brake reservoir)
Speedy Moto belt covers (of sorts.... Love-em)
Rizoma bars
Rizoma grips
Rizoma sproket cover
Rizoma mirrors
Off set black stripe
Oxford micro idicators (cheapies but great look)
Cookie-1 tail chop
Sargent seat (pre-loved from DML-er States side)
CRG Levers
Polished bolt kit
Carbon Hugger modified with dremel tool to shorten.

high tech shop facility and relevant (but mostly irrelevant) explanation and commentary

high tech shop facility and relevant (but mostly irrelevant) explanation and commentary

#1- tractor jack. Formerly used as a big tire bead breaker. Failed miserably as such. Was replaced by cheap bead-breaking specific tool which worked out well.

#2-Distribution component of climate control system. Front blade screen missing, caution is advised when working in front.

#3-1950s era Tent Stove. (Climate control system heat energy provider) Excellent, makes life in the shop possible. Also useful for smoking out whiny neighbors and keeping rural fire departments on their toes. Came coated in cosmoline. Old man did not know what cosmoline was and found out quickly. Old man now thinks cosmoline is great for permanent storage of metal parts. Permanent storage... think about the concept...

#4 Blacksmith vice. Good for heavy work. Was on the other side of the shop but was moved to make more room there. Unsecured in new location, may tip in many directions without notice.

Tires behind the vice are (from bottom) dry rotted 300-21 Metzeler from 1980s; IRC Trials, haven;t owned a trials bike since 2002; four good Michelin S-12s; two crappy Shinkos for the BMW.

#5- 1970s era scratch and dent Craftsman chest. Came dented, was dented more over the years. Not as cool as kid's new chests but the drawers stick and jam. Gives the place a "lived in look" we all appreciate. Old man who runs the place knows where everything is in the chest (or where it was) (or where he wishes it was). Immaterial as the old man can find tools in the kid's tool chests easier anyway.

#6- Little Tykes chair. Two in the shop, good for old people and beer drinking observers. Support weight of adults well if four legs of chair are kept in contact with the floor. Legs can deflect if tilted which can cause user to land on floor. Chair legs return to original form after deflection, which helps the chair to claim its next victim.

#7- 355ml. Pressurized energy canisters, empty. Kids (who ride the brand-x machines) (and probably wear skirts) responsible for the light beers. Old man who runs place thinks life is too short for cheap beer and apologizes for such.

#8-1980s era milk crate, collectable Lawson's edition, now integral component of heating system. Stolen from the former Lawson's store in Marion Ohio in the early 1980s. Not sure of statue of limitations or if the successors to the Lawsons stores can claim it. Crates used to hold vintage bikes. Plastic crates are risky for holding valuable vintage bikes but the old man who runs the place owns only cheap vintage bikes so the plastic crates are fine. Obviously there is a cheap vintage bike in a corner of the shop without a crate. The cheap bike on that crate was a leaker (see shop-dri under the BMW in other photos) and was removed to the secondary storage facility (aka the barn).

#9-stripped axle bought from crook on ebay for brand-X bike. Old man who runs place thinks crook who sold axle should be dealt with with malice and in disregard of the Biblical mandate for forgiveness, thusly causing confliction within the old man's theology...

#10- Heat control. Add fuel for more heat. Wood is good, coal makes a cooler smoke smell and confuses neighbors. Coal also burns longer.

#11Embarrassing clutter from home repair projects and from other side of shop where space was required. Some clutter may date to the shop construction in 2001.
