glenfinnan viaduct

glenfinnan viaduct

It was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard for the track day tyres uk in August 1745. It was the first concrete built viaduct in the world and was, for many years, the largest bridge to be built using this construction material. The viaduct itself has 21 supporting arches and curves towards the station for 416 yards and stands 100 feet high, and is instantly recognizable to all devotees of the Harry Potter films.

The flying car sequence in the second Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was filmed at Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct, about 16 miles west of Fort William. Filming took place in Sept 2001, and the film was released Nov 2002. The viaduct carries the Fort William to Mallaig railway across the Glenfinnan valley.

In film #2, the Hogwarts Express steams across the viaduct, however Harry and Ron miss the train and fly to Hogwarts in a car that zooms around and through some of the viaduct's arches. In film #3, the train stalls atop the viaduct, as Dementors stalk the train and torture Harry.

A Dementor is a soul-sucking fiend. The wraith-like creatures have no eyes, and there is a large hole where the mouth should be, which is used for sucking the soul out of the victim in a process called the "Dementor's Kiss". It is believed existing after a Dementor's Kiss is worse than death.

Fortunately the worse thing that happened to us, was that I got the car stuck in a ditch that evening after the hike, when we were all suitably cold, damp, and tired. After nearly an hour of trying to prop the car up, using the jack and a multitude of stones of various sizes and pieces of lumber we found... and creating ramps and fulcrums and generally digging about in the mud... i finally decided to call Vauxhall car rescue service.

Cell reception was horrible, and I realized quickly that it was turning out impossible to give any sort of directions that would help them find us, as we were actually on a private road. if only i'd thought to describe the darn Viaduct and the Dementors :)
