chocolate torte a chocolate torte with raspberry puree and a creme anglaise CHOCOLATE TORTE RECIPE: - 7 ounces of chocolate - 1 stick of butters - 3/4 cups of sugar - 4 large eggs, separated - 1/3 cup flour Melt the chocolate and the butter together in a stainless steel bowl over a pot of boiling water. Remove from heat. Take the egg YOLKS and combine with half of the sugar. Mix thoroughly. Combine the egg mixture with the chocolate mixture. Add in the flour and mix thoroughly. Take the remaining sugar and the egg WHITES and mix them in a bowl with a mixer until stiff peaks form. FOLD the egg white mixture into the chocolate mixture until barely incorporated, no more. These egg whites help make the cake light, and if you over mix it into the chocolate, all the air that you just whipped into the egg whites will be mixed right back out. Pour into an 8 inch springform pan and bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees. Insert a toothpick in the center to test if it's done. Toothpick should come out clean. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREME ANGLAISE RECIPE: - 2 cups of half and half - 1 vanilla bean - 5 egg yolks - 1/3 cup sugar Mix the sugar and egg yolks in a bowl until fully incorporated. In a saucepan, heat the half and half with the vanilla bean until it simmers slightly. Turn off the heat and take a few tablespoons of the half and half/vanilla bean mixture and quickly mix it into the egg and sugar mixtures. This is to gradually introduce heat to the eggs, so they don't just scramble. Scrambled eggs with sugar milk is not tasty. Once you've added a few tablespoons of heated milk to the eggs, take the egg mixture and pour it back into the milk and vanilla bean mixture. Stir continually while reheating to barely a simmer. Be careful not to burn! A way to test if it is done is cover the back of a spoon with the mixture. If you can run your finger through the liquid and it doesn't spill back into the area you just touched, it is done. If the liquid refills the area you just traced your finger through, keep going a little longer. Strain the sauce to get out any lumps. Take the vanilla bean and split it in half lengthwise, then scrape out the beans with your knife. put the beans into the sauce and stir until thoroughly mixed. Discard of the bean casing. Serve cooled or warm with cakes, fruit, anything you want. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RASPBERRY SAUCE: - 1 pint of raspberries - 1 cup of sugar - enough water to cover the raspberries in the saucepan. Put everything into a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Allow it to reduce and thicken until it is a consistency you like. Taste to see if it needs more sugar. Strain out the seeds and serve. ROTARY KILN--NEW IDRIA The first successful commercial application of a rotary kiln was for Portland cement production. This was accomplished by David O. Saylor in 1889 in Coplay, Pennsylvania and this marked an important technological step that contributed to increased material production. However, the initial use of rotary kilns was restricted to wood and coal fired cement production until 1918 when Henry Gould, the mine superintendent and engineer for the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Company, adapted the kiln's fuel, air draft and exhaust system to mercury ore reduction. The innovative design of the Gould Rotary Furnace led to worldwide use of this technology in metallurgical and mineral processing, pulp and paper drying, waste regeneration, and drastic improvements in environmental quality. Ore containing cinnabar entered the facility at the Ten Level grizzly where conveyors transported the ore through crushers, an 800-ton fine ore storage bin, and then to the upper level of the furnace building. At the upper level, ore is routed to one of four 80-ton furnace ore bins. Ore is fed into a furnace by gravity and an automatic "grass-hopper" feeder. Ore passes through a kiln in about thirty minutes handling a maximum capacity of about 75 tons a day per kiln. Fresh ore enters the tapered end of the kiln, and by the slight incline and slow turning, the ore migrates to the other end where it falls into the 20-ton capacity calcine (burnt-ore) bin. Fire and air are injected into the kiln at the ore-exit and the mercury-laden gasses exit an exhaust flue just above the kiln's ore-entry port. The intake air is preheated to about 400?? F. by passing it through the calcine bin before entering the firebox. Kiln exhaust is routed through a Sirocco dust collector to the condensing chamber where the cooling gasses release the mercury. Separated dust drops into a cone-shaped hopper and is washed away with water. The condensing system consists of two banks of sixty-four 16-inch by 18-foot long stainless steel pipes. Hoppers are affixed to the bottom of the condensing system for collecting the mercury that condenses out of the vapor. The exhaust exits the condensing system and expands into the "Big-Inch" pipe where it rapidly cools before being expelled out the stack. Mercury collects in the condensing hoppers as "mercurial soot" and drops by gravity into a water filled mechanical raking table where the mercury collects in a collection pot. Periodically, mercury is manually discharged into the lower hoeing table where it is mixed with quicklime (calcium oxide) to break the surface barrier allowing the mercury to coalesce. The mercury then flows to the 1% nitric acid bath where it is cleaned before final bottling. UNHCR photo / May 2010 UNHCR completes major water project for Somali refugees in Ethiopia JARRAR VALLEY, Ethiopia, May 4 (UNHCR) – UNHCR has completed and inaugurated a multi-million dollar water and electrification project that will benefit tens of thousands of people, including Somali refugees and members of the local community, in a semi-arid region of eastern Ethiopia. The US$5 million Jarrar Valley Water Supply scheme in the country's Somali region is using electricity to pump 1.3 million litres of fresh water a day to 51,000 people, including 16,000 refugees. The project was formally inaugurated late last month by Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees T. Alexander Aleinikoff and plans are afoot to supply 100,000 people with water during the dry season. "This is an innovative project and a good model," said Aleinikoff, who was in Africa on his first trip as deputy high commissioner. "It provides an important source of water to the refugees and also benefits the local community, but is also good for the environment and saves money." The project was welcomed by those who will benefit from it. "After years of huge difficulties, we now have plenty of clean drinking water and enough for cooking and washing," said Rodo, a mother of four who has spent the past two decades in Kebribeyah camp after fleeing conflict in her native Somalia. "Thanks to the much improved water yield, we are much cleaner and healthier than before." In the past, tanker trucks were used to bring water to Kebribeyah, but this was expensive and logistically cumbersome. So UNHCR and the regional authorities drilled wells in 2004 in the Jarrar Valley, 21 kilometres away, and piped the water to the camp using diesel-powered pumps. In a bid to further cut costs, UNHCR has funded the extension of the electricity grid to the Jarrar Valley. The work was completed last year and 15 generators now pump water from seven wells to Kebribeyah, guaranteeing a regular supply to the refugees and to members of the local community who live along the route of the water and new power lines. "We are now able to fully meet the needs of the refugees and, of course, it was logical to extend the service to the local people," said Anthony Mulenga, the UNHCR water engineer in charge of the Jarrar Valley scheme. "It is also cost-effective. By switching from diesel to electric, we have slashed our costs from US$7,000 to US$2,700 a month," he added. Kebribeyah now has 28 water outlets, up from four just five years ago, while the daily water output has increased from 12 litres to 20 litres for each of the 16,000 refugees now living in the camp. This meets internationally accepted standards. The easy availability of water in the semi-arid region also means that women no longer have to risk their safety by walking long-distances to fetch water. The project is helping to ease tension between locals and refugees because it also benefits the local community. Both the power grid and the water pipeline are connected to villages and points along the route, improving life for Ethiopians and boosting the local economy. "Before UNHCR gave us these precious water points, which pour clean and safe water, we faced serious shortages of water," said Fadumo Bashir, a local resident, adding that they used to collect their water from dirty ponds, "which led to serious health problems." Meanwhile, UNHCR is also improving water supplies to the nearby Sheder camp, home to 8,000 refugees, which was established in mid-2008 to accommodate a new influx of refugees from Somalia and has three wells. In Aw Barre camp, also home to 8,000 refugees, work has begun to extend supplies from two boreholes to the 20,000 local residents. Ethiopia currently hosts some 149,000 refugees, including 60,000 Somalis sheltered in five camps in the east. Here's where I am staying right now. Today marks a two year anniversary. Two years ago today, I bought this motorhome. Halloween, 2005, I officially became a homeless guy. This is without a doubt the most beautiful campsite I have had in two years of living in this thing, and best of all... IT'S FREE!!! Every once in a while you stumble upon these free campsites in National Forests. I was driving through a National Forest a couple of days ago, and saw a little dirt road, so I drove up it. It went to this clearing right next to a river. It even had a fire pit and a picnic table. I immediately thought, 'Screw paying $30 a night to stay in a parking lot, I'm gonna pull in here' In all my years of camping, the one repeating pattern I see, is... The more a campsite costs, the worse it is. You go to the, so called, "RV Park" You pay $40 a night to camp in a paved parking lot with another RV 10 feet to your left, and to the right. You go to some obscure state park and pay $10 a night for a beautiful sight, out in the woods. I don't get it. And... Believe it or not... This IS New Mexico. New Mexico is a fascinatingly diverse state. 5 Miles from here is a flat barren dry desert. But, up here on this mountain it just as green and lush as can be. I feel like I'm up in Maine, or Washington state. Kimi Raikkonen: Yeah, I didn't get exactly the best start, I got a bit of wheelspin and then Fisichella got past me and Alonso got alongside me but I was hoping and then on the first lap Fisichella ran wide at the exit of turn nine I think and I got beside him and I didn't pass him because they were much faster on the straight line so I was actually behind both of them braking into turn 12 but then from the middle I could brake later and got the first place. Q: What were your thoughts at that point in the race, you had to be aggressive, you were out for the win? Kimi Raikkonen: Yeah, I was quite confident that we would have the speed and we would have enough fuel in the car but of course you never know so you have to go for it if you have the chance and not trust your feelings and in the end it paid off well. Q: In that first stage of the race Fernando was very near you, what was the thinking at McLaren? Did you think they were going to come in earlier than you? Kimi Raikkonen: We thought they would be similar to us but now, afterwards, I think we have been very quick all weekend and we had quite a big advantage on speed so the only place where they could have got us at the start of the race was at the end of the back straight. They seemed a bit quicker there, but as long as I had a big enough gap to hold them back I thought I would be okay and just waited for the pit stop. Luckily enough we could run much longer and that was enough. Q: And how was the circuit from a physical point of view? Kimi Raikkonen: Not too bad, we had some padding on the headrest and I even didn't try to hold my head on the corner exit because that is a much easier way to make life more difficult if you have a chance to take it easy. Otherwise it was not very hot actually, it was pretty easy. Q: Fernando, a great second place but right at the end of the race? Fernando Alonso: Yeah, it was a nice surprise at the end. I saw the yellow flags on the straight but you cannot see the corner because it is a little bit uphill. It surprised me when I saw Montoya and the Jordan there and they had spun. It was two laps from the end. I nearly overtook Montoya but it was not possible and then it came to turn eight and I think he had damage in his car, he didn't have the perfect car in turn eight so went wide and I overtook him, so it was a nice surprise at the end but it is a little bit disappointing because we were not fighting with the McLarens, we were a bit slower than them, but this result is much better. Q: It was an exciting early phase of the race to watch, you were right behind Kimi but as we now know you did come in earlier. What were your thoughts at that point in the race, did you think it was going to be difficult given your fuel load? Fernando Alonso: Yes, I think the first lap was okay with Fisi (Giancarlo Fisichella) in P1. We knew that we were going to be quicker maybe than Kimi in the first stint because we were lighter so we tried to do our best in the first corners and we did it but in turn 12 Kimi was in front of us again so everything started again and I was able to follow Kimi but it was not possible to overtake in the first ten laps. Q: And how was the circuit in the race distance, a physical test? Fernando Alonso: It was okay. I think for the neck it is one of the hardest, as Brazil, because we run anticlockwise so we need to be a little bit more concentrated on these types of corners, and it was not too hot so it was okay and because it was quite an exciting race it didn't seem too long to me. Q: Juan Pablo, a great qualifying lap as it turns out, you were out early yesterday when the track was slow but you had a lot of fuel on board and you were looking like a very strong second place there when you came up to lap Tiago Monteiro at the end of the race. Juan Pablo Montoya: Yeah, it is a bit disappointing. I was in a difficult position yesterday in qualifying and even like that with the fuel the car had the speed for it I thought it was looking really good for today, I had too much graining at the start of the race so I couldn't really push because it was just wearing the front. When the front came up the car was very quick, I managed to set the fastest lap of the race and we were looking quite good. At the end we were just cruising to the end, passed Monteiro and he did just a bit like what Verstappen did to me a few years back. I did the first few corners fine then went into t a small story She walks out, leaving forever, says, "I'm doing you the biggest favor in your life." I roll over and fall asleep, the pillow still wet from her tears. I'm awake at 2am in an insomniac fit. All the drinks are empty. At least a dozen vacant bottles. So I walk to the corner market and I'm the only customer in the store. I have a tiny cart and put ten bottles of Wild Turkey in it. Then I grab an extra bottle. At the checkout, all those little impulse items, I take a package of condoms and some beef jerky. The cashier asks me if I have ID. I show it to him and notice he only reads the birthdate. The cashier asks me cash or credit. Credit. The cashier asks for my ID again. He just reads the name and makes sure it matches the card. No one ever looks at the picture. I leave, pushing my little cart down the street. Two cops pull over, one fat and one short and ask to see my ID. Do I have a choice? They run it through a machine without even looking at it. No warrants, they say, but just in case, what's in the bags. Eleven bottles of Wild Turkey, some condoms and some beef jerky, I say. I think this guy is a pervert, the short cop whispers, loud enough that I can hear. What are you, some kind of pervert? the large one asks. I plead the 5th. The cops take me down to the station, sirens blaring. They say it's just in case. For several hours they grill me with questions about murdered people. All I know is what I read in the papers, I say. This isn't the guy, the one cop whispers, still not quite quiet enough. You aren't the guy, the other cop says, arms crossed. The short cop holds up a black and white mugshot. This man, fat cop says, has been causing terror all over town. He's killed eleven people already, the other cop mutters. We thought you were him. There is a likeness, I say, but how did you get his photograph if you don't know his name? You can go, says the fat cop. Can I have my groceries back? I ask. You can have one bottle. That's all I need. I'm forced to walk back to the hotel, about five miles from the station. I decide to drink. By the time I have finished half the bottle I start having paranoid delusions that around every corner, down every filthy alley is the serial killer. I imagine my doppelganger stabbing me with long sharp fingernail knives. Deep into my neck he thrusts until the blades poke out the other side. Each step increases my paranoia and my pace, until I am running for my life down empty streets. It's very quiet. Then I trip and fall flat on my face. The Wild Turkey bottle shatters and inch long slivers stab into my neck. The alcohol seeps warm into my jacket. I pull the glass out painlessly and I don't bleed much. The sun rises the moment I return to the hotel. I go back to my room, which has been cleaned by the maid. Clean Car... Summer Sky While out my main objective was try to get some nice shots "strobist" style with the flash gun, but really struggled. However this one was 1 flash Camera Left (I think maybe 1/8th), just to try and boost the chrome on the front grill, and its the only shot i kept from the night. When i processed the file i adjusted the WB to bring the sky out more, and then used the curves to keep the shadows on the car. Just a shame i didnt attack my bumper with some brasso.. the pit marks arent good. But i dont think they ruin the shot. I also wanted to give an update on Mimi...now living in the barn. Mimi was taken a boiling hot Gerber baby bottle with one tablespoonful of Karo syrup added. By the time it reached Chicora, it was still very warm for her tummy. I did not go up to the barn at all.......but was told that Mimi drank only half of the bottle. Half is good...... Mimi's balance was tested....her little legs are strong. Mimi was observed for quite a while. THIS I feel is going to be a good story. She was thriving. She was drinking a lot from her Mama and sticking to her Mother, Bari, like glue. Bari was not rejecting her at all. She played and played and drank more while Bari was fed....then she went to lay down with her twin sister, Bebe. I thank you ALL so much for sending your prayers and good thoughts to this little tiny goat. She's been through a lot. First of all being taken away from your Mother on the second full day of your birth.......is a huge shock to begin with. Second to begin nursing ( not much and not very well ) from your Mother and then being fed a baby bottle is a huge change too. We can't forget she made a long trip to Pittsburgh and then went to Walmart to pick up cleaning supplies with me.....She continued to get stronger....little at a time. "I" didn't think she was strong enough to go back.......but we did not have enough Mother's milk. Mimi had already nursed from a goat and little Livvy had not. Mimi had a better chance of adapting than Livvy would have. Livvy had no one to nurse from and Bari would have harmed another Mother's goat. It seems as though ( let's keep our fingers AND TOES crossed ) that all is going well. I will feel a lot better when I can go up there and see for myself......but for right now I must stay out of that barn and get COMPLETELY better. I promise I am going to bed right now.....and it is only 12:57 am......early for me. I am going to try and take better care of myself. cool house cool house. all it needs is a drawbridge and a moat - lol It was a beautiful Spring morning, and I had to run some errands in this area. Remembering how all these buildings looked from my childhood - when things were a lot nicer - and even before I was born - East Saint Louis - in the 1950's to the 1960's - was considered voted to be one of the best cities to live in in the United States. The town was clean and thriving, the neighborhoods were well kept and nice, and factories were all over the place - so - if one wanted a job - they were plentiful then. I decided to capture some images of the more notable landmarks while they were still standing in order to try to preserve some of the memories of 'what was.' The company I work for makes hand-made bath and body products. We also make hand poured candles in jars. We poured about 700+ Cranberry candles for The Bay ...... or Save On, one of the two, anyways.... There will be some spillage so the jars have to be cleaned. Using my GOOD hand, I scrape off the spills, then polish the jars with a bit of Windex. BUT, I have to use my bad hand to hold the jars. One would think that wouldn't be a problem. Well, after about 5 hours I started to feel some pain. An hour later I was done my shift and went home. I woke up at SIX (on my DAY OFF!!!) and knew instantly my hand was poofy. But I didn't expect it to be this poofy! I sleep with my splint on and wear it all day except when I shower or bathe. When I go to work Monday, I hope the candles are finished by someone else. I only got through 5 cases of 36 candles and there are 12 more to go. I won't be doing them Monday. Pre-Inspection The night before our first apartment inspection. Also, coincidentally, St. Patrick's Day. That makes me wonder if the real estate company purposely schedules inspections the day after holidays so that people have to clean up their messes from the night before. *This the day I actually thought my Project 365 ended.
