This gathers any hair or debris into a pile you can then pick up. When the washcloth is dirty, you can use the clean edges and corners to scrub stubborn spots. Todd surprised me (well, he asked for the camera, so it wasn't *that* much of a surprise!) with this profile shott, I instinctively yelped "Is it my bad side?"

Recently I had been taken aback by the short story "Face" by Alice Munro (in her latest collection, "Too Much Happiness") where the character had my type of birthmark, a port-wine stain. The character speaks: "My birthmark not red, but purple. Dark in my infancy and early childhood, fading somewhat as I got older, but never fading to a state of inconsequence, never ceasing to be the first thing you notice about me, head-on, or are shocked to see if you come at me from my left, or clean side. It looks as is someone has dumped grape juice or paint on me, a big serious splash that does not turn to driblets till it reaches my neck."

While I am not as self-conscious about it anymore, I'll admit to still having issues every now and then. But alas, of all the shots that were taken of me that day at White Sands this was my favorite one.

The cooling ribs on the top of the motor needs a bit of cleaning! I've been looking forward to taking a closer look at the engine. I have never owned a motorcycle before, and I have never done any work on an engine, sa this is going to be really interesting and a "learning experience" as they say :)

I have only one rule on this project, and that is to not cause any more damage to it. If I later decide to scrap the whole project, I want to be able to resell it to someone with more experience.

So, off we go!

I applied a little rust remover to each of the four bolts earlier in the day, to loosen them up a little bit. Don't want to apply to much pressure when opening them. If the nuts get damaged in any way I am going to have a hard time removing and replacing them.

Abe working to remove the rust. What you see is much of the oxidation that occured in the couple days since moving it into the studio from outside.

I used a pumus stick (Pumie brand) and it worked fantastic. Zud worked really well too. We probably had a combined 8 hours of scrubbing the massive amount of rust off using those products with a wire bristle brush, small scrub brush, and a rag. Then we moved it to the studio, wiped it down with a dry rag and brush and applied the navel jelly. It completely coated and neutralized the oxidation.

We plan on painting the litho press soon too.

During the final campaign of the war my father served in the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. The 2nd Devons, along with the Grenadier Guards, were allocated the Hermann Goring Barracks, described by their Commanding Officer, Colonel Peter Brind, as "a place of indescribable filth with dead bodies still lying about and barrack rooms used as latrines". It required the labour of 2,000 German women ...there were no men... over 48 hours to make them habitable.
Evidently the well-ordered scene in my father's photograph must have followed the clean-up. The Wehrmacht certainly looked after its own and these impressive amenities seem a far cry from Catterick or Pirbright. To me there is always something slightly off-putting about swimming pools, gymnasia, diving boards, changing rooms, shower cubicles, white tiles, medicine balls and men in trunks. School, and early "Temple of the Body" indoctrination aimed at discouraging self-abuse, is partly to blame, but I have always perceived something slightly suspect in the obsessive cultivation of the physique. At bottom it is bound up with the idea of getting your own way by physically overpowering those who disagree with you. It is hardly surprising that body culture, with its various sub-cults, such as sunbathing and naturism, should have been such a fetish during the interwar years, the age of totalitarianism. The fad lingered on into the 50s, with the Keep Fit Association and Eileen Fowler's television appearances.

Day 27 - Clean House

I'm posting this photo late because I was busy all night cleaning the house....mainly the living room and kitchen. Tonight when I get home, I may get started on the bedroom; My wife will be sleeping, but geez, you got to see that room....actually, no you shouldn't

The place started to look a bit unorganized. Merita, I love her, but she is no help. She isn't even willing to clean up after herself. In a way, she's a one-woman wrecking crew. I talked to her mom about that and the understanding I have is she has always been that way. Her own mother wasn't able to get her to clean as a kid. I'm all for feminism but I feel the concept of each of us doing our part is perfectly reasonable, hell, it's assumable!

All today, I've very much been an organizational Nazi; to the point I had to turn around and apologize. Nonetheless, I find my attitude justified.

Anyway, I have made the decision not to go to bed until everything is clean and organized. Hmm, if this is part of some kind of training Merita is putting me through, she is a true genius.

Life in Costa Rica is so different because of the constant battle against the elements. Ticos have to battle the frequent rain and the flora and fauna, which try to retake the land. Barely any types of food except coffee can grow well there and most Costa Ricans live in pretty extreme poverty. Things are so much less clean; for example, the school in Puricil had no soap for the children to wash their hands and there is no hot water for showers and you can't flush toilet paper and there are no pipes outside (everyone just builds really nasty drainage ditches) and there are ferrel dogs pooping everywhere in the street. Even though many Costa Rican's living conditions are so abject, they smile so much and they're so happy. This is so inspiring to me, who has everything compared to these people.

This day in the morning I moved scrap metal and wood from the back courtyard of the school. There were literally piles as tall as me of decrepit scraps of rotting wood and piles of sharp metal objects back there, (I feel like I know what it's like to clean up after a natural disaster!) and the children just went and played back there without a care! We also had to break up the wood (much of which was in long planks) so that the school could use it to burn for cooking (even though a lot of the wood had toxic paint on it...) They just could afford a small, dull saw so most of the wood cutting consisted of all of us smacking the wood against a rock until it splintered and broke. In the afternoon, I gave computer classes to the 6 fifth graders. I don't know where the school must have found those old (1997) computers, but the children didn't know how to use them, so I taught them how to use Word. Then I painted classrooms.

For months I've been debating a TRUE art zine, where every page is in fact arts and crafts. Not just talking about them, or how to make them, but actually made items. My goal is 5 zines with 5 double sided pages each. But who knows I might just keep making more. This one had some basic quilting, then couched on some various yarns and ribbons, even a cool sparkly pipe cleaner (had to do that one by hand) then even added some beads, paper flowers, and even plastic and metal flowers. Future pages may be watercolors sewn to fabric, tatting, knitting swatches, etc, all done into a mini art quilt.

295 - Room Mate

12/4/11 Room Mate - My friend for the day. Was a little ill today so didnt go to school and stayed in my room all day - felt the safest option. My only company all day was this little lizard which is a type of gecko, I think. I 1st saw him (how do you tell which sex they are?) this morning on the cieling above my head then next he was on the wall by the bed but soon scuttled behind the head board when I moved. over the following few hours he appeared again and again before quickly disappearing behind something then lastly just before dinner he came out, ran to a nice position, allowed me to take a few photos before diving behind a bookcase. I like the cold, deep, dark, unemotional eyes that dont seem to move but are looking at you intently nonetheless. I dont mind sharing the room with him - he eats all the bugs if they dare to settle on the wall.
Think I'm better now though as managed to each a gorgeous dinner of stuffed auborgines, Biryani, spiced yogurt followed by sweet flatbread or cakes. Eaten without any adverse effects so thats good, Back to form again tomorrow I hope.
Went up on the roof of the house late this afternoon to get some air and to relieve the cabin fever I started to suffer, it rained, big, fat drops but was refreshing as i stayed up there. You get a great view of around the area though not very far apart from a couple of high rise blocks - cant help but feel they must be one of the worst places to live here as they must be hot, noisy and suffer terrible water supply problems. The Indian government supplies water mostly free but only turns it on for a couple of hours a day so that everyone turns their pumps on to fill the tanks on the roof. This is fine if you live in a house as you can have large tanks that supply all you need but if you share the building like the flats where the hostel I stayed at then you only get a small tank and with six people showering twice a day then the water runs out sometimes. Dont know how the people in the high riises cope then as I could see any tanks on the roof but really small ones on each balcony.
Nothing compared to the kids in my class though - they live in the slums and the water is given to them by a tanker which is towed in every 2 weeks and exchanged for the empty one. They have to fetch and carry all the water they use but still turn up for class clean and in fresh clothes too.
If the water runs out they have to find water elsewhere - no storage tanks in the slums.

It took me an hour or so to slog up to the top of this hill in the predawn light to watch the sun rising over Death Valley. I had driven to this spot the night before while trying desperately to gain some altitude to escape the 50 degree heat in the valley. The idea of sleeping in the dust in that kind of heat hadn't seemed very appealing at the time. A couple of hours after taking this photo it was already 40 degrees and I was in Panamint Springs with about an eighth of a tank of fuel left listening to the guys that ran the pub/petrol station telling me about how they'd had a power surge, resulting in loss of electricty. Not only was their computer was fried, meaning that they couldn't pump any fuel, all their drinks were hot because the fridges weren't working. It was too far to drive to anywhere with fuel, so I sat on the veranda of the pub sweating and drinking hot water out of a plastic carton and waited hours for somebody to come along that could help me. The first to show up was a gang of Germans on Harley Davidsons that were on some sort of tour of the country. They weren't much help. After they'd cleaned all the warm beer out of the pub they roared off again. The next car was a family from New York, who agreed to let me syphon some fuel out of their tank, but all I could manage to suck out with the short hose that the guys at the pub had given me was fumes. Eventually a young Italian couple that were touring the country in a hired car offered to drive me to Trona, about an hour and half away. I sat in the back of the car with a jerrycan between my knees telling them about Australia and how grateful I was for their help. When we got back the pub had its power back on, but the petrol pumps were still out of action. I offered to buy the Italian couple lunch, but they refused, saying it was no problem at all that they had driven three hours out of their way across the featureless burning desert to help me. So, italians, if you're out there. Thanks. I might still be on the veranda if it hadn't been for your help.

Today I cleaned the windows in the duplex and I am sooooo cheesed! It looks great!

I also moved around Tony's herb garden because some were over-taking others and I didn't want them to die.

I also cleaned dog hair nastiness, swept and FINALLY put away the HUGE exercise ball I couldn't (until today) get myself to take the air out of. Truthfully I won't EVER be able to use it in this tiny house, at least not with the amount of stuff we have in it. So it's put up for now.

Lol, then I gave both the dogs a damned bath and now Fred is shedding all over the house. So I gotta take him outside and brush him, but he's gonna just roll in the dirt when I'm done.

*sigh*

I love this little home and I think it's my favorite ever. I know we won't be here too long and that's sad in a way but it's the perfect transition home for us. I hope to always have fond memories.

SLIGHT RANT

In the last few months I have heard friend after friend complaining. It seems to be the theme of people I love and care about (and even two blogs I read!). I hear people whining about their damned problems but then when a solution presents itself they do NOTHING about it.

'Be the change you wish to see in the world' does not always mean recycle, love thy neighbor, give to charity.

It doesn't always mean what you can do for others.

I believe it also means that you can be an inspiration to others in what you do with yourself FOR yourself.

I think it also means to reach your goals, strive to be the best you can be (yes, that means COMPETE!) and love the moments you live just for you.

I am not against giving to others. I am not against volunteering and being a little selfless at times. But do it in a way that you too can appreciate.

Live your life for you and live it well and take some goddamned chances. Too many people live their lives and just let the days pass. They want sympathy from others because they think their lives suck. They wanna hear 'oh, don't worry, it'll get better, you deserve so much more'.

Maybe it won't get better and maybe you DON'T deserve more!!

If you are not willing to work/fight for what you want, if you aren't ready to take risks then perhaps you DON'T deserve the world at your fingertips.

Damn it all, this sense of ENTITLEMENT people have... Where do they GET this? Hey, I'm going to eat like a pig, but I want to look like Paris Hilton. Hey, I'm gonna sit on my lazy ass all day, but I want to be an entrepreneur. Hey, I'm going to sit at my computer and look at Flickr and WoW all day but I want to be a killer writer.

GET OVER THE FUCKING WISHES!!! DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIVES!!!

Don't you get how precious time is?!? Don't YOU?! Do you remember five years ago like it was yesterday? I remember TEN years ago like I woke up from it.

To wish for something is to accept it can never be done by your own self.

Take the risk. Shut the f*ck up and do something about what you don't like.

But I'm the bad guy for saying something, right? Because people like to be sheep.

Argh. I just hate to see people with more creative ideas then others will ever have and they're wasting away on STUPID hang-ups. Like some dumb, bimbo future ex-wife, for example.

My heart has felt nothing but grief since I got to this dumpy place. I'm reminded again and again why I left here. And yet I feel like a bad person for hating this place so much. I know I should be grateful that I have a family...but it's so dysfunctional it should be illegal to spend more than 10 minutes with us at a time.

I try to separate myself from my family mentally...but I get so scared that I'm just another loon. I can't tell you how scared I am of developing paranoid schizophrenia or bipolar disorder...

I just don't know anymore...I'm only 19 and have lost most of my hope. I know I have an entire life ahead of me and I know this won't last forever...but there are times where I am convinced it's all one big prank on me and life really is this bad forever.

But I am a believer in self control...I think I lost that at some point. I just feel so defeated by life sometimes I forget I'm in control of my own destiny.

I think I need to take a trip to the graveyard today...that place always sobers me when my emotions get the best of me. Perhaps I'll go tomorrow and take some pictures?

I'm actually happy with this one despite my original intentions turning into an epic fail. I took this sitting in a full tub with my prom dress on. I've been wanting to do that for quite some time...but the tub is too small and shallow and it's a horrible aqua color. I can't tell you how disappointed I was...and still am. Maybe one day...

TRF: I went to the dentist today and was scared. I inherited my mom's BAD teeth (you name it, I've probably had it done). Despite my brushing I can never manage to escape those pesky cavities! Today I triumphed...save for my gums. They bled and hurt SO bad...they're still a bit achy but I plan to floss every day now...why can't teeth me self cleaning?

98/365 - Old treasures made new

I have had this ring for over 15 years. It had become very tarnished and I never wore it. I took a friend's suggestion and used toothpaste to clean all of my sterling silver jewelry (which is a lot) and discovered how much I love this ring again. It is obvious it's handcrafted from some design marks that faded on the back.

And yes, my hands are almost always this dry. I drink tons of water, but wash them a lot

We haven't learned how to do bezels in metals class yet, but I really wanted to try my hand at it, so I just went for it. Glad I did! It turned out great! Still have a bit of clean up to do on this ring, but I am excited with how it turned out.

Moonwalk - Michael Jackson - reverse

When I have time, I really enjoy doing the weekly challenge of illustration Friday. So this week I had a bit more time (just a tiny bit). The theme was "Reverse" and so all I could think of was the moonwalk of Michael Jackson!! What an amazing dancer he was.

So while doing that illustration (digital collage), I figured he was sooo good at it, could probably have been on the ceiling. So here is the result. Hope you enjoy viewing this one.

There's almost no better glue for exterior jobs or to bond wood, glass, stone, and even metal. It's 100% waterproof. And we all know what that means.

Despite warnings in every paragraph to avoid skin contact, it is inevitable. Early in the day, I tried acetone to remove the dried-on glue. It didn't work. Before bed, as I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, I wondered if this was a way to remove one's fingerprints. It bugged me still, so I went to the basement to clean my fingers with mineral spirits. It didn't work.

The puckered feeling was really bugging me, in a pesky-fly sort of way, so I called Gorilla Glue's 800 number. They were closed, of course, but the message said something like this: For our Gorilla support team, press one. For Gorilla sales, press two. For X, press three. For X, press four. If you have Gorilla Glue on your hands, press five.

I had to laugh out loud as I pressed five.

"Unfortunately," the recording said, "there's no solvent to remove Gorilla Glue. Using acetone or paint thinner will only dry your skin and irritate it more. The glue will gradually fade in 3-5 days. Meanwhile, applying lotion will keep your skin moist and speed the process." I was still laughing.

I knew this. I spend weeks out of every year with grout-stained, glued fingers.

Thanks to a mosaicist friend, I learned a new way to use this glue. Rather than dampening a surface, adding the glue, and clamping the piece, I apply the glue straight, wipe it a little, and wait twenty minutes. This stuff bubbles up between the pieces of glass, and that's nasty; waiting keeps the bubbling action to a minimum.

I noticed most of today, we had clear, cloudless skies, but I knew that we might have some clouds move in for a spectacular sunset. So as I drove home from work, I pondered "Should I go shoot a sunset of Seattle from Beacon Hill, or should I go to Whidbey Island and shoot a sunset shot of Admiralty Head Lighthouse?" So this thought is going back and forth in my head as I drive north getting closer to Seattle, watching the clouds develop in the sky, then I pass right on by the exit to take for Beacon Hill. Okay, I am going to Whidbey Island. That was an adventure as I drove through rush hour traffic and then had to wait for the Mukilteo, yes there is a lighthouse there as well, car ferry to be transported across Puget Sound to Whidbey Island. All the while the clouds are really getting interesting and I still have 20 miles to drive to get to the lighthouse once I get back on dry land.
I finally make it to the lighthouse after getting stuck behind cars going "The Speed Limit!" Don't these guys know that I am a Speed Demon right now and sunset is in 15minutes? It is okay my Flickr friends, I drove safely and did follow the speed limit, 90% of the time, and got to the lighthouse with 10 minutes to spare. Once I arrived, that is when the sun was putting on it's show, so I quickly set up my tripod and captured this.
I used three exposures -2,0, +2, merged in Photomatix, a little color saturation, and Photoshop to remove a plywood covered window pane and to compress the image.
I again want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken the time to view my photo stream and make comments. I appreciate them and am humbled by all of the great work out there. Your work inspires me to be the best that I can be. Thank you.

Update. I replaced this photo on August 7, 2010. I have learned new skills with editing, and the biggest problem that I had with this photo was that the lighthouse itself had a blue cast to it. The HDR processing really pulls out all available light and color. Well it just looked unnatural, so I was able to desaturate a lot of the blue out of the building. I used Photoshop some more to clean up the artifacts in the lower two windows, a big white square obscured most of the lower panes of glass.

Day 1 recap

The flights to San Fran went very well. After landing we picked up our car and drove into San Francisco. We got turned around a few times due to one-way roads and no left turns, it was a bit like when the forest forced the hobbits further and further off course, only less spooky and more enraging.

We finally got to our Hotel and it did look charming. However upon checking in we were met with the rude in of "all rooms full" and they didn't have any record of our reservation; I was exceptionally frustrated. As if to counterbalance my frustration Amon did a marvelous job keeping her cool. Fortunately they were able set us up in another hotel just a few blocks away.

The new hotel, the Mayflowe was very nice. The room was essentially a 1 bedroom apartment complete with walk-in closet. it was the first time on the trip I wished we had brought MORE luggage! It was decorated nice, was very clean and had a nice view of the skyline.

The best part of the stop was meeting up with Matt and Kate. It was so nice to see them again and really cool that our vacations could overlap. We ended up walking around a section of Chinatown and being treated to a delicious meal at Empress China. According to the photo wall on the first floor we were the latest in a long line diners including Sidney Poitier, Eric Estrada, Chuck Norris, "International Action Star" Jackie Chan, and too many other illustrious faces to list here! The food was was very good, but not as great as the company (thanks Matt and Kate!)
