'Feathers' the Duck ~ Set Free
Any single parent knows the seemingly unending challenges in raising children by yourself.
I am a single father to three of the most amazing girls that I've ever met.
I've tried to raise them to be compassionate, considerate... to be responsible and to have good judgement... to understand that their actions can make some difference in our world... that they have within them the power to make changes to our reality...
Today I am so filled with pride.
On May 20th my daughter came home with a brood of tiny ducklings in her tee shirt.
She had tears in her eyes.
Mama duck was killed by a car and the ducklings were milling about their mama's smooshed body waiting for some miracle that would never come...
They must've just hatched because they were so tiny and helpless... cute with their fluffy yellow and brown down and their tiny little duckbills...
My daughters decided that they'd raise these little fuzzballs...
They researched and they learned all about the care of ducklings... they took turns staying up late to adjust the lights that kept them warm... they'd read next to them and watch for signs that they were too cold or too hot.
Every day they'd feed them and clean their pen.
In the first days we lost a couple and the house was filled with tears.
It was a heartbreaking time.
Dad had to have the sensitivity to let them absorb this lesson... that there is no substitute for the skill of a mother duck in raising her chicks... that the girls were doing their best... that nature was 'culling' the weakest chicks so that the strong could survive...
And dad had to leave the room for a few minutes after trying to teach them that one.
They had to raise these ducklings and I had to raise them.
Still the tears flowed and there were a couple of duck funerals in our backyard... one of my daughters got really upset and claimed 'this is all my fault!'
I let the lessons sink in and I encouraged them as much as I could... I never did anything more than capture the ducks when they got out...
They knew that they were doing this on their own.
As the little ducks grew the joy of watching them grow overcame the sadness of the early loss and their waddling around the yard made us all laugh and smile...
Each day the girls took care of them... each night they put them to bed in a tiny pen in our shed... in the morning they'd put them in another pen theyd built in the yard... give them baths with the hose and feed them...
The little ducks grew and they grew so fast and pretty soon we all knew it was time to let them go.
I had told them in the first days that if they could raise just one of the ducks to maturity that they'd done a good job.
They raised four.
Today we let the last one go... 'Feathers.'
She'd become quite 'imprinted' on us... she was the one I'd run into in my bathroom... she was the one who thought she was a person... she was the one who'd walk into the house if the door was left open... she was the one who expected a seat at the dinner table...
We drove in my truck to the pond near our house and my youngest daughter insisted at the last minute on carrying Feathers in her arms so she could give her one last hug.
There would be no more baths with her duck friend.
There were some tears as we said goodbye and Feathers waddled into the water...
She let out some quacks of joy and she looked really happy.
Then she ran across the water and joined her siblings who'd been in the pond for two days.
She started eating right away.
My daughters tears dried up and they became filled with pride as Feathers started swimming and cavorting with the others...
They knew right there that they had done this...
I told them how proud I was of them and gave a round of hugs and took some pictures.
The proudest one at the pond right there was me.
It's moments like this that make all of the challenges and all of the strle so worth it... these moments are the payoff.
Moments when you see the product of the way you've raised your children.
These girls will make a difference in our world.
They already have.
Jeanne saved my soul
again last night,
she bathed me in love.
She told me I was beautiful,
and then I made her come a lot.
She made me special perfumed tea,
went and bought patisserie,
put on music: Bob Marley,
lay me back and fed me.
She read a poem by Baudelaire,
sitting naked in a chair,
her perfume filled the holy air,
and eased my tired heart.
She lit a fire later on,
put her bra and panties on.
I watched her as her beauty shone,
and filled my empty soul.
And though I did my best and tried,
sadness claimed me and I cried.
She wiped the wetness from my eyes,
being kind, she said she didn`t mind.
She drew a bath and washed me clean,
then kneeling took me by degrees.
She held me till I went to sleep,
then put me on the 10:15.
God you work in wondrous ways.
bless this girl for all her days.
And when I`m old and tired and grey,
I'll think of this day.

What's in Edward's camera bag.
not in picture: Canon 40D and 17-40L lens
I've gotten quite a few queries on what I use and why I use them. Equipment doesn't make a tremendous difference in your photography so worry about more important things such as finding somewhere to hide before aliens land in 2012. HAHA okay in all seriousness, good equipment doesn't equal good pictures. A good eye helps much more :)
Here's the list of my equipment and their uses (some of them are "DIY-ed") This set of equipment is changing constantly as I figure out what works, and more importantly, what doesn't.
- Billingham 306 bag: The prettiest bag I've seen... for cameras. Don't ask me why but most of the camera bags out there have that mundane, homogeneous, box-like shape. This Billingham is made out of the nicest leather out there. BTW, I have replaced the dividers with Crumpler dividers since they are softer and more "cushiony"
- Canon 5D MkI : My main camera used for landscapes and most stuff. The only problem I have with this camera is the pathetic build despite the pro-standard image quality. Really, what on earth was Canon thinking?
- Canon 40D: My back-up camera used mainly for portraits and for times when I know the camera would be getting bashed and drenched in inclement weather. The second body is essential when you want to change perspectives quickly and when you the location you are in is rainy/snowy/dusty.
- 17-40mm f4L: My lens used most for landscape/conceptual stuff.
- 135mm f2L: The portrait lens. Emphasis on "THE". It's the" awesome-est"
(but practical) lens there is for portraits
- 50mm f1.8: The trusty little lens which is surprisingly sharp.
- Manfrotto 190XPRO3 and Arca-Swiss Z1 ballhead: I use this for all my long exposures. Good stability, yet lightweight = Perfect combination
- Voigtlander R3a film rangefinder and 40mm f1.4 Nokton: Leica image quality in a cute little body. <3 Used when I don't want to lug all my crap around with friends and for street photography.
- 580EX MkII flash: OK, I was an ignorant imbecile claiming flash was not needed in photography. and I WAS WRONG. Flash is essential to control lighting in scenarios when the natural lighting isn't in your favour. The 580 is used as a master flash in wireless flash photography as well.
- 430EX flash: Used as a slave in wireless flash photography to create lighting
- Lee Flash gels for colour correction and effects (The coloured strips in on the right hand side of the photo) : Used with the flash units for colour effects and when I need to balance light from the flashes with ambient lighting
- Translucent case for flash gels: Improvised use of film sleeves haha
- Pelican Maglite torchlight: 90 lumens to light the world. Okay, not really the world... but this torch is still extremely bright. Point it in your eyes if you love the idea of being blind. Used to autofocus at night and to find my way around my camera.
- Translucent Silicon keyboard protector: Used to protect Ms 5D who apparently has a severe case of hydrophobia.
- B+W ND filter (the weird black circular filter): For daytime long exposures when I need a looooong shutter speed
- Wireless remote & transceiver: To reduce vibrations when shooting long exposures. And also when I want to be in the frame :)
- Lens cloth and lens blower: To clean my lenses (for show only. My lenses are not petty little girls who are afraid of a little grime)
- Camera batteries: For eating when hungry while shooting. Just kidding.
- Sanyo Enloop rechargable batteries: For the flash units. They're environmentally friendly :)
- Small clear plastic bag: For keeping the 430 flash dry
I hoped this list will help you with packing the right things into your camera bag. Just note that I rarely bring all these things when I go shooting since I personally feel that the less you carry, the more fun you actually have. The more fun you have, the better pictures you make.
Ł500 down and animation fail.
I bought a new camera. A Canon EOS 450D. It's practically the same as my 400D except it has live view. I bought it so I could at last animate with live view when I shoot at uni. I also had to pay ?45 for some leads to go with it so I could run it off a pled in battery as it will be on constantly from 9-7 every day.
I was ?500 down and now without a Milly, but at least I would be able to animate easier and more effeciently.
On monday I went to uni, set everything up, got the set all glued in place etc, then pled in the camera... the software was out of date and couldn't see my camera. I went to the IT department and asked them to please update it. One of them tried to, but had to wait for authorisation. As I forgot my old camera, it meant we could shoot nothing on monday.
The next day, that IT guy was sick and we had to explain our situation to someone else. This guy refused to upgrade it. He said he had something which could POSSIBLY be it, but he didn't want to try it in case it messed everything up. He said he would try during easter. We only get the studio until thursday next week, easter is the week after.
So whilst being ?500 poorer for no real reason, I used my old camera and animated half-blind again.
The day after, we came into the studio to find the computer had killed our entire animation so far. The programme had died as we had so many hidden frames in it (because we had no live view). Now the first 30 seconds of animation, which is only about 600 frames long, is in amoungst 1771 frames and I have to dig out every single correct frame and somehow put it together. I've tried to do it and it's impossible. I've also realised that some parts need to be photoshopped and I have no way of knowing what files are correct and which are not once I've edited everything together and we have no time to reshoot the start of the animation.
We now have just monday to thursday to shoot the majority of our animation and reshoot the previous lost parts. We have to have the extra lighting equipment back by 4:30pm on thursday and we have classes we can't miss on monday and tuesday.
I think we (and by we, I mean Sachiko and I) are actually properly screwed over this time. If they refuse to give us an extension, we will fail. I have wasted so much money on the animation this time, not only the ?500 but also all the money for animation supplies to make the puppet etc and all of the money spent on the last animation which we ended up scrapping.
None of this has been our fault at all, it's all just horrible bad luck. We come into the studio as soon as uni opens and leave when it closes at 7pm, we get 30 seconds shot a day and we don't leave the studio all day, but it looks like we've done basically nothing.
Oh and you know what else sucks? The trains around here have been broken for about 4/5 weeks and they're not going to be fixed until the end of May. I've seen Matt once, for 23 hours, since they broke and I probably won't see him again for another two weeks.
Also, my jaw has become considerably worse, I can now no longer open it enough to clean my teeth properly, fit a forkful of food in my mouth or bite into a sandwich. It also choses to come out of place sideways and at random. This causes me to look like I have tourettes as I jump and yell 'ARGH, FUCK!' without fail, every time it happens.

"The Pyramids...... The Sphinx...... and the Camel Riders"
My grandparents traveled a lot.........
I'm trying to clean out and organize my garage / basement. There are boxes of my dad's things -- that I have not been able to go thru until now. It's a combination of trash (my dad was a pack-rat - saved EVERYTHING) and treasures. This is one of the treasures.
I've been reading newspaper articles, and old letters that were among the papers -- In the process I've learned a lot about my grandfather Watkins that I never knew...... it seems he was a fascinating man. I wish I had known him. I never knew him because...... he died the first time he saw me, when I was 4 days old...... seriously.
The couple on the right (on the camels) are my grandparents. Yes, I think that's a Shriner's hat.....
I wish I knew the date of this photo......

Witching With Herbs III: From Nature To The Cauldron (Part Two)
Once you have finished your harvesting, it is time to start working with them to get the most of its medicinal and magical properties.
- The first step is to clean the herbs thoroughly of dust, animal hair, insects and all kind of natural debris; don’t leave that work for tomorrow! If you don’t have time to do that the day you have harvested, take all herbs outside the bags and leave them on a table or floor where they won’t be a bother, away from pets and kids, over a mat of newspaper sheets or any other absorbent material.
- Once the herbs are clean, decide which herbs will be used fresh and which ones will be set to dry; fresh herbs are better to make smudge sticks, kitchen oils and vinegars for salad dressings, to mince and make frozen cubes of cooking herbs, and so on. All the work done with fresh herbs must be done as soon as possible, so do that work first.
- On the other side, dried herbs are the best for teas, tinctures, infused oils, incenses, etc. You can chop the herbs before or after they have dried, that is up to you; I prefer to do it first because the stems are softer to cut. Use trays lined with absorbent paper, or simply leave them on the floor over a mat of paper on an undisturbed, fresh and dark place. Do not dry them in the sun as the essential oils are highly volatile and the plants will lose power if sun dried. Once a day, turn the batch around for an even drying. Don’t discard the stems, as many plants contain more essential oils in them than in leaves or flowers.
- Sometimes, specially with wildharvested herbs, you will need to kill any bacteria/bugs living in them by oven drying. Keep your oven at the lowest temperature and leave the oven door slightly open for ventilation. After half an hour at around 50 Celsius degrees, bacteria or bugs will not survive and, though the plant’s power will be a little lower, it will be perfectly safe to ingest.
- Keep the roots aside and dry them separately, as the roots usually have the highest amount of water in the plant and need more time to dry than leaves or stems. As with herbs, you can slice/chop the root before drying or not as you prefer; again, I chop it first because most roots are almost impossible to cut when dry.
- Depending on your weather, herbs may take from 1 to 4 weeks to dry. Once they are crunchy and soft to the touch, they are ready to be placed in a glass or ceramic jar and labelled. Remember to add the date of harvesting, as you don’t want to use herbs that have been storaged for more than a year – you are not a butterfly collector, so USE what you have harvested! We used recycled and sterilized glass food jars, as amber/cobalt glass jars are really expensive; just keep them in a dark place, away from strong smells and, if possible, away from the kitchen.

iRobot Scooba Hacks
Shortly after we moved to New Mexico iRobot started making robots that could mop floors. This seemed like a great idea to us since we always seem to have dust blowing in through the windows or just being brought into the house with daily human and pet traffic. After five years of maintaining this mopping device I've learned a few tricks to keep it running with minimal expenses.
- You don't need to buy iRobot cleaning fluid. White vinegar works fine.
- A drop or two of essential oils (orange, mint, tea tree, geranium, etc) makes for a great clean room smell.
- Warm water will make for a smoother running robot
- The batteries will be a issue. I'm using a capacitive charger which can charge 1 to 5 batteries at a time. I run the batteries to zero between usage and take them all the way up to full with a low 150mA constant current charge overnight. While I have repacked the batteries with different chemistries (li-ion, ni-cd and nimh) my preference is towards buying pre-assembled 3rd party Ni-CD which seem to be the most robust.
- Ebay is a great source for used robots with "dead" batteries that sell for $10 - $30.

IMG 2957clean backplate
This is the LAST picture of the set of 8.
OK so the element works...hooray! But don't forget to DISCONNECT from the electricity supply before you complete the final steps.
I took the opportunity to clean the backplate. There was a lot of encrusted gunk on the back of the plate, partially blocking the fan vents..I wonder if this contributed to the element's demise? I replaced the oven bulb which had failed (15 watt SES 300 degree - I got a Philips T22 E14 about ?2). Replace the back plate with the 4 screws - you did keep them in a safe place didn't you? I took the opportunity to clean the glass on the oven door too. Wow...now we can actually see the stuff being cooked for the first time in a couple of years!
I then checked out the oven by starting at 100 degrees and checking the thermostat went out after a couple of minutes. then 150 degrees...another couple of minutes..then 200 and 300. Seemed ok.
real life part 1: oven cleaning
... had to clean the oven using the self-cleaner mechanism. It didn't help the smell any. And as I was standing there I realized I had a 'real life photo in the making'. So I grabbed my camera and clicked away. You'll have to forgive the sepia affect for all of these - I didn't have the heart to make it THAT life-like...
...by the way I chose to start cleaning it at 4:30 which meant that my planned dinner (yes, it needed to be baked) wasn't going to happen...
oh and although that might LOOK like a nice oven, the door handle has come apart 5 times now (3 while it was in use), it cooks unevenly and even with the drip catcher on the stovetop, I still manage to get liquid between the glass

Cleaning Of Hardwood Floors
I couldn't decide between this picture and the one I picked for my 365 today. I like this one for the light and shadows, but seriously, mopping as a 365 pic? Not so fun!!
I spent today scrubbing my old apartment spotless. I also moved some more stuff out that I left there due to laziness, and finished painting the walls that the sun is showing on in this room. I also cleaned the kitchen, bathroom, and my old room. I also... mopped!
I'm so tired its not even funny. My back is also in a lot of pain. I think I might break down tomorrow and call a physical therapist. I was attempting to ignore all of the angry crampy feelings my back was giving off all day, but when it started to burn I went and found my referal form, so yay for getting motivated, eh?

194/365 (July 30th):My 1st try at wet sanding aluminum.
1. Use the dremel to grind out deep scratches and nicks.
2. Dry sand with 330 Grit - it looked like hell at this point and I was nervous - but I surrendered to the process.
3. Wet sand with 600 Grit and lysol wipee's.
...4. Switch to 800 with the wipee's
5. Switch to 1000 Grit and instead of lysol wipee's which work great, I sprayed with WD40 and sanded with 1000 Grit.
6. Switch to 2000 Grit and WD40
7. Go over the piece on the 6" bench buffer - Red Rouge 1st. do 2 rounds buffing with the red rouge and a cotton (not sisal) wheel.
8. Switch to the blue rouge for the finish coat using a different wheel.
9. Wipe down good with clean cloth rags
10. Use Mothers aluminum polish & polish piece
11. apply 2 coats Rust-Oleum crystal clear enamel & buff it out.
1st Polishing Attempt - Fail/Do Over
Here's a shot of the rear hub after polishing. After wet sanding for about 15-20 minutes, I used the black emery on the spiral sewn wheel to cut. Then polished with the white rouge bar on a loose spun cotton wheel, then finally buffed out on a clean, very soft buffing wheel.
I'm not getting the results I want right now. I feel like I'm halfway to the mirror finish. There's still alot of imperfections in the metal. I'm wonder if that's because of a lack of sanding before hand, or improper use of polishing.

How Do I Clean An Oven : Maid Cleaning Service Inc
How Do I Clean An Oven
Made this today, its called a "tuscan apple cake".. though I'm not entirely sure why its 'tuscan'. Recpe was from a newspaper, can you believe it, though I have slightly modified it to suit my own likings. As always.
It is soft, moist, and the house fills with the most amazing smells as it bakes.
And it tastes beautiful slightly warmed from the oven, or cold a day later. Either way, its divine!!!
3 cups sliced apples ( usually about 5 medium apples)
5 TBSP unrefined, or brown. sugar
5 Tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 Tsp ground nutmeg or allspice
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup fruity olive oil (or light extra virgin olive oil - it seems to be ok)
1/2 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed - strain through tea strainer)
3 cups self raising flour
1 Tsp. vanilla essence
Mix sliced apples, 5 TBSP sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl and leave for at least 1/2 hour.
Beat together eggs and 2 cups sugar until creamy. Add olive oil, orange juice and vanilla, and then fold in sifted flour. Pour half the mixture into a large springform baking tin. Spoon the apples over the top, then top with the rest of the cake mixture. Bake in a moderate oven ( i bake at 180c) for 1/2hr, and then 150c for about 1 hour, or until a skewer removes clean from the middle.

Introducing the American Crocodile
Several have commented on how pale he looks--remember he is dried out, he's been on the bank sunning himself--if he were wet, he would look darker, but still much lighter than alligators.
Crocodiles and alligators belong to a group of reptiles called crocodilians, which are the largest of the living reptiles. Of the 23 different species of crocodilians in the world, 2 species are native to the United States, and south Florida is the only place where both of these species coexist. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) ranges throughout the southeastern United States, and Everglades alligators exist at the southern extreme of their range. American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus), on the other hand, inhabit coastal areas of south Florida where they are at the northern extreme of their range. American crocodiles also can be found on the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola, as well as along both coasts of southern Mexico and Central America, south to Ecuador on the Pacific coast of South America, and Venezuela on the Atlantic coast.
Alligators are more numerous in Florida than crocodiles, are darker, have a broader snout, and are typically found in freshwater habitats. Crocodiles, on the other hand, are rare and secretive creatures that inhabit coastal, brackish-(hence the brown shade of the water; it comes from tannin), and salt-water habitats. Although the aggressive reputation earned by the American crocodile’s distant, larger, man-eating cousins in Australia and Africa may inspire fear of crocodiles inhabiting the Everglades, conflict with humans rarely occurs because of the shy nature of American crocodiles. Like alligators, crocodiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature by basking in the sun or by moving to an area with warmer or cooler water. A basking crocodile may be surprised by an approaching person and quickly (and noisily) enter the water. This behavior might startle the person, but it should not be misunderstood. Crocodiles normally enter the water quietly; splashing away indicates that the crocodile is frightened and feeling stressed. Crocodiles sometimes can be seen sunning with their mouths open. This behavior is also a way of regulating body temperature and does not mean that the crocodile is acting aggressively toward people.

The federal standing for American Crocodiles is that they are a threatened species

This isn't how to care for classic vinyl!
I went through my dad's records that spent a number of years in a storage building. I decided to pull them out and try to see if they're savable. It's looking bad. I think I can get all the dirt, grime, and mildew out but what's concerning me is these records are bowing pretty badly. I've heard of a technique but it's a technique that'll take a couple weeks. So for now, I'll just try to get them cleaned.
And all I got was this lousy video...
Sorry, no new photo's this week. I uploaded two photos, I deleted two photos. As I mentioned in this video, which I recorded shortly after taking some new photos this week, I wasn't sure if I'd like anything I had just shot. I'm now pretty sure I don't. All you get this week is this lousy video of me with what looks like cupie doll hair!

Mumford & Sons, West London indie rock quartet, have created a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills & Nash with the might of Kings of Leon and the harmonies of Fleet Foxes. Sigh No More was recorded at Eastcoast Studios, where Arctic Monkeys, Brian Eno, Tindersticks and Laura Marling have honored their sound. The band teamed with producer Markus Dravs who has worked with such superstar acts as Arcade Fire, Bjork and Peter Gabriel. Sigh No More was recently released in the UK to critical accolades. The album debut in the UK iTunes Top 10 recently and is being lauded by tastemaker publications. The first single, Little Lion Man , is already being boasted as The Hottest Record in the World by Radio 1's Zane Lowe, and the band has been long listed for the BBC Sounds of 2008 Pool, which features the most promising new music talent.
Formed in 2007, that band's goal since day one has been to make music that matters. Before recording their debut, Mumford & Sons self produced three EP's and toured the UK extensively, bringing their rootsy rock across the country. The band recently wrapped a handful of well-received performances during the annual CMJ Music Marathon in New York, which left Time Out NY to comment, The Brit combo has a spine-tingling way to harmony.

how to clean a reusable a/c filter
I have been trying to find the perfect cleaning stuffs for the reusable a/c filter and I think I have found it with Woolite's rug cleaner. I sprayed this stuff on both sides of the filter and let sit for 10 minutes, then rinsed the filter until the water ran clear(took about 1 1/2 minutes) Then I allowed the filter to dry before I placed the filter back in the a/c unit. I use one of those throw away filters in the a/c unit until this thingy here dries up. I always try to clean or check my a/c filter once a month. Oh yeah-I don't throw away the throw away filter until it becomes nasty(just put it away in the closet)

Thetis gives her son Achilles his weapons newly forged by Hephaestus, detail of an Attic black-figure hydria
Homer, Iliad 18. 136 & 18. 368 - 19. 23 :
"[Thetis addresses her son Akhilleus at Troy :] `I am coming to you at dawn and as the sun rises bringing armour to you from lord (anax) Hephaistos.’
So she spoke, and turned, and went away from her son, and turning now to her sisters of the sea she spoke to them : `Do you now go back into the wide fold of the water to visit the ancient of the sea and the house of our father, and tell him everything. I am going to tall Olympos and to Hephaistos the glorious smith (klytotekhnes), if he might be willing to give me for my son renowned and radiant armour.'
She spoke, and they plunged back beneath the wave of the water, while she the goddess Thetis of the silver feet went onward to Olympos, to bring back to her son the glorious armour . . . Thetis of the silver feet came to the house of Hephaistos imperishable, starry, and shining among the immortals, built in bronze for himself by the god of the dragging footsteps. She found him sweating as he turned here and there to his bellows busily . . . Kharis of the shining veil saw her as she came forward, she, the lovely goddess the renowned strong-armed one had married. She came, and caught her hand and called her by name and spoke to her : `Why is it, Thetis of the light robes, you have come to our house now? We honour you and love you; but you have not come much before this. But come in with me so I may put entertainment before you.'
She spoke, and, shining among divinities, led the way forward and made Thetis sit down in a chair that was wrought elaborately and splendid with silver nails, and under it was a footstool. She called to Hephaistos the renowned smith (klytotekhnes) and spoke a word to him : `Hephaistos, come this way; here is Thetis, who has need of you.'
Hearing her the renowned smith of the strong arms answered her : `Then there is a goddess we honour and respect in our house. She saved me when I suffered much at the time of my great fall through the will of my own brazen-faced mother, who wanted to hide me for being lame. Then my soul would have taken much suffering had not Eurynome and Thetis caught me and held me . . . Therefore set out before her fair entertainment while I am putting away my bellows and all my instruments.'
He spoke, and took the huge blower off from the block of the anvil limping; and yet his shrunken legs moved lightly beneath him. He set the bellows away from the fire, and gathered and put away all the tools with which he worked in a silver strongbox. Then with a sponge he wiped clean his forehead, and both hands, and his massive neck and hairy chest, and put on a tunic, and took up a heavy stick in his hand, and went to the doorway limping. And in support of their master moved his attendants. These are golden, and in appearance like living young women. There is intelligence in their hearts, and there is speech in them and strength, and from the immortal gods they have learned how to do things. These stirred nimbly in support of their master, and moving near to where Thetis sat in her shining chair, Hephaistos caught her [Thetis] by the hand and called her by name and spoke a word to her : `Why is it, Thetis of the light robes, you have come to our house now? We honour you and love you; but you have not come much before this. Speak forth what is in your mind. My heart is urgent to do it if I can, and if it is a thing that can be accomplished.'
Then in turn Thetis answered him, letting the tears fall : `Hephaistos, is there among all the goddesses on Olympos one who in her heart has endured so many grim sorrows as the griefs Zeus, son of Kronos, has given me beyond others? Of all the other sisters of the sea he gave me to a mortal, to Peleus, Aiakos' son, and I had to endure mortal marriage though much against my will. And now he, broken by mournful old age, lies away in his halls. Yet I have other troubles. For since he has given me a son to bear and to raise up . . . Now I come to your knees; so might you be willing to give me for my short-lived son a shield and a helmet and two beautiful greaves fitted with clasps for the ankles and a corselet. What he had was lost with his steadfast companion [Patroklos] when the Trojans killed him. Now my son lies on the ground, heart sorrowing.'
Hearing her the renowned smith (periklytos) of the strong arms, the lame one (amphigyeeis) answered her : `Do not fear. Let not these things be a thought in you mind. And I wish that I could hide him away from death and its sorrow at that time when his hard fate comes upon him, as surely as there shall be fine armour for him, such as another man out of many men shall wonder at, when he looks on it.’
So he spoke, and left her there, and went to his bellows. He turned these toward the fire and gave them their orders for working. And the bellows, all twenty of them, blew on the crucibles, from all directions blasting forth wind to blow the flames high now as he hurried to be at this place and now at an

Satyanarayan Puja At Ramesh Garuds House Bandra
147,040 items / 1,125,111 views
There are a few house Ganpatis I shoot every year when I shoot the Ganpati pandals one of them is the Garuds the Pamaks and Farzans house ganpati.
I shoot this simply to show you the hospitality of the house that brings in Lord Ganeshs their faith their love and the sadness when the Lord leaves their house to go back to his own house in the sea.
So I blog and through my blogs take you time and again into a journey of life in a city called Amchi Mumbai.. a city that can make you or break you within seconds.
A city of hopes dreams and disillusionment.
I have blogged Bandra my immediate surroundings the lives the people the cats dogs goats .. the faceless fervor in the nooks crannies I have blogged filth garbage apathy and sometimes the eunuch soul of the people who stay here.
Nothing changes not the filth the garbage openly displayed for all and sundry.
And because a good photographer shoots good things of life as a photo blogger I shoot the underbelly of pain the beggars and misery and more pain.
I shoot crap I shoot shit I am known in colloquial undertones as the Rastachap Photographer of Bandra.
Roadside photographer as compared to street photographer.
With dark clouds looming in the horizon of my own life my blogging too is coming to the end of its shelf life.
And this is a fact, i now realize as my wife says you shoot the same things over and over again dont you get sick and tired.
Actually I shoot because I have a camera that is attuned to a poets soul, I shoot life as it shoots me.
I shoot simple ordinary mundane things things you dont shoot with a Mach 5.
But come what may I could never shoot cinematographic life with a mobile phone.
It just would not fit in on my mobile phone the first phone I have not changed since 4 years.
So I taught Marziya the importance of shooting pictures on my own Nikon D 80 , and as she has been away for over 3 weeks my life has lost its color and mirth.
Marziya will be 3 years old in Nov, and when I give Marziya my camera she will not take it without first pacing the long strap around her neck.
She knows how to hold the camera firmly in her hands as though she is holding the breath of her life , she learnt to feel the camera its contours the buttons as I would blindfold her and than ask her to shoot.. So she ended up teaching me photography.
About Satyanarayan puja from Wikipedia.
The Satyanarayan Puja is a Hindu religious observance. It is a ritual performed by Hindus before/on any major occasion like marriage, house warming ceremony etc. It can also be performed on any day for any reason. It is believed the ceremony originated in Bengal as Satya Pir ritual performed by all communities (Hindu, Muslim and buddhists) and later in 1800s morphed into Satyanarayan puja.,,
The Satyanarayana Puja is usually done on the Purnima day of every month (the day of the full moon) or a Sankranti. It is also done on special occasions and during times of achievements as an offering of gratitude to the Lord. These occasions include marriage, graduation, new job, and the purchase of a new home to name a few. In addition, it is said that a devotional performance of this puja will bear children to couples trying to start a family.
The puja starts by a prayer to Lord Ganesha, to remove all obstacles that may occur as a result of incorrectly performing the puja. This is done by chanting all the names of Lord Ganesha and offering prasad (a food offering, usually consisting of one of Lord Ganesha's favorite foods - modak, a sugar and coconut mixture, or ladu) and the showering of flower petals.
Another part of the prayer involves a prayer to the Navagraha's - the nine important celestial beings in the universe. They consist of Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the moon), Angaaraka/Chevaai (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru aka Bruhaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu (the head of the Demon snake), and Ketu (the tail of the Demon snake).
The rest of the puja consists of worship to Satyanarayana, an extremely benevolent form of Lord Vishnu. First "panchamritam" is used to clean the place where the deity is placed. After placing the deity in the correct position, Satyanaraya swami is worshipped. Names of Satyanarayana are chanted along with offering of a variety of prasad (including a mixture of milk, honey, ghee/butter, yogurt, sugar) and flower petals.
Another requirement of the puja is that the story of the puja be heard among all those observing and partaking in the pooja. The story involves the origin of the puja, the benefits of it, and the potential mishaps that may occur with the careless performance of the puja.
The prayer concludes with an Aarti, which consists of revolving a small fire-lit-lamp in the vicinity of an image of the Lord. After the puja is over, participants and observers of the pooja are required to ingest in the prasad that was offered and blessed by the Lord.
It is told that Satyanarayan Katha
Charlie - 29thApril2011
The last photo of charlie outside. I've kept him indoors for 9 days now. He actually doesn't look well in this photo. He's been giving me a lot of problems spraying for about 4 weeks now. It seemed to start with the possums spraying on my verandah, and Charlie became quite anxious. He's really jealous of Midnight too now. It's been hard for me to clean up his spray, and work out how to settle him.
I'm keeping him inside so he doesn't get triggered by the possum smells outside. He also was going all over the neighbourhood and I didn't like that because of bad character neighbours. He used to pretty much stay in my property until his anxiety became triggered. I could supervise him outside and he would stay. Then he kept running off. I just want to settle him down.
I noticed he has this dreadful coughing fit about once a day nearly every day for the last week. I thought it was something caught in his throat, but now I think its flem irritating his lungs. At one point it looked like he had blood in his urine, but now it's a clear yellow again.
I'm trying to work with Charlie. He's done this before about 4 years ago, and it was stray cats walking through my yard at 4am that would set him off to go and spray everywhere in the house. I found simply by locking him in the laundry at night, he felt safe and stopped spraying. This time it's more difficult. He sprays anytime, and he holds his wee to spray, so I have to put him in the kitty litter and keep putting him in till he wees, so he has less to spray with. I have to keep an eye on him, and lock him in my room if I go out. I also am keeping Midnight in to tame him, because it's really cold at night now, and it was hard to get him in at night.
Charlie is strling to share the space with Midnight. When I'm not looking he nips Midnight pretty hard.
This problem really gets me down. I don't want him like this. Yet I can't let him go to surrender him. I can't just leave him outside, because I don't want him spraying everywhere on my verandah etc. and I don't want any harm to come to him from spraying in other peoples yards.
I will endeavour to keep trying. Some days Charlie does settle and purrs, some days he's uptight and won't purr, and tries to sneakily outsmart me and spray when I'm not looking. I've put him in the bathroom overnight sometimes, because he started to spray in my room, before I woke, and I think he heard the possums on the roof and it triggers him now. But I'm not sure.
He showed signs of anxiety about a week before the spraying started.

Artist: WEATHER REPORT
Title: HEAVY WEATHER
Street Release Date: 09/23/1997
Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter didn't truly fulfill Weather Report's artistic and commercial potential until they brought on-board a bassist who could function as an equal partner in the musical equation, like co-founder Miroslav Vitous, whose main shortcoming was his inability to play funk. In renegade bassist Jaco Pastorius, the band found a formidable composer and improvisor, who possessed deep roots in funk and R&B, yet was equally at home in modern jazz and Afro-Cuban settings. Not coincidentally, the presence of this innovative fretless bassist on Heavy Weather gave Weather Report the rhythmic/melodic dimension it had been missing since Vitous's departure, as evidenced by his voice-like declamations on Zawinul's ballad "A Remark You Made." On Zawinul's chart-topping, big band-styled arrangement of "Birdland," Pastorius provided the kind of big, sweeping orchestral gestures the tune required, while on the shifting canvas of Wayne Shorter's "Harlequin," the bassist's ability to articulate complex chords allowed him to function as a string section unto himself. And on his own "Havona," Pastorius not only soloed with horn-like artistry, but combined with drummer Alex Acuna and percussionist Manolo Badrena to give Weather Report its funkiest rhythm section ever. --Chip Stern

1987 Wimbledon men's final
Pat Cash d. Ivan Lendl, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-5.
This boxscore was published in the New York Times.
The service winners line up with my own count of service return errors.
My count also agrees with the double-faults and the total points won.
But Cash is credited with one ace more than I counted, and the two players between them are given 22 more "placement winners" (ie, clean non-service winners) than I counted.
The boxscore seems to have an excess of 23 points, beyond the total points won. One category of points is not reported: forced errors. However I did my own count of the forced and unforced errors; this allows us to suppose how many errors the statistician counted as forced, since we know how many were reported as unforced.
Not including service return errors (which are already represented in the box as service winners), I have Cash making 23 forced errors, and Lendl 15.
Not including double-faults or service returns, I have Cash making 5 unforced errors, and Lendl 15.
That's a total of 58 errors between them. In the boxscore, 29 unforced errors are reported -- exactly half of the total errors. If we suppose that the statistician counted 29 forced errors, then there is an excess of 23 points, beyond the reported total points.
My calculation of the service percentages barely differs from the boxscore: I have Lendl actually serving at 61%.
I have Cash winning 28 of 43 approaches, and Lendl 41 of 89.
I counted the approaches just as they were counted for this boxscore, ie, not including net rushes behind serves that drew return errors.
Those approaches are represented in the "service winners" category; Lendl and Cash followed all those serves into net.
Lendl stayed back on one second serve during the match, but otherwise both players followed all their serves into net.

It is time for the truth to be told...
On July 2, 1947 something crashed in the desert outside of Roswell, New Mexico. An explosion of light and sound made the sheep wail, the chickens squawk, and the children scream. And then the ranchers heard a noise they thought could only have come from the devil himself.
For forty years, Majestic Agency director Wilfred Stone helped the CIA pretend the landing never happened. Then his conscience got the better of him.
This is the real story, told to reporter Nicholas A. Duke by the guilt-racked shell of the man who once worked tirelessly to cover it all up. It is a truth so terrifying that Whitley Strieber had to call it fiction.
The Majestic Theatre, a Broadway theatre located at 245 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan, is one of the largest Broadway theatres with 1607 seats Traditionally, it has been used as a venue for major musical theatre productions.
Among the notable shows that have premiered at the Majestic are Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The Music Man (1957), Camelot (1960), A Little Night Music (1973), and The Wiz (1975). It was also the second home of 42nd Street and the third home of 1776.
The theatre has housed The Phantom of the Opera since it opened on January 26, 1988. With more than 8,000 performances, it currently is the longest-running production in Broadway history.
Majestic Falls on McDowell Creek, east of Lebanon, Oregon. Beautiful, beautiful time of the year here.
The exposure here is a little dark, but I decided to keep it that way because I thought the falls itself deserved all the attention. It's a gorgeous waterfall, and bigger than it looks here. The observation deck is close enough to it to warrant a wide-angle lens, but now I wish I had gotten a little closer to those cascades of water there at the top left.

Lemonade Clean-Up Crew
Since it's a holiday and a hot, sunny day, we asked Mommy if she would please make us some lemonade... She said that she would if we would clean up the mess afterward, so here we are working on the leftover stuff...
Timmy: OK, I'm in charge. Monkey and T-Munkey, scoop up the pulp and seeds. Arnold, wipe down the cutting board and, Mr. Inbisible, you pick up the peels. Also, everybody be careful not to sling this stuff around too much! By the way, call me Beldar.
T-Munkey: Ow, it seems that I've gotten lemon juice in my eye...
Timmy: Whatever you do, don't touch your eyes!
T-Munkey: Too late. It appears that I've blinded myself in both eyes now. No worries -- stiff upper lip and all that -- I can still help!
Arnold: Hey! You've scooped me up, you ninney!
Monkey: Ouch!!! I've flung pulp in my eye too...
Timmy: Well, do the best you can with your remaining eye!
Mr. Inbisible: Hey hey hey look - I be's a chiken!
Monkey: I'm filing for Workman's Comp.
Timmy: Good help is impossible to find...
This little plant has grown opportunistically in our garden (Oxfordshire, UK). It doesn't look or smell like much, but its leaves when rubbed give off a powerful, almost artificial lemon smell: like lemon Smints or cleaning fluid.
The internet keeps saying "lemon mint" or "lemon bee balm" (monarda citriorda) but I don't know. I think I'm being influenced by (a) the smell and (b) the fact that it's growing near our existing mint pots.
The leaf shape and arrangement doesn't look like UK lemon mint at all. No flowers but it's only appeared this summer.

Clean of Heart: Overcoming Habitual Sins against Purity
Clean of Heart is written for practicing Catholics who accept all the teachings of the Church, yet are still ensnared by pornography and self-abuse. There is hope! Through the Sacraments, God provides all the grace one needs to become pure. No matter how long one has indulged in pornography or how deep one has sunk into the mire of vice, Our Lord can still break the addiction! What makes Clean of Heart different? First, it is written from a Catholic point-of-view. While Evangelical Christians have many books and programs for pornography addicts, there are few titles on the market for Catholics. Clean of Heart consists of forty-three daily meditations which draw from the power of the Sacraments and the wisdom of the Saints (elements lacking in many Evangelical books). Second, Clean of Heart is a surprisingly chaste book. It contains no obscenities or explicit testimonies" which may be an occasion of sin for some. The focus is on attaining a clean heart rather than recalling past sins.
Nets of fond memories
I was cleaning/reorganizing/fixing the storage room with my parents today and I stumbled upon old school memories. Nets of fond memories sealed in those ancient cartridges.
Just thought I'd share them with you guys.

Step 2 : Cleaning the olives
The second step in the oil extraction process is cleaning the olives. The olives pass through a blower that blasts leaves and tree and dirt particles off the fruit. They are then washed and passed on to be crushed and afterwards mixed in large barrels.
