In his view the Mall was to be the foremost avenue of the city, the so-called “Grand Avenue.” It was to run west from the Capitol to a point directly south of the President’s House where its terminus would be crowned by an equestrian statue of George Washington. According to L’Enfant’s plan, the Mall was to be “four hundred feet in breadth, and about a mile in length, bordered by gardens, ending in a slope from the houses on each side.”

To realize L’Enfant’s dream things started slowly and then petered out completely. Then the Civil War came and the Mall grounds were used for military purposes, such as bivouacking and parading troops, slaughtering cattle and producing arms. In 1872, at 6th and B Streets, a 14 acre tract was given to the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad for the construction of a depot. The railroad was also granted permission to lay tracks north to south across part of the Mall.

The National Mall was on the verge of disappearing altogether when, in 1902, Senator James McMillan of Michigan headed a commission to transform the country’s primary city park. The hundred years of unenacted grounds plans dating back to L’Enfant’s original ideas were examined. The McMillan Commission submitted their report to Congress. Their plan called for the restoration, development, and supplementation of the “Grand Avenue” ideal proposed by L’Enfant. The core of the Mall was to be a broad grass carpet, typical of those in Europe, 300 feet in breath and running the entire length of the Mall grounds, bordered on each side by four rows of American elm trees. Public buildings were to border the whole, separated from the elms by narrow roadways. The railroad station was removed from the area in 1909. Swamps would be drained; canals filled. All buildings would conform to a Neo-classical design standard calling to mind the tneets of ancient Rome and Athens.

Anniversary Cookie Bouquet

The Cookie Bouquet I made for my husband for our anniversary

I know i know.. its not fabulous and the best baker ever bouquet but i think it came out ok. and the cookies are delicious!!

Sugar Cookie Recipie

6 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
2 cups butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract or desired flavoring (I like almond myself)
1 tsp. salt

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Mix dry ingredients and add a little at a time to butter mixture. Mix until flour is completely incorporated and the dough comes together.

Chill for 1 to 2 hours (or see Hint below)

Roll to desired thickness and cut into desired shapes. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350
degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until just beginning to turn brown around the edges. This recipe
can make up to 5-dozen 3” cookies.

It came up in our yard. Flower is about 3/8 inch (5 mm) diameter or less. Plant is about 2 inches tall. I think it is so beautitul and delicate but my husband hates all the weeds and mows them as soon as he sees them. :'-( He never understands the beauty and also he thinks I am nuts loving wildflowers and weeds.

One lady came to dinner the other night and mentioned she picked a beautiful white flower and thought it was so beautiful she wanted to share it with her fellow camper, so she left it outside her tent. By the time said camper emerged from her tent the flower had wilted in the sun. I remember our boatman Travis' eyes lighting up upon over-hearing this. Wait - what kind of flower did you pick? And she goes on to describe and we all start looking at each other thinking oh shit, pretty soon this woman is going to be thoroughly delusional, but thankfully, nothing happened. It is said, that even if you camp near one of these plants, you can have some frightfully intense dreams. On the trip we heard many a story of what kind of reactions people have to this plant, and the common theme is that it's not so much the plant that hurts people, it's people hurting themselves when on the plant because they are a total danger to themselves.

Like San Fran60s, More San Fran60s is darker, edgier, and more intimate than anything on the subject before. In addition to the requisite sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, there is murder, madness, and God. One of the murders officially ends the Summer of Love. Jim Morrison makes an appearance, as do William Burroughs and Janis Joplin in the San Fran60s. LSD and free love, Haight-Ashbury and the Hell’s Angels, the Hip and the Straight, it’s all in these stories.
And it all really happened. The stories are based on my journals and experiences and there is less invention than in most memoirs. I have lived in and around San Francisco since 1965 and present myself, friends, and acquaintances as prime specimens. In the Sixties and Seventies, I was a free lance journalist, among other things. Now I am a retired English teacher.
Among the stories in More San Fran 60s, there is “Long Hair,” in which a groupie, who is also a PhD candidate, is in love with a guy she finds repulsive because his hair isn’t long enough. In “The Magic Mountain Music Festival and Fantasy Fun Faire,” it’s the first ever hip outdoor rock concert, headlined by the Doors, and the chick he didn’t dare even fantasize about has chosen him. Or has she? In “There Is Only One Misfortune” two men, a brilliant mystic, who is also a successful businessman, and a hippie intellectual, try to reach an ultimate understanding of the universe in a single, brutal eight hour argument. “The Neocon” is a character study spanning four decades from the Sixties in San Francisco through atrocity-ravaged Guatemala to Washington today.
The stories range in tone from comic to harrowing to lyrical. All are interconnected but each is self-contained so they can be read in any order. These collections could be thought of as a fractured novel in which even the narrative structure expresses that era.
