Bankowski arrived early in the afternoon, along with co-worker Kasey Corbit, to finish the floor. "Now it's time to stink up the place!" Bankowski said after they finished initial prepping and started staining. Bankowski said they begin with one coat of stain, buff it, add another coat of stain and do another buffing. They then add a coat of polyurethane, paint the lines and add one last coat of polyurethane. The original gym floor, installed in 1986, experienced water damage from a leaky roof over a year ago, said Corne Prozesky, associate director for facilities and operations at the center. A committee of students, and engineers from the SIUC physical plant, were organized and sent to visit local high schools and universities to determine the best replacement hardwood floor. “We wanted to replace the floor with a system that’s better for your knees and joints, so we tried to inspect the floors with those specifications in mind,” Prozesky said. -- Steve Matzker | Daily Egyptian best vacuum for hardwood floors The Shop-Vac Industrial Back Pack vacuum features a long-life 2.0 HP motor and a comfortable, adjustable backpack harness system. The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live (Susanka) Ten years ago, Sarah Susanka started a revolution in home design with a deceptively simple message: quality should always come before quantity. Now, the book that celebrated that bold declaration is back in a special anniversary edition. In this landmark home design book, America's superstar residential architect provides homeowners the guidance and language to get what they want: a house that is better not bigger and one that emphasizes comfort, beauty, and a high level of detail no matter how small it is. Featuring a new package and introduction by Susanka as well as 16 additional pages that explore three new Not So Big Houses, this 10th anniversary edition is very big news. When describing a favorite room in the house, do you find yourself using terms such as "expansive," "formal," and "spacious"--a marble foyer or a formal dining room perhaps? Or do the words "cozy," "intimate," and "warm" come to mind--a cheery little breakfast nook or a window seat complete with plenty of pillows and a breathtaking view? More than likely, you--like thousands of other homeowners--are drawn to the more personal spaces in your home, where comfort, beauty, and efficiency meet. In The Not So Big House, respected architect Sarah Susanka and coauthor Kira Obolensky address our affinity for the "smaller, more personal spaces" and propose "clear, workable guidelines for creating homes that serve both our spiritual needs and our material requirements." The heart of the not-so-big house--which is not "just a small house ... [but] a smaller house," that uses "less space to give greater quality of life," and is designed to not only "accommodate the lifestyles of its occupants" but also to express "our values and our personalities," is discussed in chapter 1, entitled "Bigger Isn't Better." Susanka's urging for homeowners to get creative with their space as well as loads of ideas to encourage that creativity are covered in "Rethinking the House" and "Making Not So Big Work." Discussions of specific needs, such as a home for one and designing for kids, can be found in "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous," while "Dreams, Details, and Dollars" gets down to the nuts and bolts of the operation, looking at quality versus quantity, budgeting, and what "low end," "middle ground," and "high end" really mean in home design and construction. Lastly, the authors look at the home of the future, which involves simplifying, recycling, reducing waste, and using energy-efficient construction. With more than 200 color photographs, as well as floor plans and Susanka and Obolensky's intelligent and lively dialogue, The Not So Big House is perfect for homeowners ready to rethink their space. --Stefanie Hargreaves (18) 6 The birdhouse in beta interior model Ok finally I loaded up the birdhouse model. vintage chair This chair was amazing!! The mom and dad had this handed down to them from the mom's grandmother. I forget the name of the flower that we have in the shot, but they are so fragrant and the head of the flower is quite heavy. I had to straighten the photo a little because my tripod is broken and it tilts when I have it in the vertical position (guess that's what I get for buying a cheap $30 tripod then letting the kids play with it) I used Rita's Coffee Shop processing actions: Perfect Portrait and Baby powder room. Hard Work Pays Off I scrubbed the kitchen floor for several hours, and was amazed that there was wooden floorboards underneath! I live in the cheapest, oldest rental flat around, and the floor wasn't even nearly this clean when I moved in. To be honest, I'm quite proud of my effort. I don't often do any hard work, and this reminds me why some people do. Bringing Down the House Lonely white yuppie lawyer meets woman on internet. Woman is street-smart soul-sister ex-con who teaches white boy a thing or two about Respect and Love. Much hilarity ensues. (Well, two out of three ain't bad.) But just as the odd couple vehicle for Queen Latifah and Steve Martin can't even seem to get its cartoonish formula down straight, the film's hip-hop laden song-score (co-produced by Latifah) offers up a few bright moments from some contemporary hip-hop royalty (Foxy Brown's sassy "Whatcha Gonna Do," Latifah's soulful "Better Than the Rest," the pop-R&B of Kelly Price's "Ain't Nobody"). N.E.R.D.'s hypnotic "Rock Star" and Mr. Cheeks slinky "Move Somethin'" inject some much-needed edge into proceedings that too often push tasty street beats off the plate for heaping rations of warmed over McHip-Hop. --Jerry McCulley (13) Dancing With Myself Yes, this picture was inspired by the Billy Idol song. We had planned to sand the floor ourselves - I'd done a course and had already hired the drum sander! - but the fiasco with the nailguns and floorboards meant we couldn't get it done. I had to call up these guys to come in and do the sanding for us. It's lucky we did in the end, even though it cost us $1000, because they did a much better job than we would have. The floorboards we bought from S&L were 2-3 mm thicker than the ones from our original floor, and they levelled the whole floor. It took them a whole day and three full garbage bags full of sawdust to get it level. Then the next day, they did with the rotary sander. Just In! Price TBA Floor Buffers and Sanders. HARDING FLOORING. CONFESSIONS DANCE FLOOR. FLOORING DIRECTORY. Harding Flooring
Warren G. Harding (The American Presidents Series) President Nixon’s former counsel illuminates another presidency marked by scandal Warren G. Harding may be best known as America’s worst president. Scandals plagued him: the Teapot Dome affair, corruption in the Veterans Bureau and the Justice Department, and the posthumous revelation of an extramarital affair. Raised in Marion, Ohio, Harding took hold of the small town’s newspaper and turned it into a success. Showing a talent for local politics, he rose quickly to the U.S. Senate. His presidential campaign slogan, “America’s present need is not heroics but healing, not nostrums but normalcy,” gave voice to a public exhausted by the intense politics following World War I. Once elected, he pushed for legislation limiting the number of immigrants; set high tariffs to relieve the farm crisis after the war; persuaded Congress to adopt unified federal budget creation; and reduced income taxes and the national debt, before dying unexpectedly in 1923. In this wise and compelling biography, John W. Dean—no stranger to controversy himself—recovers the truths and explodes the myths surrounding our twenty-ninth president’s tarnished legacy. (17) 1st floor hall, Auburn This neo-classical house, designed by Levi Weeks for Lyman Harding in 1812, is dominated by a giant portico with Roman Ionic columns. The two doorways are based on traditional Palladian motifs. The main house is the most architecturally significant building dating to the territorial period because it introduced academic architecture to the Mississippi Territory. It is historically important as the residence of attorney Lyman Harding, one of the wealthiest and most influential citizens of Natchez during the territorial period, legal counsel for Aaron Burr at his arraignment in 1807, and Mississippi's first Attorney General. Auburn's two-story portico is one of the earliest in the South, pre-dating similar porticoes at the University of Virginia and those added in the 1820s to the White House and to Arlington in Virginia. The house and its outbuildings are National Historic Landmarks and Mississippi Landmarks. scene of the death of an American President In 1923, Warren G. Harding's term as President ended suddenly when he died at the Palace Hotel, in Room 8064, an eighth floor suite that overlooks Market Street. At once heartbreaking and life affirming, Tinkers is an elegiac meditation on love, loss, illness, faith, and the fierce beauty of nature. Pulitzer Prize, American Library Association Notable Book, PEN / Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers Award “In Paul Harding’s stunning first novel, we find what readers, writers and reviewers live for.”—San Francisco Chronicle “There are few perfect debut American novels. Walter Percy’s The Moviegoer and Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird come to mind. So does Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. To this list ought to be added Paul Harding’s devastating first book, Tinkers. . . . Harding has written a masterpiece.” —John Freeman, National Public Radio “Tinkers is truly remarkable. It achieves and sustains a unique fusion of language and perception. Its fine touch plays over the textured richnesses of very modest lives, evoking again and again a frisson of deep recognition, a sense of primal encounter with the brilliant, elusive world of the senses. It confers on the reader the best privilege fiction can afford, the illusion of ghostly proximity to other human souls.” —Marilynne Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Home, Gilead, and Housekeeping “[Tinkers is] a novel that you’ll want to savor. . . . The Complete Kit as shipped to your home (6) Ten Inches to Spare I'm pumping out about ten gallons a minute as the concrete dries and that lets the water level drop a few inches below the new floor level. I put a foot of sand on top of everything toobsorbe that slick you get on the very top layer when you our concrete underwater and to weight everything down so i get a good seal across the top of the gravel pit I created at the bottom of the ten inch pipe. As soon as I stop pumping it will rise two feet in a short time but since i made the pipes taller the hole will stay dry. This doesn't cut down on how deep I can build the bunker but it does take away from the highwater mark if i ever had a flood so the main bunker will be just a single story to keep things simple over the years. I don't want to rely on a pump when gravity can do it and since this officially will need to be stairs down from the main level I am going to make a permanent basin to suck out the sand slurry and then double as a 600 gallon emergency flood basin as a back up to the natural drain. I'll determine the high mark over a period of a time then go a foot above that and curve it back down in a 180 to a drop about an inch above the floor. If I ever am gone for a lengthy time with a broken pipe or if the big house would burn then get swamped with water from the firemen it will still drain on its own and pull a siphon up from the basin to get the last of it with no moving parts or power needed. The observation well pipe which is the deepest and smallest in the middle and separated from the gravel pit at the very top of the water table by about 40 feet of fine white sand then courser pea gravel rises about three feet right now and would be artisian for a time if I added a valve at the bottom. Oakland California Temple Located in the city of Oakland, California at 4770 Lincoln Ave, it is the only temple built with a modern five-spire design and exhibits an Oriental motif. The exterior of the temple is reinforced concrete faced with sierra white granite from Raymond, California. On the north and south faces of the temple are two decorative friezes, and is the last temple to have such. The back (south side) is a depiction of Christ descending from Heaven to the people of the American continent soon after his resurrection in the holy land. The front (north side) illustrates Christ preaching His Gospel to the people. Within the front garden courtyard there is a statue of children in front of a bronze plaque bearing a scripture from 3 Nephi 17, telling how Christ blessed the children during his visit to the people of ancient America. The temple sits on a prominent site in the Oakland hills and has become a local landmark. Through the front courtyard are stairways which lead to the temple terrace situated above the ground floor of the temple. From the temple grounds and terrace are spectacular views of the Bay Area including downtown Oakland, the Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island, downtown San Francisco, and on a clear day, the Golden Gate Bridge. The Grounds are accented by flowers, palm trees, and a formal-style man-made river running from one fountain to the other. The temple was built on an 18.3-acre (74,000 m?) plot, has 4 ordinance rooms, 7 sealing rooms, and has a total floor area of 95,000 square feet (8,800 m?).[1] The Oakland Temple Visitor Center phone number is 510-531-1475. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor. This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. Through Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming-of-age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as growing up. What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. Charlie is a freshman. And while's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age, and gender, a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles that many kids face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with his best friend's recent suicide. Charlie's letters take on the intimate feel of a journal as he shares his day-to-day thoughts and feelings: I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they're here. If they like their jobs. Or us. And I wonder how smart they were when they were fifteen. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It's like looking at all the students and wondering who's had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why. With the help of a teacher who recognizes his wisdom and intuition, and his two friends, seniors Samantha and Patrick, Charlie mostly manages to avoid the depression he feels creeping up like kudzu. When it all becomes too much, after a shocking realization about his beloved late Aunt Helen, Charlie retreats from reality for awhile. But he makes it back in due time, ready to face his sophomore year and all that it may bring. Charlie, sincerely searching for that feeling of "being infinite," is a kindred spirit to the generation that's been slapped with the label X. --Brangien Davis Standing on the fringes of life... offers a unique perspective. INSTALLING LAMINATE FLOORING IN KITCHEN : OIL RUBBED BRONZE FLOOR LAMP. Installing Laminate Flooring In Kitchen
Kitchen before and after Our kitchen had wallpaper that I really despised...and I already knew that I had wanted to paint it a warm cranberry color that continues throughout the family room, opposite the kitchen area. We ripped out the microwave and installed a new stainless steel one to match our new fridge. Eventually we'll rip out the tile counters and replace them with a nice granite countertop. We also added some warmth by hanging drapes over the kitchen sink in matching gold and cranberry colors. We ripped out the original hardwood floors (which were damaged) and installed laminate flooring through out the entire bottom floor. My new kitchen is perfect for my needs! My kitchen - kinda The top picture is what I'm using for a kitchen at this time. A toaster oven & electric skillet. The bottom picture is my real kitchen. February 1 we began demo on the kitchen and took the walls down to the studs. Tonight we installed the lights. The fridge sits in the middle of the room so we can get around. The walls are a silver/grey and the ceiling wood boards have been stained black. Very modern. My husband built custome cabinets and we hope to install them after the barnwood laminate floor is installed. The floor is on order at Lowe's. Expected delivery date 3/15/2010. Angela Adams Living Room This is the living room and I was mainly inspired by the warmth in Southern Utah. I used leather floor tile to ground the room, the light colored walls to portray the sunlight, curves to show softness and the shape of the sun. The colors are also inspired by Southern Utah. I wanted to keep it relatively simple. The rug is a custom design inspired by the twisted dead trees in Bryce Canyon against the blue sky. The Weird Part of the Floor This is the odd floor, where the old concrete already was and where it meets the new concrete. There was no way we'd be able to level the floor here because of the already-existing door. So my dad-in-law got creative and made this step and somewhat of an incline to the door. Hence the reason we got ceramic tile and didn't use hardwood like we did in the living room.
