FROM 2006: My middle son, Conner (usually referred to as “Conner Man”),
then age 8, sleeping with his best buddy in the whole world, “Baby Man”. My
former MIL purchased said Baby Man (a little terry cloth doll who wore blue
bib overalls and a cap) at a yard sale for a quarter when Conner was about
six months old. Conner’s dad had a fit – “Don’t give my SON a baby doll!”
We told the homophobe that it wasn’t a baby DOLL, it was obviously a BOY, so
it was a baby MAN. The name stuck and Conner quickly became unbelievably
attached to the thing. So much so, that I had to find another, a reasonably
close match made by Baby B’Gosh at Toys R Us, so that I could at least wash
the thing on occasion. Eventually they’d wear out, due to Conner’s intense
love that could only be expressed by slobbering, chewing, etc. Over the
years, there were roughly about half a dozen Baby Men purchased, but the
original was the one Conner was the most attached to, so he just got patched
and patched and patched, like some kind of bionic thing. One of these is
(finally) in storage as a keepsake as of just last year. Old habits die
hard, I tell ya.
