Toys old and new are beginning to take over my desk at work. Eventually all spaces will be filled with toys, but I do try to keep the population at replacement levels, as opposed to rapid growth.

The exposed 2x4 "shelving" has been barren for ages, but with shipments from home this week, it has sprung to life with an array of vintage 1980s Transformers.

I often think about how each of the three cubs we have had differ in personality and behavior. Lately I have been reminiscing about Xi Lan. He was such a rough and tumble boy and certainly the most adventurous of the three. He enjoyed playing hard and destroying things. Of all the cubs, he has been the fiercest with the enrichment items and often renders them useless after he plays with them. He doesn’t just break toys; he has also taken down two trees from the outdoor habitats, dismantled a drinker in the indoor dens and chewed on one of the cameras we used for monitoring him and Lun Lun when he was an infant (which, of course, we thought was out of reach). Thankfully, Xi Lan has never injured himself in his adventures! As he has matured, eating has become more important than playing, but when he does play, he still plays rough. He still destroys toys (or tries his best!) when he plays with them. In lieu of pulling down trees, he will dig a huge hole in the mulch in the dayrooms. It is nice to know that even though he is growing up, our little troublemaker has not changed.

Malahide - Dublin

Malahide Castle, parts of which date to the 12th century, lies, with over 260 acres (1.1 km2) of remaining estate parkland (the Malahide Demesne Regional Park), close to the village of Malahide, nine miles (14 km) north of Dublin in Ireland.

The Castle is one of the oldest in Ireland. From 1185 until 1975, it was the home of the Talbot family.

In 1169, at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, Malahide was under the control of Hammund Mac Turkill, the last Viking King of Dublin.

The estate began in 1185, when Richard Talbot, a knight who accompanied England’s King, Henry II to Ireland in 1174, was granted the "lands and harbour of Malahide".

The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and it was home to the Talbot family for 791 years, the only exception being the period from 1649-1660, when Oliver Cromwell granted it to Miles Corbet after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland; Corbet was hanged following the demise of Cromwell, and the castle was restored to the Talbots.

The building was notably enlarged in the reign of England’s King, Edward IV, and the towers were added in 1765.

The estate survived such losses as the Battle of the Boyne, when fourteen members of the owner's family sat down to breakfast in the Great Hall, and all were dead by evening, and the Penal Laws, even though the family remained Roman Catholic until 1774.

Malahide Castle and Demesne was eventually inherited by the seventh Baron, Lord Milo Talbot and on his death in 1973, passed to his sister, Rose. In 1975, Rose sold the castle to the Irish State, partly to fund inheritance taxes.

The Castle, along with its subsidiary attractions, is operated as a tourist attraction by Dublin Tourism, working with Fingal County Council, which oversees the Castle Demesne.

The main castle can be visited for a fee, on a guided-tour-only basis. In addition, it is possible to hire the famously gothic Great Hall for private banquets. The castle has an eating facility, and adjacent is a craft shop. The castle's best-known rooms are the Oak Room, and the Great Hall, which displays Talbot family history.

Separately, one can visit:

* Museum of Childhood and Tara's Palace. The centrepiece of the museum is Tara's Palace, built to 1/12 scale, drawing on several of Ireland's "great houses" for architecture and design. The Museum, situated in the castle courtyard, also contains antique dolls, toys and other dolls' houses, including one from 1700 and one from the family of Oscar Wilde's mother.

* The Fry Model Railway, a large (2,500 sq ft.) working miniature rail display, from the 1920s-1930s. The railway includes models of stations and Irish features. This appeared to be closed when I visited the castle. See further information below.

* The Talbot Botanic Gardens, situated behind the castle, comprising several hectares of plants and lawns, a walled garden of 1.6 hectares (2007: public access, Weds. only, groups by appointment) and seven glasshouses, including a Victorian period conservatory. Many plants from the southern hemisphere, notably Chile and Australia, are featured.

The demense is one of few surviving examples of 18th century landscaped parks, and has wide lawns surrounded by a protective belt of trees. It can be visited freely, with a number of entrances and car parking areas. In addition to woodland walks, and a marked "exercise trail", the park features actively used sports grounds, including a cricket pitch and several football pitches, a 9-hole par-3 golf course, an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts and a boules area. There is also a modern children's playground near the castle.

FRY MODEL RAILWAY

Most of you will not be aware that the Fry Model Railway, owned by Dublin Tourism and housed in a purpose built building in Malahide Castle grounds has been given notice by Fingal County Council, the owners of the premises.

The reason for the eviction is not clear.

Again, most of you will have visited the Fry Model Railway at some time, and would be aware of the significance of this working layout, and associated static displays. It is the only working layout on the island to represent the history of our railways over the past 170 years or so, with the main line representing Belfast – Dublin - Cork, and including the narrow gauge and such delights as the mail boat sailing from Dun Laoire, and the Guinness barges on the River Liffey.

The layout, as far as we can ascertain, is to be put into storage, following its dismantling. The deadline for this is the end of February. No further details are available, and the future of both public and enthusiast viewing is uncertain.

An alternative location should be found, if possible, and we are appealing to ALL of you to come up with suggestions, north, south, east or west, in order that this magnificent collection should be kept available for public viewing. One suggestion is that it be re-erected in the grounds of Collins Barracks Mus

My little angel has become 1 year old last sunday. Time is flying!
Her birthday was great. She ate pie, unfolded presents and had a great time with the other kids.
At the end of the day she was exhausted, but very satisfied...

Dial "H" for Hero - Adventure Comics #481

Back around 1980, DC Comics announced that they would be revisiting the Dial “H” for Hero concept. They would debut the new series in Adventure Comics using ideas sent in from readers.

See, the whole Dial “H” thing made the heroes change identities each time they used the dial. So, after a few days of drawing and provide some background ideas on each character, I sent in my entries.

A few months later, the series debuted but with no sight of any of my characters. Fast forward a few issues, we made a trip downtown to pick up some comics as we were gearing up to drive down to San Diego/Tijuana to visit family. I need something to read, so the comic shop was a must stop. I got my usual assortment of books and we went home to pack.

By the time we got home, I had glanced at some of the books and made my way to Adventure Comics #481. After getting near the end, I saw my name attached to the Stellar character. Looking back at the cover, my design was also used for the cover. Cool!

We realized we needed more copies. A quick run back to the comic shop and we loaded up with probably twenty copies of that issue which were mostly distributed to family.

Every so often, I buy a copy of that issue. Eventually, Gabriel will see my brief entry into the comic world, too.

Comic and Lego haul

As many of you probably know may 2nd is national free comic book day. So I hit up a couple of my local comic book stores and I was able to get 56 free comics!
Also every few months (usually each season) my local Walmart has a lego sponsored free building event, where anybody can come in and build a model out of a certain amount of pieces. This time around it was a flower (spring/mothers day).

my new, but old toy :)

I'm a child of the digital age and have never learnt real photography so I did some research to find out a good SLR learning camera - a film one. Old school! I'm really excited to learn how to do everything manually. I don't have a DSLR - that is way out of my price range! But good ole trademe supplied me with this old beauty, circa 1974 in mint condition, including 2 lenses: a 55mm f/2, and 28mm f/3.5 wide lenses for only $90. From researching like crazy (which is what I do with all potential toy purchases), I found out that Pentax Asahis, Leicaflexes, and old Nikon SLR's are great film SLR's, and fantastic to learn on.

Leicaflexes still go for $500+ USD on ebay, and the Pentax has a wee bit of sentimental value, as my Dad has had one since I was small poking it in my face at birthdays and bike races or other occasions.

So I was stoked to find this old Pentax Asahi Pentax Spotmatic 1000. Just like Dad's! He doesn't use it much anymore so he gave me his 135mm f/3.6 lenses to add to my collection.

Aside from all that I love the look of old cameras. They massage my wanky aesthetic side, lol.

Now I just have to learn how to put a film in...

Porter puppy

This is Porter, he's a beagle coonhound mutt who was adopted by my friend here in town. He's 1 year and about 6 months of age.

Due to his severe separation anxiety I have become his baby sitter and trainer. He's dropped off in the morning and stays here till 5:30 pm. Thankfully he's just like my dog, Casie, except he has bouts of puppyness, loving to romp around.

So far we've been good about staying out of the kitchen, no jump, sit, down, and working on stay. He's learning other rules involving food (like no begging) and playing nice, no nips (but kisses are ok!). In time he'll turn into another potato just like our Casie, he's already on the way there!

Where the Wil Things Are

When I saw Wil's blog entry about the Wil in the Wild flickr pool, I thought "Great! I loved THDOOL, this is my chance to show it". I had dreams of taking a clever, dramatic picture that demonstrated how much this book means to me.

Of course, having an infant in the house changes things, so I downshifted from creative to "just shoot it already", but that introduced anxiety. My books are either on shelves alphabetically, or they're stacked in piles all over the house. "What if THDOOL was just thrown in some dusty corner?" I thought. "Worse yet, what if it is shelved next to something inappropriate or crappy? What if it's next to Michael Crichton???"

I grabbed my camera and rushed around the house trying to find this precious gem. Imagine my relief when I found it, alphabetically between Vonnegut and Wiesel (ignore for now The Color Purple, that's not my fault). Appropriately enough, there's also Sci-Fi (The War of the Worlds), biography (The Right Stuff), and geekdom (Mastering Algorithms with Perl). Satisfied with the resting place of My Little Chunk of Wil, I clicked the shutter.

Why such concern over such a small book? I got THDOOL to write a review of it, having enjoyed Wil's blog. What I got, while not my favorite book, was nonetheless the only book I've ever read that has ever touched me so personally.

Wil and I are roughly the same age. We grew up (for a while at least), in strikingly similar circumstances. Here in my hands was a book, written by someone famous, yet he could very easily have been my next door neighbor and, I suspect, my best friend.

I feel like such a fanboy for writing this. After all, Wil's, well... Wil. He's Wil Effing Wheaton, for Crusher's sake! And me? Despite similarities in tastes, early childhood lifestyles, and disappointment in Star Wars toys, I grew up to be... just me.

Thank you, Wil, for the memories and for the stories. Keep writing, there are many days where WWdN is the one happy moment in an RSS reader full of crap sandwiches.

Olivia has this toy that she plays with in the pool that you squeeze and it shoots water. Well she was enjoying watching the water and I decided I wanted a picture, however, when I snapped the picture my hand slipped and shot her in the face. I am a horrible mother! But it made for a good picture!

Star Wars Focus Stack

I know this isn't what I usually post, but I thought it was an interseting result from my experiment. I recently downloaded the trial version of Zerene Stacker and have been playing around with it for the last few weeks. I've mostly used it for macro stuff, but yesterday I had an idea. Could I use it to creat one of those photos where an object is seemingly floating in mid air? I know these are normally made using photoshop, but I figured I'd give it a try with Zerene.

So, for my experiment I brought out some of my old Star Wars MicroMachines and some toothpicks and set up this scene. I first took a photo of the empty background, then placed the Star Wars figures on the end of a toothpick and photographed them. After I uploaded the photos to my computer I stacked them with Zerene. It worked pretty well and all I had to do was use the retouching tool to replace the toothpicks with the background.

After concluding my experiment, I would say that yes, you can use Zerene Stacker to make things float.

Hijdas and Toy Boys and Blogs

Dont be alarmed or get hysterical with what I have to say, its my personal opinion, but it is the reality of my Blog Stats both at Word Press and at Flickr.
There is an uncanny curiosity about Hijdas on the cybernet and in real virtual world I saw it at Haji Malang.
Hordes of youngsters enamoured by this rare breed that is Indian transgenders called Hijdas.
They pretend that they stalk Hijdas for fun or to tease them , but the truth is they just want to fuck them period.
I have seen married men head over heels in the company of Hijdas.

The troubled , unemployed lazy , youth likes Hijdas , because Hijdas are spenders and dole out money unlike women, who mostly crave for rich men and social trappings and marriage ultimately.There are exceptions to rules keeping this as a disclamer in mind..
This post is not a comparitive study between hijdas and women.
The Hijda wants a man, her exclusive man, to show off to the other Hijdas , this is a human Hijda weakness.
The Hijda relationship has its flip side too..
I wont scare the Hijda paramour with bobitting and castration when the Hijda is spurned for a woman by her toy boy.
There are many unsolved stories and theatrics is not part of my brief..
Hijdas are human but deadly in their intentions when fouled or when they are back stabbed.
I have many Hijda love stories locked up in the pigeon hole of my head.
I respect Hijdas , at the Ganesh Visarjan when the Hijdas are drunk , their feelings for their lover boys is at public display.Kissing mooching and the cops and society look the other way

At Haji Malang I did not deliberately shoot guys prowling wildly on the Hijdas, its puppy love at a Holy place , but a lot of guys are here are here for fun and games.
And one of them becomes the chosen iconic toy boy of the Hijda.

I had Hijdas horny as hell showing me their genitalia to shoot , but I avoided them , my pictures even those that are not of naked Naga Sadhus are flagged here at Flickr where all my posts originate., as though I am a leper , nothing can change that , though you can see male female body parts because Flickr is a human butchers shop..only the Flickr techno dudes pretend they dont know it..

Flickr knows it and I know it too..
And those that flock to Flickr to masturbate their thoughts on such pictures.
And I have to tow Flickr guideline - that I do..individually without the help of motley groups..

I am not into child or adult porn, maybe a bit of mammary glands not my own pictures .
But the Naga Sadhus at Flickr did me in..
I am a leper unless I delete all the naked Naga Sadhu pictures - so they are kept in quarantine as restricted specie.
My Moharam pictures are messy but such are religious traditions and ritualism,, but here I am lucky like the Ipernity moderator they do not say that Moharam pictures corrupt minors.

For the record and as a protest I do not post at Ipernity at all.
And at Blogspot because of Word Verification that the Bloggerspot Techno dudes should term Word Villification.

Anyway being a hurt blogger , I digress I like to share my pain and open bleeding wounds with the rest of the world ..

A flickr friend was quite sure it had been Big Boy, and I can't disagree, as the building looks nothing like the typical gabled Shoney's, with a new front added, as some do.

I recall very well dining here, in the 90's, when it was still quite new.

These pics are to demostrate the 1994 date on the building, and the former location of the main doors.
