Bellows with Focusing Rail Minolta camera with circa 1970 automatic bellows and focusing rail. In 1970 Minolta was the first company to offer automatic bellows. This allowed the lens to be at maximum aperture for viewing and focusing and then automatically close down to the set aperture when the shutter button is pressed. This is extremely beneficial for dealing with the light loss caused by bellows while composing and focusing. In this photo the 58mm lens has been attached with a reversing ring which disables the automatic feature. The advantage to the reversing ring is to optimize the optical properties of a standard lens for macro shots. The bellows allows the lens to focus on objects very close to the lens for high magnification. + The bellows does not cause such a radical reduction in the Depth Of Field as close-up attachments do. - The down side to bellows is the high cost and the loss of light. Whenever the lens gets closer to the subject than it is to the focal plane of the camera, focusing and magnification behave in abnormal ways. Focusing is best performed by physically moving the camera. The lower set of rails shown in this photo between the tripod and the rails for the bellows are focusing rails. Simply turning a knob on the far side of the assembly moves everything on top of the tripod for precise focus. I am making an adapter to mate the Minolta bellows to my Nikon cameras. After bouncing around in my pockets every single day for 2 years, my trusty old Lomo LC-A has finally given up the ghost with the shutter stuck open, like a sightless, dead eye. I suppose I could try to have it repaired again (and I probably will, but where's the drama in that?) but, to be totally honest, I've been kind of wanting something about the same size with a little more control over focus and depth of field. Hence the Olympus XA. An aperture priority rangefinder about the same size as an LC-A. Lovely! The same? No, of course not. But way shiny! 732 My First Professional Camera My first professional camera was a 4x5 Speed Graphic. My first duty station after finishing Basic Photography School in Pensacola, Florida, was to the Light Photographic Squadron Sixty-Two. (VFP-62) It would have been in January, 1959, but I have no remembrance of who took this picture. It was probably my dad. After I taught him photography (he was 50 years old at the time), he loved it. He was to shoot about a million slides before he slacked off. I built my Speed Graphic from the ground up, by getting parts from the Camera Repair Shop, at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, FL. The repairmen started bringing me a part here, and a part there from their workshops at home. When it got down to the shutter I bought that at a camera shop downtown Jacksonville. Bought it new. When I went in to work the next day, the guys in Camera Repair, worked me into their schedule and installed my new shutter. It took me a while, but finally it was refurbished, and looked and performed like a new one. Every news photographer carried the Speed Graphic, and it was only a little while later that I discovered I could get into all sorts of places and happenings. All I had to do was put my camera in my hands, and a bag for all the film holders, and flashbulbs over my shoulder, and most of the time I was just waved on through. I didn’t miss-represent myself. But I was “Joe Cool” as I approached the gates with my “Press” look. Still later, I did misrepresent myself by having our drafter make me a “Press” sign for my car. Then I was motioned on through ’cause I was a News Man. Those were real fun days. -end- Jax St. Johns Town Center Sunset I'm a bit frusrated, one day I forget to see the sky and that day is when that great colorful sunset I have been waiting for is there. Suddenly I look in sky and it was incredible and I'm like noooo.........I was hanging out in the mall but It was too good to be missed so quickly ran to my car to grab my tripod and camera, however by the time I reached my car and setup everything, the best part was gone :( :( :(. This guy says he actually drives this machine on Interstate 10 and Highway 60 even during rush hour! I'm sure the MG42 machine gun is a real conversation piece for any drivers that might want to cut him off on the freeway. Anyway it's amazing to look at and I'm sure it must draw a lot of attention anywhere it goes. The MG 42 is a 7.92mm high rate of fire machine gun which entered service with the Wehrmacht in 1942. The MG 42 has one of the highest average rates of fire of any single-barreled man-portable machine gun, between 1,200 and 1,500 rpm, resulting in a distinctive muzzle report. Leica M6 TTL x.58 Special Edition Black Paint Camera and Lenses This Tasty little set up is my Leica M6 TTL x.58 Special Edition Black Paint with a 28mm Summicron ASPH f2 and 35mm Summilux ASPH f1.4 lenses. Most if not all of the photographs in my Portfolio sets were taken with this camera. I had another one for a while but I sold it recently to help pay for my 5D. Anyways, this set up is KILLER. Slap the lens and carrier on the bottom as seen in the next picture, toss a few rolls in your pocket and off you go. Before buying this one I had the classic black chrome M6. When I saw this Special Edition come out I HAD to have it. I'd always loved the look of the original black paint M4's but knew I could never have one. They were and still are WAY too expensive and have no meter built in. Old school Leica users swear by the previous non metered cameras. I however, do not. The thing that had me dorking out was the fact that of the 2000 Black Paints made, only 70 had the wider x.58 finder. being a sucker for rare/custom/sexy things I was suckered into buying not one, but two. I'm telling you though, there's nothing better than a shiny new Leica sitting in it's little bed it comes in. Okay, I'll stop now... Lots of weapons and different types of missions. I also enjoyed the fact that there are so many different things to change the game, stealth, shooter, and puzzle/objectives. I rented the game first and then actually bought a copy that I have played more than once. There's the going under cover and puzzles of M:I-1 and the action and stealth of M:I-2. It also has the spirit and atmosphere of the ever-popular stealth game Splinter Cell. However, even though a lot of people it said Operation Surma was too much like Splinter Cell, I say it has just as much stuff not in Splinter Cell that is in Splinter Cell. For example, in Splinter Cell, the game revolves around stealth. Stealth, stealth, stealth. Action is kept to a minimum with you sneaking up on guards and bopping them in the head. In Operation Surma, there's a lot more of shooting stuff, although it's kept to a level where the game is still very stealthy. But it's a lot more fun doing this sometimes than just hiding in the shadows. When it comes to stealth, this game does very well. Operation Surma has a stealth meter just like Splinter Cell, although it's a lot simpler. And there's another improvement over Splinter Cell: If you're discovered, and there's no time for your pistol, then you can use hand-to-hand combat, which much more well done that in Splinter Cell. This video also included brief clips from several of the the bands other videos in this collection. It is also longer than the studio track. Duran Duran Videos "Rio" (Russell Mulcahy) Duran Duran travelled to the island of Antigua in May 1982 to film the vivid music video for "Rio", which featured iconic images of the band in colourful Antony Price silk suits, singing and playing around on a yacht speeding over the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. Short segments show band members trying to live out their assorted daydreams, only to be teased, tormented, and made fools of by a body-painted vixen. Planet Earth (Russell Mulcahy) Fairly primitive by the band's later standards, the video was shot on a sound stage at St John's Wood. It features the band (dressed in frilly, floppy New Romantic fashions) playing the song on a white stage tricked out with special effects to look like a platform made of ice or crystal. Interspersed with the performance are shots of the band members alongside the four elements. The video focused closely on the band's faces, highlighting their varied good looks. The instrumental middle section features friends of the band from the Rum Runner nightclub dancing in their outlandish outfits. At the end of the video, singer Simon Le Bon leaps from the stage, caught in a freeze frame shot above an apparently bottomless abyss. Lonely in your Nightmare (Russell Mulcahy) The video for this melancholy album track contains a series of colour images, in which a beautiful woman in a flowing dress wanders about the tropical settings of Sri Lanka, drawing the attention of various band members. The elusive woman appears again in black and white scenes filmed in London, disappearing whenever the band members turn to look for her. "Careless Memories" (Perry Haines) This video was filmed in a decorated flat and on the streets around Soho in London when it was a hell of a lot cooler, back in the eighties Soho and Noho were raven with sex shops and wine bars these days it's just continental breakfasts and cafe' culture. Anyway the band members talk and laugh while Simon Le Bon sings savagely to the camera. "My Own Way" (Russell Mulcahy) The video for "My Own Way" was filmed in a St. Johns Wood studio that was decorated entirely in red, black and white. The band performs the fast-paced song in close-up, while flamenco dancers twirl in the background, and a colourful parrot sits on the synthesisers, pecking at the keyboardist's fingers. "Hungry Like the Wolf" (Russell Mulcahy) This lush and cinematic video filmed in Sri Lanka was filled with shots of jungles, rivers, elephants, cafes and marketplaces evoking the exotic atmosphere of swashbuckler adventure films like Gunga Din and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The storyline reflected the lyrics "I'm on the hunt, I'm after you," with Le Bon pursuing a tiger-like woman from parties in the city through obstacles in the jungle, culminating in a final chase and struggle in a jungle clearing. In the meantime, other band members hunted for Le Bon. One shot of Le Bon's head rising out of the water in portentous slow motion (it was actually filmed backwards) is an homage to an identical shot in Apocalypse Now. "(Waiting for the) Night Boat" (Russell Mulcahy) The album track "Night Boat" was a spooky, atmospheric piece to begin with, and the video became a mini-horror film shot on the Caribbean island of Antigua. A brief bit of dialogue before the music starts includes Le Bon's recitation of one of Mercutio's speeches from Romeo and Juliet. Band members gather in a small beach village as the sun is setting, only to be separated and set upon by zombies one by one, until the ragged Nightboat arrives to carry Le Bon away. It is possible that this video is a homage to the Italian horror film Zombi 2, with settings and zombies which look very much like those in the film. This video was filmed in May of 1982, several months before Michael Jackson began working on the video "Thriller", which also featured zombies. "Girls on Film" (Godley & Creme) This hit single was accompanied by an audacious video filmed at Shepperton Studios in July 1981. Simon and his fellow band members perform on a stage behind a model's catwalk, as various scantily clad women act out sexy vignettes including a lesbian pillow-fight, a rescued swimmer seducing her lifeguard, a massage therapist attending her client in garter belt and stockings, and a topless women mud wrestling another in a 1-piece swimsuit. Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) The Vehicle (originally Vertical) Assembly Building, or VAB, is a very large building located at 28.586° N 80.651° W in NASA's Kennedy Space Center, halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, and due east of Orlando on Merritt Island, on the Atlantic coast of Florida. It is one of the world's largest buildings (by volume) at third place, the largest one-story building in the world[citation needed], and was the tallest building in Florida until 1974. It was originally built to vertically assemble the stages of the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo program, where despite the building's huge height, the conducting rod at the tip of the Saturn V had to be removed to fit inside the building. It is now used for housing external fuel tanks and flight hardware, and the location of Orbiter mating (stacking) with the solid rocket boosters and external fuel tank to make up a complete Space Transportation System, called the Space Shuttle for short. Once assembled, the Space Transportation System is moved on the Mobile Launcher Platform and Crawler-Transporter to Launch complex 39. The VAB is 525 ft (160 meters) tall, 716 ft (218 meters) long and 518 ft (158 meters) wide. It covers 8 acres (32,500 square meters) and encloses 129,428,000 ft? (3,664,883 m?) of space. One indicator of the building's scale is that each of the stars on the American flag painted on the building is 6 feet (1.8 m) across and the stripes are large enough to drive a tour bus on. The flag was added in 1976 as part of United States Bicentennial celebrations along with the star logo of the anniversary, which was later replaced by the NASA logo. The VAB's interior volume is so vast that it has its own weather system—"NASA employees report that rain clouds form below the ceiling on very humid days"[1]. The building implements four large air machines (four cylindrical structures west of the building) to keep moisture under control. To get around, employees occasionally travel within the building via bicycle. Being in Florida, the building has been constructed to withstand many hurricanes and tropical storms. The most extensive damage ever recorded occurred during Hurricane Frances in September 2004, when about 1,000 10 ? 40 foot (3 ? 12 m) aluminum panels were blown off the building, resulting in about 40,000 ft? (3,700 m?) of new openings in the sides. This came only three weeks after Hurricane Charley caused significant but less serious damage, estimated to cost about $700,000. Damage caused by these hurricanes is still apparent going into 2006. It should be noted that some of these panels are punch-outs designed to detach from the VAB when a large pressure differential is created on the outside vs. the inside. This allows for equalization and helps protect the structural integrity of the building during rapid changes in pressure such as in tropical cyclones. It is expected that, starting in 2010, after the retirement of the Space Shuttle, the VAB will transition back to processing of the heavy lift launcher derived from the Space Shuttle and used for the return to the Moon in 2018. Vehicle Maintenance section performs inspections Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, 06 June 2007 Vehicle Maintenance section performs inspections Canadian Forces technicians verify the function of a Remote Weapons System atop an RG 31 Armoured Personnel Vehicle at the Vehicle Maintenance section, Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Weapons Technician Corporal Naomi Okimawininew (left) and Electronics/Optronics Technician Corporal Warren Westall, both from Deep River, Ontario, are currently serving with the Canadian Forces' Joint Task Force Afghanistan. The Vehicle Maintenance section performs inspections, maintenance and repairs on trucks and armoured vehicles of all types used by the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. About 2500 members of the Canadian Forces (CF) are currently serving as part of Joint Task Force Afghanistan. Most of the soldiers are stationed at Kandahar Airfield and at Camp Nathan Smith, Canada’s Provincial reconstruction Team (PRT) in Kandahar City. Other personnel are assigned to various military headquarters, a support base, and civilian organizations. They play a key role in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force mission whose goal is to improve the security situation in Afghanistan and assist in rebuilding the country. Le Caporal Naomi Okimawininew (a gauche), technicienne d’armement, et le Caporal Warren Westall, technicien en electronique/optoelectronique, les deux originaires de Deep River (Ontario), font actuellement partie de la Force operationnelle interarmees (FOI) des Forces canadiennes en Afghanistan. Cette section inspecte, entretient et repare les camions et vehicules blindes en tout genre dont se servent les FC dans ce pays. Environ 2 500 membres des FC servent actuellement au sein de la FOI-Afg. La plupart sont affectes a l’aerodrome de Kandahar et au Camp Nathan Smith, qui abrite l’Equipe de reconstruction provinciale (ERP) du Canada a Kandahar meme. Le reste des effectifs est affecte a divers quartiers generaux, a une base de soutien et a des organismes civils. Les soldats canadiens jouent un role cle dans la FIAS (Force internationale d’assistance a la securite) que dirige l’OTAN et dont la mission est d’ameliorer la securite en Afghanistan et d’aider a la reconstruction du pays.
