In the Beginning...
...there was this carpet on the first floor and stairs of our house. Shortly after we moved in, we removed the carpet from the three rooms it covered, but left the stairs alone for some reason (laziness and not wanting to deal with carpet staples for a long time).
Now that our cat likes to puke a lot, the carpet was getting stained and reeked despite our best efforts to keep it clean and heave-free. This morning, on a whim, I ripped up a corner on the bottom stair and before we had a chance to talk ourselves out of it, Brian and I went to town on this filthy wrecked carpet.

White stuff on the floor seems to be some sort of filler. My guess is the floor warped and bowed so they took out a board and filled in. We hired someone to do the floor here and refinish the stairs while we were on vacation this summer. We came home and the board was replaced, the bad removed and floor is now v. nice.
