Market Cross, Alnwick

Market Cross, Alnwick

Went to Alnwick when the music festival was on and we didn't plan to share the Market Place with so many people. Got this when everyone had gone home, but would have liked the market stall to have gone home too.

The cross is probably medieval, but the carved head is thought to have come from an earlier cross on the site. (SINE)

Heavenly Treasure

Heavenly Treasure

Week Two; Theme: "Treasure"

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:20-21 (NIV)

Money can buy you a dog, but it could never buy you a relationship with him. That can only come from a personal investment of time and love. I treasure my relationship with my three "boys" more than anything else, and I know that they all feel the same way about me.

This shoot was significantly more challenging than last week! And, like last week, I'm not even close to satisfied with my end result. I wanted to do color since I did mono last week, so I was needed to do it in the small window of time when everyone was at home and there was still sunlight. Not to mention that trying to coordinate three subjects and getting them all to do what I wanted at the same time was harder than I bargained for. But they all know me well and did their best to endure my obscure and unhelpful instructions, and everyone still had all their appendages at the end, so hooray!

Cheers to you from Panera, with one of my long-time mentors - Lunch out 2008, #1

I get to have lunch meetings with people every week, and this one was special. This is my friend, John, who has been making a personal investment in my life since 1989, almost 20 years.

We were in the Panera on York Rd in Baltimore, and the place was packed with the lunch-time crowd. (If you're checking, I had an Asiago Roast Beef sandwich with the chips swapped out for a large fruit cup and a diet Pepsi with fresh lemons.)

This was the best of two shots I took, putting my camera on my Gorillapod on my side of the round table, setting it to two-person portrait mode with the 10 second timer on and then running around the table to get into the shot.

Some people were amused, some people thought we were crazy - just like life!

First in a series.

Jacob Reed Building

Jacob Reed Building

Now a CVS on the bottom. This article below is from 2003:

The famed Jacob Reed building, an architectural treasure and one of Center City's most notable buildings, has been sold for $5.8 million to a local partnership.

Sunny Spring LLC, the name that the buying partnership goes under, acquired the five-story, 50,000-square-foot property at 1424 Chestnut St. from Chicago-based Transwestern Investment Co.

The building has had a storied history.

It was designed by William Price, a Philadelphia architect, and constructed in 1903 for Jacob Reed's Sons, a well-known men's clothing store.

The facade of the structure has a loggia on the top floor, a high arched entranceway and it is constructed with a red tile roof, according to a description in Philadelphia Architecture, which was published by the Foundation for Architecture. The building was made with dark brown brick set in thick mortar and Mercer tiles under the eaves and soffit, according to the book's description.

Mercer tiles were created by Henry Mercer, who ran the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown. His handcrafted decorative tiles were laid in different interlocking designs to complement individual buildings. In the Jacob Reed building, the tiles depicted crafts associated with the garment industry.

Aside from that detail, the building was one of the first in the city to use reinforced concrete. In addition, clerestory windows, which are placed in an upper outside wall and set in from a main wall, were used. These windows were illuminated from behind to make the building look like a freestanding structure.

In 1983, Jacob Reed's closed its doors after nearly 160 years in business and the building stood vacant. A controversy erupted over the property late that same year when Rite-Aid Corp. arranged a nine-year lease on the property. Philadelphia's architectural community as well as other civic groups were upset that a chain store was moving into the historical building. Rite-Aid ended up selling its interest in that lease.

In October of that year, Willard Rouse III, in a civic gesture to save an architecturally significant property, bought the building for $2.3 million with plans to put Boyd's Mens Store in the street level retail space. Rouse's plans also included renovating the upper floors for office space. As then-chairman of the Foundation for Architecture, Rouse also intended to donate the building to the organization.

Under Rouse's ownership, a Barnes & Noble bookstore moved in and office tenants began to occupy the upper floors. Rouse sold the property in 1986 to Pima Savings & Loan Association of Arizona for $7.85 million.

This was a commissioned build of the old Heller kit and unfortunately I don't have any bigger images of it. I rescribed it and made new decals to replace the yellowed kit sheet. I couldn't find any reference of the stencil text, so I used random words from an IKEA catalogue, at least they're in the right language...

Dynabook. And how to use less papers (even at your home office).

Dynabook. And how to use less papers (even at your home office).

I can't remember, recall, when Dynabook was envisioned. (Well, but probably many more other Dynabooks have been envisioned - came into the minds of many human beings, many more times, even before Alan Kay came to think about it. Many humans (must) have felt for potentials among kids (human beings) - and dreamed of, thought of, 'something different'.)

It was - when? 70s or 80s? Douglas Engelbart came up with whole his ideas (and basic tenets or 'policies' - set of ideas) exactly when? 1968 was merely a 'demo'. When his ideas about group-ware, group workstations - and some other important, key ideas came up? (and why and how?)

And when Alan Kay part his way from Engelbart - (or ? while he was still at Palo Alto, before MIT?) that's the point Dynabook came?

All this was before - what's really important here is - before America went through all these 'changes' - now it really has to face and match up - and find probably better solutions.

When I bought this paper - I just thought both of Engelbart's system or Alan Kay's ideas - (or probably even Papert's idea about how to use screen and keyboard based comptuers - for kids or potentials of human beings...) - came before 'Mom is working' or mom has work - kind of situation.

Probably both parents weren't working. Probably both parents didn't have credit cards. Probably both parents didn't have to have Excel files to handle their financials.

Maybe no one had 'office' - in their apartments and homes.

Since then, things have moved on. More tools, more papers, more printed stuff, more 'measurements' -

Unfortunately talks about dreams and ideas for computers have no social context. But I am replaying 1996 conference - Brown and MIT one. Engelbart surely said adults are the problems - and we need to work on adults. Kay didn't answer. Tim Berners Lee only said it's doom and gloom.

Recently two NYT column pieces said America failed on making use of past 30 years. That gives an anchor point around 1977. Engelbart sustained his alarmist(?) tendency since probably 60s - sometime.

What started to go wrong since late 70s? -

Then I think of what Suzy Orman says. America is not happy with credit card. She hopes for America, where people can really live without credit cards. She thinks it's not American and she judges that it's not good for anyone. She says it's ridiculous to think that people should be able to invest in stocks. No. She says. We all should be able to live without having portfolios. That's kind of day dreaming, but we can't firmly say 'no everyone should have stocks and investments.' She recommends treasury bonds - something more stable and probably least volatile. (* I should check out what she has been saying about this housing downturn and subprime mess.)

We will have this society - both parents keep working, keep having credit cards, keep billed for fine prints. No time for just plain and calm things, but stressed out for partial, limited, not so reliable and stable over-extended bandage type of solutions.

And gasp for some real moments.

Wall Street - April 1999

Wall Street - April 1999

September 22, 2008
(from today's Guardian, in the UK)

The concept of a Wall Street investment bank was in its death throes today as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs succumbed to a collapse in confidence in their financial stability by converting themselves into lower risk, tightly regulated commercial banks.

Beset by plunging share prices and alarmed by the demise of competitors, the two remaining standalone Wall Street banks accepted licences from the Federal Reserve which allow them to take deposits from the public backed by federal government guarantees.

While safeguarding customers' money, the change will radically restrict the firms' activities by imposing strict regulatory limits on the risks their traders can take on the markets and on the amount of money they can borrow.

Google Glasses

Google Glasses

I used to work at myCFO (another hot startup funded by Kleiner Perkins and Jim Clark). We were across the street from Google. The guys from Google used to play street hockey in the parking lot. We'd always find these broken glasses left over from their games. Folks started collecting them and throwing them in a big jar on my desk -- my "art" collection. Now it's time to return these glasses to their original owners.

_LOST & FOUND_

Found: Eyeglasses between the years 2000-2002 in the parking lot of 1501 Salada Drive (where Google building e and pi are today). Were you one of those Googlers who played street hockey in the empty parking lot? Did you leave behind your smashed glasses after a ruff game? If so, we found them, saved them and want to give them back. Do any of these belong to you?
