Best Of Jazz Saxophone
Chris Potter and the UT Jazz Orchestra
In concert at UT's Bates Recital Hall, March 6, 2010. Chris Potter (born January 1, 1971) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Potter spent most of his childhood in Columbia, South Carolina where his mother taught psychology at the University of South Carolina. He exhibited an early interest in all kinds of music and quickly became a prodigy, mastering several instruments including guitar and piano, and finally gravitating toward the alto and tenor saxophone.
My son and I agreed that on an 'awesomeness' scale of 1-10, Potter comes in a 11. He's one of the very best sax musicians in the world today.
The person to his right is Gabriel Santiago, a Brazilian post-doc at UT Austin. He's not only a gifted composer and arranger - he's a jazz guitarist who is at least at the level of a Lee Ritenour. Look for good things from this artist in the future.
Taken at the Jazz Festival, King Street, Bristol on 25th August 2007.
Watched by both me and my friend Bob Snell, this is Jeremy Kwee and his band Kumquat.
Described as the best of young British Jazz upstarts, Jeremy is playing his version of the haunting Buddy Freak melody "Desolate Shore" in an inventive new arrangement.
Where although he follows the original 32 bar A,A,B,A structure instead of providing a harmonic departure from the A section the bridge resolves the rising chromatic pattern.
