Future of television

Vanessa and I took a look at what we watch on TV regularly, and it seems that most of our shows are on network TV. So, we are seriously close to dropping cable and going with over the air. I bought this amplified antenna to bring in non-compressed over the air HD signals straight to our TV. Most of the channels have seemed to work well, except for 12 and it's weaker VHF signal. It will probably be one more month of cable, then we will roll with over the air and streaming (mostly Netflix).

"Anxiety Madness"

It is March Madness here in the good 'ol USA. A time when everyone has a rooting interest in mens (and womens to a lesser extent) college basketball. We pull hard for our team, teams playing other teams we loath and the underdog. As I type this I am watching my Syracuse Orangemen pull out a miraculous comeback and tie it with 4.6 seconds left. OT here we come.

I had the idea for this image while watching the first half of the ball game and knew exactly where I wanted my lights and what the post processing would look like. Not entirely happy with my expression, but runnig back and forth to the camera between each shot is a pain and in the end, I called it good enough. As usual, this is the last shot I took and it is the frame I like the best. It is processed in LR and I applied a tonal contrast to the midtones and shadows in color efex pro. Enjoy.

Davis Gulch big pour over

What I wouldn't give to stand right here during a flash flood and watch the current rip down the canyon floor and for the waterfall that would form at this Davis Gulch major pourover.

I left my Ecalante, Utah motel room (The circle D) at 5 am (Washington time) and made it the 52 miles of bone jarring miles on the Hole In The Rock road by around 7:45 am.

At 8 am, parked below fiftymile point, I shouldered my day pack and headed N.E. cross country well back from the side canyons of Davis Gulch (to avoid contant detours).

I followed rock outcroppings to the cairn marking the way down into Davis Gulch. There is brush and beaver dams along the floor of Davis Gulch and I decided it would take me too long to hike down into the canyon; up to Bements arch; then retrace my route.

So, I decide to take a leisurely hike along the west rim of Davis Gulch and view and photograph it from the canyon rim. The slickrock hiking was a pure pleasure compared to the soft sand hiking I had done on the way in.

My motivation for this hike was historic as much as a desire for scenic desert beauty in a remote location.

The stories of Buzz Holmstrom; the disappearance in the Grand Canyon of Bessie and Glenn Hyde on a sweep boat trip down the Colorado River in 1928; and the disappearance of a young romantic and artist named Everett Ruess in November of 1934 in Davis Gulch - - have always fascinated me. I wanted to see where their stories took place.

UPDATE: It now appears that Everett Ruess's body and artifacts have been found on the Comb Ridge over on the Navajo Indian Reservation west of Bluff, Utah. Read David Roberts story in the April issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine. If the story holds, then Davis Gulch was not the last "campsite" of Everett and his two burros. OMT

The hike along the rim was wonderful and when I got back to my pickup truck below fiftymile point it was actually a warm day for November. I had an ice chest full of cold IBC root beer waiting for me at the truck.

I didn't look forward to the 52 mile rough washboard road route back out, but I took it slow.

Then over halfway back I ran into a young couple from Holland who had buried their rental vehicle in the soft sand of the Spooky canyon road.

Working hard together we were able to free their rental pickup truck in about an hour of hard work. They were a really nice young couple and it felt good to be able to help them out.

I made it back to my motel room a little after dark, quite tired and content. The next day I left before sunrise and made it back to my wife and home in Eastern Washington by 9:30 Sunday night. OMT

English Arm Sofa

We ordered this sofa tonight in the fabric shown. It is Restoration Hardware's English Arm Sofa. The color is Natural and the fabric is heathered velvet. (The top image is the actual color and the bottom swatch is it.) We had been looking at three different sofas, one from Williams Sonoma Home, and one at Calico Corners, and decided to go with this one due to the price. It was a good sale and I was satisfied that it met our needs quality wise. The main criteria however, is this one was the best fit for my bad back, and the rake wasn't as severe as the other two. It was "the decider" for me. The regular velvet is pretty, but it crushes more than this heathered velvet. We custom ordered it and get it by Halloween.

Nice, productive night. More recording, got some work done, watched DVD's I had made of my old camcorder tapes. I also learned of a place that says it might be able to salvage some old reel-to-reel tapes I made as a kid (late 1960's), converting them to wav/mp3. Wow, how wild that would be, hearing my childhood voice again. But we're talking nearly 40 years of deterioration. Fingers firmly crossed.
Took Tuesday off to do that and a few other errands. I'll likely need to work some that night, as well as on the 4th in order to make a deadline on the 10th. Bills continue to need to be paid, dammit.

Every since I coped the iPhone my iPod useage has gone way down. I have lost all desire to get new music, it's a pain in the ass. When I go the touch I had barely been listening to any music or watching any video on mobile devices at all. I think my iPod obssesion is done.

Product Placement enters new era with innovative film trailer

Sex and the City II was teaming with it, Twilight wouldn't stop going on about it and I, Robot still faces embarrasment from it. Exhibit A: the outdated product placement that Hollywood can't leave alone.

Tenuous and distracting, it feels as dated as a black and white television and treats its viewers in a way that was only exciting in the 1950s. It seems that the belief that an audience will be subconciously influenced to purchase an iPhone, a Starbucks coffee or a Volvo is the source of the discontent. The truth of the matter is we're far more sophisticated consumers now.

Which is where Exhibit B comes into play. Instead of tricking a viewer into making a purchase, this method of product placement is contempory and relevent. First seen on networks such as CW, after watching an episode of Gossip Girl or Smallville, the consumer is encouraged to engage further in the series, by visiting the CW website and exploring its style section, where links to similar clothing and products are provided. Rather than interrupting the feel of a programme, it embraces product placement in a way far more in line with a consumer's expectations. Instead of following Carrie's every branded move around Manhattan, they can engage in the aspirational lifestyle in a form that understands the level of sophistication relevant to a twenty first century consumer.

Momentum Pictures latest production, Chalet Girl, takes this one step further. As the first film to feature a fully integrated 'Like' button within its trailer, it marks a new era of product placement for the film and television industries. The viewer is engaged by the cultural choices they make when watching the trailer. By using this type of feedback so intrinsically, the products featured will garner a much higher respect from savvy consumers. Clicking on the "Like" buttons gives viewers access through Facebook to cast information, snowboarding locations where the film was shot, as well as highlighting brands featured in the film, which include Roxy and Roxy Riders, Thomas Cook, Intersport, Red Bull, and Nintendo.

As Martin Talks, chief executive of Blue Barracuda, states: "When people watch a film, they are often inspired by the lifestyle it portrays and want to buy into it. Desperate Democrats Launch Campaign to Blame GOP for S&P Downgrade

President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are escalating their efforts to pin the responsibility for the dismal economy on Republicans.

Thursday's 512-point slide in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, exacerbated by Standard & Poor’s downgrading the U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA+ Friday night, increased the likelihood that voters will express their wrath over the bad business climate in November 2012.

House Speaker John Boehner placed the blame for the downgrade squarely at the feet of the Democrats, saying: “This decision by S&P is the latest consequence of the out-of-control spending that has taken place in Washington for decades. The spending binge has resulted in job-destroying economic uncertainty and now threatens to send destructive ripple effects across our credit markets.

“Republicans have listened to the voices of the American people and worked to bring the spending binge to a halt. We are no longer debating how much to spend, but rather how much to cut. Unfortunately, decades of reckless spending cannot be reversed immediately, especially when the Democrats who run Washington remain unwilling to make the tough choices required to put America on solid ground," Boehner said.

Although even S&P said both parties share responsibility, Democrats are intent on persuading voters to take their frustrations out on GOP candidates.

“This is what you do when you’ve got nothing else to do,” comments Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center.

Bozell tells Newsmax that the media have failed to hold the Obama administration accountable for policies that have hurt any economic recovery.

“What else can the left do?" Bozell says. "The left is entirely responsible for this disastrous turn of events in the economy.”

Instead of accepting that responsibility, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is launching a campaign called "Accountability August” that targets 44 House Republicans with negative radio ads in their districts.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fired the first salvo Thursday, with a USA Today Op-Ed titled “Unlike GOP, Democrats Will Focus on Jobs.”

Republicans, Pelosi alleged, “have put our economy at risk by threatening a first-ever default on our debt and refusing to propose legislation to create jobs. Instead, they’ve passed bills that would destroy up to 2 million jobs — nearly 10,000 jobs per day. And every time Democrats have brought a jobs initiative to the floor — 10 times so far — Republicans voted ‘no.’”

Obama urged Congress Friday to authorize a tax credit as an incentive to encourage businesses to hire veterans. The measure would provide a $2,400 credit for hiring an unemployed veteran on a short-term basis, and a $9,600 credit to firms that hire a veteran on a long-term basis.

“Both parties share power,” Obama said in a speech delivered at the Washington Naval Yard. “Both parties share responsibility for our progress. Moving our economy and our country forward is not a Democratic or a Republican responsibility, it is not a public or a private responsibility, it is a responsibility of all Americans.”

The speech Friday gave the president another opportunity to pivot to job creation a position himself in a positive light with independent voters, a strategy he employed throughout the debate over raising the debt ceiling.

On Wednesday, Obama appeared to presage Pelosi’s themes, telling reporters that the debt crisis, which he has blamed on House fiscal conservatives, has caused “an unnecessary negative impact on the economy.”

Obama also addressed the recently resolved impasse that temporarily sidelined thousands of FAA workers, calling it “a good example of how undone work here in Washington can have an adverse impact on that economy.”

Obama also mentioned the better-than-expected jobs numbers for July released Friday morning. Non-farm payrolls rose by 117,000 jobs, average hourly earnings grew by 0.4 percent, revisions added 56,000 jobs to the reports issued for May and June, and unemployment dropped from 9.2 to 9.1 percent. That uptick follows a correction on Wall Street that was punctuated by Thursday’s 512-point drop in the Dow.

"This is a fabulous number . . . This month I am totally relieved,” Moody’s chief economist Mark Zandi said on CBNC following the July jobs report. “This is a very big number, it's not only the payrolls it's the revisions, it's the unemployment rate, it's the average hourly earnings. We're not out of the woods yet, but this is a good sign that we are going to avoid a recession."

Paying the debt of our gratitude

A CEREMONY pregnant with meaning and undoubtedly tinged with sadness for many of those involved takes place in 'Kuching' this 31st, on the eve of our 50th Merdeka. [In Malay, "Merdeka" means "Independence" in spirits, thoughts and beliefs. 'Kuching' is the capital of Malaysia's eastern State of Sarawak].

The state’s civilian leadership, the military and police top brass and diplomats from Australia and Britain will gather for a ceremonial wreath-laying in memory of local and Commonwealth men numbering about 500 who fell in the immediate aftermath of the birth of Malaysia.

The ceremony is rare, perhaps only the first such occasion ever organised, made all the more poignant by ‘Kuching’ now lacking even a proper war memorial since the imposing cenotaph in the city’s then Central Padang was demolished and never resurrected, as the ceremonial patch of green metamorphosed into Padang Merdeka [Merdeka Square].

Since the Confrontation was never strictly speaking a war and did not have clear dates signifying its start and end, no dates held special significance for its commemoration. Perhaps this was why no such commemoration seems to have ever taken place before.

That the commemoration even takes place at all now owes a good deal to the efforts of a slight but persistent fellow in the person of retired secretary of the Legislative Assembly, Lim Kian Hock, working through the Sarawak Tourism Federation.

It is a very worthy commemoration, lest our younger generation forget that Malaysia did not start out as a land of milk and honey from Day One.

At the outset, Malaysia began life as a rather weak and vulnerable nation. In the immediate post-colonial era, Third World luminaries such as Indonesia’s President Sukarno loomed large as they strutted the global stage. His designs on the whole of Borneo were easily camouflaged by his seductive "neo-colonial" battle-cry that resonated among newly emerging nations all the way to Africa.

The claim to Sabah initiated by the late Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal has lingered unresolved until today.

Confrontation was particularly problematic because of the nearly 1500km of dense jungle between Sarawak and Sabah and Kalimantan. Moreover, many native inhabitants of Sarawak counted Indonesians across the border as kith and kin. It was just as well that Sukarno probably never intended Confrontation to be a serious military campaign, or it could well have been far more deadly and bloody.

Perhaps this particular commemoration really represented a coming of age for the nation. It shows we are no longer shy to admit that we had helped to defend our young nation then.

The bulk of the men who fell were Australian, British and New Zealand troops. We owe them not so much the oft-hyped abstraction called "freedom" as our distinctive way of life and, as Datuk Paddy Bowie would say, the "highly original political arrangement" we have since evolved in our beloved country.

It is perhaps the same debt that we collectively owe the Americans for the Indo-China campaign. The dreaded "Domino effect" stopped at the Thai border and the Vietnam War gave us precious time to strengthen our political and economic cohesion to take on the festering communist insurgency in our own backyard.

The current Iraq War has tragically undone much of the admiration and goodwill that the West had built up, not so much because we have grown and changed but because the West led by America has since refused to change and recognise that the end of the Cold War, not the attacks of Sept 11, 2001, fundamentally altered world politics.

Malaysia, born of Western goodwill and some sacrifice, has not developed as the West’s mirror image - and just as well. Emerging nations that claim to keep faith with Western-promoted notions and ideals have by and large fallen way short. None can really claim to have truly emerged based on following the Western-laid path.

Anthurium is a large genus of about 600- 800 (possibly 1,000) species, belonging to the arum family (Araceae). Anthurium can also be called "Flamingo Flower" or "Boy Flower", both referring to the structure of the spathe and spadix.
The species has neotropical distribution; mostly in wet tropical mountain forest of Central America and South America, but some in semi-arid environments. Most species occur in Panama, Colombia, Brazil, the Guiana Shield and Ecuador.
Anthurium grows in many forms, mostly evergreen, bushy or climbing epiphytes with roots that can hang from the canopy all the way to the floor of the rain forest. There are also many terrestrial forms which are found as understory plants, as well as hemiepiphytic forms. A hemiepiphyte is a plant capable of beginning life as a seed and sending roots to the soil, or beginning as a terrestrial plant that climbs a tree and then sends roots back to the soil. They occur also as lithophytes. Some are only found in association with arboreal ant colonies or growing on rocks in midstream (such as Anthurium amnicola).
The stems are short to elongate with a length between 15 and 30 cm. The simple leaves come in many shapes; most leaves are to be found at the end of the stems, although terrestrial plants show less of this pachycaul tendency. Leaves may be spatulate, rounded, or obtuse at the apex. They may be borne erect or spreading in a rosette, with a length that may surpass 100 cm in some of the larger species (such as Anthurium angamarcanum). The upper surface of the leaf may be matte, semiglossy, or fully glossy, and the leaf texture may range from leathery to fragile and papery. The leaves are petiolate and possess a structure called the geniculum, which is unique to the genus Anthurium. The geniculum allows the plant to swivel its leaves towards the sun, much in the same manner as sunflowers. In drier environments, the leaves can form a bird's-nest shaped rosette that enables the plant to collect falling debris, and thus water and natural fertilizer. Terrestrial growers or epiphytes often have cordate leaves; others grow as vines with rosettes of lanceolate leaves, and still others have many-lobed leaves.
