Dusty's Last Stand

Dusty's Last Stand

April 2000

Le Club

At the risk of belaboring the point (it has been mentioned in this column before) when people talk about going out clubbing in Whistler ninety-nine point nine percent of the time they're talking about going to that investment in concrete known as the town center. Club life in the hub of town has apparently gotten even better with the addition of one new and one relocated club, not to mention the still relatively new brew pub and the resurrection of the club near the convention center, as well as last winters opening of the subterranean club across from it. There doesn't seem to be a lack of nightspots in Whistler. It remains to be seen whether there will be line-ups outside every club in town this winter but given the profile of many Whistler visitors, not to mention Whistler residents, it's quite possible there will be.
There was a time though when the hot spot to go, the place to see and be seen, was down the highway a few miles. This club was located in a building which still stands, although it's slated for demolition in two more years. It was in this old building, right beside the new Whistler lift out of the Creekside, in the bar that's now called Dusty's. The place was called Le Club.
Le Club existed in the early eighties. It was a packed every night. It was so popular that by nine-thirty the room would be full and a line-up would start at the door that faces up the mountain (the one that opens onto Dusty's and the restaurant) By ten the line would turn ninety degrees and continue along the outside wall of Dusty's, the wall that faces up the mountain. By ten thirty it would turn ninety degrees again into the courtyard between Dusty's and the old gondola barn and end somewhere near the sports shop.
The boss would tell the doormen to stop letting people in when it took him more than ten minutes to force his way from the door that divides the bar from the restaurant to the door that divides the bar from the cafeteria, a distance of less than a hundred feet. Doormen were employed whose sole function was to watch four windows each to ensure patrons inside weren't opening the windows to let their friends outside get into the club. The place would be so jammed that four windows were about all any one doorman would be able to see.
Le Club was run by the same people who ran L'Apres for years: Big Leo, Peter and Maria, and Little Leo. Big Leo didn't have a lot to do with day to day operations, he was the big boss. Peter Skoros, his wife Maria, and Little Leo managed the club in a very hands-on way however, they would be in the club early and would remain there well into the wee hours of the morning. Peter went on to create Peters Underground beneath Tapley's. That enterprise went on to complete a circle last winter when it metamorphosed from a kind of family fast-food restaurant (based loosely on Fresco's in Vancouver) into another night club - sadly without Peter.
To describe the ambiance of Le Club is fairly simple. Picture Dusty's as it is today. Eliminate the pool table and the electronic games. Add a "gold-fish bowl disc-jockey booth" (as the Le Club DJ, who asked that his name not be mentioned, recently described it) to the wall between the bar and the door that divides the room from the cafeteria, a mirror ball to the ceiling, and several hundred hot, sweaty people dancing up a storm, and there it was.
The music was what made Le Club happen. The Police, Blondie, the B-52's, Elvis Costello, all were staples in the DJ's repertoire. A few cynical club patrons claimed they could tell what time it was by what song was playing.
'So Sad, Too Bad' was a particular favorite and was often played two or even three times back to back. Nobody complained. One night Doug Bennett came in while the song was playing, seemed slightly startled when it played again, then finally went over and tipped the DJ a penny when he played it a third time.
Tunes from the Rocky Horror picture show were also big. 'Time Warp' was guaranteed to fill the floor. When the doormen got bored they'd ask the DJ to play 'Rock Lobster' by the B-52s because that song moves to a point where the lead singer chants, "Down...down...down..." and the crowd would obey the command and slowly collapse into a heap of moist bodies. Then the lead guitar would pick up the driving rhythm again which would bring everyone bounding back to their feet. The only time one end of the club could be seen from the other end was in those brief intervals during that song.
Although it didn't really fit into the category of early eighties music 'Mack the Knife' by Bobby Darrin was also a popular song at Le Club and even Frank Sinatra could occasionally be heard warbling a tune. Joan Armatrading tunes were popular with some patrons. While the theme was early eighties the music selection was fairly eclectic. The Jesse Winchester tune 'Bowling Green' was often the last song of the eve

Jefferson Memorial, DC: night

[Minolta 500si Tamron 28-300 0eV evaluative, Kodak Gold ISO400 color negative film > Epson V300 scanner > Gimp]

...easy as pie, off a mini-tripod from a few hundred yards.
Decent focus, decently stable, no real noise to speak of...and 30MP.
How can I complain.

It has been quite a while sine this camera and lens have given me a bad shot.
What it does do, and what I'm having to work on, is burn through a roll of film in short order. I went to the Mall twice, Lake Artemesia once, the SW waterfront twice and to the Inner Harbor once the past few weeks and smoked through 6 rolls, 3 rolls in one hour one day and 2 rolls in one hour the next day. Of course a good # of those shots were test-shots and re-shots, but still. Even so I still haven't gotten some shots on film that I really wanted to get on film, because there was either too much light or I didn't have the right film, I ran out of ISO100 film a while ago and shot through all the ISO200 that I had in my bag and didn't know it until I was downtown & had to stuff ISO400 in the camera to shoot at all, even at noon on a clear sunny day. But it's hard to be somewhere in the hour around sunset when you have no real reason to go there other than to take pictures :) So I'll make some real reasons. That still means having the right film in the camera...not a very efficient way to shoot, really. If I wasn't in the mood to take test shots I wouldn't have taken shots in broad daylight with ISO400 film etc.

So, with digital gear you can shoot "for free" at whatever ISO you are willing to stand, just have to pay for the camera. With film you have to actually have the film on you to shoot it. That is much more of a problem than I thought as when I do shoot I tend to fly through rolls. I'm starting to buy film in packs of 16 at least. The faster film will last a while. ISO100 disappears like spring snow. And I never buy ISO400 anymore, it's too fast and too noisy for outdoor shooting most of the time and too slow for indoors and twilight shooting. Its only saving grace is that it works well on a tripod at night where the slower film gets too slow especially in a breeze.

Anyway it's just interesting to not worry about chroma-noise, color or cost, just grain and having the film I want to shoot in the first place. At 10 cents/shot I really can't complain about the cost. So my main concern is keeping the grain under control, relative to the shot I'm taking. In low light like this, on a tight crop like this, at 640x480, grain is just not an issue. Film is overkill for this. It's certainly capable of doing a good job on most of the shots that I want to take, except those that require a butter-smooth, ultra-clean yet highly-detailed shot, where even the slightest visible grain ruins the shot. Where even ISO100 film isn't good enough even with a great exposure.

You can make the case for that with any scene, with large-enough output.

With small-enough output you can shoot wide-angle landscapes with ISO1600 film and get away with it.

The results don't have to be perfect.
Just good enough for the display-size & viewing-distance.
Reliability counts for a lot more than ultimate IQ.

For $175 this rig gives me shots that are functionally superior to the output that I used to get from a $3000 5D with an equivalent Tamron lens. What I lose in terms of fine-detail and grain I more than gain in color realism, lighter weight and cost-savings. Could I say the same thing about a $175 SX130?

Honestly aside from the cost of the film and the occasional headache of dealing with a fullsize SLR and superzoom, I don't know if I really care. I'm not going to want to shoot an SX130 beyond ISO80 and I'm not even sure that I can deal with the color on day shots. I could easily see buying one, remarking that it sure is portable...but never wanting to actually use it when I could shoot film or the D70.

I mean, look: there is *no* visible noise here. At ISO400.
With no NR.
And decent color, if a touch green from a slight underexposure.
Why would I want to mess with that?

If you had a nice reliable mid-size car that performs well and is easy to afford and maintain, would you really trade it for a car that's more cranky and doesn't perform as well, just because it's cheaper and smaller? Would you really want to fly 2500 miles to go somewhere for a week and rely on a $150 point & shoot? Sure the SX130 might be better than film at ISO100. But I'd have to drop at least $150 on one just to find out. Is it really worth that investment?

DSCF4295 History of Rule of Law, Republic, Republicanism, Cato, and all the ministries and agencies of 'state' - or tribal unit

DSCF4295 History of Rule of Law, Republic, Republicanism, Cato, and all the ministries and agencies of 'state' - or tribal unit

Law. Complexity. Agencies.

I learned a lot from actually watching Allan Gerson's testimony in the Congress (Senate? was it?) I don't know about these days, but in 2005 and 2006, I saw a lot of good testimonies done by many respectable experts and professionals - and citizens - many many impressive, life changing quality ones. (On C-span)

Joi Ito - or Masayoshi Son - or Murai - whoever that is - we just need to connect C-span's some of the best footages available in Japan at like maybe 3 dollars a month (true, it's available on Web anytime today, but...)

That's enough. That'd contain enough seeds. Just connecting 'Web' - isn't up to the vision of original - founders of web - such as V Bush or JCR Licklider. That's the reason 'dwindling' situation of that volcanic islands - people are not really changed by merely hooking Web up and make it available. That's merely connecting pipes, and there is no 'blood' - in it. (There is a phrase about it - make a curved statue of a saint/buddha - but failing to place the soul/heart/life in it.)

And of course, I can guess that Joi Ito - or Son Masayoshi or Jun Murai has no understanding or recogniton about what's the real sweat and blood, salt and 'humanity' - of 'America'. They might learned something about technology or business etc - but those are partial gimics which can be transferred from somewhere to anywhere without shaking 'the ground'.

In that sense between that volcanic islands and America, nothing has been translated yet. We can have American studies, bunch of professors and bunch of grad students - and bunch and bunch more of books and papers.

But that won't hit the population. But those 2 hours, or 6 hours, or even total 30 - 40 hours of testimony, by witnesses and experts - whistle blowers - and senators and house reps - would strike some of the people in those islands.

They'd wonder. Hey that's some form of human - genuine interaction - genuine - rivalry but also collaboration and co-existence effort etc - going on with sweat and endurance, tradition and each individual's almost existential efforts and investments - to rules, cause, norms, values, ideals - and protocols and procedures -

How they do that. How they sustain that. How they can be so passionate about that. How they can be so dedicated to that?

America's occupation (well, I don't think this word is really appropriate word. It was much more like 'administration') - didn't bring that seed to those people.

And then we hooked with Internet. (Then is that my role to talk to them and talk to C-span and try to bring something out? But aren't there - I wish I had time to write more neatly about these things.)

And by now we know, on the both side of Pacific, we are not really making up the past 60 years or so - or much longer - mutual ignorance and cluelessness.

And that sadly wastes youth on both sides, especially on the side of Japan. They don't know what it takes. They don't feel the body temp. They don't see and feel the endurance of 'West' - ways of West. That's just really sad. How many kids and youth are we gonna ruin?

***
Also we today had brief conversation about Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the end, much of the experts of the world really don't look into why they hate each other, or why they really don't collaborate each other. We just end up observing 'phenomenons' - patterns of events and some listing of 'agents' appears in the theater - and become proficient about them.

But we never really understand why those groups of humans - interact in certain ways etc - humanity's 'IR" remain shallow - and un-cumulative.

*Cumulation only happens in - maybe - change in the laws - new laws, new kind of culture - etc - maybe not really in 'knowledge' or changes in 'knowledge' - really transforms how we - different kinds of humans interact. Maybe.

Many 'tribes' show up on the stage - of world - and each of them - just haven't got a clue about how to understand their own psychology - and also the others psychologies.

But greed, vanity, aggression, or then quest for better managed relation etc are pursued. Justifications and glorifications, accusations etc - turn into words and volumes of books.

We can have shelves and shelves of them. But still probably we won't know our and others' character, personality, inclinations, temper, etc - much at all.

things my father taught me: One: there's five cents

I thought I would give you all a laugh so: I bundled up and took my cough and cold on the road and walked around the neighbourhood for an hour or so and I realized what an ingrained influence our parents have on us when I glanced over and saw this. I don't know how many time my father would say "There's five cents" when we passed a can or bottle on the side of the road and as much as I would like not it is the first thought that always pops into mine. Perhaps I have chosen the wrong career and should have invested in a shopping by and large pack of plastic bags instead. Oh, who am I kidding. I am saving that fantasy for my retirement years.

Thinking of the Possibilities !

Thinking of the Possibilities !

One of my favorite times of year is when the garden catalogs start arriving in the mail.
I love to pour through them, making list's of all the new plants I'd like to purchase. I do research to see if the plant is likely to survive in my garden conditions, and of course the big question.....Will the deer eat it? What will my color palate be this season? Should I start a new garden bed? What would I put in it?
Oh, the possibilities!!!

Dad & Czech Airlines To Prague & Why I Missed Alexandra's Birth

Dad & Czech Airlines To Prague & Why I Missed Alexandra's Birth

Here's a picture (13th June, 2008, Abu Dhabi) of my dad, Denis George
Brooks, and Brother-in-law George. He's 76. He had is first heart attack at
age 63 and had a quadruple heart bypass and promptly gave up all smoking and
drinking and lost 50lbs in weight. Now, he refuses to quit working, and
lives most of the year in Abu Dhabi where he serves the expatriate community
with investment advice and options. Two weeks ago he had heart attack no.2,
and relentless as ever he hauled himself onto a plane and flew home. The
airplane hosts probably realised something was a little wrong when he
requested oxygen after the plane had taken off. He is now in Grimsby
hospital healing up a broken kidney, poorly heart and lungs. He's making
good progress now, but I was rather hoping to see him today.
I left on a 9:55pm flight to UK on Friday. Irena's water broke 11pm, three
weeks early, while she was supping a latte with friends in Prague. I landed
in UK and was greeted with 'Mark Brooks, please contact information.' Staff
ushered to me a phone to call my sister. I figured: 1.my dad's condition had
worsened, or 2.my nephew was trying to catch me before I hired a car, so he
could pick me up. But it was option 3. Irena's water had broken.

Back to Prague! If only I could. There were no more flights from the UK
that night. The information staff rallied to try and locate the next
possible flight for me. One was from Birmingham at 10:30 am and one was
from Gatwick at 7:30am on Czech Airlines (CSA). We spent the next two hours
trying to book the Czech Airlines flight to no avail. A bug on their
booking form prevented me from booking online, despite numerous attempts in
every iteration possible, with multiple cards. The Czech Airlines staff were
all niely tucked up in bed so I couldn't book it over the phone or via
Heathrow. I went with the 10:30am flight from Birmingham. Alas, that ended
up getting me in just a little too late to catch the birth. I'll be
choosing the non-CSA flights wherever possible in future. Czech Airlines
needs to pull its socks up. Easyjet, BMIBaby, RyanAir and Sky Europe all
offer better services to Prague, btw ;-)

Park Butte: The Epic Journey

Park Butte: The Epic Journey

Mount Baker National Park | Press L to view in lightbox

Destination: Park Butte Lookout, Mount Baker National Park.

Our epic journey began a week before the day of the hike. We were constantly checking snow levels, weather condition, and researched countless trip reports in and around the North Cascades Pass and Baker-Snoqualmie area. However, we did not find a recent trip report to Park Butte -- the last one was a little over a month ago.

The elevation of the fire lookout, our final destination point, is 5450 ft above sea level. A day before the hike, the snow level had dropped to approximately 3000 ft. This made us decide on procuring a pair of snow shoes each.

We left Seattle early Saturday morning and reached the trailhead a few minutes past 9 AM. We were roughly 500 yards away from the trailhead and had gotten stuck on the snow packed unpaved forest road. It was impossible for us to go any further without any snow chains -- we had to put them on.

The first 2 miles of the hike was relatively easy. Snow depth on the trail was about 6 inches at the most. It was mostly packed up until the first fork heading to Railroad Grade and Park Butte. Visibility was good -- we were able to see mountain ridges that were up to 2 miles away. Cathedral Craig and Survey Point were snow white with some evergreen and rocky peaks peeking out -- it was a beautiful scene. Just before reaching the fork heading to Railroad Grade Trail and Park Butte, we came across two climbers heading down. They were planning to climb Mount Baker -- elevation 10871 ft -- but they had to head back due to impossible snow levels.

Shortly after the fork, we put on our snow shoes. The trail was almost impossible to see and navigate. It had been covered with a fresh layer of powder. Even with snow shoes on, we were sinking knee deep in the snow. At times we got stuck waist deep in. We took turns on 'blazing the trail' -- it was so much harder than walking on sand especially that our backpacks weighed 45 lbs each. We covered about half a mile and the trail was completely gone.

We pulled out our contour map and compass, and oriented ourselves. Visibility was becoming poor. We were lucky to spot the forest lookout miles away before the dark and ominous clouds dropped lower. At that point, we had put together our plan of attack.

With luck and some navigation skills, were were able to hit two trail signs (one said toilet!). After going through seemingly unending flat, we reached a steep uphill point. Our pace was slow and painful.

We hit another fork at 4900 ft -- one trail heading to Park Butte Lookout and one to Mazima Park. Ryan, Corey, and I congratulated each other for reaching that point. Visibility had gone down to just 100 yards (roughly) -- it was almost a complete whiteout! So we decided to put down our packs and cook our much needed meal.

We got lucky to gain some visibility back (photo above). We saw the fire lookout and had planned our route on the final push. After 15 minutes, it was whiteout again.

The last mile was the most painful mile we've walked -- it took us nearly 3 hours. Again we were sinking knee and waist deep (balls deep according to Ryan). We had to 'blaze' a trail and switchback through the steepest areas. I definitely had contemplated on giving up, but the thought of reaching a nice and cozy fortress made us push on.

At exactly 5:00 PM we reached the fire lookout tower!

I'm completely exhausted now... I'll continue this trip report and catch up with your streams next time.

They have fallen into disrepair in recent years but are scheduled for a big renovation project.

To the top right of the shot the recently redeveloped Victoria Quays area is visible.

This shot was taken from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
