What is love?

For my friend Petra and anyone else who wants to read this.

Love may start with infatuation, maybe pheromones, let’s face it something attracts you to each other and it isn’t always explainable. When falling in love it should be a tie between the heart and the head (brains). Infatuation doesn’t usually last. Love is what comes after, and not necessarily with the total loss of some of the qualities of infatuation.

Love to me is like that favorite book I read over and over. It gets wrinkled and the edges of the pages become “dog eared” but I would never dream of throwing it away. I love it more. I look forward to picking it up again and re-reading it. I always find something I missed or overlooked or forgot about in this book. I find comfort in that old book and in the fact that I know most of it by heart. Some parts of it excite me make my heart beat faster. Some parts make me feel so strongly I get tears in my eyes. Sometimes I have to look for the significance and how it applies to me. It has never grown old or tiresome.

To start off with, I really don’t like talking about myself, because I feel that I post photos on here to showcase my passion behind the camera, not to talk about myself, good, bad or indifferent. But since I was tagged by several different people, I guess I’ll open up a little bit.

1. I probably started drinking coffee around 12 or so. I remember going to Roaring Camp (gold mining camp) and having it in the mornings while my mom was still alive. LOTS of sugar, and nothing else). I still drink 4 cups a day. I went cold turkey once and was dope sick for days. I was also addicted to chap stick for 8 years.

2. I actually am a 2nd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, which I started at age 11 when my brother joined and our parents thought it would be fun to do together. Chuck Norris was our head instructor at the time, which I only met once.

3. My mom died from smoking when I was 13. Sorry to all you smokers out there, but I absolutely despise it.

4. Every year, just before my birthday, I do a physical routine to make sure I’m not getting old. This includes: doing a backflip off a tall swing, running a mile, a “cherry drop” from the monkey bars, pushups/situps and random balancing acts. I’m not afraid of getting old, I’m afraid of being old.

5. My wife will confirm this; I have the world’s worst memory and am the worst speler. I’m always mixing up brides names, don’t remember appointments my wife tells me, and forget random things. As for spelling, I’m just lucky that there are spell checkers now.

6. I got my B.A. in Geography from UC Santa Barbara in 1996 and had planned as a graduation gift to myself to bicycle across country, dip my foot in the Atlantic and then fly back. This ended when Lockheed Martin hired me as a defense engineer and instead I moved to Philly for 4 years. I can't tell you what I do now or I'll ~~have to kill you~~ get sent to prison for treason.

7. My first date was when I was 19. Kiss too. Months later.

8. I don’t believe in owning pets, or the domestication of pets. I feel like its animal slavery, even if they love you and want to be with you. Fish are the exception, because they’re dumb and taste good on a small bed of rice.

9. I ran the 1996 LA Marathon on a dare. I completed it in.. about 5 ? hours. Don’t ever dare me to do something.

10. Unlike most people, I really haven’t been through a lot in my life and have absolutely no reason to be sad, emo, remorseful, bitter, etc. Okay, I have been through some stuff, but why let those little things bring down your whole demeanor and walk around kicking stones being sad all the time. I think about those born in 3rd world countries who drink, bathe and defecate in the same water source. Now they deserve to listen to dark music, wear hooded black sweatshirts, and get emo tats & piercings.

11. On a dare, since I was so insecure and shy, I decided to give improv comedy a try in Hollywood. I was hooked after the first class and it really helped me open up and be okay with exploiting my own insecurities and flaws. Since then I’ve had no problem with being in front of hundreds of people. This confidence might come across as ego here and in person, but those that know me know I’m just a goof and have a low tolerance for those without a sense of humor.

12. If I had more time and less A.D.D. I think I’d be a pretty good writer (as some of you may know from your testimonials.) I wrote a 90 page story for my English class in 11th grade inspired by a photo she put on the chalkboard. The story was supposed to be 2 pages, and I asked for an extension. I’ve written several other short stories/books, all Westerns.

13. I love Westerns more than any other movie genre, and I own over 40 John Wayne movies on tape. Just something simple and pure about that lifestyle.

13 ?. I’ve only been to the dentist twice since 1991. No cavities. No braces. Just a thick enamel layer. Gross? Don't worry, you're not kissing me.

14. I wasn’t the greatest student in middle or high school, but it wasn’t because I didn’t go to school. From the middle of 7th grade on, I never missed a day OR class in middle or high school. I also was never tardy. I never had any excused or unexcused absences in high school. I was at every single class, every single day, thus perfect attendance. I did this through illness as after my 10th grade year it became a personal goal and by 12th grade I was having nightmares of me waking up late and missing class. (still did until I was almost 30) So when I got to college my buddy said that was a pretty cool thing I did in high school, too bad you can’t do it in college… I did it in college too. Approximately 1400 days or 8,500 classes straight without a miss or tardy. This stopped in 2000 when I was going to grad school at Penn State and had to miss a class in order to take a work trip to Australia.

Club 57 Series: Ann Craig

I recall that Ann was an artist. I really had to dig to find things about her. I would see Ann around the East Village often, but she was a bit of a mystery for me. She would disappear and reappear at the strangest of times. Things moved so fast in those days and so much was going on. It was easy to lose track of things and people. A lot of it all seems a daze to me now. Ann was a regular emcee of shows and a performer at The Pyramid Club in the the early 80s. She was the regular host of Bobby Bradley's Sunday night performance art event called "Cafe Iguana. She would always do an amazing monologue that seemed to be rambling, but then she would somehow pull things out of the air to a magic grand finale and it would all somehow all make sense. She was an East Village fixture with her eye makeup that looked like thick magic marker. Her job description was "urban shaman," and she truly felt that her mission was to offer a sense of community and healing along with the humor and theater. She was an early AIDS victim.

Cross-dressing

Cross-dressing is the act of wearing clothing commonly associated with the other gender within a particular society. The usage of the term, the types of cross-dressing both in modern times and throughout history, an analysis of the behaviour, and historical examples are discussed in the article below.

Nearly every human society throughout history has distinguished between male and female gender by the style, color, or type of clothing they wear and has had a set of norms, views, guidelines, or even laws defining what type of clothing is appropriate for each gender. Cross-dressing is a behavior which runs significantly counter to those norms and therefore can be seen as a type of transgender behavior. It does not, however, necessarily indicate transgender identity; a person who cross-dresses does not always identify as having a gender different from that assigned at birth.

The term cross-dressing denotes an action or a behavior without attributing or proposing causes for that behavior. Some people automatically connect cross-dressing behavior to transgender identity or sexual, fetishist, and homosexual behavior, but the term cross-dressing itself does not imply any motives. However, referring to a person as a cross-dresser suggests that their cross-dressing behavior is habitual and may be taken to mean that the person identifies as transgendered. The term cross-dresser should therefore be used with care to avoid causing misunderstanding or offense.

There are many different kinds of cross-dressing, and many different reasons why an individual might engage in cross-dressing behaviour.
Some people cross-dress as a matter of comfort or style. They have a preference towards clothing which is only marketed to or associated with the opposite sex. In this case, a person's cross-dressing may or may not be visible to other people.

Some people cross-dress in order to shock others or challenge social norms.

Both men and women may cross-dress in order to disguise their true identity. Historically, some women have cross-dressed in order to take up male-dominated or male-exclusive professions, such as military service. Conversely, some men have cross-dressed in order to escape from mandatory military service.

Single-sex theatrical troupes often have some performers cross-dress in order to play roles written for members of the opposite sex. Cross-dressing, particularly the depiction of males wearing dresses, is often used for comic effect onstage and onscreen.

Drag is a special form of performance art based on cross-dressing. A drag queen is usually a male-bodied person who performs as an exaggeratedly feminine character, in heightened costuming sometimes consisting of a showy dress, high-heeled shoes, obvious makeup, and wig. A drag queen may imitate famous female film or pop-music stars. A faux queen is a female-bodied person employing the same techniques.

A drag king is a counterpart of the drag queen but usually for much different audiences. A female-bodied person (often lesbians) who adopt a masculine persona in performance or imitates a male film or pop-music star. Some female-bodied people undergoing gender reassignment therapy also self-identify as drag kings although this use of "drag king" would generally be considered inaccurate.

Transgendered people who are undergoing or have undergone gender reassignment therapy are usually not regarded as cross-dressing. Namely, a transsexual who has completed gender reassignment surgery is certainly not considered cross-dressing, unless they were to wear clothes of the gender opposite of what they have transitioned to. Pre-operative transsexuals may be considered similarly.

A transvestic fetishist is a person (typically a heterosexual male) who cross-dresses as part of a sexual fetish.

The term underdressing is used by male cross-dressers to describe wearing female undergarments under their male clothes. The famous low-budget filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr. said he often wore women's underwear under his military uniform during World War II.

Some people who cross-dress may endeavour to project a complete impression of belonging to another gender, down to mannerisms, speech patterns, and emulation of sexual characteristics. This is referred to as passing or "trying to pass" depending how successful the person is. An observer who sees through the cross-dresser's attempt to pass is said to have read them. There are books and magazines on how a man may look more like a woman.

Sometimes either person of a heterosexual couple will wear it to arouse the other. For example, the Male would wear skirts or lingerie and/or the Female will wear boxers or other male clothing. (See also forced feminization)

Others may choose to take a mixed approach, adopting some feminine traits and some masculine traits in their appearance. For instance, a man might wear both a dress and a beard. This is sometimes known as genderfuck.

Rachel was lit by two 800W continuous light sources. Main light was about 10 feet back over her right shoulder and cast the shadow on the wall. The second light was lower and to camera right providing front lighting. The white wall also provided fill lighting to her right side face. Both lights were roughly 45 degrees to the flat surface of the wall. It was high contrast lighting with bare bulbs.

The original capture was great, but I did the following to bump it up a notch.

The RAW image was fine tuned for white balance, and adjustments were tweaked for clarity and vibrancy, black level and exposure we adjusted for full luminance range without clipping. Saturation (adding about 4%) were balanced between highlights and shadows to match the scene as I remembered it.

The image was then brought into Photoshop (CS5) and cropped using the rule of thirds, placing the eyes in a position of interest in the framing. Harsh lighting is very unforgiving to skin, so minor cosmetic touch-up with a healing brush and clone tool were used on the skin. The blur tool was also used on the skin for additional smoothing and softness.

For the eyes, the following tools were used with very light settings ( 8 - 15 %): The sharpen tool was used on the eyes, eye lashes and the parting of the lips; sponge tool on de-saturate was used on the whites of the eyes; Burn tool was used on the outer edge of the iris; and the lighten tool was used in the center annular area of the iris. Finally, the sponge tool on saturate was used on the overall iris in order to intensify the color. [The image needs to be viewed full size to see this]

A couple of ever so subtle enhancements were also applied:

An additional technique was used to draw the viewer’s attention into the face. A 2nd layer was added with a box shaped gradient layer with a 45 degree rotation, and it was placed over the Rachel’s face: white in the center, black at the edges. Blend mode was set to screen, and the opacity was set very very low. Masking was used to eliminate the effect from Rachel’s skin and where it was distracting on the front wall. The final effect is very slight, and it’s not even noticeable unless you know it’s there.

A copy of the flattened image was saved at this point, and HDR toning was applied to the image. Radius of the edge glow is a critical adjustment in the process so the HDR effect is not overdone.. The HDR toned image was placed in a new layer above the previously saved copy of the image. The opacity was then reduced with a color multiply blending option. This adds a little kick to the image, bringing out the hair highlights. This has to be applied with a light touch to look natural.

This evening will undeniably be for me a tremendous event. This award, all the nice things that have been said about me this evening, and the attendance of so many friends, some from very far away, and some that I have not seen in years, all of this deeply touches me. But this award is not mine alone. I share it with many people whom I have been lucky enough to rub shoulders with. Humble team workers from the political community, as well as civil society. In accepting this award, I would like to thank all the young men and women who never gave up on Africa, all these women who are supporting Africa.

On this evening, my thoughts are with all of the people that many of us, including myself, have decided to help so that they could find their place in the sun. On this evening, as on any other evening, I cannot help but think of the many children who, on our continent, go to sleep on an empty stomach only to wake up crying the next morning. On this evening, I think, as all of you do, of all the people who are dying on another continent when there are drugs to cure them. To die of malaria today, or to die from drinking unsuitable water, so will be the fate of many of them. On this evening, my thoughts turn to all these children who, unlike ours, have not had and will not have the opportunity to go to school to learn to read and count, children who will not experience a fulfilling life simply because they can neither read nor write. On this evening, I think of all the children that have been denied youth. Instead of allowing them to play, we gave them arms and made them into soldiers. Needless to say, on this evening I think of all the women who have become heads of families, as indeed did some of their children, and whose dignity has forever been tainted by violence, especially in areas of conflict.

Hard as I try, never will I be able to forget all the handicapped persons that I saw in Sierra Leone, their hands cut off, their arms cut off, their nose cut off, and their ears cut off, even at two years of age. As a matter of fact, I saw children that were not even two who will be forever handicapped, thanks only to human stupidity. This award also brings to mind some great men who have showed us the way and whose footsteps we will always thread on. His Excellency, Ambassador Perkins referred to some of them. From this great land of yours, there is Martin Luther King, an accomplished man who gained immortality at the age of 35. I also think of a man who we all knew and who, having left us way too soon, is dearly missed by his country. I am thinking of John Garang who clearly understood that nothing could justify the sorrow.
On this evening, I am reminded very strongly of a man who is amongst us and who, even though he is only human, has gained immortality through his boundless love, dignity and humanity, values that he truly personifies. I am speaking of Nelson Mandela who, more than anybody else, knows that he is only human but that the values he embodies are timeless. There is another great African [unintelligible] whom I would like to single out if only because he dreamed of a special Africa, an Africa that may be the answer to the thousands of issues that now plague our continent. A united Africa. That is what our Heads of State had in mind when they established the African Union.

Back in 1999, when African Heads of state met in Sirte, they quickly grasped that the OAU, created in 1963, had run its course. The OAU helped free the continent. The OAU helped bring about the end of apartheid. But the OAU was unable to remedy problems of governance, peace and economic development, as these issues were not part of its mandate. The OAU was a solidarity-based intergovernmental cooperation organization, which many tried to repeatedly revamp and update over the years, as its followers well know. But we realized, back in 1999, that reorganizing or restructuring the OAU was pointless. What we needed was a new organization that would not be limited to intergovernmental cooperation but one of an integrative nature.

Thus was established the African Union. The African Union acts as a forward thrust that will one day enable all 53 African States to merge into one single great country, that of Africa, inhabited by men and women of African citizenship. It is the African Union that is now leading the way and whose Commission I now preside. Unlike the OAU, which only had a Secretariat, the Commission is intended as a kind of governing body of the African Union. Other than the Commission, the African Union now boasts a Pan-African Parliament, a first in the history of our continent. COMMON QUESTIONS ON CARROT JUICE

1. Is carrot juice taken raw, and if so, why are not raw carrots just as useful? Carrot juice is taken raw. The reason raw carrots are not as good as the juice itself is that the hard, coarse, fibrous material of raw carrots makes it impossible for the body to extract more than a fraction of their value. All of the wholesome elements of the carrots are secured in the juice and much larger quantities can be taken in liquid form without any comparative digestive strain or irritation.

2. How much carrot juice should be taken daily? One pint, taken between meals, appears to be the minimum daily requirement for adults. Begin with a little and work up to larger amounts. Some patients have taken a quart daily and the taking of maximal amounts has had no harmful effects. However, carrot juice often irritates and burns a raw and sensitive stomach such as one frequently finds in ulcers, cancer, or digestive disorders, but if taken with cream or rich mik[sic] or following a gelatine food, this unpleasantness is generally prevented.

3. Should other food be taken? Yes, a diet that is essentially alkaline should be continued throughout. Here is a building up program that I have found effective: A pint or more of carrot juice daily, together with cream or rich milk (fresh or evaporated); bananas and cream; pureed vegetables; gelatine foods made from pure gelatine and sweetened with a natural sugar such as maple syrup or honey. Other fruits and vegetables may also be utilized to advantage.

4. Should the use of drugs to relieve pain be discontinued? Our experience is that patients who continue the use of drugs exhibit very little improvement under any building up program. One of the chief reasons is that narcotics are extremely constipating and lead to disastrous retention of body wastes when elimination should be kept at its best. A simple method of relieving pain is to use hot fomentations or epsom salt packs over the affected area. Ice packs are used in appendicitis. Deep, gentle breathing with almost complete deflation of the lungs on exhaling has been found to be a remarkable aid in controlling pain.

5. Is carrot juice valuable in all disease? Carrot juice is not a cure-all and there are some disorders where its value is doubtful. Carrot juice should not be used in large amounts for acute colds, influenza, pneumonia or the acute fevers until convalescence begins. The reason is that in most of these disorders the body is eliminating toxins through the affected surfaces and any food, carrot juice included, only tends to augment the problem of elimination. While carrot juice is not prescribed for acute catarrhs, it is very effective in correcting chronic infections, such as chronic tonsilitis, colitis and appendicitis. It is effective in controlling tuberculosis, malnutrition, anemia, stones, acidosis, blood poisoning, faulty circulation, ulcers and infections as in childbirth and post-operative cases. One local mother, through abundant use of carrot juice, was able actually to nurse triplets for a full nine months.

6. How is carrot juice prepared? Carrot juice can be made in one's own kitchen by using as simple an utensil as a fifteen-cent tin grater to grate the carrots, then squeezing the grated carrot in a strong piece of cloth such as cotton huck toweling. The grater should be one that reduces the carrot to a fine pulp. One in the shape of a four-sided, hollow stand and available in most hardware stores is a good hand grater for this purpose. Another method of home preparation is to grind the carrots through a food chopper that has a very fine or pulverizing blade and then squeeze the pulp in a cloth or in some small press. There are several types of hand machine graters that can be used as well. There are also a number of specially designed juice extractors available in hardware or health food stores, most of them designed to grind and press juice from vegetables in one operation. Most of them are satisfactory for celery and the leafy vegetables, but a separate press and grinder seem to be required for efficient carrot juice extraction. These small machines are being improved constantly and we feel it imprudent to recommend any particular one. The prospective customer will have to make his own choice.

In many cities fresh carrot juice is available through health food stores or vegetable juice dealers. For commercial manufacture, large and rather expensive machinery is necessary. The large scale machinery used here consists of an electrical cleaner, an electrical grinder similar to a large meat grinder, and a heavy press with a perforated steel container for the pressing of the pulp. It is necessary to line these presses with cloth so the pulp will not be forced through with the juice.

The juice should be capped and refrigerated as soon as extracted and kept constantly cold. It will keep fresh and sweet for two days or more but spoils rapidly if it becomes warm. Celery or

Bongbong Marcos for Senator

There are mixed feelings about the return of the Marcoses to the country, But Bongbong Marcos, in his 20's when Edsa I drove the family into exile in Hawaii, has been back here for several years now, gone into politics, and come out clean and winsome. The son of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, he was the first in the family to come home in 1991. No harm was done him by people who had taken control of the government after his father's disposition. In just a year in 1992, he was elected to the House of Representatives as representative of the second district of Ilocos Norte. In 1998, he ran and won for the first three terms as governor of Ilocos Norte.
His public relations man says - and no one seems to contest this claim - in his nine years as governor, he transformed Ilocos Norte into a first class province, a major tourism destination, and a pioneer in harnessing wind power for energy. Says the p.r. man of the young Marcos: " He has carved his niche in his own way. He is not your typical politician. He does not open his mouth unless he has something to say. And he exerts power and leadership without bombast."

As governor, he raised agricultural productivity in the province by focusing on rice production and cash crops, invested resources in hybrid seedlings production; set up a successful cooperative development, turned the province into a major tourism Philipine destination by improving infrastructure, developing the province's special natural attractions, and capitalizing on Laoag City's being an international gateway into the country. He also provided 100 percent of his provincemates with health insurance. Importantly, he harnessed wind power as an alternative source of energy for the province.

In 2007, he returned to the House of Representatives, where he is now Deputy Minority Leader. Despite being an opposition leader, he has successfully championed the passage of significant legislation, including the country's Baseline Law. This law defines the boundaries of the national territory according to international law, while retaining the country's claim to lands under dispute with other nations.

Bongbong as congressman championed the cause of the Filipino youth and spearheading the passage of the Philippine Youth Commission Act. The law empowers young Filipinos to take an active role in the civic and political life of the nation. The " historic act, " says Bongbong's p.r. officer, " reflects a fundamental part of Bongbong's vision and understanding of Philippine society. In his view, the Philippines is a predominantly young country - young in population, young in outlook, and with its eyes turned towards the future rather than the past. This young population gives the nation a large human resource base which, harnessed and educated properly, can propel the Philippine society into the heights of modernization and development.

Bongbong's baptism of fire took place much earlier, when at the age of 23, he was elected vice-governor of Ilocos Norte in 1980.
Bongbong is now 51, shows characteristics of his father, whom he absolutely adores, and bears the features of his famous mother, Imelda Romualdez Marcos, whom he holds up affectionately, His mother, he told us at a dinner in Abe, a nice restaurant at Serendra, has not lost her touch for beautiful things and people from all walks of life.
Bongbong was born in Manila on Sept. 13, 1957. He finished his elementary education at De la Salle College, and his secondary education in the Worth School in England. He took a bachelor's degree in political science, philosophy and economics at Oxford University. From there he moved to the Wharton School of Business in the US for his masters in business administration.

Bongbong has three teenage sons by Louise Araneta, a lawyer. All three are now studying at his old Worth school, which, to his dismay, has become co-ed.

What was the reason for hosting a dinner for media persons ? Bongbong flashed his charm. We guessed it, he is running in the 2010 senatorial election. I guess majority of us at the dinner will vote for him. I think he will do a good job as legislator, and not hold on to power for life.

Deep Listening Chair 2009, the 3rd edition of Tokyo's festival for Experimental Digital Music and related Visual Arts will take place under the theme Surrealistic Minimalism. Sound and other media from July 10 till July 11, 2009 at various venues in Tokyo.
Edition NIkO will address both theoretical and practical aspects of today’s independent and experimental music production at the intersections of digital music and sound & media arts. Artists, experts and theorists will present their work as a means to pool knowledge and sketch out the sector’s future prospects. Visitors can hone their personal skills in workshops designed to encourage and support DIY experimentation. Selected projects and initiatives will demonstrate what they do in a hybrid formats fusing exhibitions and work-in-progress sessions that engage visitors’ participation. Actions and installations will illustrate further examples of creative output wiring music, art and digital culture.
For the DLC.09 on July 11, legendary mille plateaux artist and one of the most respected reputations in avant-garde laptop music, and rightfully so, as he has established a highly notable presence in the multimedia experimentation of the late 20th and early 21st century. "Christophe Charles" will perform his live using his computer programs, insisting on the autonomy of each sound and the absence of hierarchical structure.
On a same day, most revered name in noise-electronic music today, Tetsuo Furudate will perform his noise-opera composition. Contributing to the development of the Japanese noise music in its early period with other pioneers, and apart from his numerous solo works as Furudate Tetsuo, Tetsuo has collaborated with Achim Wollscheid (selektion), Merzbow (mego), Zbigniew Karkowski (sub rosa), Kasper T. Toeplitz (NIkO) and more other noise musicians.
Perhaps one of the most prolific and ceaselessly inventive personalities to come out of the electronic music community since the 1990s, Yurihito Watanabe, the man behind yxetm+, has accumulated literally dozens of musical directions over the course of his illustrious career. Working with David Toop, Alva noto, CM von Hausswolff, Yurihito is increasingly attracted to pushing the barriers of his art form in new directions.

Never underestimate rabbits

With the Chinese Year of the Rabbit fast approaching (it’s Feb 3rd in case you didn’t know!) I thought it best to get this one out of the way. This is why i’m dubious as to what will happen in 2011.

I think the clue is in the title on this one. We all know that rabbits are hardly trustworthy at the best of times right? Well i can safely say that you can never underestimate one that tests make up on itself! They are definitely the worst kind and not to be trusted under any conditions. You can just see it in their beady little eyes.

Consider this more of a warning sign than anything else. You have been warned…

Ugh, once again camera's can just NEVER do justice to an eyeshadow look that incorporates duocrome colors. It's so not fair :( trust me in true life this look was AMAZING!

I went to use the Blue from the Wet n Wild Blue Had Me At Hello 8 Pan Palette and notice it had a green duocrome sheen to it which automatically reminded me of a peacock. So I changed my mind from doing an all blue look to a look inspired by a peacock and it just so happens that the Wet n Wild 8 Pan Color Icon Palette in Comfort Zone has some other nice duocrome colors in it. So from that palette I used the right green eyelid color for the inner corner of my eyes because it has a duocrome gold sheen and then I used the right definer color for my outer corner and under eye because it has a green duocrome sheen. And I used a little of the left browbone color to highlight under my brows. It was quite intense in person.
