A Day of Family and Understanding Tonight, I realized that because I hadn’t seen, felt, smelled, tasted and touched love that only your famliy-no matter how frusterating sometimes-can give. I realized that I needed to hold little Vivian and Finn, and to hear a giggle or two from of Claire and Annika. I needed to be hugged by one of my cousins who I hardly ever see, and I needed to be talked to by them as though they really care. I realized that seeing a little bit of PDA is actually beautiful, if it’s in moderation, because in moderation, you know just how much one person loves the other, just by their “PDA”. I realized that my grandmother’s potato salad will live on in infamy not only because it tastes amazing, but becuase it was made with love and care that only a grandmother’s hands and heart can give. My day started with a trip to Chuck E. Cheese, which was so much fun. I went with my sisters, aunt, and a huge group of cousins. It was the second time I’ve ever been there in my entire life, and all I can remember from the first time is that my cousin Breezy was trying to show me that the dancing Chuck E. Cheese (and friends) dolls weren’t a thing to be scared of, but I still cried. Those things are still kind of freaky. Then we all went over to my Aunt Pat and Uncle Rick’s house. At first I wasn’t too sure about everything, but it ended up being fun. We all played with the little kids and I got to hold Vivian and Finn (they’re the two babies in my family right now.) There were some bikes outside and so Scott (one of my cousins) and I went on a short bike ride, and then 3Q and I did the same thing. The only difference was that we were biking in 3Q’s old neighborhood, so he knew where to go. We talked about life in general, and how it was treating both of us. His girlfriend Alexis is so nice. Last night I was talking to her and 3Q and she told me that my purple shoes were sexy. :) After the bonfire started earlier, I had this really awesome conversation with Breezy’s boyfriend, Mikey, about religion. I loved what he said, it was something along the lines, of ’I don’t really know if there’s a spiritual God, or if they’re a man or a woman, or a “person”. All I know is that after I die, my body’s going to decompose, and then new life is going to come from it. What is a more comforting thing to think of than that?’ So to close this, I’m going to explain something about me that no one knows. I’m known by a few people as religious. I actually have a really hard time with religion in general, and I keep having these revelations about what religion really is and who God is to me. I just think that I need a way to figure that out without losing myself first. I’m going to bed now. I have a 6 hour car-ride home tomorrow, and a loong week ahead of me. I just have two more things: 1. 3Q is my nickname for my cousin Quinn. I called him QuinneyQuinnQuinn for awhile. You get it? 3 Q’s? and 2. I really remembered what love is tonight and it feels so good. XOXO These men fight hard for position in the rain on a slippery down hill curve in the Elite 3 Men group in the 2011 Nith River Road race, Ontario Cup Road Series #4 May 22, 2011 in Wellesley, Ontario Once again I leave the comfort of the studio and controlled lighting to stand in the pouring rain, with poor lighting trying to capture fast moving objects. While these men did smile for me they did not stop to pose, just like those annoying birds this past winter. ^_^ If you were racing that day, drop me a line, I might have a shot of you too. I did great until I had to stop quickly and I couldn't get my feet unclipped from the pedals in time. I tipped over and my left elbow took the brunt of the fall. I broke a bone in there and have been in a cast for 2 weeks. It comes off Friday. I will be riding again ASAP. Yes, with the clips and all. :) And Liz, here! I have a shirt on and am posing with the bike so you can see! Happy now? Roz Savage Getting The Bike Ready Ocean rower Roz Savage, and team leader of Team Roz of which I was a member, was loaned a great Specialized bike. Here a mechanic is putting pedals on the bike to match Roz's shoe cleats. It was the first time she'd biked with cleats and she took off with great speed. 025 lane emerging bay st 29042009310 041 As in other corridors in Victoria and elsewhere that bike lanes are emerging as a treatment of choice to support cycling, the adaptation of motorists to the guidance provided by road markings is immediate and visible on the road. It runs counter to the ideology of cyclists who oppose bike lanes, sometimes using the rhetoric that a painted line on the road offers no protection for cyclists. Clearly the ability of drivers to read and understand stencils and markings that define space for everyone on the road provides well for the safety of cyclists and other traffic. Along Victoria's Bay St., bike lanes are being added in short sections taking advantage of unique funding opportunities to assist tight municipal budgets with costlier infrastructure projects. This piece, now complete, at least for a couple of blocks, was funded by British Columbia's provincially owned, government auto insurance agency with the intent to reduce accidents and thus claims at the intersection in the distant background. The bike lanes were opportunistic additions to the project as the road segment went on a "diet from 4 lanes to 3 as much to accommodate dedicated left turn movements at the intersection, where too many dangerous and costly collisions were occuring. The public insurance corporation also specifically supports bike lane projects in some locations where cyclist safety may be an issue. Their analysis indicates a safety dividend from bicycle lanes, countering the frequently dismissed criticisms of anti-bike lane ideologues. The insurer uses accident and claims history to inform their policy, making a strong case that clear evidence supports increased safety for cyclists where bike lanes are provided. Another Fender Bent, Another Motorist Subsidy This was the scene as I emerged from Central park this morning: two drivers bumped each other, so they parked in the bus stop, inconveniencing all the bus passengers, and called a cop, who had to come down and provide free loss adjustment services for an hour or so for their insurers instead of catching bad guys. Just another subsidy motorists unfairly sucked from from the rest of us. Why are cops required to do this for motorists? It yields absolutely no public benefit in terms of safety or otherwise. It only helps the motorists make claims on their insurers, and those insurers to make claims against each other. If cops spent as much time investigating and documenting bike thefts--many of which involve as much financial loss as a typical fender bender, and which reflect actual crime that should be a priority--we might catch more bike thieves and see fewer bike thefts. But the investigation in this picture isn't going to do a bit of good for anyone but the parties involved and their insurers. Why am I paying for it? IMG 7861 Unique Perspective Assignment for Digital Photography Class. Taken with the camera braced against a gymnasium wall. Another picture that I thought was good until I saw it on my computer. I should have made a few changes: 1) I should have held the lens vertically either in the middle of a block or along the mortar line. As it is, the convergence is less effective. 2) I should have moved the focus farther into the foreground. As taken, the intent was to focus near the left-right center of the framing. However, that served to minimize the focal point, which eliminated the interesting view that my eye saw (and the camera didn't capture). 3) Even though the histogram said it was bracketed (dark -vs- light balance) it is too dark. None of the points were critical, but together they killed the shot. Good thing it's digital!!! :-) I'm going to try to retake this shot at one of my daughter's upcoming games with the corrections, and see if it comes out better. now fixed I've rebuild my old messenger bike. The last time I've ridden this bike I got snakebites at front and rear, while riding in the dark across a cutted fence foot. This foot was watching about 7 cm out of the ground. So I don't touched this bike for about six months. Now I thought it was the time to get it out of the cellar and back on the streets - now as fixed gear. This is the first shot from a early morning test tour in the direction to Seelze. Two days after this shot I've got some straps as a gift. So I can ride much better and the bike is more complete now. a rock and roll picture of seth's bike the day it got fixed. it's a funny story. The wheel that I put on Seth's raleigh technium, originally existed.. came into being.. to complete MY very first fixed gear ride.. none other than a blue raleigh technium (not sure they came in any other color). It seemed fitting for it to find its way home. Seth rocked a pretty good track stand his first try. Unfortunately, it took too long, and it was pretty much dark when we got going again. Still, this roadside fix was good enough to go another 10+ miles to get back to my car parked at the start in Spring Valley. Vintage Kuwahara Racing Bicycle My newest ride. Built from mostly NOS Japanese parts and a brand new vintage OEM Kuwahara-made racing bike frame. Song Seng Chan, my LBS, made racing bikes under their Camel Brand label with these frames in the 70s. Danger High Voltage! This was taken just next to the Turf Locks Pub. There is a lock gate here as it's the point where the Exeter Ship Canal meets the Exe Estuary. I think that this cabinet contained electrical equipment related to the operation of the lock. It was certainly a very vivid yellow colour, and looked like it had been painted recently as there was very little sign of rust! A few rust streaks coming off the hinges would have worked a treat, but unfortunately things like this would not be allowed to become too dilapidated with all that high voltage inside. Just as I took the picture there was a cyclist with a matching yellow bike who walked past, pushing his bike. There is a small marina in the background. old vs new my well pump went out the other night... i heard it short cycling in an odd manner one night this week and the next day after a load of laundry i lost water pressure. The relay was buzzing on the control box every couple of minutes so i shut off the breaker before i burned up the relay. pressure tank had ~5 psi... i pumped it up with a bike pump and released the valve to see what might come out. air. wiring looked good and i was getting good voltage when the breaker was on. after testing the run capacitor It was apparent that at the least the cap was done. nobody local had any to sell so I called up grainger and got one next day. fixed for ten bucks.
