Old Red - I love ya! The Old Red Courthouse. Oh..and that building to the left? The School Book Depository on the corner of N. Houston and Elm. eee! The incredible view from our hotel. Amazing. Duane and I visited Dallas on April 3rd and 4th 2008. We experienced Dealey Plaza and the site of the John F. Kennedy’s assassination by “alleged” gunman Lee Harvey Oswald. We had never been there before but it feels familiar. The site is so iconoclastic…it just boggles your mind. We visited the 6th Floor Museum in the School Book Depository and viewed the Oswald’s sniper nest and experienced a full historical review of that day in Dallas. No photos were allowed, so that was a bit of a bummer. If you are a history buff, you must visit. Marilie Beauchamp de Canada en Zipolite Playa Zipolite is a small beach community which lies on the Pacific coast of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, about three kilometers west of the village of Puerto Angel. It, along with Puerto Angel, San Agustinillo, and Mazunte are known as the "Riviera Oaxaquena" or the "Costa Chica". The name Zipolite, sometimes spelled Sipolite or Cipolite, may have come from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, meaning "bumpy place" or "place of continuous bumps or hills". [1] Another possible origin of the name is from the Zapotec language, meaning "beach of the dead", so-called for its dangerous ocean currents and riptides, which have taken numerous lives.[2] Due to rugged mountains to the north and a series of river deltas to the east and west, the coastal Zapotec indigenous people of the area (referred to as Costenos) were largely isolated from the rest of Mexico until the 1970s. During that time the primary means of communication with the rest of the world were the ships that would stop in Puerto Angel to pick up coffee brought down from the plantations in the hills by burro. The area also had a productive fishing industry, and exported sea turtle shells. In the late 1970s a group of hippies famously came to Playa Zipolite to camp and watch a solar eclipse. Enchanted by the beach's beauty and isolation, they stayed, and a small permanent community began. Locals living nearby quickly reacted to this new source of income, and gravitated towards the beach where they offered simple lodgings and services and developed a small colony. More recently, an British traveller has also made Zipolite his home who has legally changed his name to Crazy Horse Invincible. About an hour's walk from the town of Puerto Angel, the beach's isolation, complete lack of law enforcement, and fiercely independent and tolerant nature of the locals created an ideal location for traveling hippies seeking a simple lifestyle free of modern social conventions. Nudity was common and accepted, and marijuana was cheap and prevalent. Zipolite's signature beach, the Playa del Amor (Beach of Love)[3], generated a certain amount of fame in Mexico and among foreign travelers as a free-love paradise.[1] Over the 80's and early 90's, Zipolite's population grew. The use of hard drugs became more prevalent, and the town began to develop more of a reputation for wild behavior and party vacations with no rules. Crime and violence began to be a problem, and the government responded by sending in military patrols, which drove out the more dangerous elements and kept drug traffic under control. Then by the late 90s, a fundamental demographic change began, as rising prices essentially drove out the predominantly low-budget, long-term hippie residents, who discovered that their money went a lot further on the beaches of Asia and Central America. This may have also been precipitated by the near complete destruction of the town in 1997 by Hurricane Paulina, after which many of the simple beach huts were rebuilt as larger cement guest houses. Throughout the early 2000s, tourism in Zipolite decreased and the town struggled to adapt to a changing clientele, one still interested in rustic adventure travel, but more inclined to simplicity and a beach lifestyle than wild behavior. By 2007, lack of demand, stepped up law enforcement, and political infighting between drug cartels had effectively forced most of the hard drugs out of Zipolite, with marijuana dropping back to near baseline levels. While not predominant, nudity remains common and Zipolite continues to be one of Mexico's only established and accepted nude beaches. Zipolite still retains its historical distrust for authority and live-and-let-live attitude, and continues to have an eclectic and liberal community. However, the reputation of being a scandalous, drug-infested, and dangerous community is often happily (and falsely) reinforced by hotels and businesses in neighboring towns desperate for a bigger slice of the Costa Chica's tiny tourist industry. Still a popular destination for backpackers, Zipolite caters to a younger crowd, including young couples and families, predominantly from Europe and Canada. It also a resting spot for many gay backpackers and tourists who enjoy its laid-back lifestyle. The beach is beautiful but dangerous for swimming, and once claimed as many as 40 lives a year, although since the establishment of a professionally trained and highly effective life guard program deaths are now infrequent. Nevertheless, extreme caution is advised when swimming; flags are routinely posted indicating when it is safe. thanks esso! the not so pretty side of the island, which is oddley enough very close to the best (non touristic) beaches and the very large national park. esso has a refinery here and this is what it looks like, but of course, it is located very far away from the hotel area. so the island is located near oil and refines oil, but people pay $3.60 USD a gallon for it... IGUANA This photo was taken in 2002 in aruba. It was taken with a canon film camera from a distance of about 5 ft. You will see these alot of places in aruba , but the best place is on the private island. The only way to get to the private island is by staying at the renassaince hotel. The decor, uniforms and entertainment reflect this theme, although the image has been toned down in recent years. Ouchy - Lausanne Ouchy is a commune, port, and popular lakeside resort near the city of Lausanne in Switzerland, located at the south of the city, at the edge of the Lake Leman (Lake Geneva). Very popular with tourists for the views of nearby France (Evian-les-Bains, Thonon), Ouchy is also a favourite area for rollerskating (Lausanne is considered a capital) and for skateboarding. Once a fishing Village, Ouchy was incorporated into the City of Lausanne in the mid-19th century to serve as a port on Lake Leman. The incredible views of the lake and the Alps, and the cooler air in summer have make Ouchy a popular place especially in the summer months. There is a major cluster of hotels and restaurants around the port. (source : Wikipedia) Lausanne Cathédrale Notre-Dame The Lausanne Cathedrale Notre-Dame towers over the hillside city and Lake Geneva. Theoretically there is still a night watch that calls out "all is well" on the hour every night, but we aren't sure if we heard him or not. Our concierge at the Hotel Crystal said sometimes the night watch doesn't happen if it's cold. Due to a funeral in the cathedral we weren't able to go inside and be tourists. DO NOT SMOKE IN BED It's been a long time, but I still have the scar to prove that messages inside matchbooks are genuine and sincere warnings that should be heeded. It all began when I met this beautiful blonde in the lounge. From the moment our eyes met, I sensed we had mutual interests, something to talk about, something to discuss. It turned out that her uncle sold advertising for matchbooks; it was her mention of matchbooks that reminded me of an old matchbook collection I had started when I was ten years old and lost interest in upon reaching adolescense. Her name was Mitzi and she was a brown-eyed blonde in a black velvet cocktail dress that was popular in the 60s. "So what did you do with it ?" she asked. Somewhat puzzled because the question seemed to come out of left field or the deep blue, though the lounge had no such field and was a deep pink like color of Flamingos. "Do with it?" I asked slowly, not wanting to appear I had missed something while I was gazing at the glittering heart on a small serpentine chain that dazzled like two-dozen half-karat diamonds each time she tossed her head of hair around. So appealing, so gorgeous, lovely, was it any wonder that I had lost my place in our conversation. I must have appeared out in left field, unable to answer such a simple question. Nevertheless, I was young, in my mid-twenties and she was probably in her mid thirties. (That would put her in her late 70s today, but I prefer not to go there.) Natalie Cole Performing At the Jewel Dunn's River In Ocho Rios, Jamaica This is a photograph that I took of the legendary Natalie Cole less than one hour ago giving an impromptu performance at the Jewel's Dunn River Hotel & Resort in the city of Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Ms. Cole & myself just so happened to be staying at the same hotel. The hotel had a New Year's event planned with an outdoor dinner and dancing. On our way downstairs, I looked directly to my left (about 3 or 4 feet away) and saw this tall lady who I thought bore a striking resemblance to Natalie Cole. I tapped my wife on her shoulder and said aloud, "That lady looks just like Natalie Cole...she could tell people that she's Natalie Cole." Just as soon as I said that, she looked over at me. After dinner, the host of the evening's events announced that they had a surprise performer and announced that it was Natalie Cole!! She walked up to the makeshift stage and sang "Unforgettable." I just happened to be right there with my camera in my hand! She looked so lovely and I never realized that she is such a tall lady! For those of you who don't know who Natalie Cole is, she is the daughter of the late, great Nat King Cole and has had a string of number one hits to her credit including "Pink Cadillac," "This Will Be An Everlasting Love," and, of course, the duet that she sang with her father, "Unforgettable." We were only about 5 minutes into the New Year when Ms. Cole sang! What a great way to start the New Year!! Some interesting things about it: - The salary is about $20,000 per year. - You must attach a copy of your birth certificate, you parents birth certificates as well as a passport like photo and copies of any and all degrees cited in your cv. - The application is submitted signed, and notarized. - Once selected, you cannot turn the job down - You are committed to the job for a 3 year contract. This is in line with all of the people I have talked too. For example, a recent MBA graduate who works as a receptionist at a hotel.... There is the perception of credentials here, but not on results when it comes to job descriptions and work in general. When I spoke about an alternate view to someone the other day, they were totally flabbergasted and amazed that you could achieve success in spite of not having credentials.
