Canon Canonet QL17-GIII This was a real deal - found at a local antique shop for $15 in absolutely pristine condition except for the seals. I spent another $12 to redo them and did a viewfinder cleaning on my own at the same time. Such a score - for $27 invested I got myself one of the best vintage compact 35mm rangefinders ever made. Too bad the case was a disaster, but it sacrificed itself to keep the camera near mint, so no complaints. Production ran 1972-1982 and well over a million were made in that time. GF1 with Canon 55mm F1.2 FL lens This old Canon FL lens still deliver the best image when mount on my GF1 camera. Great deal for $130 + $42 for an adapter. Very good for a fast lens at a low price. I was thinking of Voighlander 50mm F1.1 for Leica M mount but not for now. camera body It is a quarter plate (3.25in x 4.25 in) field camera made by J.T. Chapman of Manchester, mahogany with brass trim and fastenings. It has rack and pinion focussing. The model is called the "British". The camera lens moves back and forwards to adjust the focus of the lens which, when it is collapsed back into the body of the camera and the lens unscrewed, means the camera can fold right down into a box shape. Unfortunately, the bellows are slightly damaged, and the brass lens needs to be unstuck somehow before we can get it to fold down completely. I think it may be possible to use it still, I would certainly like to try at any rate. But I will have to learn much more about these cameras before I can attempt it! It is requried to lock-up the mirror before putting on the 21mm wide-angle lens, as the rear elements extend deep into the body. An auxilliary viewfinder was provided with that lens. On the topic of lenses, it is interesting to note that the front element on the 55mm f/2 lens is significantly larger than that of a 50mm f/1.8 lens, even tho mathematically they can be nearly identical in size. I'm really into Ansel Adams, I'm taking a deep look on his trilogy (The Camera, The Negative and The Print). I'm trying to learn using Capture One by Phase One, I realized it's probably the best raw processor out there. Details - CANON 400d, EF-S 10-22 @ 10mm, f/8, 41s, ISO 100. - B+W ND 110 (10 stops ND filter) - Tripod The shot Shot in Levanto, a few minutes before sunset. The Processing Capture One - Recovered some highlights and shadows Photoshop: - Converted to black and white using a Silver EFEX Pro - Created 7 Overlay layers to adjust light (in total, created while going through the other steps) - Multiplied the sky - Added two curve layers to lighten up the left part - Improved microcontrast with Unsharp Mask - Corrected perspective on the house on the left using the free transform tool - Used the lens distortion tool to straighten and level the horizon - Resized - Sharpened (SS + More Accurate, rocks and mountain only) - Framing and signature. Noise-wise, Aperture has done a fair bit "behind the scenes" to reduce noise (converting the RAW with Photoshop shows more work to be done than is obvious here. I tried to correct for the lens distortion but Adobe doesn't seem to have an APS-C correction profile for the 17-40. I will probably end up downloading their Profile Creation Tool and doing that so that I can correct these photos. This also looks a little weird to my eye because of the perspective -- the lines are a bit weird. I tried to fix it in photoshop with simple quadrilateral transforms, but that made the lens distortions more obvious. After I correct lens disortion, I'll be able to fix small perspective issues like that. The photo was also a bit tilted, so I had to straighten it... which I did along the lines on the top and bottom of Luna Park Cafe. I think it might be better if I did it along the central horizontal window edge. If we weren't leaving for Hawaii this afternoon, I would remove all the extra lights along the edges to more properly frame the subject. This picture itself is not really anything fancy, but the fact that I can take it at all is a revelation. I'm pretty sure I was on spot metering for ISO with manual aperture and shutter speed settings. 05/16/09: Worst Digital Camera Ever In a moment of pure, impulsive stupidity I picked up a $25 underwater digital camera. Basically it's a cheap digital camera stuffed into a plastic underwater case. The case is great. The camera is not. It can't even take a focused photo outside of the waterproof case in direct light. Bask in its 640x480 glory. It doesn't even function as a camera at all! My 21st Bday Party Taken in a smokey wood panelled upstairs hired room, with moody lighting. Well this was a bugger to get right as it was originally taken on my Ziess Symbolica 35mm camera (not SLR) on the evening in question, taken by my school mate who was s’posed to be into photography but only 2 shots of the party were even remotely viewable. I scanned the neg and it was dark, gritty, badly photographed in terms of F stop and speed, it was a disaster. But I have done the best I could do, I did a version in B&W but this is the colour one and I had to work on it. The whole shot was very red and over saturated I spent a while on it – binning it many times as a lost cause, but I really wanted to get it sort of “OK” MY 21st B’DAY It was a weird one, the room was hired in Leicester in a working mens club off Hinckley Road. I was very very fussy about some idiots at that time doing the “disco” for me, so….I did the music myself. I took a mixture of some of my own gear and I borrowed some Hi-Fi from the shop I worked at for over 15 years, an esoteric audio supplier in the centre of Leicester called Alpha Audio. Yes that is me with the cans around my neck, Howland West Waferlites actually for the nerds. At the far left seated we have, Michelle, my girlfriend at the time in pink trousers. Then moving inward, she sits with her family, including sister Julie and her big chap boyfriend soon to be hubby, Tom Ward! Opposite Tom & Julie we have the mum and little bro’ complete with the very fashionable at the time -Harrington Jacket emblazoned with him name “Steven” on the back in flock letters!!!! Carrying along to the end we see my cousin Pete and his lady. In the middle waving to the camera is my very good pal from school Evan Thomas, a great Welsh name if I ever heard one, just that he was from the West Indies!! Sat along side him is Evan’s mate John Ferana. I like the AA batteries because you can pick them up at the shop if you run out. But with the Li-Ion ones, you have to go home and recharge. I was after a Panasonic Lumix FZ-50 for a long time. I liked the SLR style and zoom ring. After using a friends, i decided it was a little too expensive and bulky. I then found out about the Finepix S8000. I was attracted to the 18 X optical zoom. Having owned a Finepix before, i know that these cameras have reasonable picture quality. I fumbled through a few p&s cameras, even passing up on a Yashica T4 Super for $12 as I already have one. I was about to leave when I saw a zoom lens behind the counter. It looked to be very clean and the price was good ($15). The only issue was it was a Olympus mount and I didn't own a Olympus SLR. Then I noticed a large plastic bag behind the counter and inside was a camera. I asked to take a look and found inside the bag an OM-1 w/ a 50mm 1.4 Zuiko lens, a Makinon 28mm 2.8 lens, a massive Vivitar 283 flash, a groovy camera strap and a few odds and ends.
