  • San Francesco is a church in Lodi, Lombardy, northern Italy, dating to the late 13th century. Its main peculiarity are the two "open sky" double mullioned windows in the facade, which are the first example of a model often repeated in northern Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries.

San Miniato from the Barbarossa Tower

San Miniato from the Barbarossa Tower

History

In medieval times, San Miniato was on the via Francigena, which was the main connecting route between northern Europe and Rome. It also sits at the intersection of the Florence-Pisa and the Lucca-Siena roads. Over the centuries San Miniato was therefore exposed to a constant flow of friendly and hostile armies, traders in all manner of goods and services, and other travelers from near and far.

Archaeological evidence indicates that the site of the city and surrounding area has been settled since at least the paleolithic era. It would have been well-known to the Etruscans, and certainly to the Romans, for whom it was a military post called "Quarto".

The first mention in historical documents is of a small village organized around a chapel dedicated to San Miniato built by the Lombards in 783. By the end of the 10th century San Miniato boasted a sizeable population enclosed behind a moat and protected by a castle built by Otto I, from which an Imperial Vicar ruled all of Tuscany.

The first walls, with defensive towers, were thrown up in the 12th century during the time that Italy was dominated by Frederick Barbarossa. Under his grandson, Frederick II, the town was further fortified with expanded walls and other defensive works, including the Rocca and its tower.

During the latter years of the 13th century and the entire 14th century, San Miniato was drawn into the ongoing conflict between the Ghibelline and Guelph forces. Initially Ghibelline, it had become a Guelph city by 1291, allied with Florence and, in 1307, fought with other members of the Guelph league against the Ghibelline Arezzo.

By 1347 San Miniato was under Florentine control, where it remained, but for a brief period from 1367-1370 when, instigated by Pisa, it rebelled against Florence, and for another brief period between 1777 and 1779 during the Napoleonic conquest. It was still part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany when the Duchy was absorbed into the newly-formed Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
[edit] Main sights

The city is enclosed within a well-preserved medieval precinct. Main landmarks include:

* The Tower of Frederick, built by Frederick II in the 13th century on the summit of the hill at an altitude of 192 meters, overlooking the entire Valdarno. Here was imprisoned Frederick's chanchellor Pier delle Vigne until his death. During World War II it was destroyed by the German Army to prevent the Allies from using it as a gun sighting tower, but was reconstructed in 1958.
* The Duomo (Cathedral), dedicated to both Sant'Assunta and Santo Genesio or Saint Genesius of Rome. It was originally a Romanesque building, but it has been remodelled several times and exhibits Gothic and some Renaissance arcchitectural elements. The facade incorporates a number of colorful majolica bowls. The interior has Latin cross plan with a central nave with two side aisles. The cathedral's campanile, a fortification annexed in is called the Matilde Tower and features an asymmetrical clock.
* The Diocesan Museum, next to the cathedral. This museum-gallery contains works by Filippo Lippi, Empoli, Neri di Bicci, Fra Bartolomeo, Frederico Cardi (known as Cigoli) and Verrocchio.
* Palazzo dei Vicari, built by Emperor Otto IV during the 12th century, the palazzo incorporates one of the oldest known crenellated turrets. The interior has a number of interesting frescoes. It is now an hotel.
* Palazzo Comunale. This 14th century building is still San Miniato's Town Hall. Its great hall was decorated by Cenno di Francesco Cenni. It also features a small oratory, containing a 16th century altarpiece.
* The church of San Francesco. Originally built in the early 13th century with a Romanesque facade, its interior features Gothic style chapels and frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
* The church of San Domenico was originally constructed in the 14th century, but has an incomplete facade. Its interior contains terracotta works by Luca della Robbia, a fresco attributed to Masolino da Panicale and a burial monument sculpted by Donatello. Next to the facade begins the Via Angelica, a tunnel that connected the countryside to the city.
* Convent of San Francesco. Purportedly founded by Saint Francis of Assisi himself in 1211 when he visited the city, the Convent stands behind the city higher up on the hill.

Other buildings and monuments worth seeing include the Bishop's Sanctuary, with a Baroque facade in the design of an amphitheater, designed by Cigoli and the Sanctuary of the Crucifix, recently restored, the desanctified Chiesa di San Martino, which has done duty as a convent, and then a prison, but which will now be used for conventions.

There are also a number of Renaissance palazzi, built by such aristocratic families as the Roffia, Grifoni, Formichini and the Bonapartes, ancestors of Napoleon.

SUITE HOROVITZ” IN SCENA VENERDI', SABATO E DOMENICA presso il San Luca Hotel

SUITE HOROVITZ” IN SCENA VENERDI', SABATO E DOMENICA presso il San Luca Hotel

Ci siamo.

PIER APPROACH FROM THE PIER. BOURNEMOUTH. AUGUST 2008

PIER APPROACH FROM THE PIER. BOURNEMOUTH. AUGUST 2008

The eastern side of Pier Approach as seen from the pier.

Where once stood the original single storey baths structure [ 1838 - 1864 ], now stands the much maligned Waterfront [ Imax ] building that opened in 1999, albeit without it's flagship tenant, the opening of the Imax Cinema being delayed until 2002.
The site was also occupied by the Sydenham's / replacement baths building [ 1865 - 1934 ], and the Pier Approach Baths [ 1937 - 1984 ], which were demolished in 1986.

On the far left you can just see St Peter's Church. Work began on it's construction in 1841 and continued in stages over the following 40 years. The spire was added in 1879.

Also on the left is the Pavilion that opened in 1929. The Belle Vue Boarding House / Hotel stood facing Pier Approach at this point from 1839 until 1928.

Working our way along the top, the light coloured building in the centre is the Premier Inn on Westover Rd. It has had quite a few name changes since it was built in the early 1930s, but is probably best remembered as the Palace Court Hotel, and for it's connections to The Beatles. The group stayed there in 1963 when Beatlemania was at its peak. They appeared at the Gaumont Theatre next door, and the photo for the cover of their next LP, With The Beatles, was taken in the hotel.

The brown and grey building directly to the right of the hotel is the Y.M.C.A, behind which, can be seen the left hand block of Bath Hill Court, with the right hand block the clearly visible white building to the right. The Bath Hill Court flats were built on the site of St Peters Church vicarage and grounds in the 1930s, the vicarage [ parsonage ] was built in 1847.

Next on the right, the Royal Bath Hotel is poking it's head above the greenery. Opened in 1838 as the Bath Hotel, it was part of the initial phase of the Sir George Gervis "Marine Village of Bourne", along with the Belle Vue mentioned earlier, and the Westover Villas.

The tower block on the right is Forest House on the corner of Bath Rd and Russell Cotes Rd. It replaced the original detached Forest House that was built in the 1850s.

And finally, coming down to the lower buildings, the colonnade shelters were built in 1907 as part of the Undercliff Drive scheme. Today the Undercliff Drive connects Bournemouth Pier Approach to Boscombe Pier Approach although motor vehicles can only enter from the Boscombe end and it is gated off close to the Bournemouth Pier end. It is used as a car park, although pedestrians and cyclists can use it as a through route.
The first section was opened with great ceremony by the great and the good of the town in 1907. It had been a hard won victory by those that supported the scheme and i think we can, over a century later, pronounce it an undoubted success. Well done.
When it opened it only ran up in line with Meyrick Rd, which is about a quarter of the way to Boscombe and the cliff lift opened at this point in 1908. The rest through to Boscombe was completed in 1914.

The East Beach Cafe became a Harry Ramsden's in the 1990s.

BOURNE AVENUE FROM THE CENTRAL PLEASURE GARDENS. BOURNEMOUTH. DORSET. 1875

BOURNE AVENUE FROM THE CENTRAL PLEASURE GARDENS. BOURNEMOUTH. DORSET. 1875

A villa called The Glen, a boarding house, was demolished in 1881 to make way for the construction of the Mont Dore Hotel that opened in 1885.
The foundation stone was laid by His Majesty King Oscar the 2nd of Sweden and Norway.

The establishment was one of a number of 'hydropathic hotels' that sprang up in town.

This from an 1885 guide.........
" It consists of two departments under one roof.
1st - The extensive establishment supplied with Mont Dore water imported from France, and superintended by Dr Emond, from Mont Dore Auvergne - comrising hot and temperate baths, vapour douches and baths, inhilation halls of spray and vapour, nasal and throat irrigations etc.
Also hot and cold plunge, douche, needle, pine, electric and other baths, and a luxuriousTurkish bath, all supplied with sea water.
2nd - A high class pension of 120 bed and sitting rooms, general dining, drawing, reading, billiard and smoking rooms. Music and ball room 70ft by 25ft and 20ft high...."

This from an 1888 town guide........
"The hotel, which is by far the finest building in Bournemouth, is in the Italian style of architecture, and contains every modern improvement and convenience which can contributeto the handsomeness of the house and to the health and comfort of its visitors.
It is five storeys high, and comprises excellent bedrooms and private sitting rooms, lofty and well ventilated, together with public rooms of all kinds, including a grand dining hall, and ladies' drawing room, a most charming apartment furnished with great elegance, and having large bay windowsaffording views of the Gardens and Public Pleasure Grounds.
A reading room contains a plentiful supply of the best periodical literature, and there is an exceedingly fine billiard room, containing two magnificent table.
It is fitted with passenger lifts, radiators, and all modern appliances, and every attention has been paid to the sanitary arrangements, lighting, warming and ventilation.
Since the opening of the hotel, a model laundry and a number of large bedrooms have been aded, and the directors have under contemplation further additions, alterations and improvements, including a Winter Garden.
The gardens, well treed with pines, are picturesquely laid out, and afford sheltered nooks in various directions.
The hotel communicates by a glass corridor with the bathing establishment, which is one of the most complete in England, if not in Europe, having been constructed after the model of the famous Auvergne Baths..."

It stands on the corner of Bourne Avenue and Braidley Rd with further access via St Stephen's Rd.
It was used as a military hospital during WW1 before becoming Bournemouth's present town hall in 1921.

George M. Pullman: Palace Car Magnate

George M. Pullman: Palace Car Magnate

Executive jets and yachts are the quintessential tableau of today's tycoons. A century or more ago it was Pullman Palace Cars and yachts. The Palace Cars were ornate, featured extravagant pomp, from crystal chandeliers and marble baths to sumptuous bedrooms, libraries and living rooms walled in mahogany, with servant quarters nearby. The man who made this possible, George Pullman, catered to the wealthy, provided unique cars built to individual tastes and standards, but also gave ordinary railroad travelers Pullman cars where passengers could sleep in berths on longer journeys. Pullman also developed Pullman City south of Chicago, designed to become the utopian factory city for his employees and executives. Undated. None of the men depicted here were kind enough to show their shoulder straps, so their regiment remains unknown, but still plenty to look at.

Seasoned fighters to a man, the infantrymen appear to be taking a breather from the front at "Villa Frieda". They all wear M1910 tunics and all are armed with a Gew 98, although a variety of bayonets are on display.

Interesting to note the photograph appears to have been developed in reverse, deliberate or just a mistake?

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is a national park in the southern Sierra Nevada, southeast of Fresno, California in the United States of America. The park was the third National Park to be formed in the USA, in 1890 (the first being Yellowstone National Park in Wy., the second being the now-decommissioned Mackinac National Park in Mi.). The park spans 404,051 acres (1,635 km?). Encompassing a vertical relief of nearly 13,000 feet (3,962.4 meters), the park contains among its natural resources the highest point in the contiguous 48 United States, Mount Whitney, at 14,505 feet (4,421.1 meters) above sea level. The park is adjacent to Kings Canyon National Park; the two are administered by the National Park Service as one unit, called Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

The park is most famous for its Giant Sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, the largest tree on Earth. The General Sherman tree grows in the Giant Forest, which contains five out of the 10 largest trees in the world, in terms of wood volume. The Giant Forest is connected by the park's Generals Highway to Kings Canyon National Park's Grant Grove, home to the General Grant tree among other sequoias.

Front country

Many park visitors enter the park through its southern entrance near the town of Three Rivers at Ash Mountain at 1700 ft (518 m) elevation. The lower elevations around Ash Mountain contain the only National Park Service-protected California Foothills ecosystem, consisting of blue oak woodlands, foothills chapparal, grasslands, yucca plants, and steep, mild river valleys. The foothills region is also home to abundant wildlife: bobcats, foxes, ground squirrels, rattlesnakes, and mule deer are commonly seen in this area, and much more rarely, reclusive mountain lions are seen as well.

Moving up in the park, we reach an elevation where winter snowfalls determine which plants survive. Here we find the montane forest-dominated coniferous belt, between approx. 5,500 and 9,000 ft (1,676.4 and 2 743.2 m) in elevation. Found here are Ponderosa, Jeffrey, Sugar, and Lodgepole pine trees, as well as abundant white and red fir. Found here too are the mighty Sequoia trees, the most massive living trees on earth. Between the trees, spring and summer snowmelts sometimes fan out to form lush, though delicate, meadows. In this region, visitors often see mule deer, Douglas squirrel, and American black bears, who have been known to break into unattended cars to steal food left by careless visitors.

Back country

The vast majority of the park is roadless wilderness; in fact, to the surprise of many visitors, no road crosses the Sierra Nevada within the park's boundaries. This leaves over 84% of the park's area as designated wilderness], accessible only by foot or by horse.

Sequoia's backcountry offers a vast expanse of high-alpine wonders. Covering the highest-elevation region of the High Sierra, the backcountry includes Mount Whitney on the eastern border of the park, accessible from the Giant Forest via the High Sierra Trail. On a traveler's path along this 35 mi/56 km backcountry trail, one passes through about 10 miles/16km of montane forest before reaching the backcountry resort of Bearpaw Meadow, just short of the Great Western Divide. Bearpaw Meadow offers rustic tent cabins and gourmet meals cooked by a seasonal resident park crew.

Continuing along the High Sierra Trail over the Great Western Divide via Kaweah Gap, one passes from the Kaweah River Drainage, with its characteristic V-shaped river valleys, and into the Kern River drainage, where an ancient fault line has aided glaciers in the last ice age to create a U-shaped canyon that is almost perfectly straight for nearly 20 miles (32km). On the floor of this canyon, at least 2 days' hike from the nearest road, is the Kern Canyon hot spring, a popular resting point for weary backpackers. From the floor of Kern Canyon, the trail ascends again over 8000 ft (2 438 m) to the summit of Mount Whitney.

At Mount Whitney, the High Sierra Trail meets with the John Muir Trail and the epic Pacific Crest Trail, which continue northward along the Sierra crest and into the backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park.

Human History

The area which now comprises Sequoia National Park was first home to Monachee (or Western Mono) Native Americans, who resided mainly in the Kaweah River drainage in the Foothills region of the park, though evidence of seasonal habitation exists even as high as the Giant Forest. In the summertime, Native Americans would travel over the high mountain passes to trade with tribes to the East. To this day, pictographs can be found at several sites within the park, notably at Hospital Rock and Potwisha, as well as bedrock mortars used to process acorns, a staple food for the Monachee people.

By the time the first European settlers arrived in the area, smallpox had already spread to the region, decimating Native American populations. The first Euro

Arches National Park

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is a U.S. national park in eastern Utah. It is known for preserving over 2000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations.

The park is located near Moab, Utah, and is 119 square miles (310 km2) in size. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Since 1970, forty-three arches have toppled because of erosion. The park receives 10 inches (250 mm) of rain a year on average.

The area, administered by the National Park Service, was originally designated as a national monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated a national park on November 12, 1971.

Dylan Apartments Kensington

Dylan Apartments Kensington

Last week I was in London and had booked via you website. I travelled together with my colleges and we were a group of 5 people. We were very disappointed and upset. Our experiences were really bad and if you don't believe to my words then look at my pictures. This is the worst place I ever have passed the night. Also I have been several times to London before.

Here is my report about what happened there last week:

We arrived on Wednesday 3rd August at 23:30 Dylan Kensington 109 Apartments because of our late arrival in Stansted Airport. We informed about this late arrival by e-mail a few day before! There was nobody at the reception! And we were confronted with closed doors.

After a while we understood that we have to ring one of the telephone numbers, which were written on a paper. After a while (about 60 minutes after our arrival) a man came and opened the reception. He said he is not a member of the staff but he works for Dylan Kensington in night.

For this service we had to pay a penalty of 50 Pound! And we would have to pay the whole price for our 2 days in advance. So far so good. But it was not allowed to him to show us the rooms before paying. A typical trap! Because in this situation we had no choice of course! We had to pay. Then we got the keys. But while paying I have seen the next shock: I had to pay a penalty of 5% of the whole amount because I paid with Mastercard. I cannot understand why! I have never paid such a penalty before! Do you understand such a behaviour? Is this possible by law, why and by which law?

After getting the keys we went to the rooms but our rooms were situated in different buildings in opposite across the road!!!

Our keys did not work to open the house entry this night but fortunately we could open the doors to our rooms at least. Next morning we could obtain correction of these defects!

After entering the rooms we must see that the rooms are very tiny, much smaller then on the pictures. No place for the our luggage, no cupboard! And the situation of the furniture was really frustrating too. You will see on the pictures and understand!

The location is near by the underground that is correct. But the hotel itself is situated at Warwick Road, which means a 3 lane main road with a lot of traffic all over the night. And there must be a hospital nearby because all the day and night long the diaphones of passing ambulances sounded!

We discovered that a couple of pretty hotels are in that area in side streets in the neighbourhood. It's a pity but too late now!

I hope my lines to you help at least to avoid more frustrated clients of you caused by that tricksters!

Renaissance St Pancras Hotel London

Renaissance St Pancras Hotel London

he Renaissance St Pancras Hotel is located adjoining St Pancras station (Eurostar and High Speed 1 terminus) and on the north east corner of central London. While this area is a little way from the main tourist areas and the surrounding vicinity somewhat downbeat compared to the more glamorous places the station itself provides some ultra modern facilities. These include the longest Champagne bar in Europe at 90 meters long. There are several restaurants and bars including burger bars, bakery, Brasserie, wine bar and a Gastro pub. For a quick bite many big name coffee shops/Cafes are located within the station. Shopping is also well catered for with an arcade and other shopping areas as well as its own market. This location does suit business travellers looking to have good access to the City of London which is a short taxi ride away or 7 minutes by train from the adjacent from Kings Cross station. The popular shopping area of Islington High Street is less than a mile to the east by lacks the glamour of the more central shopping areas such as Knightsbridge (2.4 miles) and South Kensington (3.2 miles). A mile to the north is the shopping High Street of Camden which includes an always busy market selling a range of items including trend setting fashions. The nearest tourist area for nightlife would be Covent Garden which is just over 1 mile to the south. Some other local places of interest include the British Library (opposite), Petrie Egyptian Archaeology Museum (0.5 miles) and Dickens House (0.6 miles). The large open Space of Regents Park is less than a mile along the Marylebone Road and is home to London Zoo.

Canero (Asturias). Playa de Cueva

Canero (Asturias).

My Completed Scorecard for the Caneros De Los Mochis in their Game Against the Mexicali Aguilas at Estadio Casas GEO, Mexicali, MX, December 17, 2010

My completed scorecard for the visiting Caneros De Los Mochis (Los Mochis Sugar Cane Growers) in their game against the Mexicali Acguilas (Eagles) at Estadio Casas GEO, Mexicali, MX, 12/17/10. It took me an inning to get up to speed with the players, so I had an extra incorrect player in the lineup that I just crossed out instead of trying to retroactively correct.

The Aguilas won, 6-5.
