Composer Day 2

Composer Day 2

So, I arrived at my hotel in San Francisco today. After having a tasty dinner of sushi, I headed back to my room and set up my Canon on a tripod. I wanted to try my Lensbaby Composer in a low-light situation, knowing that having the camera on the tripod would give me great shots. So, I took this one, but forgot that the camera was still set to take B&W. Well... what the heck, I think it looks cool the way it is. I will post some other color shots in a moment. If only you all could see the smile on my face! This is going to be a great week!

Experience Jazz brings 25 young musicians to Ascona

For the first time JazzAscona presents a project that will involve 25 young musicians from Swiss jazz schools, offering them the opportunity to participate in concerts and workshops from June 25 to July 2.

Split into five different bands, the young musicians will daily perform in concerts, in different contexts and situations, in order to stimulate their versatility.

Experience Jazz is promoted by Nicolas Gilliet, JazzAscona’s artistic director, in collaboration with George Robert, musician and director Department of Jazz at the Lausanne Conservatory. The project wants to bring young musicians closer to traditional jazz, by filling a gap that can be observed in jazz schools, which tend to forget the tradition’s practical application. Experience Jazz aims at being an occasion of artistic growth, one in which these young musicians can confront themselves both with a style that might not be part of their daily musical repertoire and with a specific audience such as that of JazzAscona.

A jury will confer a distinction to the best band, on the basis of musical quality, concept, flexibility, chemistry among the band members, and feeling for the audience.

Participating bands:

ZELAO (Lausanne HEMU Jazz Department)
Marie-Charlotte JAHN, flute / Joanne GAILLARD, vocals / Simon BLANC, guitar / Jacques BEAUD, electric bass / Axel VUILLE, drums/percussion

SAX THING (Lausanne HEMU Jazz Department)

Bengi Jumping

Bengi Jumping

Bengi (aka Daniele Benati) has been the lead singer and guitarist for Italian pop band Ridillo for the past 16 years, but in the last couple of years he's also been busy producing and composing TV themes for Rai, Mediaset and Sky. He's worked with top Italian artists like Feelgood Production, Montefiori Cocktail and Robert Passera. 'Charme and Shake' is Bengi's first solo album, a fine example of classic Italian Cocktail Lounge music, but with a fresh touch of breakbeat flavour. As the title sests the album has 2 sides: a Charme one, influenced by the polished world of classy lounge music and international easy listening, and a Shake one, that draws the energy from from 60's Beat, powered by a more contemporary breakbeat groove. On 'Charme and Shake' Bengi shares lead vocals with sensual Thai singer May, who already released her own album and plays keys in Bengi's live set. On stage Bengi is joined by his fellow Ridillo member Claudio Zanoni on trumpet, who has just released The Shiffers debut album on La Douce too.

Arturo Sandoval VMF 2011

Arturo Sandoval VMF 2011

Arturo Sandoval's Jazz Big Band kicked off the VMF's 2011 concert season. The very enjoyable concert was well-attended with some 600 people in one of the big halls at the Ventura Fairgrounds, Saturday night 02.13.11.

He's a 5-time Grammy winner, and when you see him on stage, it's easy to undersand why. He's phenomenal musician, and a great bandleader. He played trumpet, flugelhorn, piano, timbales, and sang, but my favorite piece was when he scatted How High the Moon, doing solos on various instruments while air-playing them. Killer!

[I'll post more concert photos soon...I shot a bunch.]

In the not long passed past most fiddlers were males. Today, it is safe to say there is gender balance in traditional fiddling, and women are great players!

Daily Shoot January 10: Rhythm

I had an idea for this shot and I have been playing around for quite some time now trying to get the idea the way I see it in my mind. While this is close, it isn't exactly it. I have been having lighting issues as well as just not being able to get what I want to come across. So, while the initial idea started off with the urban dictionary's definition of rhythm as being done on homemade instruments and I was going with the whole water glasses musical thing, this is what I ended up with.... I may revisit this later to try again to get what I really was aiming for. Or not. LOL!!

Breathing from a hole in my lung

But faces in front of me
Racing through the void in my head
To find traces of a good luck academy

Sparks ignite and trade them for thought
About no one
And nothing in particular
Washed the sickend socket in drove
Resent nothing
There’s good will inside of me

Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line

Lately I’m a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

Something I will never forget
I felt desp'rate
And stuck to the marrow
Invisible to everyone else
I'm a sex change
And a damsel with no heroine

I don't need no time to say
There's no changing yesterday
If we keep talking and I keep walking in straight lines

They're ready to take requests:-)

From left to right the members of the band are: Christopher (guitar), Richard (french horn), James (triangle), Michael (bass drum), Andrew (cymbals), Mathew (horn), Daniel (fiddle) David (flute) and John (the conductor). I did not make up these names---they were named by the manufacturer.

It was far more difficult to make this shot an interesting one with my wide angle lens and I'm missing the rich color I had on the "James" shot. I thought I might re-take tonight under the original conditions but alas, Mathew lost his horn when I turned him over to see his name (and I have no crazy glue to fix it back) so I'd be minus a player and that wouldn't do. Ah well we live and learn.

a gift from a thai pastor in the golden triangle. it's an unstrung 'sung' and is apparently unique to northern thailand. made from teak, it normally features two courses of 2 unitone strings, with each course tuned a full tone apart. (the higher strings are on the bottom as on a guitar - at least the only one i've played was tuned to e and d.) makes for a kind of minor and mournful sound. i hope this is the year i actually get this old baby up and running. i saw one with a pickup installed, and they can be plucked or bowed. maybe the next big thing eh? `~)

"Los Cenzontles (Nahuatl for "The Mockingbirds") dig deep into Latino traditions to promote dignity, pride and cultural understanding. The group has pioneered revivals of Mexican roots music in California bringing traditions to new generations. The Mockingbirds now create a powerful new hybrid sound – creating a fresh Chicano voice for a new generation."

"Fronting the group is the dynamic vocal dueto of Fabiola Trujillo and Lucina Rodriguez and sonero Hugo Arroyo . The Mockingbirds effortlessly mix electric bass and drums with traditional Mexican instruments – jarana, vihuela, requinto, pandero and quijada (jawbone) – creating a powerful contemporary sound infused with the gutsy soul of Mexico’s rural roots music."

"The group's core members also operate Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. The Center has been training area youth in traditional Mexican music, dance, and crafts since 1994."

a flavorful, festive blend of musical worlds.’ (Wild Applause) Joel Selvin, SF Chronicle

‘a wonderful new collaboration with … traditionally minded Mexican-American folk music spiked with Lobos' adventurous brand of modern rock.’ Mikael Wood, LA Weekly

‘…an album that seamlessly incorporates rock and blues elements into traditional Mexican forms, smacking of neither academia nor compromise. Beautiful stuff. Dan Forte, Vintage Guitar

‘… a rich blend of folk music and searing blues guitar. Occasional detours into imporvisational jam-band fare exhibit the group’s ability to deliver the expected and the unexpected with equal grace.’ Nate Seltenrich, East Bay Express

‘David Hidalgo has been finding the common thread between Buddy Holly and traditional Mexican music since the early days of Los Lobos, and he demonstrates that knack again on this new collaboration.’ Jim Abbott, Orlando Sentinel Pop Music Critic

‘One of the most interesting albums of the year… bringing the term ‘fusion’ to new heights.’ Jesus ‘El Pelos’ Olvera, Al Borde

‘Like East LA lions Los Lobos, Los Cenzontles, aka the Mockingbirds, is a community-supported (and supporting) band that remains deeply bonded to folk roots while incorporating other styles and genres - rock, blues, jazz, roadhouse boogie -into its music. The good news for Los Cenzontles is that they’re living up to the expectations created by Hidalgo’s and (Linda) Ronstadt’s involvement.’ Pasadena Weekly

Two performances: 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. • Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 • $15 • Bilingual
Correo Aereo (“air mail”) are Austin Music Award-winners now based in Seattle. The Latin American/world music trio performs traditional and original music from Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico and beyond, combining a stunning array of string and percussive instruments with silken vocal harmonies described as “locked in carnal embrace” by the Austin Chronicle. Hailed for exciting musical virtuosity and profoundly moving performances through unknown landscapes of Latin America, their sensual music is both viscerally ancient and vibrantly contemporary. Abel Rocha plays Venezuelan and Mexican harp, guitar, cuatro, quinta huapanguera and vocals. Madeleine Sosin offers violins, maracas, bombo, jarana, quijada and vocals. They are joined by Amy Denio, (Kulture Shock & The Tiptons), on accordion, clarinet and vocals. Their music is richly polyrhythmic and soulfully melodic – soaring, fiery, haunting and joyful … this is the universal language.

Dirty Dozen - the Man with the Huge Sax.

Roger Lewis, baritone saxophone player for the Dirty Dozen from New Orleans, relaxing before the set. The Dirty Dozen were playing with Terrance Simien and his band, as part of the Sydney Festival.

I haven't been so excited about a band coming to Sydney for years. If you don't know the Dirty Dozen, or Terrance Simien, check 'em out. No regrets (except ... maybe "My Sweet Lord," Terrance. Sorry.)

(Only, I ended up with less than four hours' sleep last night, and I have to leave for work in 20 minutes. Oops!)

Live the band is augmented with horns and a keyboard/sound player. I was especially surprised by the baritone saxophone, as you don't see those that often at rock concerts. They were a great addition to the basic rock sound.
