Mandolin Workshop. Hm...

Mandolin Workshop. Hm...

The mandolin workshop. Well, it started out OK: the guy said, "Um. I've never done this, um, whaddya you guys wanna do?" Then it went haywire from there. This was supposed to be "advanced" and we started out on Bill Cheatham, and one guy was playing it at a VERY rudimentary speed, going back to add in notes he'd missed--it was excruciating. We limped along for a couple minutes, then I tried to come in, and it got real ugly. God bless 'em--I had to bail.
I'm not super good AT ALL--but I did at least know the closed chords and we got enmired in this "OK, put your pinkie on the 7th fret, 3rd string. Now press down and strum."
I went back to jam with Jake.

Weymann Mandolute in case

My cheap 1920s-1930s Weymann mandolute in its softshell case outside on a porch table. This is actually my favorite mando. The neck is so tiny I can do a lot of chords that are otherwise a stretch on other mandos. The body surrounds the upper neck, making it difficult to reach up to hit high notes. The bridge has settled because of inadequate bracing, so this baby might not be long for this world.

Through The Eyes of a Child

Through The Eyes of a Child

EXPLORE #33 :)

Never underestimate the feelings of a child
Very small they may be but very sensitive inside

Too young you may think to understand
The complex way of life and what is going on around

But believe me when I say they understand much more
Than you could ever give them credit for

Every little detail is taken in and stored
Every little thing they see, hear and more

Small they might be but hearts so big
Sensitive to the way they are treated and live

Little people thats what they are
More intelligent than some adults by far

Not to be treated as if not in sight
Not to be ignored when you feel like

Listen to everything they want to say
There is a reason they are talking this way

Remember a child will often hide
The hurt and pain they maybe feeling inside

A child maybe very small
But their feeling and emotions are very tall

Harmonics

Harmonics

I do not even like this photo much, but i am posting it because of something a friend of mine reminded me of last night..

I stopped guitar lessons about 9 months ago, after learning for close to 2 years..
I loved my teacher. I still do. I miss him.

He's just this 30-something nerdy classical guitarist, who makes lame jokes, has funny thoughts and weird queries, my beloved teacher who gets so frustrated because my fingers are never bent at the right angle and i completely suck at harmonics.
He guided me through exam pieces and i'd always listen to him playing beautiful pieces on his guitar, before he starts our class. He often tells me how he came across his passion for music.
I still remember how awkward our first lesson was. No-- it had always been awkward and it still was, even til the very last lesson when i cried, telling him i was stopping but not feeling ready to let go of him yet.

I miss him so.

DNA test 002

DNA test 002

Test using an electric guitar to create generative art. There are six colors, one for each string, and the position of the bands represent the fret each note was played on. Since pitch detection is out of my range, I have to use a less accurate method. Thus, the results are more 'muddled' but at the same time more interesting visually.

My first official guitar lesson. Worked on learning CAGED chords and the pentatonic (not platonic, well I guess if you had to classify my relationship with it, it might be) scale. It hurts my fingers but I'm really getting a kick out of playing and practicing with my baby (Martin and Robert)

I am invariably late for appointments - sometimes as much as two hours. I've tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too strong, and too pleasing.

Swiftly in the nights,
In the porches of Key West,
Behind the bougainvilleas
After the guitar is asleep,
Lasciviously as the wind,
You come tormenting.

Fine Tune

Fine Tune

We can't go on playing good rhythms without tuning the instrument. You can't expect melodic sounds every time you play it. That's why we have to fine tune every string first, before playing the notes... Oftentimes, life maybe out of tune, but like a guitar, we can tune it to sound harmonious.

Small refaced house at 2911 James Cool Papa Bell in JeffVanderLou is interesting. Although the new window opening is a bit small, the brickwork is done well. There is even a recurring pattern in the bond.

    alto clarinet
  • The alto clarinet is a wind instrument of the clarinet family. It is a transposing instrument pitched in the key of E, though instruments in F (and in the 19th century, E) have been made. It is sometimes known as a tenor clarinet; this name especially is applied to the instrument in F.

Plays just fine and if you bring it to a rehearsal, all activity ceases until you explain that it's not a toy and not a soprano sax.

SOLOS FOR CLARINET. SOLOS FOR

Solos for clarinet. Saxophone dance song

Solos For Clarinet

solos for clarinet

    clarinet
  • (clarinetist) a musician who plays the clarinet

  • The clarinet is a musical instrument that is a part of the woodwind family. The name derives from adding the suffix -et (meaning little) to the Italian word clarino (meaning a type of trumpet), as the first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet.

  • An organ stop with a tone resembling that of a clarinet

  • a single-reed instrument with a straight tube

  • A woodwind instrument with a single-reed mouthpiece, a cylindrical tube of dark wood with a flared end, and holes stopped by keys. The most common forms are tuned in B flat, A, and E flat

    solos

  • A piece of vocal or instrumental music or a dance, or a part or passage in one, for one performer

  • An unaccompanied flight by a pilot in an aircraft

  • (solo) alone: without anybody else or anything else; "the child stayed home alone"; "the pillar stood alone, supporting nothing"; "he flew solo"

  • A thing done by one person unaccompanied, in particular

  • (solo) composed or performed by a single voice or instrument; "a passage for solo clarinet"

Two Long Dogs: Solo
I have had a lot of dogs in my life, can't seem to live without them, but Solo was perhaps the oddest: no wagging lap dog shit for him, he was fiercely independent and tolerated me as somehow being a marginal member of his pack. Mainly he wanted to be left alone and if he wanted affection or attention he insisted on it...when he had had enough, with equal insistence he demanded that he be left alone. His wolf heritage as a hunter never quite left him....he brought down a small deer here on the island, several cats and dogs down south, including Shadow (where the moniker Shadowplay actually came from, not from some lofty photographic conceit....I used to love watching Shadow Play....). Shadow had his own karmic debt burden when Solo killed him, having attacked several other dogs for no good reason: he was never right in the head no doubt due to the fact that when he arrived in our lives wandering down from the desert hills, he had a 45 calibre bullet lodged in his head...someone had tried to kill him but the bullet had metastasized into a lump on his head....Solo challenged Shadow from the time he was a ten week old puppy; no matter how we tried to make peace between them (including having both of them 'fixed')...they would leave each other alone for weeks and then one day Shadow, always Shadow, would challenge Solo again go another round. Shadow was a big dog at 100 pounds, sort of Belgian Shepherd but he always lost to Solo at 130 pounds: an ear ripped here, a six inch flap of skin ripped there....one day we came home after a long period of quiet between them and Solo had ripped his throat out....Solo died of natural causes three years ago.....despite his fierce nature, he had the most soulful 'human' eyes of any dog I have ever had....he knew too much, thought too much about the absurd relatonship between man and dog .

Fanciullo, io gia' non ero
come gli altri erano, ne' vedevo
come gli altri vedevano. Mai
-dai torrenti e dalle sorgenti
dalla rossa roccia dei monti
dal sole che d' intorno mi ruotava
nelle sue dorate tinte autunnali
dal celeste baleno
che daccano mi guizzava
dal tuono e dalla tempesta
e dalla nuvola che forma assumeva
(mentre era azzurro tutto l' altro cielo)-
d' un demone alla mia vista.

solo - edgar allan poe
