My working table

Internet connection is very expensive here $10.45 from noon to noon. For a luxury hotel like the Sheraton, they should offer the broadband or wireless for free. There are free wireless spots all over town and I also noticed some at the airport.

This is the table in the room where I am working on the computer, uploading the photos of the day and making the posts. I try to do it early in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon when it is too hot to go out or late in the evening, after dinner.

Internet Cafe

Chris uses the computer in the living room to IM with his girlfriend Hana back in Tokyo. The house's wireless broadband internet connection was spotty and went down twice during our stay, but nevertheless proved to be a boon for many folks who needed to check in with the office, google local stores, or even find out which mixers go best with vanilla vodka.

Thirty Years

A bit of a change from photos of France...

The reason for this photo is quite simple. This shows one of our Squeezeboxes playing a track called "Thirty Years" from the first album by (late 70's prog supergroup) UK. Which I bought thirty years ago today.

Even though I could never quite work out the lyrics (nor can any of the lyrics websites I've found), I've always found the song poignant from the fragments I could make out:

"All the things you planned
Just sand castles washed away
On tidal waves of tears,
fears overpowering..."

At the time, thirty years sounded like a huge gulf of time.

And it is. I remember buying this on cassette in 1978, and listening to it in my sister's car as we drove through Wales on holiday, using big clunky headphones attached to a big clunky not-very-portable tape deck. And now, here I am in 2008, listening to the track from a FLAC (lossless audio) copy stored on our hard drive, delivered to our hi-fi over our wireless network. The neighbours are out, so I cranked the volume way up. It sounds great! Indeed, I hear things I've never noticed before. Earlier in the day, I was playing it on the iPod in my car too. Back in '78, this stuff was beyond my wildest dreams!

But then, I didn't have a wife telling me to turn that damn prog rubbish down. You win some, ... :-)

Der Rechner lauft, man kommt ins Netzwerk, schreibt und empfangt E-Mails und geht ins Internet. Das ist fur die Mitarbeiter auf der drupa normal. Aber wer sorgt dafur, dass alles reibungslos funktioniert? Unsere IT@drupa: so nennt sich das Team von manroland. Dahinter verbergen sich aus Offenbach Willi Huneke, Leiter IT Infrastruktur und Holger Graulich, aus Augsburg kommt Claudio Schnell da Silva. Schon am 7. Mai begann das Team mit dem Aufbau der kompletten IT-Landschaft. Herzstuck ist das Basisnetzwerk, das die Maschinen miteinander vernetzt und fur die Grundvernetzung am Stand sorgt.

Imposante Zahlen: 3000 Meter Netzwerkkabel, 34 Switche, 150 PCs und Laptops, vier Wireless LANs. Sechs Server versorgen die Mitarbeiter auf der Messe. Mit einer 10 MB-Leitung gibt es eine Verbindung zum Stammhausnetzwerk. Fur Kunden und Mitarbeiter aus der Marktorganisation stehen mehrere DSL-Anschlusse und zwei Internetcafes mit 14 PCs zur Verfugung. IT-Leiter Huneke sagt: „Alles lauft reibungslos. Mein Team ist sehr zuverlassig und motiviert. Wir bieten schnellen Service und losen kleinere und gro?ere IT-Probleme sofort vor Ort. Manchmal hat ein Mitarbeiter nur sein Password vergessen.“

Am 11. Juni, dem letzten Messetag, werden die PCs abgebaut und in einem Container sicher verwahrt, bis ein Lastwagen nach zwei Tagen Abbau alles wieder zuruck nach Offenbach bringt.

The computer is running, you’re connected to the network, you’re sending and receiving e-mails, and you have access to the Internet. This is quite normal for our people at drupa. But who makes sure that it all works so smoothly? Our IT@drupa: that’s the name of the manroland team. It’s a team of three: from Offenbach there is Willi Huneke, head of IT Infrastructure, and Holger Graulich, and from Augsburg we have Claudio Schnell da Silva. The team started setting up the whole IT en-vironment quite some time ago, on May 7. It is centered around the basic network that links the computers to each other and provides the general networking ser-vices on the stand.

Impressive figures: 3,000 meters of network cables, 34 switches, 150 PCs and laptops, four wireless LANs. Six servers support our staff at the trade show. A 10 MB line provides a link to the headquarters network. Several DSL connections and two Internet cafes with 14 PCs are ready to be used by customers and staff from the Marketing Organization. IT head Huneke explains: “Everything is running smoothly. My team is very reliable and motivated. We offer quick service and solve minor IT problems and even more serious ones on the spot, straight away. Sometimes an employee has just forgotten his password.”

On June 11, the last day of the show, the PCs will be disconnected and stored in a container for safekeeping; then after two days of dismantling, a truck will bring everything back to Offenbach.

John Ellis - History of British Executioners

John Ellis - Period in office - 1901 - 1923

John Ellis (October 4 1874 – September 20 1932) Born in Rochdale, England, he took the responsibility of his position very seriously and hoped to "despatch" the condemned person with as little fuss and pain to the individual concerned. He was a very professional man. An insight into his behaviour and methods can be read in the book Diary of a Hangman in which he describes his methods and recalls the final moments of some of the people he executed, who included the poisoner Frederick Seddon in 1912.

Ellis committed suicide by cutting his throat in 1932. He was said by his friends to have been unable to recover from the ordeal of executing Edith Thompson, and that the Thompson execution had also precipitated his retirement.

John Ellis was the uncle of Canada's executioner Arthur English (aka Arthur Ellis).

Ellis was a notably mild mannered man who ultimately committed suicide possibly through the stresses incurred by his job as hangman and possibly through the effects of the slump on his business as a barber. He had a particular dislike of hanging women for reasons that will become apparent.

Ellis was a British executioner for 23 years at the beginning of the 20th century. He was a man who took the responsibility of his position very seriously and hoped to 'despatch' the condemned person with as little fuss and pain to the individual concerned. He was a very professional man. An insight into his behaviour and methods can be read in the book 'Diary of a hangman' which is a book where he describes his methods and some of the people he remembers executing and their final moments on earth.

He executed several famous criminals, notably: Herbert Rowse Armstrong who he hanged on the 31st of May 1922 at Gloucester prison for the murder, by arsenic poisoning, of his wife. There is some doubt now over Armstrong's guilt and new evidence has been unearthed by another, present day solicitor, who acquired Armstrong's practice in Hay on Wye and works in his old office and even bought his house.

Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen is perhaps the most famous criminal to come Ellis's way. He was hanged on the 23rd of November 1910 at Pentonville prison for the murder of his wife, Cora Crippen. Crippen was the first person to be caught by the use of the new wireless telegraph system allowing him to be arrested aboard the S. S. Montrose on which he had sailed to Quebec in Canada with his lover Ethel Le Neve. At the time it was seen as the 'Crime of the Century' and has held a fascination for many ever since.

George Smith was the famous 'Brides in the Bath' murderer whom Ellis hanged on the 13th of August 1915 at Maidstone prison. Smith had married and then drowned Alice Burnham, Beatrice Constance, Annie Mundy and Margaret Elizabeth Lofty for financial gain, via their life insurance policies and wills.

Sir Roger Casement was unusual in that he had been convicted of treason, having tried to get the Germans to send arms and equipment to Ireland to start the 1916 Easter Uprising. He was hanged at Pentonville on the 3rd of August 1916.

In 1923 Ellis had the worst job of his career when he and Robert Baxter hanged Edith Jessie Thompson aged 28 on the 9th of January at Holloway for her part in the murder of her husband Percy who was stabbed to death by Frederick Bywaters. She had to be carried to the gallows and it was reported that her underwear was covered in blood after the hanging. After this all other women were made to wear canvas underpants.

This pair also hanged Susan Newell at Duke Street prison Glasgow on the 10th of October 1923. 30 year old Newell had strangled newspaper boy, John Johnston, who would not give her an evening paper without the money. She was the first woman to hang in Scotland for over fifty years and on the gallows refused the traditional white hood.

John Ellis carried out his final execution on the 28th of December 1923, when he hanged John Eastwood at Armley prison in Leeds, for the murder of his wife. In March of 1924 he tended his resignation due to poor health, having executed a total of 203 people. Before his suicide on September 20th 1932, Ellis wrote his memoirs 'Diary of a Hangman' which has been recently reprinted.

He retired in 1924, attempting suicide later that year. On September 20, 1932, he drunkenly threatened his wife and child with a razor, then slit his own throat.

How to use it?
1. Add Bluetooth functions to your devices --- Plug the Bluetooth audio adpter into any devices with 3.5mm audio port, such as PC, PSP, iPod, PAD, MP3, MP4, MPS, PMP, media player, Walkman, Diskman, TV, mobile with MP3 function and etc.
2. Power On/Off & Pairing:
Power On --- Press and hold the bluetooth button for 3 seconds until the blue LED flash quickly for 3 times.
