But big families have a way of looking after themselves, and Ruth, the youngest, says she was well cared for. At the age of 19 she headed for Hollywood. She did not make it into the film business. She took a course in industrial design, met a boy on the same course and married him. Mattel was started in a garage, adding to another bit of American industrial lore. Ruth Handler and her husband at first made picture frames, then furniture for dolls' houses, then toys, including a child's guitar that found a market. The firm seems to have done reasonably well and in the 1950s Mrs Handler had a holiday in Europe. In Switzerland she came across a German-made doll about 11in tall called Blonde Lilli, of improbable proportions, dressed in skimpy clothes, and presumably designed to raise the ambitions of young men. Suppressing her American blushes, Mrs Handler bought three and took them back to America. She said she had been thinking for some time of producing a “grown-up” doll for children, but the men in her firm said there would be no demand for one: what children liked was dolls that looked like babies. Inspired by Lilli, Mrs Handler designed a respectable American doll called Barbie (her daughter's name) with breasts but without nipples and wearing clothes that were pretty but non-provocative. The first dolls were made in Japan and in 1959 “Barbie the teenage model” made its debut at the American Toy Fair in New York. It was the success of the show, selling 350,000 Barbies in the first year. Since then more than a billion Barbies have been sold worldwide. According to Mattel, an American girl aged up to 11 is likely to own ten Barbie dolls. French children are said to own five. But several million grown-up women are also said to own Barbies. “She is more than a doll to them, whatever their age,” Mrs Handler said. “She has become part of them.” There are Barbie collectors of both sexes: a 1959 Barbie that sold for $3 is now said to be worth $5,000 in good condition. Barbie retains an almost sexless body that can puzzle knowing children who wonder how Barbie was born without a belly button and has no obvious means of reproduction. “Hey, Momma...?”“That's enough, dear, or I'll take Barbie away.” In defending Barbie against the feminists Mrs Handler said her creation is a career woman and not at all empty headed. The Furniture of Carlo Mollino (Monographs) Carlo Mollino (1905-73), the son of a prominent engineer of the city of Turin, graduated with honors from the Royal School of Architecture in Turin in 1931. He joined his father's firm in the same year, only to leave to pursue an independent and highly original career in design and architecture seven years later. From the start, both his interests and personality set him apart from his contemporaries. Influenced by the Second Futurism movement and the Surrealist avant-gardes, he was active in an impressive number of fields, including aeronautics, automobile design, art, photography, set design, town planning, furniture, interior decoration and architecture. Highlights from his architectural output include the headquarters of the Societa Ippica Torinese (1935-9) and the Teatro Regio Torinese (1966), both in Turin. Mollino was able to bring together various forms of expression through his profound artistic research. His furniture was based on organic shapes, such as tree branches, animal horns and the human body - the female profile figuring prominently in his design work. These pieces evolved from the appreciation of the shapes of Art Nouveau and the architect Antoni Gaudi, and were more expressive and sculptural than those being produced in Milan at the same time. Most of his furniture designs were site specific one-offs for especially commissioned interiors and were manufactured by the Apelli & Varesio joinery in Turin. This has ensured that these pieces are very rarely available on the market and are highly valued by furniture collectors, as proven by the recent sale at Christie's of one of Mollino's tables for the record price of $3.8 million. Beyond the sculptural aesthetics of his furniture, his designs involved thorough research into materials and technology. He developed a complex construction technique whereby the structure seemed liberated by the weight of the material, as clearly seen in the glass and bentwood Arabesque table (1949), still in production by Zanotta. His famous interiors were richly decorated with fabric, used not only as upholstery but also as spatial device. He aimed to create architecture and interiors that could be manipulated by the user, as with the innovative lighting system for the Miller House (1937), which was mounted on a curving track and could be moved along the ceiling of the house. The Furniture of Carlo Mollino presents for the first time Mollino's complete furniture and interior design. Including drawings and archival photographs, it represents the most comprehensive record of this part of Mollino's production. Realized in collaboration with the Museo Casa Mollino and written by the Museum's curators Napoleone Ferrari and Fulvio Ferrari, this monograph emphasizes the contemporary significance of Mollino's groundbreaking oeuvre. As we walked through the bedroom section I saw this GIANT moose. And I mean giant too!! It was as large as a human. I'm sure that you can tell by looking at it. I used Nathans cameraphone to take the picture. I'm sorry that you can't see the full moose. We had to pickup log furniture at Montana Woodworks in Rexford, Montana and deliver to Tacoma, Washington so it could be reloaded on a freighter destined for Anchorage, Alaska. Even more interesting was the drive up to the village and back down! Montana Woodworks is located in the Rexford Amish Village - Rexford, Montana. Rexford was originally located on the Kootenai River, but with the damming of the river in the 1970s the original townsite was flooded and the town was moved to its current location approximately 10 miles west of Eureka on Montana Highway 37. Montana Woodworks is about 15 miles north of the Koocanusa bridge. Don't turn or veer left off onto any dirt roads until you reach Whitetail Drive, or you'll end up in some wild backcountry! I didn't get any furniture on this trip, but, I did get another Amish cook book to add to my collection. Motel Mosaic recently we stayed at the Log Cabin Motel near Jones Mills, PA. It's 7 miles or so off the Turnpike's Donegal exit in the Laurel Highlands resort area. The soon to be Lyric Office Building and Lyric Theatre occupied addresses 1800-1808 Third Avenue North adress. City directories reveal this location to have been a grocery store, a furniture store, a shoe shop and a saloon. Generak Clark engaged the Birmingham firm of Hendon Hetrack Construction Company to construct the office building and theatre. To operate the theatre, Clark entered into a partnership with Jake Wells. Mr Wells was a leading Southern Theatre owner. Wells owned the Bijou Theatre ( formerly Birmingham Auditorium, Bijou, Lowes Bijou, Pantages, and Birmingham Theatre ) on Third Avenue and Seventeenth Street. The Lyric Theatre was advertised to open its doors on January 12, 1914. Due to an injunction filed by the Orpheum Theatre the Lyric opened January 14, 1914. The dispute centered around the fact that both the Orpheum and Lyric Theatres had a vaudeville booking contract with B.F. Keith Shows. The Lyric would present B.F. Keith Big Time Vaudeville from 1914 until the opening of the Ritz Theatre in 1926. Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they: (1) They eat less, (2) They don't ask for money all the time, (3) They are easier to train, (4) They normally come when called, (5) They never ask to drive the car, (6) They don't smoke or drink, (7) They don't want to wear your clothes, (8) They don't have to buy the latest fashions, (9) They don't need a gazillion dollars for college. They are well taken care of, and they take care of us. We belong to the same family. Maggie Mae 10/15 My sister's new family member. She is 2 yrs. old, AKC registered. Tonight is Maggie's first night in her new home. Her previous owners were moving and were heartbroken to give her up, but I know she is in a good home and will be cared for and loved for many, many years to come. Update 10/16 I think I may have spoke too soon about Maggie Mae. She is beautiful, yes, but I just got a call from my sister, who took the day off to help her get aclimated with the house, cats, etc. She was practically in tears!! Seems that everything the previous owners said the dog does NOT do, she DOES do! up on the furniture, peed on the floor, chews on anything she can get her mouth on, chases the cats, hates the harness, barks incessantly while in the crate.. . . . (why a 2 year old is still being crated is beyond me!) They said 'oh, she LOVES the crate'. "Loves wearing the harness". " Loves cats". NOT!! I don't think dear Maggie Mae will be staying with my sister much longer.. . . The reason they want an older dog is because they don't have the time to spend on training from scratch as in a puppy. I don't think the previous owner has done much with this dog. It's really sad, she is so beautiful! Update 10/17 Mags is still with them. She has settled a very little bit but still cannot be trusted around the cats alone, but in the next week or so just may turn out to be the doggie we hope she can be. My BIL is working with her (and bonding, I might add . . .) they are sloooowly beginning to see a more aggreeable pooch. With excercise, work and perserverance! Gotta find that calm, submissive mind in there somewhere!! Oh, where is Cesar Milan when you need him? 10/19 Update: Yesterday morning the dog went after the black and white kittie and the poor cat was shaking so bad that they both decided it was in the best interests of the cat, and peace in the house if they found another home for her (and before they bonded with her anymore than they already have).. So, Maggie is now the proud owner of a home in the country with 4 doggie fenced acres to run safely on with her other doggie companion who she met last night and instantly became friends with. Her new mommy is a veterinarian with no children, just lots and lots of naminals. The woman's husband fell in love with Mags on sight. I guess he's even a strong enough man he was able to actually pick her up! A good strong man, that's what she needs. So, goodbye Mags! This car is east of New Richmond, Wisconsin and in remarkable condition for its age. It has been used as a workshop for many years with the train air brake line used to power pneumatic tools and the headlight housing protecting an exterior outlet from the weather. The original clerestory roof is intact and in good condition beneath the add-on corrugated steel roof. Most of the seats are gone from the interior but most of the inside has not been repainted and the aged varnish still shows with the interior lettering plainly visible. The windows are all still on the car with a broken pane here and there. This car sold at auction on August 9, 2009 for $1200 and it is believed the new owner will keep the car on this property for use as a shed. There's no mistaking this trolley for anything else despite all the years, the added on roof, the improvised door and the sylvan setting. This resting place is about 25 miles east of the easternmost extent of the Twin City Trolley network (Stillwater, Minnesota). By 2009 this car had spent more of its life as a workshop in the woods than it had as a people mover.
