Spring is in the air! 67/365

Flip flops, sunglasses, phone, nail varnish. Perfect summer day. Even though it's not even spring yet.

& this is the second ever 365 that I have not included myself in. It was getting too irritating. The first 365 photo that I didn't put my self in was day 2/365, so that seems quite a while back.

Thursday:

No school today! It's field trip day today, and Upper Sixth don't have to do anything except stay at home & study.

My Dad brought my breakfast in bed (a piece of toast & a cup of tea) and told me to get up & start studying. Instead I read Empire (brilliant magazine; check it out sometime) & then fell asleep again.

I finally got up at 11am, at which point I spent ages putting off work. When I finally started my theatre essay I got stuck. It's practically finished - I just need to refine it a little, but I wasn't sure which bits to take out. I went upstairs & found my mom had left me a big box of her makeup that she no longer wanted. Most of it had hardly been used. I felt kinda sad having to through out products by Dior of YSL, but they had been used & were kinda gross so they had to go. Anyway, I spent so long distracted by this that when my Dad came home & announced it was time to go to my Spanish tutoring I had to get dressed in only 10 minutes.

Spanish was successful (but hard). I now know the imperfect & preterite tenses, & the imperfect irregular verb endings. Yay! &

In the evening there was a drinks party at our house for some international educational agents. They tour around schools & then recommend the best schools to international students. We're always the best out of the schools in the wider area. One group for Ukraine sends 10 students a year, & before we entered the market they'd been sent to different schools. Now they're all sent to us. A couple of schools got a little angry about that. I chatted to a few, & then I had to head over to the Arts Centre for the final night of Hamlet. Alice & Loran were there too, & it was the night I actually got to sit in the audience & watch it.

They've had 6 and a half months to rehearse (usually school productions only get 2 and a half) so I didn't expect them to be bad, but it wasn't brilliant. The main actor, Josh, is outstanding, & really will do well in the theatre world, but the others . . . were okay. People who don't really study theatre would think it was good, but when I was talking to Konstantin (who is also very interested in theatre) he said a lot of stuff unprompted that I'd said the night before.

One fun bit from last night caused us to get told off by my English teacher. I was sitting with my English teacher on one side of me, & on the other was Alice. I didn't want to lean into my teacher, so I put my arm over Alice's shoulder, and then started squidging Loran's shoulder on the other side of Alice, just for the hell of it. Then Loran put her arm over Alice so it was lying across my shoulder. Then she started stroking her hand across my chest, getting closer & closer to my cleavage. We were just doing this as a joke, you know, messing around, so I batted her hand away. She then started patting her hand across my neck and all over my face, because she couldn't actually see me, & it was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. Because I wasn't supposed to laugh this made it all the more funny, I tried to disguise the laugh as a cough, but this made Alice & Loran laugh, & we were soon giggling really loudly. It doesn't sound funny, & is more one of those "you had to be there" kinda moments, but I wanted to remember it.

& then I came home & slept. No homework done. Just can't face it. Far too tired.

I finally received my Coastal Scents 88 palettes yesterday (x2 i got both the matte and the shimmer /drool) from the United States.

It was SO cheap - like $22 a palette of 88 colours, and since so many of the creative eye artist genius extraordinaires on here use it to great effect I thought I would give it a bash.

Here is my first attempt here with the palette.

I have also applied my first ever pair of false eyelashes...well I have worn them before but not put on myself. First time lucky too! Next time they need to be a tiny bit shorter.

I can't work out how to make them look like they are not stuck on when my eyes are closed :( so suggestions welcome.

It's still not as bright as I would like, but maybe its just the colour combo.

Think I used about 6 diff colours. Will ID them later in case anyone is interested, but I am more interested in going to bed right now tbh!

After I graduated with a degree in theater, I was cast in a musical version of "Dracula" with a female Dracula lead (not me)....I was a vampyre who danced the "Thriller" dance before intermission....Richardson Community Theater...Ellen was a good friend and came to see it and then we went to take photo booth pictures. Exhibits 5 and 6: Anthropologie Black Cleavage Keyhole Top and Crazy Rainbow Circles Keyhole Skirt. I know my pose hides the keyhole in the skirt, but it is really kind of in a weird, low place anyway. This whole skirt and top combo is just weird. I bought it to go on a weird date, with an ex-bf from high school, like 13 years after we graduated. Ugh. Rather not talk about it. Just like how I don't want to talk about this stupid outfit. Wore the ensemble once, on that date to Sideberns in Tampa in 2002 -- or was it 2003? Whatevs. History. I did wear that slutty top a lot, though. Just with jeans. Never wore the skirt again.

Exhibit 7: Holly's Pink Peep-Toe Slingbacks. One of my BFFs from high school (secret care sister!) wore these to our 20th reunion and then gave them to me. She gave me the shoes off her feet. 1:6 - Neon Genesis Evangelion [3 Years After] Rei Ayanami in blue Plugsuit (kit conversion)

This Rei Ayanami model was inspired by an illustration I found here on FlickR, posted by Awee_19 - for reference, check the posted picture below (since I cannot add it here).

I am not sure what this illustration actually is? Just a semi-official sketch or design version by Ikuto Yamashita, a cover of a fan magzine or a dojinshi? If anyone knows, please let me know!

Anyway, the illustration left a deep impression and I found this alternative Rei design very interesting: the deep blue, asymmetric plugsuit, the red contrasts (reminds me a bit of a Bubblegum Crisis' Priss in her Hardsuit?), the ice blue hair...
Very cool and different, but still "on character" and a unique contrast to the classic white TV series version. Right from the start I knew I would build this character.

First obstacle was to find and actually hunt down an approriate 1:6 scale resin kit for this project. Finally, I got my hands on a cheap recast kit. The kit itself is very good: it offers alternative arm and head pieces for different plugsuit versions, ranging from a "clean" look (which became the basis here) to a bandaged arm in various poses to an alternative, bandaged head. The kit is very nicely detailed, e. g. it features a seperate satchel piece for the back with openings, so that the spine protector (looks like a row of scales) on the figure's back can actually be seen.

So far, so good, but... using a recast kit means that you have to pay a different price than just raw money. The kit came complete, but its casting quality was rather so so. Fit of the bigger parts was good, but upon closer inspection I found a lot of casting flaws. Small, but they summed up, including bubbles at ridges, a hole/depression in one leg where resin was simply missing, poor surfaces with waves and ripples, and bent thin parts (e. g. the seperate rims under the figure's breasts). As a consequence: lots of putty work became necessary - in multiple stages! Ugh...

Building the kit:
For the kit's conversion according to the illustration, two major areas of work had to be dealt with:

First and most obvious detail was the left leg, which is - judging the illustration - a "boot", separated from the rest of the suit and only connected through a tube with somewhere on the back of the figure.

The tube adapter on the left upper leg was built from scratch and putty. Since it is a bulging part and the kit's "natural" left arm position would block sight onto the piece, I moved the left elbow into a different angle - easy task, since the kit's arm consists of two separate parts.

Since no back side view of the figure was available, I assumed that the tube from the hip ends at the satchel unit on the figure's back. Matching connectors and details were added there, too, from Plastruct and Vollmer profile material, putty and bits from the scrapbox.

The second big design challenge was to find good material for the characteristic tubes, which I wanted to include in the figure. I assume that these are pressure tubes which enhance the plug suit's vacuum function, for its tight fit? Not sure, but they look cool...

What made the task quite tricky was the fact that these tubes appear to be (at least in some parts) transparent on the illustration? Through sheer luck I found a neat solution among picture frame equipment: round 3mm diameter cables made from a transparent plastic material - probably polycarbonate. The material is stiff and strong, hard to cut, but can be formed and bent through heat (and patience). I used boiling water and a simple hair dryer for this task, and it turned out that this material was just excellent for shaping the various cables that run along the figure.

Plugs and other stuff along the clear tubes were again made from Plastruct profiles, thread, duct tape and more pieces from the junk box.

Painting and finishing the kit:
For painting, I completely went for the brush. The illustration looks simple, but upon closer inspection I found lots of different shades of blue and violet.
After fillering and priming (a tedious task - the recast surface was more uneven than expected, and with each primer turn more flaws became visible...), I laid out the red contrasts first with Humbrol 153 (Insignia Red; FS 31136) and 174 (Signal Red), and some detail areas like the soft knee guards in flat black (Humbrol 33) with dry brushing in Oxford Blue (Humbrol 104).

Next, the suit received a base color of RAL 5010 "Lufthansa Blue". I used 350 from Revell - I had preferred Humbrol's 198, since I hate Revell colors for their pasty consistency, but this tone is out of production... Finding a good, "pure" blue tone that would match the illustration was pretty tough, because many stock tones just are too grey or have a greenish hue.

Violet contrast areas, e.g. the "belt" under the breasts and the areas in the armpits and on the lower arms, received a basic

Anyways, I have that stupid look on my face because I was laughing at the fact that I'm in my underwear and a tank top, and really (though you may not believe it) I'm a fairly modest girl.

Also, I love that mirror to death, but it's hopelessly scratched and scuffed... so that explains the imperfections on the surface! I actually DID clean it for this shot...

On the way home, we decided to take a quick trek into the Everglades. This big boy is one of several captive alligators at Gator Park.

We saw them in the wild, too, but none were the size of this fellow.

Did you know this creature can exist for up to 6 or 7 years without eating a bite of food? It's true, in fact, they stay lean and mean because they eat only a few pounds of food in an entire year.

No wonder they're so ugly -- I'd be that ugly, too, living on that kind of diet.

Thoriko ancient theatre/lavrio

The ancient Theatre of Dionysus at Thoriko, 2 km from the town of Lavrion, which is one of the first and most important in ancient Greece.
Unique due to its shape which comprises an elongated layout with an oval orchestra, it was built in the late 6th century BC and it is the earliest found so far in Greece. The theatre was excavated by the American School of Classical Studies in 1886.

The position of the ancient deme of Thorikos was located on the hill Velatouri on the edge of the plain of modern Thorikos, near the sea. Among the oldest ancient demes of Attica, Thorikos was one of the 12 settlements (komai) that, according to tradition, took part in the political unification under Athens (synoikismos) by Theseus. Due to its proximity to the mines of Lavrion, Thorikos was the mining centre of Lavreotika region. The site was inhabited from the Neolithic age (ca. 4500 BC) and without interruption until the 1st century BC.
The excavations have brought to light part of the prehistoric settlement, as well as an extensive part of the historical deme, namely residential quarters, cemeteries, the theater, and the so-called "industrial quarter", along with ancient mines. It is noteworthy that mine extraction in Thorikos dates back to around 3000 BC.
