DSCF6441-2 By 2070 or 2080, I will not be here.

1's side has a story. Everyone local from this town says.

It's a bad town. Kids hang around with bad bad people. Petty crimes and drugs and party culture. It's bad. Make humans rotten by they are 20 years old.

1 was born here and so on. By 17 he was pretty much traumatized but he weren't supposed to go to college or anything but can't stay in the town but no where to go for what either.

Then 1's half brother died from Heroine overdose. His brother was in jail because of drug issue but he got bailed out or released because of good behavior or something.

Then his mother - probably stepmother gave him some extra money - so that he can be out of jail and the first day out of jail he won't be penny less.

Then 1's brother called up a drug dealer immediately and bought decent amount of Heroine right away. And he overdosed himself. He was found dead by next day.

1 got outraged so tried to hunt down the dealer and so on. Revenge. Pursuit. Who took away my brother? Apparently 1 liked his brothers a lot.

Then 1 met with 2. They didn't plan on marriage or anything but they didn't notice 2 got pregnant until 2 was 6 month pregnant. Too late for aborting a baby.

So they got married. Moved to south. But they didn't have a fit with south. So they came back to this small bad town of north rust belt.

And 2 got pregnant again.

And back in this old town, 1 started to lose his balance. He can't feel okay. So he goes for drinks and parties and drugs. Another baby came.

2 says her mom got her in the same way. Not planned. Accidental relationship - and then her mom got pregnant - and she noticed it also way too late. and 2 was born.

And then those 2 brilliant girls - their kids.

1 never gets any real attention or understanding from surroundings. even from 2. 1 goes to counseling. Goes to rehab. Goes detox. Goes hospital.

But no one listens to him. He just gets more of chemical doses. Psychiatry pills. Take them regularly. Still he is out with friends - narcotics or underground stuff in circulation. Pot to drinks and all other stuff.

Hey, he's got an issue or issues - piled over him past 20 years or so. No one dealt with it. And his brain can't process it so he goes for substances to fuzz that wrong feeling.

Yeah but state sanctioned institutions are only allowed to issue more pills - more substances into his body, veins and brain.

It might work.

I think it won't work.

But that's the only allowed treatment. State sanctioned.

Hey, my name is New York Times and I report the coverage on this issue maybe every 5 years or 10 years. This NY state's treatment on drug addicts are least effective and most costly. Because we don't make sure "relapse" won't happen. We just put addicts in hospital for 2 weeks - with attendance and care and control, they'd be cold-turkeying for 2 weeks - but we have nothing institutionalized to prevent them doing drugs again.

But you know, state money circulate very well in that way.

Well, by all means no one is paid enough to attend all these troubled people and addicts - and their kids.

The scientists who worked on these psychiatry pills don't know those towns and cities. They never walk there. They never been there.

Or what are they doing? (very partial, limited scope science, or applying science to something very degrading...)

One night he crashes his car into the pole at gas station. Car is totaled. And his friends at the passenger seat decides going to break in the gas station and steal something. (what a silly idea.) And they got jailed.

1's father bails 1 out immediately. His father says it's okay. I can't listen to his problem. I don't think about how it's going to be. But I can't keep him in jail. I don't think about what's gonna happen next down the line - but I just bail him out without a thought.

Divorce. Custody. Who pays how much to whom. Court. 1 is in and out of hospital.

2 even can't think about really talking to 1.

Still a girl - one of their elder daughter has wide open world - psychology - perspective and intellect. She tells 1 in analogy that she doesn't want to be separated from her father.

That maybe the hope. She hasn't closed her world. Her father is there - naturally there and she just can feel and do things - in a flow.

[*One day we may really figure out what's wrong with adults - what's wrong with their capacity to disregard, wall, separate etc - really scientifically - how our brains do this.]

Come down to NJ/NYC - we will see South Plainfield, basically 1's same kind would be renting Motels and having cheap drinking and probably drug parties from Tuesday. Surrounding is a similar looking beautiful country side originally - farms and barns. Few times already we noticed how it smells and looks good - and nice as in upstate NY.

Soon I will meet Latinos in Queens. I would be on Line 1 and Line 4. I would come to see Flushing. I'd come to notice the pattern in land use and how each borough and ethnic community th

Mykonos Island The Ship Was Late So We Missed The Afternoon Here

Mykonos Island The Ship Was Late So We Missed The Afternoon Here

Archaeological finds indicate that the Ionians settled on Mykonos in the early part of the 11th century BC. More recent discoveries have uncovered remnants in Ftelia beach from the Neolithic Kares tribe dating back to as far as 3000 BC.

In Greek mythology Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Gigantes, and the island was named in honor of Apollo's grandson Mykons. During these ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 2km away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.

Modern Mykonos
Today, Mykonos is one of the world's most cosmopolitan islands, having become increasingly popular especially during the last 50 years due to the numerous international jet set visitors that spend their holidays on the island. It is widely known for its extremely rich, diverse and often intense nightlife featured by a vast number of bars and nightclubs. Mykonos is also distinctive for its sandy beaches, offering everything from crystal-clear waters, windsurfing potential, sea-side tavernas, bars featuring 24-hour loud music and even full nudity in some cases. Many Greek and international celebrities have summer residences in Mykonos and can often be seen walking the white-washed roads or having dinner at a small street-side table of an expensive restaurant or a taverna. The island is also one of the most upscale areas of Greece, and its real estate is very expensive. The popularity of the island has given rise to a wave of real estate development with the construction of private homes, villas, and hotels. This has raised some concerns that the island may be gradually losing its character. In order to prevent this, the island's zoning requires all new buildings to abide by the rules of the Cycladic architectural style.

Guest House Motel

Guest House Motel

Yet another great old motel ground into a dumpy, seedy place. It seems that Mom-n-Pop motels fair a lot better when not in urban areas. Sure, some close up, but you don't as often see the "hourly trade" or other dregs at them. They just seem to fade away, or become more long-stays (for locals). It must be hard to keep a motel nice for the travelling public when you're not on the main routes anymore.

Next to motels with garages, I love motels where you pull into a courtyard like this.

love motel in Seoul

love motel in Seoul

love motels have hourly rates and are meant as places for unmarried people to get some privacy (or a place to bring an escort or a mistress presumably).

They also have reasonable overnight rates though, and they've kind of cornered the hotel market between "hostel floor" and "five stars" so they're pretty unavoidable. We don't really mind this because they're SO funny. Look at this wallpaper! The black panel at the end is not black but actually sparkly!

American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute, 505-507 West Street at Jane Street

American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute, 505-507 West Street at Jane Street

In 1912, it sheltered survivors of the Titanic. It became a sailors’ haven in the 1920s. And in recent years, the storied 1907 waterfront building became a quirky “residential hotel.”
Completed in 1908, the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute was designed by William A. Boring, the architect renowned for Ellis Island’s immigrant station. Originally built as a hotel for sailors with cabin-like rooms, the landmarked hotel was lovingly restored on its centennial in 2008.
In 1912, the survivors of the Titanic stayed at the hotel until the end of the American Inquiry into the ship’s sinking. The surviving crew held a memorial service at the hotel four days after the ship sank. In 1944, the YMCA took over the hotel from the Seaman’s Relief Center, as the hotel was then called.

During the ‘80s and ‘90s, the hotel was part of downtown New York’s bohemian culture, hosting Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the Million Dollar Club, amongst many other rock-n-roll events. The hotel has continued to house guests with more dash than cash ever since.

The building's nautical past is preserved today: the "cabin rooms" are as compact as a sailor's quarters, though thankfully they sport some modern touches like an iPod dock, flat-screen TV, and A/C. Larger "captain cabins," featuring views of the Hudson, will be available in 2009.

Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion

Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion

Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion
The P-3 Orion is a peerless airborne hunter. Its reputation as the ultimate submarine finder was achieved through more than 35 years of service, from the Cuban Missile Crisis to round-the-clock, low profile patrols throughout the Cold War. Today the P-3 is still very busy, remarkably well adapted for maritime patrol in the post-Cold War world. In fact, no other plane is better suited.

The P-3 can be outfitted with a variety of sophisticated detection equipment. Infrared and long-range electro-optical cameras plus special imaging radar allow it to monitor activity from a comfortable distance. It can stay aloft for extremely long periods, and its four powerful Allison T56-A-14 engines can fly at almost any altitude. And like all good hunters, the P-3 has no problem carrying weapons.

In addition to sub hunting, the P-3 is now called upon for peacekeeping and relief missions around the world. When civil war flared in Liberia, P-3s were the eyes and ears of forces protecting the U.S. Embassy. In Somalia, P-3s monitored street operations in Mogadishu from well off shore. In Rwanda, P-3s tracked large groups of refugees to help pinpoint relief efforts. Then in Desert Storm, P-3s logged more than 12,000 hours in 1,200 combat surveillance sorties. With capabilities like these, it is no wonder that somewhere above the earth, there is nearly always an Orion, serving as an eye in the sky.

lion

lion

Almost every experience I had in Kenya was an alloy of dark and light. It’s a place of bizarre juxtapositions and harsh contradictions. My experience of this lion was a classic example. As I was taking this shot, I couldn't believe my luck, my priveledge, so close to a creature I have loved and respected in the abstract all my life (a hardcore cat guy, I). A few seconds later, another safari van arrived, nudging in next to ours and getting as close to the pride as possible. Then another van. (The safari drivers all have CB radios so they can communicate about the location of popular animals, lions being at the top of the list).

The regal feline aloofness of this young male vanished as he got up and slunk away, wearing the same pitiful expression I’ve seen on a house cat fleeing a terrorizing child. When we left, there were six vans surrounding the pride. The words that came to mind were “desecration” and “disneyland.“ I was disgusted with the whole scene and felt dirty for participating in it. I felt even worse after we took a break at one of the lodges in the park (this was Masai Mara, by the way), which turned out to be a 4-star hotel where the predominantly Western clientele ate creme brulee and sipped espresso poolside while watching animals on the plains below. The Americans were in their big, sloppy shorts and dumb socks trying to pretend they were having a good time (they *never* looked comfortable), the Europeans languorously smoking cigarettes in their middle-aged bikinis and acting so damn bored and superior. Everyone using their money to ensure that the only contact they had with Kenyans (most of whom cannot afford the time or money to visit the park) was with the well-mannered, obsequious ones dressed in colonial servants’ white. Or the one handsome Masai loitering in the lobby, dressed in the traditional red garb, paid well to look fierce and say “ooga booga” and wave his spear and flirt with the ladies and never refuse a photograph.

But, yes, if the gross safari scene did not exist, neither would the animals. And thus the marriage of dark and light. 242_4216

White Hall State Historic Site

White Hall State Historic Site

White Hall State Historic Site preserves architectural history and commemorates one of Kentucky's most colorful and historical 19th-century figures, Cassius Marcellus Clay; firey emancipationist, U.S. Minister to Russia and friend to Abraham Lincoln. His daughter, Laura Clay, born at White Hall in 1849, inherited her father's political activism and battled for women's suffrage and states' rights. In 1920, Laura Clay became the first woman to be nominated for President of the United States by a major political party.

One of the most interesting aspects of the tour was hearing many tales about it's most famous and colorful occupent, Cassius Clay, who fought and won numerous duels with a bowie knife, and married a 15-year-old girl when he was 83. The marriage lasted about one year and ended in divorce. The young woman then remarried a man near her own age and the two of them moved back into White Hall with Cassius Clay to work as his hired hands.

The Georgian-style mansion was first built as Clermont in 1798-1799. In the 1860s the house was greatly expanded and renamed Whte Hall. Upon entering the house we were immediately impressed with the 16-foot ceilings and a sweeping spiral staircase. Innovations in the house include a forerunner of a central heating system fueled by two fireboxes in the basement with ducts leading to fireplaces in serveral rooms of the newer section of the house. White Hall was also one of the first homes in Kentucky with an indoor plumbing system.

In addition to the house, White Hall State Historic Site also includes several detached out-buildings including a stone kitchen, ice house, chicken house and more. The park's gift shop is located in the estate's original corn crib.

White Hall @ The Winter Palace (Hermitage)

White Hall @ The Winter Palace (Hermitage)

The White Hall, like the other apartments in the south-west part of the Winter Palace was created by Alexander Briullov for the wedding of the future Emperor Alexander II in 1841. The interior, finished in different shades of white, is notable for its rich plastic decoration. Placed in the central part of the hall are figures of ancient Roman gods; the Corinthian columns are topped by figures embodying the arts. The display of French art from the second half of the 18th century includes landscapes by Hubert Robert, portraits by Jean-Louis Voille and Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, an enormous Sevres vase and also works by David Roentgen (1743-1807), the celebrated furniture-maker of the age of Classicism.
