Fontaine Bartholdi

Fontaine Bartholdi

Shine A Light

Shine A Light

2010 Lyon Festival Of Lights. Another cool opportunity to get out there and shoot! This year there were a lot of tripods out there..
As a reminder, it happens on the 8th of December and has recently been extended to a few days after that.
The city expresses gratitude toward Mary, mother of Jesus on December the 8th of each year. This tradition dictates that every house place candles along the outsides of all the windows to produce a spectacular effect throughout the streets.
The festival also includes other activities based on light with 80 happenings throughout the city, set up by various artists, students or inhabitants.
On the picture, you can see the Hotel-Dieu building, a former hospital, soon to be renovated into something else. The rays of light actually come from the Fourviere basilica, at the top of the neighboring hill.

I was eating breakfast in Frankfurt when I read this page of 'Spook Country'. It's an anti-Semitic rant by Milgrim's captor, Brown.

An excerpt from elsewhere: "The reason Americans weren't freaking out over this NSA thing, Milgrim assumed, was that they'd already been taking it for granted, since at least the 1960s, that the CIA was tapping everybody's phone. It was the stuff of bad episodic television. It was something little kids new to be true."

I sneezed all evening, but when I woke up in the morning the viral snot-fit was already passing.

Avon Gorge Hotel

Avon Gorge Hotel

The Avon Gorge Hotel, and the disused Clifton Rocks Railway boarding area(Left)
The hotel was built opened in 1898 as a hot spring spa. Hot springs made the city famous back then, as the one below in Hotwells bubbled up between tides at 76 degrees centigrade, and folk flocked country wide to sample them as it was believed to cure almost anything and became very fasionable. The Hotwells area of Bristol got its name from the very same reason. The hot water was said to be 175% more radioactive than the public water used!
By the late 1600's the water was being bottled and shipped worldwide. This also made the city famous for its glass making!
In the 1890's, an application was made to the Merchant Venturers to build the Clifton Rocks Railway with a "Hydropathic Institution" attatched! The Hot well water was pumped up through the rocks to the Institution that stands next to the Hotel.
In later years, Officers would stand on the terrace of the Avon Gorge Hotel to watch flypasts of their newly qualified Pilots swoop under the Clifton Suspension Bridge. It must of been a spectacular sight indeed!
In more recent time, the Hotel was a favourite of the famous, like Hollywood actor Cary Grant, who would stay here when visiting his mother who remained living in Bristol.
The railway ceased ferrying passengers from Hotwells to Clifton when it closed in the 1930's. During WW2 however, the carriages were removed & it was used as a safe place for the BBC to continue broadcasting vital war time information. The BBC Radio's licence expired in 1960, and it closed for good. It still remains the only four track funicular railway in the entire UK.
Personally, I think its a tragic shame this increadible feat of engineering has been left to rot. It would be wonderfull to re-open it as a tourist attraction or something, and that gorgeous cluster of about 4 tiny houses at the foot, be turned into a museum of its history & the Hotels maybe?

Grand Spa Clifton Bristol

Grand Spa Clifton Bristol

In the 1950s and 60s the Grand Spa became the most popular dance venue in Bristol. Forty years later a fan still remembered “I was one of the girls tramping down the steep stairway wearing either hugely bouffant petticoats or very tight skirts and if for some reason I wasn’t able to go there at least once a week, life just wasn’t worth living"

The Grand Spa ballroom was without doubt the most glamorous venue in Bristol”. Twice weekly it hosted Bristol’s best dance bands, particularly John Roberts’ and Dennis Mann’s. There was also a faint chance of catching a glimpse of film star Cary Grant who often stayed at the hotel in the 1960s another very popular venue not far away was the Glen.

Stanley Hotel in Daylight

Stanley Hotel in Daylight

Sorry for the delay everyone - and now, back to the Stanley Hotel Ghost Tour!

By the turn of the century it appeared that the lives of the ingenious F.O. Stanley and his twin brother were truly blessed. They had become millionaires in their 30s by inventing "Dry Plate technology" and being bought out by George Eastman of Kodak. They followed this up with the extremely successful Stanley Steamer company. But the turn of the century saw a change in their luck; F.O.'s brother Freeman would shortly be killed in a car accident, while in 1902 F.O. was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The doctors worked feverishly, but to no avail. Eventually all they could do was to recommend he move somewhere less humid. After consideration, the extremely ill F.O. and his wife Flora made their way to Denver, Colorado having been assured that its dryness made it the best location to relocate to.

Unfortunately, upon reaching their destination the local doctor they contacted also sadly told them it was the most polluted city in the United States. Ironically, life in Denver promised an even swifter death from tuberculosis for F.O..

Unable to help F.O. and hoping to ease his passage, the Doctor told the dying tycoon that he had a cottage near the Rocky Mountain National Park in a place called Estes Park. He offered it to them as a place to live out the last few months of F.O.'s life where he would be surrounded by the beauty of the Colorado countryside.

F.O. and Flora made their way to Estes Park. But the lingering, painful death they expected never happened. Miraculously, and to the shock of their Denver doctor, the air of Estes Park cured the deathly ill F.O..

To preserve his health, F.O. and Flora made their permanent home in Estes Park. They purchased large lots of land from Lord Dunraven and built a beautiful new home. But Flora, who was used to the busy social circle back home in the east hosting hundreds of dinner guests, grew lonely and bored. Not one to lay idle, she reckoned that if she couldn't go to her friends, why couldn't they come to her and also enjoy the wonders of Colorado. She asked F.O. if they could invite all their friends out west to visit them, which F.O. wisely agreed to. Flora instantly threw herself into the building of a guest house to house all her friends.

That "guest house" is now called the Stanley Hotel.

Stanley Hotel Haunted Music Room

Stanley Hotel Haunted Music Room

Since Halloween is soon upon us I thought it was time to get back to the Stanley Hotel and finish the ghost tour.

This is the Music Room. It was the favorite room of F.O. Stanley's wife, Flora. It's also the only room left on the main floor that retains the original look of the hotel.

In 1997 when The Shining miniseries was filmed at the hotel the walls and moldings of the entire main floor with the exception of the Music Room were painted to look like wood. Originally they were all white plaster to provide this clean, fresh look that you can still see in the Music Room.

The piano in the alcove is the original piano that was played by many celebrities, including John Philip Sousa. Sousa played it several times and each time he would scratch his name and year into the underside of the piano cover to mark the date. Several years ago the piano was sent out for refurbishment and tuning. When it came back the refurbisher proudly told the hotel manager that not only had they re-tuned the piano, they'd also, "removed a bunch of scratches on the wood some vandals must have done" so sadly Sousa's signatures are now lost.

This room is said to be haunted by Flora's ghost. She can be seen sometimes standing near the windows or seen standing behind the viewer when she/he looks into the mirror that hangs over the fireplace to the far left. Ghostly music is heard late at night and ghostly dancers seen from time to time. One story tells of a patron or tourist to the hotel who sat at the piano, tried a few keys, and then complained about the fact the piano was out of tune... at which point the cover for the piano key's came slaming down on his hands.

Apparently Flora is sensitive about her piano.

1960's George Hotel, Buchanan Street, Glasgow. Luggage Label.

The George Hotel was owned by Peter Fox. The hotel, which has been host to Taggart, and scenes from films including Trainspotting, Small Faces and Carla’s Song, was also the backdrop to one of the most astonishing redevelopment sagas in Glasgow’s history. The George Hotel - St Kilda

The George Hotel - St Kilda

St Kilda's George Hotel is a local icon. Built in 1885, during Melbourne's boom period it originally operated as a coffee palace. Designed in the Italianate style the building was converted into apartments during the 1990's while the stylish public bar continues to operate on the ground floor. The buildings facade and interiors are generally in very poor condition which could be seen as a response to the gentrification of St Kilda over the last two decades.
