Plaza Restaurant

Plaza Restaurant

Plaza Restaurant
Main Street
The Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World

I'll need to reach into the already processed queue here and there as I deal with the pile of photos from Tokyo (and New York…).

The Plaza Restaurant falls under the Sci-Fi Dine-In rules for me: 1) Don't have anything but low expectations 2) Don't order anything that's not a burger and a shake. The food is fine but nothing even remotely noteworthy. I don't know why the food at the Disneyland/Magic Kingdom parks is so unspectacular, especially when the food in the other theme parks, and especially the resort hotels and Epcot, can be so amazing. I mean, the meals one can have in the hotels or Epcot are basically nitpicky, foodie-level good. I'd throw certain dishes from California Grill, Narcoose's, Napa Rose, Yachtsman Steakhouse and even San Angel Inn up against some from Thomas Keller, Bobby Flay, Tom Collichio and the overrated Rick Bayless any day. But I've never had anything that even tries to be better than an okay meal in the Magic Kingdom/Disneyland. This is mostly fine as it's more about atmosphere at those parks, but Epcot and even Disney Sea show that quality food and theme parks can coexist happily*.

I don't mean that as snobby as I love a good cheeseburger, shake, and box of popcorn, but it would be nice to get an amazing meal every now and then to go along with greatest theme park on the planet earth. I consider a trip to Walt Disney World to be as much about the culinary experience as anything because the food is so good… except at the Magic Kingdom.

* The only exception is Club 33 in Disneyland, but that doesn't really count and honestly even that menu is very "safe" compared to what you can find in some of the high end restaurants in WDW.

Day 138/365 - Carnival in Venice

Day 138/365 - Carnival in Venice

I'm in Venice! Yaaaayyyy! After dreaming about it for years I'm finally here. Switching planes in London was a hassle (moving between terminals, having to go through a security screening again, staring at a status board for 40 minutes waiting for them to assign my flight to a gate, etc.) but all the travail involved in getting here was worth it.

I'm here until next Sunday. There wasn't much time for sightseeing today. By the time I got to my hotel it was after 4:00. I could have gotten to the hotel more quickly if I'd taken the bus from the airport, but I wanted to enter Venice from the water. It just seemed more fitting that way. Plus the cost of the vaporetto (water bus) from the airport was included in the price of the Venice card I bought, so it was even economically sensible. I had to change vaporettos at St. Marks though and being on that boat full of tourists and locals with my suitcase and backpack was no picnic.

My hotel is great. It's just a short distance from the vaporetto stop near the train station. It's a small place, only 50 rooms. It used to be an abbey before it was converted to a hotel. The room isn't very big (it was formerly a monk's cell after all), but it's perfect for me. So far the only downside to staying here are the bells from the nearby church that ring for about a minute straight at 6:15 and 7:15 each morning. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about a wake-up call.

The first two days I'm here in Venice coincide with Carnevale, so after I got unpacked and freshened up I trundled off to the mask makers fair in Campo St. Stefano to buy myself a mask. I could've picked up a cheap cardboard and plastic, mass-produced, made in China mask from any one of the many stalls in town selling trinkets to tourists, but I wanted the real thing. The one I bought is a hand-made Arlecchino (harlequin) mask made of leather. It only cost me 18 euros and I'm pretty happy with it, although it does make it hard to see down and forget about peripheral vision.

But who cares about that? It's Venice, it's carnival, and I'm here!

"Aqua Alta!!!" Venice under water, December 2002

I was one my way to Greece and had to spend a night in Venice. This was a cheap hotel which was good enough for the night.
When I woke in the morning, the whole lobby was flooded and some other guests where sitting on the stairs. So I organized some garbage bags, put them round the feet and went out trough the water to the next bridge. There I bought some rubber boots, and went back to the hotel. I took note of all the guests boot size and went back up to the bridge, and bought a pair of rubber boots for everyone.

Mount Saint Helena from Knight's Valley, Sonoma County, CA

Mount Saint Helena from Knight's Valley, Sonoma County, CA

Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Trail

To Stevenson Memorial is 2 miles round trip; to summit of Mt. Saint Helena
is 10 miles round trip with 1,300-foot elevation gain
You can see the imposing mountain towering above the wineries. Mt. Saint Helena is a landmark, a wild backdrop behind the neat cultivated vineyards of Napa Valley.

The best view of the wine country is from the top of 4,343-foot Mt. Saint Helena, reached by a five mile trail that winds through stands of knobcone pine to deliver summit panoramas of not only Napa Valley but the High Sierra and San Francisco Bay as well.

While winter is not the most popular of seasons for touring the wine country, it is the best time for looking down at it from the top of Mt. Saint Helena. Crisp, clear winter days mean breathtaking views from the summit. Local Sierra Club members schedule an annual New Year’s Day hike up the mountain—surely an invigorating way to celebrate the year past and welcome the year ahead.
Most of the summit and broad shoulders of Mt. Saint Helena are protected by Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. Stevenson, best remembered for his imaginative novels, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Treasure Island, honeymooned in a cabin tucked in one of Mt. Saint Helena’s ravines in the summer of 1880.

Quite the world traveler, Stevenson, constantly seeking relief from chronic tuberculosis, globe-trotted from Switzerland to the south of France to Samoa. The native Scot followed his heart to California to marry an American woman, Fanny Osbourne.

Short of money, the newlyweds honeymooned in the abandoned mining camp of Silverado, moving into an old cabin and using hay for a bed. While so encamped, Stevenson filled a diary with local color and later penned an account of his experience, The Silverado Squatters, which introduced him to American readers.

Stevenson flled his notebooks with descriptions of the many colorful Napa Valley denizens—from stage drivers to winemakers—he met. Perhaps the biggest infuence upon Stevenson during his stay on Mt. Saint Helena was the mountain itself; it became the model for Spyglass Hill in his novel Treasure Island.

Today you can take a short (one mile) hike into California literary history by joining the trail leading to the secluded site of the Stevensons’ honeymoon. Wrote Stevenson: “At sunrise, and again later at night, the scent of sweet bays filled the canyon.” A memorial in the form of an open book commemorates the author’s stay on the mountain and marks the site of his cabin.

Travelers interested in learning more about Robert Louis Stevenson and his work should head for the Silverado Museum in St. Helena, located seven miles south of Calistoga. The museum features books, letters, and other memorabilia of Stevenson’s life.

Stevenson Memorial Trail is particularly enjoyable for the first interesting mile as it winds through the forest to the memorial. The next four miles of trail—a well-graded fire road leading to the summit—are frankly a bit monotonous; however, the grand vistas, becoming better and better as you climb, more than compensate.

Directions to trailhead: From downtown Calistoga, at the junction of Highways 128 and 29, head north on the latter road. Highway 29 ascends 8.2 miles to a summit, where you’ll fnd parking at turnouts on both sides of the highway for Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. The trail departs from the west side of the highway. Hint: The not-very-well-signed state park is easy to miss. If you find yourself rapidly descending on Highway 29, you overshot the summit and the state park. Carefully turn around and return to the summit.

The hike: Just above the parking lot is a picnic area. During Stevenson’s day, a stage stop and the Toll House Hotel were located here. The Stevensons came down the hill from their honeymoon cabin to buy provisions.

Signed Stevenson Memorial Trail switchbacks up a shady slope forested with oak, madrone, bay and Douglas fir. A pleasant mile’s walk brings you face-to-face with the granite Stevenson memorial, itself something of a historical curiosity, having been erected by “The Club Women of Napa County” in 1911.

To continue to the peak, scramble up a badly eroded hundred-yard-long stretch of trail to the fire road and turn left. The road soon brings you to a hairpin turn and the first grand view en route. You can admire part of the Napa Valley and surrounding ridges, San Francisco high-rises, as well as two distinct and aptly named nearby peaks: Turk’s Head to the west and Red Hill to the south.

The road continues climbing moderately, but doggedly, up the mountain. Wind-battered, but unbowed, knobcone pine dot the middle slopes of Mt. Saint Helena. Three miles from the trailhead, you’ll pass under some power lines, and another half mile’s travel brings you to a junction with a spur trail leading 0.4 mile to Mt. Saint Helena’s South Peak.

Half-a mile from the summit, the road passes through a forest of sugar pine and Douglas fir, then be

Half-a mile from the summit, the road passes through a forest of sugar pine

Hotel Danieli Excelsior

Hotel Danieli Excelsior

Meet the Hotel Danieli Excelsior, one of the finest hotels in all of Venice. Like practically everything in the beautiful city, each building we see today is merely in its latest iteration, the enumeration of which would likely require two digits. But in the case of the Hotel Danieli Excelsior this is not quite the case. Why that is is a story that is not often told.

The Hotel Danieli Excelsior is actually comprised of three separate buildings two of which can be seen in the image above. The 600 year-old Palazzo Dandolo is the first and oldest of these and is seen on the right. The second is exactly in the middle and is the newest addition to the Venice waterfront, and this is where we find our story, which begins in 1171 during the Venetian Republic’s third century, with an attack on the Genoese settlement of Galata.

In the centuries that followed the collapse of Rome the City-State became the bulwark of the inhabitants of the Italian Peninsula. There was no unifying central power as there had been under the Empire and many medallions of modernity such as running water, a market economy, and defensive armies relied upon the efforts of citizens at the more local levels in order to be brought to fruition. When different city-states found that a relationship between themselves could be beneficial to both they became allies – until the benefits of a new arrangement exceeded those of the old one. The result was a loose-knit system of constantly shifting political, familial, and military alliances, all sprinkled with a modicum of Papal indulgence.

In Venice, the leader of the city-state was an elected official called a Doge. Once elected a Doge served for life – or until, in appreciation for all of his efforts on their behalf, the inhabitants of Venice awarded him an all expenses paid trip to some peaceful monastery to live out the remainder of his life. The Doge was the living embodiment of Venice. He was her political and military leader, as well as her primary religious leader inasmuch as it was he who dictated to the bishops Venice’s position on Church business.

It was in this setting that Galata was attacked and destroyed in 1171. Precisely who had attacked Galata remains unknown to this day but Venice was immediately blamed. In the neighboring Byzantine Empire Venetians were rounded up by the thousands and imprisoned. Venetians were incensed. They would not see their kind rounded up like common criminals accused of a crime they denied committing without a firm response. And so direct, vengeful reprisal from Doge Vitale Michiel became essential in the 16th year of his rule.

The Doge first raised a fighting force – a Navy. This, the first public assumption of military debt in recorded history, was accomplished by forcing the citizenry to loan Venice, according to their means, the money to pay for the construction of the Navy and manpower to crew it. To ensure that everyone paid his share, and to assist in the collection of the money, the Doge divided Venice into the six Sestieri (districts – Sestiere) that still exist today.

In September of 1171 he sailed out of the lagoon with his Navy to avenge his people. Before too long he encountered diplomatic representatives of the Byzantine Empire who assured him that if he were to send an emissary to Constantinople all arguments could be amicably settled under terms that everyone would find acceptable. The Doge accepted and in so doing sealed his fate.

While his representatives spent many months in fruitless negotiations with their Byzantine counterparts, the Doge parked his fleet at Chios awaiting developments. During their stay, plague descended upon the unfortunate warriors and by the spring of 1172 thousands aboard the crowded ships were dead. Survivors were in no shape to fight an enemy that Doge Vitale was learning from his emissaries had no intention of agreeing to anything. Unable to fight, and realizing that his crews were on the verge of mutiny, the Doge was forced to sail his diseased fighting force back to Venice to regroup.

Upon his arrival in Venice the Doge not only had nothing to show for the efforts exerted during a year of absence, he had literally brought the most feared pestilence in all of Europe right to the heart of his city. The inhabitants were not amused and in May of 1172 he faced his Assembly to explain himself. They would hear none of it – and neither would the unruly mob outside the palace. Realizing that his survival depended on immediate flight, he attempted to steal away through a side door and down an alley to a nearby convent. He was intercepted and dispatched with haste by the mob.

An investigation into who had murdered the Doge was immediately ordered by the Assembly. His assassin’s identity was learned and the miscreant brought to justice and executed – ostensibly for interfering in the governmental affairs of Venice. To punctuate the message after his execution, the assassin’s house was o

Ritz Ballroom at the St. Regency Grand Hotel - day 9

Ritz Ballroom at the St. Regency Grand Hotel - day 9

Thuy and I wondered through the hotel late at night and stumbled upon the Ritz Ball Room. I turned on the lights and was just in awe at the decadence. The chandeliers are made of blown glass; even the bedrooms had smaller versions of them.

Thuy and I stayed at the St. Regency Grand hotel for two nights in Rome. Built in 1894 as the first deluxe hotel in Rome, the St. Regis Grand Hotel, Rome is within walking distance of the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and Via Veneto. As the marketing literature states “Upon reopening in mid-December 1999, after an extensive restoration and renovation, the St. Regis Grand Hotel, Rome reclaimed its status as the finest hotel in Rome and one of the best in the world. As a focal point of Rome's diplomatic and political life, we are proud to host many national and international dignitaries, heads of state, business executives, and widely known celebrities.”

It was fabulous. We were even able to get Thai food there! By this point anything besides Italian food seemed enticing. So even though it was most expensive Thai food I ever had it was worth every Euro. Oh the luxury. My hedonistic side was in full indulgence mode.

NC - New Hanover County - The Other Side of the Christmas Eve Sunset from Battle Acre at Fort Fisher

It was cold watching the Christmas Eve sunset from Battery Buchanan at the end of Fort Fisher. A few minutes after watching the sun go below the horizon I got in my car to get warm and to return to the hotel for dinner.

While driving north towards Carolina Beach I saw there was still a lot of color in the rear view mirror. I also noticed more color over the ocean to the east, reflected in the clouds. I pulled into the Battle Acre tour stop at Fort Fisher and took more photos, most of which were to the southeast rather than looking west.

Most of these photos were taken looking over the rock barrier that protects Fort Fisher, towards the beach at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.

I liked the wave action and reflections on the sand in this photo.

I wish I could capture the awesomeness of this cheap hotel room, I recently had to stay at the Microtel in Greensboro due to a Methodist convention that took up all the nicer rooms. The Microtel was serviceable, but kind of dank and old. However, they had these mirrors- one directly across from the bed (not so unusual) and one directly behind the bed, spanning almost the entire length of the wall. I'm sure you're thinking what I was thinking- no, the second thing- this means endless mirror fun! A mirror reflected in a mirror, reflected in a mirror...and so on. The only other places I have seen this kind of fun were in a fairgrounds funhouse and in a Mormon temple. Go figure.
