Near Conroe - 2/22/2010
Closer to home, the clouds started to break up, and I was able to enjoy some sun during the last hour.
It's kind of an anticlimactic ending, I admit, but this was the last photo I took before I made it home. Amusingly, my trip was extended by about another half hour. I discovered the road to my house was closed due to a really bad accident, requiring a detour that was already jam-packed with weekday afternoon traffic! I guess I was meant to stay on the road that much longer. But finally, I was home, safe and sound, with a car, a camera, and a head full of cherished souvenirs and memories.
Thanks again to my friends in Portland, San Jose, Phoenix and Dallas for their generous hospitality. Thanks also to Motel 6 for making this trip more affordable, and thanks to my family and my roommate for keeping the home fires burning, without actually burning the house down!
I'm already ready for the next road trip. I just have to find out where and when it will be...

Denis, Maurice (1870-1943) - 1900 Afternoon in the Woods (Private Collection)
Oil on canvas; 73.5 x 100.3 cm.
Maurice Denis was a French painter, designer, lithographer, illustrator, and writer on art theory. Early in his career he was a Symbolist and a member of the Nabis. He was the chief theorist of the group and one of his articles, ‘Definition of Neo-Traditionalism’ (1890), contains a pronouncement that has become famous as an anticipation of the underlying principle of much modern—especially abstract—art: ‘Remember that a picture—before being a war horse or a nude woman or an anecdote—is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.’ Denis's early work, strongly influenced by Gauguin, did indeed place great emphasis on flat patterning, but he did not intend to encourage non-representational art, for he was also very much concerned with subject matter; he was a devout Catholic and wanted to bring about a revival of religious painting.
Many of his easel paintings have religious subjects, and in 1899 he carried out his first large-scale religious commission—a mural in the Chapelle de la Sainte-Croix at Vesinet. Numerous others followed, and in 1919 he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacre with Georges Desvallieres (1861–1950) to provide church decorations of various kinds, including mosaics and stained glass. Typically Denis's style in his religious work was tender and mild, with pale colors and relaxed lines. He also did a good deal of secular decoration, but his most famous work is probably Homage to Cezanne (1900, Mus. d'Orsay, Paris) showing Denis himself and a number of Cezanne's other admirers, including Bonnard, Redon, Serusier, and Vuillard, gathered round a still-life by the master. His best paintings were done early in his career; after about 1900 they became more classical in style (influenced by visits to Italy) and increasingly bland. From 1914 Denis lived in a 17th-century building in Saint-Germain-en-Laye; it has been attractively converted into the Musee du Prieure, housing a fine collection of works by him and his associates.

KAP in Buenos Aires Floralis Genérica with a Canon S95
It has been a few weeks since I did some KAP and this morning in Buenos Aires the light, the wind and the temperature were ideal. I started with the Floralis Generica with lots of space to fly and test the new GoPro 2. And I walked to the exclusive Recoleta neighbourhood as I always wanted to KAP the Cemetery. The challenge is that the Cemetary is in the middle of the city and space to get airborne is very limited with a few tall trees... I first had a coffe at the "Biela cafe" checked the map, discussed with the hostess at Recoleta tourist office and Karina was really nice as we went together to ask a municipal police officer, if it would be OK to fly a kite and take some pictures.... " Si no hay problema"... Well no problem for the police but trying to get the Dan Leigh R8 Delta high enough to catch some clean wind above the turbulences , and slaloming between trees required either to be crazy or over confident...(probably both!) Everything went well though and this solo session was really high in adrenaline...
Thanks again Karina, you made my day!
=================
Floralis Generica is a sculpture made of steel and aluminum located in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, Buenos Aires, a gift to the city by the Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano. Catalano once said that the flower "is a synthesis of all the flowers and is both a hope that is reborn every day to open." It was created in 2002. The sculpture moves closing its petals in the evening and opening them in the morning.
The sculpture is located in the center of a park of four acres of wooded boundaries, surrounded by paths that get closer and provide different perspectives of the monument, and placed above a reflecting pool, which apart from fulfilling its aesthetic function, protects it. It represents a large flower made of stainless steel with aluminum skeleton and reinforced concrete, which looks at the sky, extending to it its six petals. Weighs eighteen tons and is 23 meters high.
According to Eduardo Catalano, the author, Floralis "means belonging to the flora and therefore the flowers", and Generica "from the concept of "gender" and indicates that it represents all the flowers in the world".

Sometimes low budget does the trick.
This is a friend of mine who teaches in my after school program. He has a big heart and is great with the kids. A few months ago he mentioned that he needed some days off because he was planning to get married. Yesterday he showed me the pic. He and his wife got married in Tahoe, not at a drive-thru chapel but almost. They were wearing their snowboarding gear, including beanies. Not custom beanies with embroidery and arrows saying, "I heart -->". Nope. Just the regular beanies they always wear. His quote from the affair was, "I was really impressed with the guy who married us. I mean, he doesn't even know me and he had some good things to say, stuff that was really appropriate, ya know, from the heart that I would have said." Apparently he and his wife had meant to elope but they accidentally told their parents who were in attendance. Yesterday he mentioned that he is being super nice to his neighbors because his dad is going to build him a house in the backyard as a wedding present.
