Hôtel de Cluny sundial

Hôtel de Cluny sundial

This sundial is found in the courtyard of the Cluny museum and dates from 1674. "Rien sans nous" ("Nothing without us") "nous" ("us") represents the sun and the Sun King.

From Wikipedia:

"The Musee de Cluny, officially known as Musee National du Moyen Age (National Museum of the Middle Ages), is a museum in Paris, France. It is located in the 5th arrondissement at 6 Place Paul Painleve, south of the Boulevard Saint-Germain, between the Boulevard Saint-Michel and the Rue Saint-Jacques.

The structure is perhaps the most outstanding example still extant of civic architecture in medieval Paris. It was formerly the town house (hotel) of the abbots of Cluny, started in 1334. The structure was rebuilt by Jacques d'Amboise, abbot in commendam of Cluny 1485-1510; it combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. In 1843 it was made into a public museum, to contain relics of France's Gothic past preserved in the building by Alexandre du Sommerard.

Though it no longer possesses anything originally connected with the abbey of Cluny, originally the hotel, was part of a larger Cluniac complex that also included a building (no longer standing) for a religious college in the Place de la Sorbonne (just south of the present day Hotel de Cluny along Boulevard Saint-Michel). Although originally intended for the use of the Cluny abbots, the residence was taken over by Jacques d'Amboise, Bishop of Clermont and Abbot of Jumieges, and rebuilt to its present form in the period of 1485-1500. Occupants of the house over the years have included Mary Tudor, who was installed here after the death of her husband Louis XII by his successor Francis I of France in 1515 so he could watch her more closely, particularly to see if she was pregnant. Seventeenth-century occupants included several papal nuncios including Mazarin.

In 1793 it was confiscated by the state, and for the next three decades served several functions. At one point it was owned by a physician who used the magnificent Flamboyant chapel on the first floor as a dissection room.

In 1833 Alexandre du Sommerard moved here and installed here his large collection of medieval and Renaissance objects. Upon his death in 1842 the collection was purchased by the state and opened in 1843, with his son as the museum's first curator. The present gardens, opened in 1971, include a "Foret de la Licorne" inspired by the tapestries.

The Hotel de Cluny is partially constructed on the remains of Gallo-Roman baths dating from the third century (known as the Thermes de Cluny ), which are famous in their own right and which may still be visited. In fact, the museum itself actually consists of two buildings: the frigidarium ("cooling room"), where the remains of the Thermes de Cluny are, and the Hotel de Cluny itself, which houses its impressive collections.

Among the principal holdings of the museum are the six La Dame a la Licorne (The Lady and the Unicorn) tapestries, from the late fifteenth century, often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe.
Other notable works stored there include early Medieval sculptures from the seventh and eighth centuries. There are also works of gold, ivory, antique furnishings, and illuminated manuscripts.

Siding Lane Engine bed, Rainford.

The remains of the sandstone engine bed at the former Rainford Colliery at Siding Lane.
It is likely that this held a static steam engine which hauled coal wagons to and from the local line to Wigan on the other side of the Rainford bypass. I am only surmising this as this bed lines up with the direction of the partially demolished railway bridge at Siding Lane.
The colliery, which closed in 1928 is now a nature reserve close to the Kirkby/Wigan railway line.

The Former Diplomat Hotel

The Former Diplomat Hotel

Rumored to be haunted, the former Diplomat Hotel stands on top of Dominican Hill, near the Lourdes Grotto here in Baguio City, Philippines. The hotel ceased its operations and was declared an off-limits zone when Tony Agpaoa, the owner/manager of the hotel died of a heart attack (woodstock inn millstream).

The building was a resthouse and seminary (Year 1911) before it was turned into a hotel.

During the 2nd World War, Dominican Hill was occupied by refugees fleeing from the Japanese Army Liberation Forces. Later the Japanese forces bombed the refugees out which resulted in extensive damages to the main structure and the surrounding area. Reconstruction work started in 1947 and was completed in about a year. (grand hotel du parc villars)

We were asked by the guard what our purpose was in going there. Then he let us sign the logbook. I think it’s best to go here early in the morning. I think the fog in the afternoon will contribute more to the ‘eerie feeling’ of the place.

I have to admit, after reading stories in the internet, I felt quite nervous when I entered the former hotel. Water was dropping from the ceiling. It is dilapidated and eeriely quiet.

I think it will be made into a first class hotel named “Baguio Heritage Hotel”.

This coming 2009, the former hotel will be made into museum showcasing photographs and documents of the city’s development over the years.

What's left of Diplomat Hotel (Dominican monastery) in Baguio

What's left of Diplomat Hotel (Dominican monastery) in Baguio

"Diplomat Hotel on Dominican Hill - In May 1911, the councils of the Province of the Dominican Order voted to construct a vacation house in Baguio on a 17 hectare property they had acquired when the American authorities were encouraging people to come here. Actual work started in 1913 under Fr. Roque Ruano and the building was inaugurated on May 23, 1915. To take advantage of the tax exemptions a school called Collegio del Santissimo Rosario was opened in June 1915 but due to the very small enrollment the school closed in 1917, reverting the building to the original vacation house sanitarium. During WWII it was first occupied by refugees. Later the Japanese Army Liberation Forces had to bomb out the refugees from the buildings. The five direct hits left very extensive damage and for a time it was left unrepaired. Reconstruction was started in 1947 and completed in 1948 with most of its pre-war grandeur and beauty restored. In 1973, Diplomats Hotels, Inc. acquired ownership, remodeled the interior into a 33 bedroom hotel with modern facilities, but retained the unique and distinct personality of the Dominican Hill. In the 80's the hotel ceased operations due to the death of one of its majority stockholders. Plans are underway to develop this historical religious landmark into a tourist resort."

Androy Hotel

Androy Hotel

It is difficult for me to explain anything about the Iron Range of Minnesota. I'm from MN, but I hadn't visited the Iron Range until last year. Oh sure, I'd been to the North Shore of Lake Superior. Everyone goes there and loves it, but at this point in time, it's hard to love or even acknowledge the Range. It was not always this way. The Range had numerous boomtowns, built rapidly from nothing when vast deposits of iron ore were discovered in the late 19th century and developed early in the 20th. Money flowed everywhere, and grand buildings were built -- the fanciest hotels, the nicest schools, grand homes, etc. But do mining booms ever last? Of course not. The range has had many ups and downs, and I imagine the Androy has as well. Regardless of all that, I'm glad to see the sign still around. It's pretty cool.

Cottle Hotel, Paducah, Texas

This is the long abandoned Cottle Hotel in Paducah, Texas. It is located on the north east side of the courthouse square in "downtown". I couldn't find much info on the Cottle, except that it was built in 1929 and opened in 1930. I have to say this has probably been my favorite abandoned hotel to photograph so far, and I have photographed the famous Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells and later on in this trip I photographed the abandoned hotel in Plainview. There was just something about this place that was really cool. Maybe because it's surrounded by like 10 other abandoned buildings.

Haciendo "Chabrol"

Haciendo

Hotel California

Hotel California

On my drive to work every day, there is a stop light right next to this motel where I have spent considerable time in the car over the years. I always look at this view and think of the Eagles' song "Hotel California". Today I actually pulled over and took the picture.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the hotel california
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
’please bring me my wine’
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the hotel california
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
’relax,’ said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!

Das Weisse Hotel an der Elbschaussee, Hamburg, Germany

Room 205.

This is an old retirement house what has now been rebuilt to hotel. It's quite odd, as they have just removed the signboard saying "retirement home" to "hotel".
This means, it feels more like an appartment than a hotel room. The person who recommended me the hotel promoted for the more expensive river-view room rather than the one looking toward the forest. Unfortunately I got the one right on the terrace so I could hardly see any river at all (but I did not complain since I paid for a forest view room fee).
For some reason, I could not relax in this room, maybe as this lack the comfy hotel atmosphere of the room. It felt a bit impersonal and cold.

The area is nice and I went for long walks in the morning. The breakfast is pretty decent too.
I recall there were no kettle in the room meaning no tea.
Not very good location if you want to visit Hamburg city in the evening = you are dependent on taxi.

A quick ride from a motel near the ferry dock and we were waiting in line to load. Irka made some hot tea in a thermos, which was useful. At least, we all were dry.
Sasha and Lena bought this sign in town of Perce, where from we all left on a foggy and drizzling morning. Katia and Dima took Polina to another Park on a way, to look at the fossils. We all met there in the afternoon. and Katia and Dima departed going back home. UAE/Dubai, why do you block flickr?? :(

UAE/Dubai, why do you block flickr?? :(

What country, in their “leader’s/government’s” right mind, would block flickr? Flickr is an online photography site - view my flickr stream! ;-) You can find the link in my profile.

Leaders and government; that is the problem, for leaders and government are complied of people! People like you and I, but only in the sense that we all eat, sh*! and breath! We bleed the same too you know - and you know what else, we all eventually die the same!

Yea I know, I’m headed down a very painful road… A road that in all honesty I do not want to even step one toe onto…let alone attempt a suicidal journey down. But, there is something in me, some kind of “social” and or a genetic mutation that screams at the top of this mutation’s lungs… “ENOUGH!”

I’ve had enough of corrupt, hypocritical government leaders the world over! Did you know that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) blocks flickr as apart of its “Internet Access Management Policy”! I was truly left confused and shocked that UAE/Dubai would block flickr. What do the leaders of Dubai and the UAE fear from their citizens? Is individualism feared? How about creativity and expression? Wait, I’ve got more… Freedom? Liberty? What about you, can you think of anything I have left out?

I found myself in Dubai sometime last week after a sever case of “writer’s block“ - or what ever it is that gets into one’s mind making it hard to put words from thought to fingers to keyboard. I just couldn’t write anything. After weeks of monsoonal typing, a drought of biblical proportions set in with fewer and fewer words trickling down every day resulting in a severely dehydrated and malnourished computer screen. So with that, as one of my favorite Serbian motivational phrases goes, I said to myself, “JEBIGA!”(f--- it) and logged onto the internet and reserved a plane ticket from Kuwait to Dubai. I left that same day arriving only a few hours after clicking on the payment tab within Jazeera Airways payment system. Oh, jebiga quite properly translates (not literally of course) into Arabic as “inshala” ;-). Google “inshala” - quite interesting.

Why Dubai you ask? Well, it is only about an hour from Kuwait and it has alcohol. I thought I’d break my seven month liquor drought in an attempt to gain some kind of inspiration to create little black letters on a blank screen by overindulging on any kind of liquor I could wrap my hands around. Not only this but, Dubai had come recommended by many I work with as a “party-do” anything destination. Well, this couldn’t be further from the truth and I highly DO NOT recommend Dubai or anywhere in the UAE to any tourists out there thinking about coming here. Spend your money on something better! Dubai and the UAE is no different than Kuwait other than having cheaper alcohol.

It is quite funny actually and ironic, to me anyway, that Dubai has the world’s only seven star luxury hotel, the Burj Al Arab Hotel, smack dab in the middle of a “crap-hole”. The other night I was in my hotel bar when two New Zealanders walked up and ordered a couple drinks. The one closest to me turned in my direction and asked, “this your first time here?” I replied, “unfortunately…and my last!” The man looked at me with an ear to ear grin and let out a deep, beer-belly rolling chuckle… “Yea, I know what you mean, this is our first and last time too - this place is nothing but a big crap-hole”, as he and his friend turned and walked away. In turn I let out a mini, liquor-belly rolling chuckle of my own… I was laughing at the man's use of "crap"! It just sounded funny the way he said it like it was some kind of major cuss word in New Zealand. His accent was kind of cool too.

You want to know what I felt when I drove by this seven star hotel: corruption, greed, organized crime! It just didn’t seem fitting to have this massive “luxury” building sticking out of the sand with so much poverty around. Sure, Dubai is a wealthy city but only to a few. Dubai has many immigrants in the form of cheap labor mostly from the Philippines and India - modern day slave labor in my opinion! These immigrants have grown to outnumber the native UAE citizens.

I don’t know…again, it just didn’t seem right. Would it have been any more fitting to drive by this same hotel in downtown New York, Paris or Bangkok? I don’t know…and perhaps my whining attacks on Dubai and the UAE are fueled by flickr being blocked.

I do know that any government who tries to silence their citizens is full of some shady characters. And no, I’m not being Arab biased here, for the American government is just as screwed up as the UAE, again in my opinion. The world’s only seven star luxury hotel being spent on in the middle of some religious run, tiny, desert country is no different than the American Government wasting billions upon billions of tax paying citizen’s dollars on banks, insurance firms and car companies rewarding these entities for their failure and piss-po

Hotel Puente Romano tennis courts

The Hotel Puente Romano Tennis Club lies within the grounds of the Resort. The Tennis Club opened in 1979 and it was the tennis legend Bjorn Borg who first managed the Club after its opening, followed by the famous Spanish professional Manolo Santana. The Tennis Club is member of the ATP and hosted numerous well-attended international tennis tournaments. Among the participants have been Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Serena Williams and Henri le Conte, and many others. There are ten courts in total, eight are clay courts and two are hard courts, giving players the option to play on a faster court or clay court, which is the traditional choice for Spain. One of the clay courts is the Center Court, holding a seating capacity of approximately 2.500 and – apart from tennis events - has also been the ideal venue for many international musical artists to perform in Marbella, like George Benson, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Liza Minnelli and Jose Carreras. The Tennis Club features also four paddle-tennis courts where our guests may take private lessons and organize tournaments.
